Road Testing Reason 9 - Hear ALL the New Sounds!

Published on Jun 27, 2016 Propellerhead

9 hour road trip from Los Angeles to the Grand Canyon! Curious if this sets the record for longest video post ever.

"You may know that Reason 9 includes over a thousand new cutting-edge sounds from professional sound designers to ignite new musical ideas for you but what do they sound like? We thought you'd want to know so we got our friend Jake Shaw to play them... all of them. For this epic challenge we set out on an equally epic road trip into the California desert. How far will Jake get before he gives up? How far down the road can you get before you've played all of Reason 9's new sounds? Find out for yourself - but you'll probably want to put off binge-watching the latest season of your favorite show because this will take you just as long to get through.

(For those asking, that keyboard is a CME xKey 37)"

Superbooth 2023: Decksaver - New Covers

video upload by sonicstate

"We spoke to Jake from Decksaver at Superbooth 2023 where they showcased a wide range of new covers. The company is known for providing high-quality polycarbonate covers for various musical equipment to keep them safe from damage. Some of their newest releases include the Decksaver for Summit, the 4ms 48 and 64x pods, the Roland Boutique range, the Erica Bassline, and the LXR. They also have covers for cheaper equipment like the Akai mini play and the Launchkey 37. Jake said that the production cycle takes about three months from research to pre-production, depending on the type and size of the equipment.

One of the unique features of Decksaver is that they offer custom covers working closely with the instrument manufacturers. They also use different weights of polycarbonate material depending on the equipment's size and type, with prices ranging from £15 to £120. Decksaver's covers are favored by many musicians, including a famous artist who saved thousands of pounds worth of equipment from damage due to a leak in his studio by using Decksaver covers."

Published on Sep 30, 2015 Ace Waters

"I was once again watching a good friend play through Mega Man 3, and the second Wily Castle song really stuck out to me. Originally it was going to be more low key, but Jake took it in another direction with his drums, and it really made the song something special. Huge thanks to Jake and Rich for bringing this song to life!"

We are all just waves in a wavetable...

Last month I received a Facebook message stating I had been tagged in this image from Billy Kurniadi's Photos. I noted the custom wood knobs, and thought, how cool, so of course I posted it. I saw a ton of other names tagged as well, many I recognized like James Maeier aka Carbon111 who hosts the excellent XT resource site, Stefan Trippler who hosts trippler.net, Wolfram Franke and Stefan Stenzel of Waldorf, Wolfgang Palm of PPG, the father of wavetable synthesis, and too many others to list here. See Facebook here for the full list. I thought we were all tagged to check out the wood knobs. I'm sure this was the case, however, there might have been another reason. What didn't occur to me at the time was what might have been the actual reference to the tagged names. We are all just waves in a wavetable, waves in synthesis. That is pretty cool.

For those not familiar with wavetable synthesis, in short, a wavetable synth uses wavetables for it's main oscillators. Rather than a basic saw, square, sine, triangle or sample as the source waveform, you have access to a table of multiple single cycle waveforms. A single cycle waveform is pretty much a single snapshot of what you'd see in an oscilloscope. Think of a wavetable as a spreadsheet with each cell containing a different snapshot. In the XT, each wavetable has 64 cells. You can either select one of the static waveforms and use it as an oscillator waveform like you would a saw, square or other waveform, or you can "sweep" through the table by applying any available modulation source like an LFO or envelope. This is how you get evolving textures out of a wavetable synth. For more see Carbon111t's site and Till Kopper's Waldorf FAQ site.

Update: I originally stated Stefan Trippler hosted the Waldorf FAQ site. It's actually Till Kopper.

If you can't get to the Facebook link, click below for the list.
