New Korg Wavestate Wave Sequencing Synthesizer Revealed

Published on Jan 6, 2020 Korg

Update: Details are in... Playlist with the first user videos added below.

"Legendary synthesis, radically re-imagined. Organic, inspirational, and mind-blowingly powerful.

KORG’s legendary Wavestation introduced the world to Wave Sequencing, transforming raw samples into sounds that no-one had ever heard before. The flagship OASYS and KRONOS keyboards developed Wave Sequencing even further, expanding on its unique palette of lush, evolving pads and driving rhythms.

Now, KORG is proud to announce the next step in digital synthesis: the wavestate. Featuring the radically re-imagined Wave Sequencing 2.0, the wavestate delivers astonishing, ever-changing sounds with extensive hands-on control.

Far from a nostalgic reissue, the wavestate is designed from the ground up for a new generation of musicians, producers, and composers, taking cues from sources as diverse as modular synths, groove boxes, and algorithmic composition. The compact form-factor, with 37 full-size keys, transports easily and fits neatly into any stage, studio, or desktop setup."

Highlights:

"With the Wavestation, each step of a Wave Sequence had a duration, a sample, and a pitch. This created ear-catching patterns–but the patterns repeated the same way, over and over. What if they could evolve in organic, unexpected ways, instead of just repeating?

Wave Sequencing 2.0 splits apart the timing, the sequence of samples, and the melody, so that each can be manipulated independently. Also added are new characteristics including shapes, gate times, and step sequencer values. Each of these is a “Lane,” and each Lane can have a different number of steps and its own start, end, and loop points.

Every time the sequence moves forward, the individual Lanes are combined to create the output. For instance, a sample may be matched with a different duration, pitch, shape, gate length, and step sequence value every time that it plays. You can modulate each Lane’s start, end, and loop points separately for every note, using velocity, LFOs, envelopes, Mod Knobs, or other controllers. Each note in a chord can be playing something different!

Lanes can also randomize the step order every time they play, with realtime control over the range of included steps. Finally, individual steps can be randomly skipped, with a modulatable probability from 0 to 100%. The result is organic, ever-changing sounds that respond to your control. The four onboard arpeggiators can interact with Wave Sequences for even more possibilities."

"KORG R&D created the original Wavestation, co-created the OASYS and Kronos, and has developed fundamental technologies behind many other KORG instruments. The wavestate reflects their unique aesthetic, delivering stunning sound and deep flexibility via cutting-edge technologies.

Three of the key sound designers from the original Wavestation, John Bowen [of John Bowen Synth Design & the Solaris], John “Skippy” Lehmkuhl (Plugin Guru), and Peter “Ski” Schwartz, joined Belgian artist Airwave and the renowned KORG voicing team to create the incredible wavestate sound library."

"Bursting with knobs and controllers, the wavestate invites you to explore. All of the basics–filter, envelopes, LFOs, effects–are at your fingertips with dedicated front-panel controls. Eight programmable Mod Knobs are customized to bring out the most in every sound, often taking them in entirely new directions. Use the knobs in realtime performance, and also save the results as new sounds. Add in the Pitch Bend and Modulation Wheels and the unique Vector Joystick, and you’ll always have multiple dimensions of realtime expression.

Want to dig deeper? Almost all front-panel knobs, and most on-screen parameters, can be modulated. You can even modulate settings for individual Wave Sequence Steps! Mod Processors let you transform modulation signals using quantization, smoothing, curvature, and more."

"Randomization that inspires.

Looking for even more inspiration? A dedicated front-panel button, marked by a “dice” icon, generates new sounds via intelligent randomization. Randomize the entire sound or just a part of it, such as the filter, the Sample Lane, or the effects. Use the results directly, or as a jumping-off point for your own creations.
An arsenal of effects.

The wavestate’s superb effects deliver production-ready sounds. Each Layer has three dedicated effects; additionally, the Performance has a master reverb and parametric EQ. Along with standards such as compressors, EQs, choruses, flangers, phasers, and stereo delays, you’ll find distinctive processors such as the Wave Shaper, Talking Modulator, Reverse Delay, Multiband Mod Delay, and Overb (from the OASYS), plus modeled effects including VOX guitar amps, VOX wah, multi-head tape echo, and a collection of classic guitar pedals."

"Choose your filter.

