Instruoducing: Instruō - àradh and tágh

video upload by Instruō

Additional videos below.

"Announcement time!

Here are two new old modules :) I have been trying to get these in production for quite some time now. Delays in supply chain forced these to the background for too long.

àradh is a new take on a transistor ladder filter and fills the role of fat "East" Coast subtractive filter as well as adding a dedicated low-pass gate (LPG) to the Instruō range. Plus some other quirks!

tágh is not a V2 but is in fact the OG module that I had in mind for the name a long time ago. It's a 4HP powerhouse of modulation sources and clock utilities.

Please check out the full Overview videos for both àradh and tágh now :) [below]

In addition I would like to introduce the first production range of Instruō spacer panels. Available now are 1HP, 2HP, 4HP, 6HP, 8HP, 10HP, 12HP and a very special limited run of 14HP.

The 14HP panel features a glorious picture of my Greyhound Winston wearing his jammies. https://gal.org.uk/
"GAL is a registered charity in Scotland (SC031027) that rescues and rehomes Greyhounds and Lurchers throughout Scotland. "
A donation of £7.50 will be made to GAL for every panel sold from the limited batch.

Hope to see you all at Superbooth this year!
Cheers
~Jason

Instruō - tágh Overview

video upload by Instruō

You can find the initial overview video from back in 2021 here, and a few user videos in additional posts here.

"This is a module I've wanted to release for years!

The Instruō tágh is a “Swiss Army Knife” modulation source. It features an analogue sample and hold, white noise generator, digital random voltage generator, morphing LFO, and probabilistic trigger generator, all with a unique phase-adaptive tap tempo functionality.

After many iterations of random voltage generation experiments, tágh’s 6 algorithms were meticulously curated to meet the needs of the designer. Once realised, it was quick to see its importance in small and big systems alike. These 6 random algorithms include Classic Stepped Random, Repeatable Stepped Random, Chaos, LFO, Probability-Synced LFO, and Downsampled LFO.

At only 4 HP, tágh is a true modulation workhorse.

• Analogue sample and hold
• Analogue white noise generator
• Six digital random voltage algorithms
• Built-in bias and attenuation controls
• Smart tap tempo follower with manual button
• Steady and rhythmically-relevant clock generator
• Internal or external clock options of analogue sample and hold

Instruō Superbooth23: THE MOVIE

video upload by Instruō

WARNING: This video contains flashing lights which may not be suitable for people with photosensitive epilepsy (There's also a wee bit of swearing!)

This is a movie that follows the creative crew that is Instruō.
In 2023 the company travelled to Berlin to present at the Superbooth trade show/festival.
At the time of these captured events, the expanded team at Instruō numbers 20+ personnel.
Pretty much the entire crew goes to Berlin as we show off who we are and what we make.
This is a look behind the scenes of a Eurorack modular synthesiser manufacturer as they present at the world's best Synth-show!

"This 'documentary' is the beginning of a new form of content that I'm (Jasōn) working on in parallel to the endless stream of new instruments that we're developing.
It's a long time since it was just myself working solo back in the early days of Instruō
(~2016).
I now have the privilege of working with some of the most fun and creative people I've ever met.
We collaborate now as a creative coop. My hope is to showcase more who we are, what we're doing and how things work at the workshop here in Glasgow.
I've always been a fan of behind the scenes content so my plan is to open thing up a bit to showcase my collaborators and what they do inside and outside of roles at Instruō"

Instruō Discontinues troika: A brief history

video upload by Instruō

"It has finally happened...
The troika is being retired from production!
The last 15 have been built (as of August 2023), and will be making their way out into the works.

It still completely staggers me how far Instruō has come since I was designing solo, and building individual modules in the spare bedroom.
To everyone who has shown support through the years, purchased modules, made modular music, and been part of this weird, niche-of-a-niche industry:
Thank you.

Instruō today has grown into a full on creative collective! I get to work every day with the most incredible team of developers/artists/makers.
We've come a long way, and in so many ways it feels like we're just getting started.
The troika was the OG! It was the first to gain "Instruō" as a branding.
For anyone that is newly familiar with Instruō:
Hello! :)
I hope you'll enjoy what we do.
If you're interested, this is where it all began:"

Instruōctional Live 3: Signal Sounds Session 2023

video upload by Instruō

"In February I had the pleasure of performing in the brand new events space hosted at Signal Sounds, Glasgow.

I performed a live set and followed it with a workshop/patch breakdown/Q&A.

It was a great space to perform and present in. Great audience with some excellent questions!
The performance was included as my personal contribution to the recent compilation published on the Instruō Record Label.
Please check it out here:
https://instruo.bandcamp.com/album/in..."

