Drone Lab | Nosaj Thing | Moog Werkstatt Workshop

Published on Aug 7, 2015 Moog Music Inc

"At Slingshot 2015, a multi-disciplinary celebration of the arts in Athens, Georgia, Moog Music presented a unique synth-building workshop. Led by Moog Engineer Chris Howe, attendees learned the fundamentals of synthesis from the ground up by building a Werkstatt-01 analog synthesizer kit.

Once built, the 12 attendees crafted drone patches. Later that evening, Alpha Pup recording artist Nosaj Thing took control of all 12 synthesizers, adding and subtracting their signals in a long-form drone performance. The improvised result was an ever-shifting and complex soundscape.

After his performance, Nosaj Thing designed 12 evolving drones with the Werkstatt-01 that we are making available to you.

Download the Werkstatt-01 drone patches designed by Nosaj Thing at www.soundcloud.com/moogmusicinc [embed below]

Experiment with stacking and layering Nosaj Thing's Werkstatt-01 drones to create your own shifting palettes. Run them through filters and compressors, or use them as background textures to lay other sonic components on top of.

However you choose to use them, experimenting and learning will reward you with a lifetime of rich synthesizer experiences.

Bob Moog Foundation Raffle for Vintage Moog Liberation Synthesizer

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.
"Asheville, NC - March 16, 2015...

Today the Bob Moog Foundation announces its spring raffle for a vintage Moog Liberation synthesizer. The raffle, a fundraiser in support of the Foundation's projects, runs through April 20, 2015 or until all 2,000 tickets are sold. Tickets are $20 each and can be purchased through the Foundation's website. The winner will be announced on April 24, 2015. Also included in the raffle is an original owner's manual for the Liberation, written by Rock Wehrmann in 1980.

The Moog Liberation is distinctive in its form and function as a keytar, or guitar-shaped synthesizer. It was one of the first of its kind when released in 1980, and provided freedom to move around stage while playing. The Liberation was quickly adopted by such bands as Devo, The Human League, Jean Michel Jarre, Tom Coster of Santana, Herbie Hancock, Spyro Gyra, and more.

The Liberation is a strap-on, dual oscillator, monophonic/polyphonic analog synthesizer with one voltage controlled 24dB/octave Moog filter (VCF) and one voltage controlled amplifier (VCA). It boasts a polyphonic section, which allows for synth-like chords, a ring modulator, noise generator, syncable VCOs, and a ribbon controller, located in the neck portion of the instrument.

'The Moog Liberation has a special significance to the Bob Moog Foundation,' remarks executive director Michelle Moog-Koussa. 'Through our archives, we are the proud stewards of the Liberation prototype, a host of fascinating schematics, and a variety of conceptual drawings. The raffle will be a springboard for us to share other historic materials regarding this intriguing instrument.'

The instrument being offered is in excellent technical condition. It has been meticulously restored by the highly regarded restoration studio, Tone Tweakers. There are minor exterior flaws comprised mostly of minor chips in the paint as a badge of its vintage status.

The Liberation raffle follows the Foundation's successful fall 2014 raffle of a vintage Minimoog Model D, won by Danny Hagan of Statesboro, Georgia. Funding raised from the Foundation's raffles supports its innovative educational project, Dr. Bob's SoundSchool, and the organization's Archive Preservation Initiative.

Moog Minimoog D Synthesizer SN 1838 with Mods

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.

via this auction

via the seller: "1970's serial 1838. Just finished a complete cleaning, and tuning and ready to record. I also just bought a new pro road case from Georgia Case Company, and the case is heavy duty with wheels. The Minimoog, has been modified in two ways which are real helpful with its sound: 1. down by the modulation wheel, there is an extra control oscillator, newly replaced, with sawtooth or sine wave control and a speed pot for those controls, and above that on the main control board, is the off/on switch that give this new oscillator control, or releases the control back to main oscillator #3. This really helps with vibrato effects allowing you to utilize all tree main oscillators for a fatter tone. 2. on the back is a midi control outlet. These modifications were done by computer and synthesizer whiz, Doug Slocum of Doug Slocum Synthetic Sound Labs, and originally done at the request of Chick Corea."

