Pittsburgh Modular The Toad - Phase Shifter Eurorack Module

Patch Lab with Richard Nicol video upload by Pittsburgh Modular Synthesizers

The Toad was first mentioned in this SUPERBOOTH23 post.

via Pittsburgh Modular

"The Safari Series continues to provide artists with an advanced preview of innovative new concepts stemming from our research and design process. The seventh Safari Series reinvigorates the sound of one of our favorite vintage Pittsburgh modules.

Pittsburgh Modular The Toad phase shifter is a creamy, 12 stage, all analog effect module designed to expand on the classic swirls, rich swooshes, and doppler effects associated with the phaser.

The Toad has a single 12 stage audio signal path to create a very rich, full sound. Dual phased audio outputs are tapped from stages 7 and 12 and can be used together for wide, flowing, stereo effect. Each output has a switch that allows the phased signal to be mixed with a positive or inverted dry signal resulting in even more sonic flavors to melt with.

An attenuverting CV input and onboard triangle LFO allows for maximum flexibility for custom modulation options. Feedback can be positive or negative and The Toad is more than happy to self oscillate in either direction.

Price, Availability, and More Information
The retail price for Toad is $299 USD each. Because these modules are considered experiments, production has been limited to 200 modules."

Roland Juno Chorus eurorack comparison

video upload by John Schussler

"I'm a big chorus fan, and am continually surprised there aren't more of them as stand alone modules in Eurorack. The most famous chorus was originally shipped in the Roland Juno line (6, 60, and 106), and is what's replicated in these two modules I'm looking at today.

The Feedback Chorus 106 has been out for a while, and is now discontinued because they can no longer get some of the NOS (new old stock) parts they use.

The SoundForce uChorus is brand new, and has substituted an STM and some other new bits to make up for the MN3101 driver IC that's no longer available.

Both are following the original circuit behavior as closely as possible.

I compare them here to see if one is better than the other.
Spoiler: I can't hear the difference. Can you? Let me know in the comments.

00:00 Intro
00:20 The basics
01:40 uChorus I+II mode
03:03 106 Chorus overdrive"

The G-Storm electro Feedback Chorus made it's first appearance here in 2019, and the SoundForce uChorus in May, 2023 this year.

Introducing TEK2 Desktop Modular Rotary Controller by Intech Studio

Press release follows:

Introducing TEK2 by Intech Studio, the fully compact, modular rotary knob Grid controller

What is Grid by Intech Studio?

At Intech, we create diverse controlling solutions for enhancing the production workflow of sound designers, musicians and digital creatives. We see the future of innovative tactile control in a modular and compact form, upon which the Grid controller family was born.

Based on our approach towards functional design, we now decided to integrate a smooth, endless rotary potentiometer into Grid’s control element variety, while keeping the module’s clean and compact body structure. Welcome TEK2 Grid, the freshest Grid module equipped with double infinite rotation potentiometers and eight separate buttons. TEK2 is made for multimedia creatives boasting a distinguished audiovisual skillset, aiming to broaden their horizons through new ways of tactile control interactions. Preorders open on 25th of October for the first edition of TEK2.

TEK2 Features

The TEK2 adds to the fine-tuning experience with a pair of ergonomically designed knobs, equipped with a two-state switch (pressed & released) and a smooth endless rotation. In addition, both potentiometers are equipped with 5-point LED feedback, creating a brand new perspective among Grids. These full RGB multicolor programmable LED lights can be set to several animation modes configurable with the Grid Editor’s toolset. Such a ‘5-bit display’ indicator is perfect for giving feedback on centered or starting value positions and on highlighting parameter states.

The large knobs are accompanied by a set of 8 tactile buttons which can act like shift buttons, toggles or triggers – easing the way for quick mode switches, dynamic settings navigation and active function changes of the two massive knobs.

By all means, TEK2 preserves its compatibility with all pre-existing and future Grid modules, forming an ecosystem both in design and software-wise. While it remains a MIDI and HID compliant device, we plan to expand Grid’s controlling possibilities through new Adobe and DaVinci software integrations requested by our community.

Fun Fact about TEK2

As a startup coming from the heart of Budapesta, Intech Studio decided to name their new Grid piece with a bit of local spirit. The ‘TEK’ is derived from the word ‘TEKERŐ’, – meaning rotary knob in Hungarian – and the sound of the word ‘tech’. As TEK2 features two of these knobs the final name goes without saying. This release also marks the start of a new wave of Intech Studio Grid controllers, featuring an even more thoughtful and unique design.

About Intech Studio

Intech Studio is the first open-source Hungarian tech startup empowering digital creators through hardware and software solutions. Started from a prototype of a DIY modular controller made by two engineer friends in Budapest, Intech Studio’s Grid has made its way internationally, including Soundmit in Torino and Berlin’s Superbooth festival for several years in a row. A bunch of Grid module variations later and with a fine-tuned Editor software, Intech Studio has gone through a rebranding phase to finally become what the founders have dreamt of a home of innovative controlling possibilities not only for electronic musicians but to all audiovisual creatives.