"When I first started Instruō I was simply making things to make sounds with, with only a vague direction in mind. As things grew and people started showing interest in my designs I settled on the motto/descriptor:

'I make sounds with the things that I make to make sounds with'
Skip forward to current day Instruō (2023) and the team has grown considerably. Instruō has evolved into an operation so far beyond what I could have imagined possible. The motto has naturally evolved to:

"We make sounds with the things that we make to make sounds with"

My hope with this record label is to showcase some of the work of my colleagues and collaborators. I have the absolute privilege of getting to work daily with some of the most creative people I've ever met. I get to do what I do because of the incredible support of Instruō users and team that Instruō has become.

I hope you enjoy the sounds that were made with the things that we made to make the sounds with.

Instroducing: Instruō - cruïnn and cnōc

video uploads by Instruō

"I would like to introduce two brand new modules to the Instruō line up!
cruïnn is an all analogue stereo oscillator and the cnōc is a highly compact powerhouse of a function generator."

Video Playlist:
Instroducing: Instruō - cruïnn and cnōc
Instruō - cruïnn Overview *This video heavily features stereo patch examples. For best results use both ears*
Instruō - cnōc Overview

The Instruō cruïnn is an analogue stereo oscillator that utilises through-zero phase modulation to create deep, animated textures.

On top of its single sawtooth oscillator core, cruïnn produces five additional parallel phase-displaced sawtooth variants – each controlled by their own discrete internal triangle waveform LFO. With both on-board and external control over the LFO rates and modulation depths, cruïnn effortlessly creates, super-super-super-super-super saws, lush pads, phasey basses, and chaotic effects.

With cruïnn’s included passive 4 HP Expander, access to all six waveforms are available. Add to that the ability to individually displace the phase of each waveform via CV and cruïnn becomes an amorphous swarm of harmonically rich sawtooths.

• Stereo and summed outputs
• Six phase-displaced sawtooth variants
• Five internal triangle waveform LFOs
• Global rate and depth modulation controls
• Built-in stereo VCA
• Linear and exponential frequency modulation
• LFO functionality
• Includes 4 HP passive waveform and CV expansion module

Cruinn-Expander

The Instruō cnōc is a fully analogue voltage-controlled two stage function generator. This style of function generator was pioneered by the West-coast mindset of sound synthesis and goes far beyond the functionality of a traditional envelope generator. With AR, ASR, and Looping modes, as well as its unipolar positive and bipolar outputs, cnōc finds its home in any patch.

Whether you need a general envelope generator, LFO, delayed gate signal, or a slew limiter to add portamento to your pitch sequences, cnōc fits the bill.

• AR, ASR, and Looping envelope modes
• External control over Attack and Release stages
• Unipolar positive and bipolar outputs
• Assignable gate output
• Manual trigger button
• Slew limiting functionality
• Two response curve settings

Instruō Introduces dåpf Dual All-Pass Filter Effects Processor Eurorack Module

via Instruō

"Introducing dåpf, the first dedicated effects processor in the Instruō product line. The Instruō dåpf is a set of two analogue all-pass filters.

You might be asking yourself, “What is the point of a filter that passes everything?” All-pass filters don’t actually attenuate frequency amplitudes directly, but rather alter the phase relationship of frequencies across the spectrum. All-pass filter stages appear in the vast majority of voltage-controlled filter topologies as well as serving as a core building block within DSP.

The normalled I/O of dåpf allows for cascaded or independent use of the two all-pass filter circuits, offering everything from classic phase-shifting to psychoacoustic stereo enhancement and synthetic Doppler effect.

• Two parallel all-pass filters
• Independent attenuverters for voltage control
• 1-Pole/2-Pole configuration for left channel
• Cascaded normalisation
• Global 1 volt per octave tracking"

Instruō - dåpf Overview

video upload by Instruō

"This video is long... But the second half is very much optional expansion and deep dive into some theory of all-pass filters.
The first few examples are much quicker, more practical examples of dåpf patched.
Thanks for watching :)"

Wow! I didn't know All Pass Filters could do this // 3 Patches with dapf from Instruo
video upload by DivKid

"I'm always striving to learn and explore with sound and music and dapf (the new Eurorack module from Instruo) certainly brought a big slap of school day into DivKid HQ. I was aware of all pass filters, getting past the funny idea that "all" frequencies pass (so what's the point?) and knowing they were use for phase shifts. What I didn't know is how core and important to filter topologies they were and how creatively useful they could be.

Some exploring later and here we are, with 3 patches that really show the power of phase manipulation. While dapf makes a fantastically chewy phaser FX unit I didn't expect it would be such a great stereo expander for a single VCO nor did I know I could be MUSICAL and totally analogue 3 operator FM/PM (like the digital Yamaha DX and Casio CZ phase/FM methods) synth."