Stone Mountain Park Carillon-Mabel Sansing Sharp Carillonneur

Uploaded on Apr 4, 2010 stevethrasher·156 videos

"For over three decades carillonneur, Mabel Sansing Sharp has treated audiences to spectacular performances of the songs "Clare Delune", "Chattanooga Choo Choo", "Amazing Grace" and "Georgia" along with many other songs and hymns. A very special thank you to Ms. Mabel for all of the wonderful memories!

For those of you not familiar with the Stone Mountain Carillon, the instrument was built by Schulmerich Carillons in Sellersville, PA for the Coco-Cola Pavilion 1964 World's Fair in New York.
The 732-bell carillon is located lakeside in the heart of beautiful Stone Mountain Park, Georgia. This amazing bell tower structure provides daily concerts to those young and old for reflection and inspiration. The carillon is the heaviest of all musical instruments and probably one of the most interesting by design."

via this auction

This one spotted by Evan of Antiquity Music, makers of The Wheel Harp. It appears to be electronic based as you can see from the pics.

"For your consideration is an extremely rare Schumerich Americana carillon, one of Schulmerich's flagship carillons from the 1960s. Most of these carillons have been destroyed or salvaged for their amplifier parts, and finding one of these very nice models is extremely unusual. Buying a new digital Schulmerich carillon costs over $35,000 today, but these analog carillons have an even more beautiful, breathtaking sound. This particular carillon came from Weber State University in Utah, and cost over $25,000 in the early 1960s, which equates to over $180,000 in today's dollars.

We have fully restored this carillon's wiring, adding connectors (DB25, XLR, RCA etc.), so that the carillon can easily be moved around (all Schulmerich Americana carillons were originally hard-wired on-site when installed, so when removed, over 400 individual cables had to be cut, making restoration extremely costly and time-consuming). This required soldering over 800 individual cables!!!!! The restoration work on this carillon has cost us over $4000 in technicians' time.

Of course, the carillon comes with all of its original schematics and instructions.

This particular carillon has the following bells/voices, each of which has its own manual on the keyboard console:
61-note Flemish bells/voices (contained in the 5 chime boxes)
61-note Harp bells/voices (contained in the chime tower)
61-note Celesta bells/voices (contained in the chime tower)

This carillon has three 19" rack towers: (1) a power amplifier tower, (2) a timer/clock tower and (3) a chime tower

The keyboard console has a speaker in it, but the system also has an original Schulmerich satellite/external speaker. It also still has the original a paper roll player and a box of over one dozen original rolls.

Here is a video that we made when testing out this exact carillon's Harp and Celesta voices (because the volume was too loud for the camera microphone, it sounds distorted in the recording, but it is not in reality) [1st video above]

Here is a video that shows what one of these flagship Schulmerich carillons sounds like when restored (note that the carillon in the video is a different carillon, a Schulmerich Mark V, but the voices played in the video are all present and the same as those on this carillon) [2nd video above]

This instrument is perfect for the musician who loves rare bell/tine keyboards, as you can't get this sound anywhere else without paying tens of thousands of dollars for a new digital Schulmerich carillon. It even comes with Fender Rhodes sustain pedal and a Maas-Rowe Vibrachord carillon harp if you Buy-It-Now! The Rhodes pedal and Maas-Rowe Vibrachord harp, both of which are not shown in the pictures, came with a lot of equipment that we bought along with this carillon several years ago..." Rick Powell 1969 RA Moog 1p/2p Modular Up for Auction

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.
via this auction

via the listing: "RA MOOG modular synthesizer system built in 1969. This 1p/2p custom system built especially for Rick Powell in 1969.

Rick was a musician, a producer and a close friend of Robert Moog.

This is one of only a few completely intact RA Moog factory built custom systems specifically built for a customer during the RA Moog period.

Rick Powell used this unit on his “Choir Book” LP (also featured on LP cover) and also the “Switched On Country” LP.