TEK2 initial price: 199 $ Pre-order starts: 25 / 10 / 2023

Befaco FX BOY // Gameboy based Eurorack FX with CV controlled EQ, Drives, Modulation, Delay & more!

video upload by DivKid

"Eurorack FX in Gameboy style cartridges that are hot swappable into a module with CV controlled parameters and a four band fully CV controlled EQ … YES PLEASE, WHAT A CONCEPT!

Beyond the obvious nostalgia hit of the Gameboy cartridges I’ve long been a fan of swappable FX platforms that allow a module to be used in a wider range of patches. FX BOY comes with 7 ‘founders pack’ cartridges with the Making Sound Machines Analog Wavefolder, FEEDBACK modules Flanger, XOR Electronics Delay & Granular FX, Instruo microPhaser, Befaco TRASH distortion, TouellSkouarn Noise & Feedback Fuzz and Tesseract Modular AVMA downsampled & ring modulator. It’s a wide range of FX all with two CV controlled parameters, plus CV over dry wet for parallel blends and modulation.

In this video I chose to give each cartridge it’s own patch, letting them shine on different patches with different use cases, as that’s how I’ll end up using the module going forward. However each cartridge easily warrants it’s own demo video going through a range of patches as these circuits have proven to be great on a range of sources. So I’m already thinking about future videos … leave a comment about what you’d like to see more of.

FX BOY is an open source platform for people to develop their own cartridge circuit FX, so who knows where this will go, whether Befaco release more cards, companies sell them on their own or whether it spawns some interest DIY ideas along the way."

LE BRASIER OVERVIEW /// EURORACK GERMANIUM RESONANT MULTIMODE FILTER / DISTORTION

video upload by SOVAGE ENGINEERING

"LE BRASIER is a hybrid OTA and germanium based multimode filter, a 100% analog circuit meticulously crafted from the ground up. It defies and blends the conventions of classic filters, resulting in surprisingly extremely sweet and yet wild and chaotic results, thanks to its unpredictable germanium core.
The germanium distortion is a unique one, centered around the interplay of feedback and clipping. It offers two distinct flavors: a classic overdrive for added weight and power to your audio, and a special fuzz that emphasizes the high-mid frequencies.
Due to its hyper-resonant nature, you can utilize it as a VCO capable of generating intriguing waveforms, including a pure sinewave.
As a standalone unit, it functions as a coloring tool; feed in complex audio like a drum loop or a full mono track and experience the immediate transformation, delivering instant character..Aka INSTANT MOJO … Take it a step further by infusing life and distortion through CV modulation of the parameters. This level of control is made possible with individual attenuators, a feature consistent across all SOVAGE modules!"

Befaco - FX Boy

video upload by Befacosynth

"A Multi FX module based on game carts!

FxBoy is a multi-FX module designed in collaboration with several talented manufacturers.

This is an effect unit with CV control over the parameters and Dry/wet control, with a Built-in CV controllable four bands EQ.

Each effect is physically hosted in a hot-swappable game cart and designed by a different manufacturer: Touell Skouarn with Skuara a harsh fuzz with overdrive, Instruo with micro Phaser, a two-flavoured Phaser, Feedback modules with a vintage Flanger, XOR with FX-Girl, a digital double effect module: Delay + Granularizer, Making sound machines with an analog Wave folder, Tesseract with a bit crusher and Befaco Trash distortion"

Patch Tuesday | Analogue Accumulator with Step 8 & Route 4

video upload by Joranalogue Audio Design

"It's Patch Tuesday! Have you ever heard of an analogue accumulator? A 'battery for CV', an accumulator stores a voltage which can be charged or discharged in discrete steps.

In this ingenious feedback patch, every step taken by Step 8 adds or subtracts voltage, creating a rising or falling melody. Additionally, Step 8 sends CV to modulate multiple modules in the system, whilst also performing duty as a gate sequencer."

Eric Schlappi and Bastien Lavaud - Orbital Mirrors

video upload by SCHLAPPI ENGINEERING

"Part of an improvisational audiovisual jam session between Eric Schlappi and Bastien Lavaud on August 26th in Grenoble, France, lightly edited afterwards.

Audio is Eric Schlappi using a prototype of the Nibbler as a crude sequencer and another Nibbler at audio rate dividing down the lead synths frequency to create the bassline. The lead is a Three Body and the Kick is formed with the Angle Grinder and Boundary modules. There are also some overdubbed blasts of noise using a Nibbler at audio rate with the shift register functionality.

Video is Bastien Lavaud using a mix of @syntonie1487 (including the upcoming Solaire and Seuils modules) and @lzxindustries video modules as well as some video feedback through a camera.

Please watch in the highest available quality as compression is quite harsh on the video synthesis methods used.