Instruō Introduces cuïr and làrachd Eurororack Modules

Instruō - cuïr Overview video upload by Instruō

"cuïr is a highly compact module designed to provide optimised output signals for interfacing a modular system with professional and consumer audio equipment.

In addition to the pair of balanced TRS outputs there is a high quality headphone driver with its own independent level control.

The stereo balanced outputs feature high quality low impedance differential line drivers. These are designed to drive long cable lengths and operate equally well with balanced transformer or transformerless inputs.

A pair of high quality balanced 1/4" cables are included with the cuïr. These cables are braided, 150cm long, shielded and feature gold plated TRS contacts. Using these cables (or any quality balanced TRS cable) the cuïr can be used to connect modular systems directly to mixing consoles, microphone preamps or any other pieces of professional outboard audio equipment.

• Stereo modular level to 1/4” balanced line output
• High quality 150cm balanced cables included
• Dedicated headphone driver"

Instruō Introduces Neóni Through-Zero FM Eurorack Module

Instruō - Neóni Overviewvideo upload by Instruō | To learn about Through-Zero Frequency Modulation specifically, Skip to 56:52.

FM with tonality! At its core, the Instruō neóni is a traditional analogue oscillator. What sets it apart from other oscillators in the Instruō product line is it’s Through-Zero FM functionality with AC and DC coupled operation. Add that to its precision soft sync and directional hard sync modes, nonlinear wavefolding, internal modulation routings, and you end up with the most tonal FM sounds imaginable.

Unlike traditional FM, where an oscillator momentarily stalls as negative voltage pulls its frequency down to 0 Hz, neóni inverts the polarity
of its waveforms until positive voltage pulls it back through 0 Hz.
This behavior allows for complex waveforms with less non-harmonic sidebands. Less clang, more bang!
Drop it all to subsonic territory for organic modulations of morphable voltage.

• Linear through-zero & traditional FM with AC & DC coupled functionality
• Internal modulation routing and general-purpose CV input with attenuator
• Split sawtooth morphing and nonlinear wavefolding
• Precision soft sync
• Directional hard sync
• Individual waveform outputs
• LFO mode"

'Moonlight Sonata' - Eurorack Modular Rendition

video upload by Piotr Garbaczonek

"Thanks for watching!
#modular #eurorack #moonlightsonata

This time around all sounds that are being heard, come from the modular system, but the entire sequence is comprised of 4 monophonic MIDI tracks inside of Ableton. Each of the tracks has a CV Instrument plugin from the CV tools package. I am using my Expert Sleepers ES-9, which is a DC-coupled interface, which allows me to send clock data, CV, and Gate outputs directly from Ableton into eurorack modular without a need of a MIDI interface. I am using 4 monophonic tracks because the interface has 8 DC-coupled outputs, which are being used as follows:
1- Gate for melody track 1
The first gate out is going into the first input on the Ornament & Crime Digital Multi-function module in 4 x EG mode, which gives it 4 variable-clock envelope generators with a visual oscilloscope. From there, gate output from o_C goes into Mutable Instruments Plaits as a trigger input. The output of plaits goes through the first channel of Qu-Bit Tone for filtering, and then into the first channel on a quad VCA, and then into the first audio output on the ES-9.
2- Pitch/CV for melody track 1
The first pitch/CV out is going into the 1V/Oct input on the Mutable Instruments Plaits, to control the pitch of it, directly from Ableton’s first monophonic track.
3- Gate from melody track 2
The 2nd gate out is going into the Ornament & Crime’s (o_C) second envelope generator. Then it goes into the Strum input on the Mutable Instruments Rings, which is the 2nd oscillator in this patch. From Rings we have the identical signal patch as on the first track, but on the 2nd channel of each subsequent module. (Filter → VCA → Out)
4- Pitch/CV for melody track 2
The second pitch/CV out is going into the 1V/Oct input on the Mutable Instruments Rings, to control the pitch of it, directly from Ableton’s second monophonic track.
5- Gate for melody track 3
The 3rd gate out is going into the Ornament & Crime’s (o_C) second envelope generator. Then it goes into the CV input on 3rd channel of my VCA: Mutable Instruments Veils. Then it goes right into the audio output 3 on the ES-9.
6- Pitch/CV for melody track 3
The third pitch/CV out is going into the 1V/Oct input on the Instruō Cš-L (Dual Complex Oscillator), to control the pitch of it, directly from Ableton’s third monophonic track.
7- Gate for melody track 4
The 4th gate out is going into the Ornament & Crime’s (o_C) second envelope generator. Then it goes into the CV input on the 4th channel of my VCA: Mutable Instruments Veils. Then it goes right into the audio output 4 on the ES-9.
8- Pitch/CV for melody track 4
The fourth pitch/CV out is going into the second channel’s 1V/Oct input on the Instruō Cš-L (Dual Complex Oscillator), to control the pitch of it, directly from Ableton’s third monophonic track.