System was built with a RA Moog 950 keyboard (serial 2048) which is in very good condition. The modules are as shown. 4 of the 902 voltage controller amplifiers, 2 of the 911 envelope generators, a 907 fixed filter bank, a 904-A voltage controlled low pass filter, a 904-B voltage controlled high pass filter, a 901-A oscillator controller, a 901-B oscillator, a 903 white sound source, a 901 voltage controlled oscillator and 2 of the mixer units. Both keyboard and cabinet interconnect cables are included. The 901 has a common factory mod to regulate thermal changes which cause drift.

I Bought this unit directly from Rick Powell’s widow and drove cross country from Los Angeles to Florida to pick it up. I wanted to avoid shipping it. Months later I drove it cross country again to Georgia to drop it off with Phil Cirocco of C.M.S. Phil Cirocco at C.M.S. is by far the most knowledgeable, talented, experienced and careful modular synthesizer technician in the world. Though I requested Phil restore the unit meticulously at to factory operating spec, I also insisted the entire system remain as factory stock as possible and all replaced electronic parts be in harmony with the original production parts. A great deal of Phil’s time was used to make this system as perfect as possible and operating to original factory spec. The bill for servicing was a substantial investment. At the time of servicing I had planned to keep this unit and spared no expense. Recently however I was fortunate to have the opportunity to purchase a more desirable system and so I will let this beautiful perfectly restored system go to a new home.

This is a very rare chance to own an original RA Moog factory assembled unit with interesting provenance. It is also a rare chance to own a Moog system so expertly and carefully electronically restored."

LaGrange College Moog Poster & Bob Moog's Sense of Humor

via Eric Frampton:

"Bob had a good sense of humor.

He and I were on the same lecture schedule together at an electronic music festival at LaGrange College down in middle Georgia. We got to spend a fair amount of time just hangin' out, so I brought him a printed copy of the 12 Steps of Syntheholics Anonymous, a posting on Analogue Heaven from back in 1995, which I thought he'd enjoy. He indeed thought it was funny, enough that when I asked him to sign my poster, he signed it thusly.

I brought a bunch of my vintage keyboards down there as as show-and-tell sort of thing. I had the Memorymoog, the Mini, a Source, and I forget what all else (this was in 1998, at the height of my G.A.S.), and I remember him saying, 'I see you don't have a Polymoog here.' To which I replied something along the lines of, good lord those things are awful, what a maintenance nightmare, not worth the trouble, etc. He simply gave me a knowing smirk, and a nod of agreement. Nothing more needed to be said.

Also, I asked him what was the last product he directly worked on at the old Moog. Turns out it was the Micromoog.

I've copied the original 12-step email here for reference. And sorry about the fuzzy poster shots…I hope they still get the message across.

From: SuperBad MoFo
Subject: Syntheholics Anonymous

Hello, my name is Mr-808. I am a syntheholic.

I bought my last synth 5 days ago. I was talking to a friend, and he said he was selling his Polaris for US$300, and I just couldn't resist.

I would like to review the 12 steps of SA now:

1. We admitted we were powerless over analogue synths at good prices and that our lives had become unmanageable.

2. Came to believe that a Power greater than ourselves could restore us to sanity.

3. Made a decision to turn our will and our lives over to the care of Bob Moog, as we understood Him.

4. Made a searching and fearless inventory of our gear collection.

5. Admitted to God, to ourselves, and to another human being the number of times we used each synth in a piece of recorded music in the past year.

6. Were entirely ready to have God remove all these synths from our studio.

7. Humbly asked Him to give them back if we promise not to buy any more until we master what we have.

8. Made a list of all persons we had sold gear to at too high a price, and became willing to make amends to them all.

9. Made direct amends to such people wherever possible, except when to do so would injure them or others, or embroil us in a flamewar.

10. Continued to take personal inventory and when we were wrong promptly admitted it on both Analogue Heaven and rec.music.maker.synth.

11. Sought, through patch editing and sequencing, to improve our conscious contact with God as we understood Him, praying only for knowledge of Control Voltages and DIN Sync conversion, and the power to carry that out.

12. Having had a spiritual awakening as the result of these steps, we tried to carry this message to syntheholics, and to practice these principles in all our affairs."