Add vintage character to your sounds with the aggressive MS-20 Lowpass or Highpass filters, or the strong, sweet Polysix Lowpass. Shape and refine with a full collection of resonant 2-pole and 4-pole Lowpass, Highpass, Bandpass, and Band Reject filters. Or, step outside the box with KORG’s unique Multi Filter, which creates modulatable blends of multiple modes simultaneously.
Ample samples. 64 stereo voices.

Totaling in the gigabytes, the wavestate’s sample library is more than a thousand times larger than that of the original Wavestation. That’s a lot of great-sounding raw material for Wave Sequences. There’s a bank of samples from Plugin Guru, brand-new samples from KORG, and a selection from the Kronos and Krome libraries. Of course, KORG also provides all of the Wavestation’s samples (including all options), plus a huge library of Wavestation Wave Sequences. Play up to 64 stereo voices with pristine clarity, using KORG’s proprietary anti-aliasing sample playback technology."

"Multiply by four.

With all of that synthesis power, you might think the wavestate would play only one sound at a time. Not a chance. For even more rich and complex results, layer up to four Programs together in a Performance–each with their own effects and arpeggiator. The Vector Envelope and Joystick mix the individual voices of the four Layers, and can also modulate any other parameters."

"Set Lists and Smooth Sound Transitions.

Set Lists offer effortless organization of your wavestate Performances, and deliver instant access at the gig or in rehearsal. Smooth Sound Transitions allow previously-played voices and effects to continue to ring out naturally, even once a new sound has been selected.
Plays well with others.

Balanced stereo outputs connect to any recording or monitoring system, and a stereo headphone output is provided for private playing or onstage cueing. Din-style MIDI jacks ensure connection to other MIDI-equipped instruments and audio gear. The wavestate supports class-compliant USB MIDI connections to Windows and Mac computers, and the wavestate librarian program is available as free download from KORG."

NAMM 2020: Korg Wavestate Sounds

Published on Jan 21, 2020 Perfect Circuit

"Korg's Wavestate revisits the sounds of the 1990s Wavestation, bringing wave sequencing and vector synthesis into the 2020s.

The Wavestate features four "oscillators" per voice—oscillators which scan wave shapes from an enormous bank of PCM sounds. By sequencing the order of waveforms per oscillator, effects ranging from smooth wavetable shifting to all-out percussive soundscapes can unfold, leaving the Wavestate with an uncommonly large sonic range. Not bound to the sounds possible with simple oscillators, the Wavestate's advanced options for waveform sequencing and modulation make it a perfect choice for animated textures, rich soundscapes, and deep, cinematic pads.

Wavestate is expected to ship soon, so expect to hear more brooding, undulating soundscapes and peculiar timbral sequences on the horizon.

Charlottenburg, Live Ambient Impro, Wavestate, MicroFreak v3, Volca Drum, Monologue

video by Waveformer

"In this live improvised jam, I introduce the Wavestate to some old and new friends - MicroFreak, Monologue, Volca Drum, Novation Circuit, 3 Zoom MS-70CDRs and Korg NTS-1. The only prerecorded sequence is the drums on Volca Drum. The rest of the jam is live playing and active use of the arpeggiators on the Wavestate and MicroFreak. The recorded video is annotated with some notes about the performance.

During the jam, I let each synth/layer have a solo part where it is up front and center - the MicroFreak, the Monologue and the two arp parts and the pad part on the Wavestate. I try to think of them as different members of a band.

My music on Bandcamp: http://waveformer42.bandcamp.com/

The Wavestate patch/performance is a slightly modified version of "WF Charlottenburg" and is a part of the "Berlin School and Ambient Construction Kit" available here: https://gumroad.com/waveformer.

It has four layers - 2 arpeggiators, one arpeggiated bass and one pad. I added some inharmonic wavesamples to steps 9-16 of the pad sample wavesequence, moved around a few notes and rests on the timing lanes for the two arps, added some octave shifts to the pitch sequences, and some ratcheting to one of the arps.

During the jam, I play around with the wavesequence lanes for all the four layers - timing lane to change rhythm, sample lane to vary the wavesamples, pitch lane to add some octave changes to some notes, shape to add ratcheting, and gate to add some variation to note length. The wavesequence loop lengths are different from lane to lane, creating interesting polymeter effects. I also modify pan, filter cutoff, envelope decay and reverb mix through the jam.

"The Ultimate Union of Power and Performance

opsix SE is a digital synth like no other. With a premium all-metal design, 61-keys, and aftertouch, it unlocks a new world of sonic capabilities. Building on the expansive sound engine in the original opsix, opsix SE enhances it with increased polyphony and voicing, resulting in a synthesizer created for superior performance and precise control.