UNEXPECTRAPHON | Advanced Patching and Sound Design with Maths and Erbe-Verb.

video upload by Cinematic Laboratory

"Spectraphon is a module with many faces and a big mustache. It can have a classic additive spectral processed sound, but it also offers sub oscillators and two basic sinewaves, one clean, and one a bit saturated. It's a big module with a big sonic spectrum (duh!). But an even bigger world unfolds when you patch it up with some old friends, in this case Maths and Erbe-Verb. It's a module that needs to be explored and discovered.
Like Strega, Telharmonic, Mysteron and Erbe-Verb I don't really like Spectraphon's raw raspy sound which can easily dominate a patch and makes it very recognizable. However, the many output options can suit your needs for more gentle sounds. You just need to know how, so hopefully my patch adventures can offer some new perspectives. Welcome to the Unexpectraphon!

Fun fact, this video includes Shared System Tutorials 44 with different captions, explaining half-rectification of a simple sine with Maths.
I always see the Shared as a reimagination of the classic Buchla 200 series with a twist so I always think of it as 'vintage' instead of 'advanced'. Sure, it's an expensive powerhouse flagship but if you ignore the black & gold panels, you may also see a collection of basic modular functionality like LFO, Envelope, Polarizer, dual VCO, VCA, tape echo, reverb, clock division, randomization, 16 step sequencing, human interaction and basic sampling/looping. It's a template for a complete modular setup, only missing a filter. Even if you don't own a Shared, my 44 episodes can still bring you plenty of inspiration for similar modules and functions. I would never say 'everyone should own a Shared', but it helps to look at what it does - and all the things you have to do yourself, like making white noise from scratch.

New Bugbrand NSH - Noise, Sample & Hold & Red Phase Shifter Modules

via Bugbrand

"NSH stands for Noise, Sample & Hold – a module which features analogue Noise and a pair of Sample & Hold processors.

The Sample & Hold circuits are identical, each with Input, Output & Clock input (with internal comparator, trigger level c.+1V). The Source Input can be set to either an external signal or takes the White Noise source direct. The S&H can be run at audio rates for ‘bug-crushing’ (analogue sample-rate reduction – NOT bit-crushing).

The Noise section is standard transistor-based White Noise, with a second Filtered output which passes through a simple tilt filter around 1kHz cutoff."

via Bugbrand

"The Phase is a 6 pole, analogue Phase Shifter designed for hands-on sonic thickening. Made up of 12 All-Pass Filter stages, it features fully balanced Input/Outputs, Feedback, and Modulation from an internal LFO and/or external sources. All in a very playable design, stemming very much from the blue Phaser module.

Check the Block Diagram image. The main Input is designed for typical line level signals with variable gain up to 20dB and soft-clipping so you can add some overdrive if desired. The Feedback input stage is similar but without the variable gain – it is normalised from the Phase output & plugging a jack plug in breaks this normalisation. The buffered input signal is split off to the Phasing stages and the dry signal also passes on to the output mixer where it mixes with the Phase stage outputs. The Phase stages is also buffered to provide a pure wet output.

The magic of All-Pass Filter stages, here built around three of the ever versatile 2164 quad-VCA chips, is that they alter the phase of signals at their filtering frequency while preserving their amplitude. (With a pure sine-wave, this would look like the waveform being shifted in phase from the input – but you’ll rarely be putting in a pure sine!). When you mix together the dry & processed paths, frequencies cancel each other out to create peaks & troughs in the frequency response. The main Phase control, combined with any modulation, sets the centre frequency for the filtering and covers the whole audio spectrum.

Dialing in Feedback passes the phase-stage output back around to its input (via a normalised jack connection – allowing experimentation with further external processing) which emphasises the filtering up to the edge of resonance. The Add/Subtract switch inverts the phase output & the feedback input to give two different response modes and there is also an internal jumper that allows some subtle behavioural differences by putting the feedback into either the first or second filter stage (set as standard to 2nd stage, down position, but… experiment!).

Static filtering (ie. without modulation) can be used to highlight particular frequencies, but bringing in modulation is perhaps the more readily audible approach – give it some movement! The internal sine-wave Low Frequency Oscillator (LFO) covers traditional sweep modulation (range approx 0.08-10Hz), but more interesting usage can be found with external sources such as sequencers etc. Note that when switched on initially, if the LFO Rate is set low then the oscillations will take some time to build up to full strength, so you may want to turn the control up full until the LED indicator is clearly blinking. The LFO also has a banana output jack (+/-5V). The External Modulation input takes a CV input (typically 10V peak-to-peak) and has a convenient polarity/mute switch. See the Understanding signals & voltages and Interfacing with Bananas pages for further technical details."

Two New Waveshapers - August 2023

video upload by John Schussler

"New month, new modules.

I built the Wave Animator from the kit: it's very straightforward with a small part count and easy assembly.

I most certainly did not build the Foldiplier. It's got lots of parts and does not look to me like an easy project. (Zlob's web page rates its difficulty at 3.5/5)

They're both waveshapers, but with very different approaches. The Wave Animator is based on an Ian Fritz design that produces two pulses whenever it sees an input wave. The Foldiplier is a more "standard" wavefolder/harmonics generator, with the caveat that it has a feedback mode best described as 'pissed off.'

Both are quite fun.