Now we get into the surround and miscellaneous modulations, which control the piece’s stereo movement, giving it spaciousness and an emotional feel. The output from Mutable Instruments Plaits is split, the first route is going just like it is described in the first 2 points above. The split output is going into the Mutable Instruments Clouds (which is being heavily modulated by the Divkid øchd module (8 drifting LFO). And then from there, it is going stereo l/r out into the ES-9s extra inputs. The Rings output follows the same convention, as it is also being split, but it on the other hand goes through Instruō Arbhar, and then into Instruō Lúbadh for additional processing. The stereo output from Arbhar is going into the ES-9, and one of the outputs from there is being split to also go into the Lúbadh. (Arbhar is a granular processor, and Lúbadh is a digital 2-track reel-to-reel tape machine)

Additional multi-band compression, EQ, and Limiting are done in the post inside of Ableton on the Bus level to minimize the unnecessarily large amount of processing, for a clear modular tonality.

Cool Ambient Patch on Blue Marvin 2600 & Eurorack ( Instruō Tágh & Harmonàig; Elements & Ripples)

video upload by Piotr Garbaczonek

"Thanks for watching!
Made a cool experimental patch using the Blue Marvin 2600 and some eurorack modules below it on the TipTop Audio Happy Ending Kit.
The modules I am using are:
- Instruō Tágh (Sample and hold out to Harmonàig)
- Instruō Harmonàig (Quantization and gate output to MI Elements)
- Instruō/Divkid øchd (Modulation to various places)
- Mutable Instruments Elements (Main Stereo Oscillator, first out goes through Ripples and then out; second out goes through 2600's filter and then out)
- Mutable Instruments Ripples for low-pass-filtering one of Element's outputs
- 2hp Mult for splitting stuff

After going out stereo into Universal Audio Volt interface and into Ableton Live, it goes through Other Desert Cities by Audio Damage, a very cool effects processor, as well as some shimmer. I am also using Blue Marvin's built-in spring Reverb to some extent.

Instruō - Tágh Overview

video upload by Instruō

"Instruō - tágh
Now available!!!
Limited Edition production run.
https://tagh.instruomodular.com/

Sample and Hold circuits have been a central building block to modular systems since the very beginning and for good reason. tágh incorporates all the essentials you’d expect from a sample and hold module with some added touches.

An internal analogue noise source is normalised to the sample input, this can be internally clocked, scaled, slewed and rectified for a stand alone source of tamed random modulation.

Size:
Width: 14HP
Depth: 27mm

Power:
+12V: 50mA
–12V: 70mA

Specifications:
Sample & Hold
Hold & Track (control inverted T&H)
Analogue noise source
Internal clock
Attenuator and optional full-wave rectifier on input signal
Slew on output signal"

first patch | instruō arbhar | granular eurorack modular synthesizer

Published on Jan 9, 2020 Elinch

"first in-between patch with the new instruō arbhar module. Simply record 6 different sources and morph between the layers.
finally pitch wild."

choir is a sample machine from the er-301. sequence is the intellijel dixie II +, whose signal goes into the manhattan analog svvcf and the lofi junky into clouds.
instruō arbhar also goes in clouds.

recorded live with tascam dr 100. no audio processing. for the best listening experience listen to the video with headphones or good speakers.

Experimental Glitchy Eurorack Performance (BIA, Plaits, Bitbox Micro etc.)

video upload by Piotr Garbaczonek

Thanks for watching!
The goal for this patch was to essentially try to sound like Richard Devine's style of modular performance but with far less gear, so only 2 cases worth of modules. There are quite a bit of voices in this patch, including:
- Noise Engineering Basimilus Iteritas Alter
- Mutable Instruments Plaits
- Mutable Instruments Rings
- Instruō Cruïnn
- Instruō Arbhar
- Instruō Lúbadh
- 1010music Bitbox Micro
- Moog Subharmonicon

Instruō - Saïch Oscillator

Instruō

See the dealers on the right for availibility.

"The Instruō saïch is a quad oscillator with super-saw functionality and built in “smart” VCA mixing. At its core are four fully analogue sawtooth waveforms that can be intervallically offset, individually and globally detuned, transformed and transposed, and mixed together in creative and interesting ways.

A perfect companion for the harmonàig quantiser, it can easily create harmonically structured chord voicings perfect for lush subtractive patching. Paraphonic patching in analogue with eurorack has now become considerably more convenient!

No quad quantiser in your system? Not to worry!
saïch includes beautifully simple diatonic modes allowing for the creation of
Ionian and Aeolian chord scales with a single 1V/octave CV source."