The opsix Operator Mixer simplified FM synthesis for the first time, making it not just comprehensible but also controllable. With the addition of extra synthesis capabilities and programming, it offered a more efficient workflow and an even richer sound.

The opsix SE takes this even further. It is equipped with Korg's premium 61-key natural-touch keyboard, complete with aftertouch, delivering the exceptional tactile experience expected from Korg's flagship workstations. With a sleek, robust metal body, it's built for both the intensity of live gigs and the precision of studio sessions. The metallic knobs are optimally weighted for effortless adjustments. Underneath its exterior, the opsix SE boasts an incredible capacity of 80 stereo voices of polyphony.

The opsix SE arrives preloaded with hundreds of sounds enhanced for aftertouch control. Moreover, it is fully compatible with the sounds and samples from both the original opsix and the opsix Native software, including numerous high-quality libraries.

The limited color model, wavestate SE Platinum, is released at the same time as the wavestate SE. The Platinum edition features the same 61 keys with aftertouch and comes with a hard case as the wavestate SE, while the premium silver aluminum panel and stainless steel side panels, which are only available on this special model, create an overwhelming presence on stage and in the studio.

Also included is an original sticker with the KORG logo. The wavestate SE Platinum is available in limited quantities, so be sure to get yours soon."

Korg Wavestate Berlin School Ambient Jam, Alexanderplatz

Waveformer

"This is a berlin school style jam on the Korg Wavestate using only one custom patch for the whole jam, recorded in one take. The jam uses the Wavestate's arpeggiators combined with wavesequences to create interesting melodic, timbral and rhythmic variations. Also, I finally figured out how to to proper racheting (note repeat) with retriggering envelopes. Note to self: read the manual more carefully next time. The Wavestate really is a fantastic synth for improvised generative music. The patch is available for download (see the video description below).

My music on Bandcamp: http://waveformer42.bandcamp.com/

The patch/performance uses four layers. Layer A, C and D use arpeggiators. Layer B is used for chords. All layers have overlapping keyboard zones, so the same notes goes into all four layers. The three arpeggiators are configured with note sorting off. This makes the arpeggiator somewhat resemble a very simple looper, repeating the played pattern.

Layer A plays an arpeggiated melody. The gate wavesequence has 16 beats. The first 8 steps have a few rests (gate length 0), the last 8 steps are all rests (giving more space to melodies from the other layers). I change the gate wavesequence loop length between 8 and 16 throughout the jam, so sometimes this layer is more busy than others. Also I used the step wavesequence and the Pitch LFO to add a strong vibrato on every 31st beat, kind of simulating tape flutter on a tape delay (yes, I have been listening to Nils Frahm's "Says" and "All Melody").

Layer B is a pad sound used for chords. I use a foot switch to hold the notes for the chords, leaving me with both hands free to tweak knobs. This patch uses the Amp LFO to create variations in the pad. The Pitch LFO modulates the Amp LFO Frequency so it varies slowly from slow to fast. I change the Amp LFO Intensity and waveform during the jam, so sometimes the pad is more plinky-plonky than smooth, like at the end of the jam.

Layer C is another arpeggiated melodic part. I finally figured out how to create proper ratcheting (note repeat) on the Wavestate. The envelopes can be set to trigger from any source, not just note on! So I set the filter envelope to be triggered by Mod Processor 1. And Mod Processor 1 does a scale operation on the Amp LFO and the Step Sequence Lane. The Amp LFO is tempo synced with frequency set to dotted 32nd notes and waveform set to saw ramp up. In the Step Sequence Lane, a step with value -100% means a normal note, and a value of 0% means racheting with proper retriggering of the filter envelope. Yay!

For Layer C, I also play with the sample wavesequence, changing loop start and end. There's a very nice interplay with the loop length and the number of notes that the arpeggiator plays. Fun times.

Layer D does bass, with notes from the arpeggiator. Gate wavesequence has lots of rests, making the arpeggiator much more interesting. Again, the number of notes that the arpeggiator plays combined with the rythmic pattern laid out by the gate wavesequence results in lots of variations.

