"Modal Electronics review, going through and sound demo.

The Modulus 002 was the first synthesizer from the new established company Modal Electronics from Bristol, UK in 2015. The frist batches named Modulus 002. Because of legal issues the name changed to Modal 002.

It was developed mainly by Paula Maddox, who wanted to set the spirit oft he PPG wave in the next century. The Modal 002 uses NCO oscillators, which have a variable sample rate and sound more alive than DSP. Beside that the Signal Path ist full analog alongside with a marvelous sounding ladder filter.

Because of bad marketing and a very steep price the Modal 002 was not very successful when relaunched. Also there were a lot of bugs in the software and some audio issues which caused a bad publicity in forums. Meanwhile the 002 is grown up, the last big update was relaunched in 2019.

For me the 002 is the real sucessor of the PPG wave, it really sounds astonishing. It is one of the best hybrid synthesizers which have been ever bulit. This is my opinion. Unfortunately you can’t get this synth new from Modal Electronics, just on the used market from time to time.

I recorded the 002 directly with two audio jacks in a stereo track into my interface. There is no mastering, external FX and compression. In some patches you can listen to internal FX. The patches I used I got from a great youtube fellow, Sean Christopher Dockery (Quantum 7 on gearslutz). Thank you very much, Sean for those great patches.

The first 15 minutes of this video I go through most functions and parameters. In the second part beginning from 15:20​ I play a bunch of sounds, first mostly pads, later on leads, basses, bells and organ style sounds.

Daydrifta is my offering to the gaseous synth god of Argon. An intricate and beautiful sounding synth, the Argon8 delivers shimmering sonics and glassy undulations in abundance.

Whilst the Argon8 is known as a majestic synth for ambient based genres, I also probed it's other side to see where it leads. And I found plenty! Crunchy crashes, kicks, analog renditions, tortured leads and arps and some wubs to keep those Cobalt cravings at bay!

Bristol, UK - 7 September 2022. Modal Electronics, a leading global synthesiser manufacturer, today announced Filton, a 20HP Dual Analogue Transistor Ladder Filter Module for Eurorack.

Based on the most popular classic filter design in synth history, Filton delivers the distinctive saturated transistor overdrive, resonant harmonic peaks and warm analogue timbres that is adored by many synth lovers for generations. In our acclaimed 002 synth we introduced the concept of polesweeping into the circuitry to allow seamless filter morphing from four pole through bandpass to one pole 6db per octave, or anywhere in between.

Since then, we were asked by many to release the 002 filter as a separate product to use with external sound sources or in Eurorack setups. Filton is our answer to these passionate musicians and producers.

Although the ladder filter within Filton incorporates the same filter circuitry from the 002 synthesiser, Modal made many alterations to the original design to improve both stability and sound. Also, this module contains two discrete filters rather than just one, to process two sound signals independently or allow for series or parallel processing of a single source.

Each filter features an audio input, four analogue CVs with attenuvertor controls for FM, Resonance, Morph and Level, pitch tracking provided by the 1V/Oct input, an audio output and a mixed output. All CV inputs on Filter A have been normalled to Filter B, meaning any CV signal plugged into Filter A is automatically sent to Filter B if nothing is plugged into the corresponding input.

Filton will be available as a limited Kickstarter edition from 7th September 2022. Modal has no plans to distribute it using its usual distribution network. Various pledge models are available, whereas a single Filton module will be at £299.

For those who don't know, this synth is the brain child of George Hearn, the co-founder of the current synth manufacturer U.D.O. This synth is in mint condition. It looks and works great. "The Modal Electronics CRAFTsynth is a digital monophonic synthesizer kit which can be assembled (without need to solder) in less than 10 minutes. For a small format synth kit, the Modal CRAFT features some advanced features usually only found in much higher priced synths. Modal Electronics' Insolvent Case

Insolvent is when you are unable to pay your bills.

According to gov.uk, there is currently one case filed against Modal Electronics. Note this does not necessarily mean the end of Modal Electronics. I'm not crazy about sharing dirty laundry as this case could go away, but the news is being shared and synth news is definitely part of this site.

According to gov.uk's guidence:

"‘Insolvency’ describes both the situation an insolvent company is in, and also the various legal procedures for dealing with this situation under the Insolvency Act 1986.

There are 3 options that allow an insolvent company to continue trading. Directors can:

contact all your creditors to see if you can reach an informal agreement

enter into a company voluntary arrangement

put the company into administration, offering some respite from creditor action and enabling:

the company to continue

property to be sold

You also have the option of liquidating (‘winding up’) your company. This means the company is closed down and its assets are sold and distributed to its creditors."