Performance mod knobs:
Knob 1: Layer A (arp 1) Octave
Knob 2: Layer B (pad) Octave
Knob 3: Layer C (arp 2) Octave
Knob 4: Layer D (bass) Octave
Knob 5: Layer A (arp 1) Amp Level
Knob 6: Layer B (pad) Amp Level
Knob 7: Layer C (arp 2) Amp Level
Knob 8: Layer D (bass) Amp Level

I use knob 5-8 to fade the 4 different layers in and out. And knobs 1-4 to change the octave for each layer, so layer D can play bass most of the time, but by setting a higher octave, it is playing an arpeggiated melody. Layer C plays an arpeggiated melody most of the time, but using the octave knob, it can also do bass duty.

The patch is called "WF Alexanderplatz" and can be downloaded from the files section of the "Korg Wavestate Q/A Sharing" facebook group.

The audio is recorded to SD card on a Zoom R16 and normalized in Audacity. Video is recorded on iPhoneX. Audio and video is synchronized in DaVinci Resolve 15."

"Ichika's Brand New Dress" - Akai MPC X, Korg Wavestate, Minilogue XD, Sequential Prophet REV2

video by Patrick Manderson

"'Ichika's Brand New Dress' - recorded live on February 27, 2021 using a MIDI sequencer, 3 mixers and room full of synthesizers.

The roots of "Ichika's" was composed on a Yamaha RS7000 sequencer and left unfinished for several years. The intricate timings and swing notes were too difficult to mix when overdubbing and editing on the RS7000 and was nearly abandoned altogether. Fast forward to December 2020 - I don't think I would have ever finished this without the Akai MPC X. It's essentially a sports car wrapped around a Rolls Royce. The 10" display is comfortable to use and the generous physicality of buttons, knobs, OLED displays make editing a breeze. Mixing straight notes, with triplets and swing was something nearly impossible to manage on the RS. The MPC not only made it easy, but I never felt constrained to try things out. Although I may never touch its sampler and built-in synths, the MIDI capabilities alone are amazing and worth the price - especially coming from the RS7000.

The breakout stars of this piece are the Korg Wavestate and the Sequential REV2 which due to its versatility played the bulk of parts [00:11], [01:13], [0:31], [05:50] both layered and split all throughout [02:27], [02:56], [04:32]. Its generous modulation capabilities allowed nuance everywhere needed especially since the MPC X made editing so much easier. Velocity and the MOD wheel are used primarily to articulate notes; discrete use of specific CC modulations were also used. The digital distortion and filter modulations were synchronized with MIDI [04:52].

The Wavestate's factory patches are so expertly designed although I found it difficult to fit them in initially. Luckily I know enough to adjust the envelopes to get a good fitting. Still the Wavestate remains a challenge for me to wrap my head around. Swirling strings [02:03], [02:38], [03:50] and bell tones [02:29].

Drums - I'm surprised how many drums are in this. The Roland TR8s was used to replace RS7000 analog kit used in the original 'Ichika's'. The MDX 1400 was used to compress the 808 kick. Two acoustic kits from the Yamaha Motif XS were tweaked to make use of its built-in VCM compressors - room reverb first, then the compression. Most of the acoustic kit performance was sequenced on the RS7000 and later tweaked on the MPC X. The crash choke was made by playing a regular crash using a second note at a lower velocity (greater than zero) at [05:14]. The delicious sound of the Boss DR-660 [03:26] was added to "Ichika's" recently as new sections using the Wavestate were created. The Alesis 3630 was used to tame the dynamics of the DR-660, especially the toms. Lastly, my custom "noise and sine" kit on the Korg Radias embellishes all through the piece.

The Korg EX-8000 had a minor role except for the amazing sweeping patch showered in its digital delay [03:27], [03:48]. I believe an original preset patch with minor tweaks on the envelopes.

Upbeat vox played by the Korg Radias near the beginning [00:12] and at the end [05:25], also modulated here [01:22] and here [01:32].

The original Minilogue wears its characterful filter again throughout "Ichika's", reusing patches from previous arrangements. Layered up, the Minilogue XD *high-def* embellishments filled in when needed.

The lightning acrobatics of the Novation Bass Station II and its ability to switch patches on a tick emphasized individual notes in a few places [01:27], [03:36]. Unfortunately my mixing isn't sufficient to put these subleties out front enough to hear.

Brassy swells [00:53] and stringy melodies [02:06] on the Prophet 6. Digital voice chatter here [02:30] and here [03:18], melodic emphasis on the main parts [00:11] on the Korg MS 2000 - shining near the end with a chaotic sequence of LFO modulations [04:52].

The Yamaha Tx81Z played a minor part filling in space when needed [01:00], [05:17].

Video from a Canon EOS SL3 was captured over a two day period while the audio was recorded after getting a satisfying take."
