New Mutable Music Things – Ears Eurorack Module

Wait a sec. Mutable as in Mutable Instruments, Music Things as in Music Thing? That is correct.

via Thonk

"Ears is Mutable’s take on the Music Thing Modular Mikrophonie module, Ears is a perfect match for physical synthesis modules like Rings or Elements, but it can also be the gateway between external audio sources and your modular system.

We don’t normally stock non DIY products at Thonk, but when Olivier offered us a worldwide exclusive on the first batch of his new Ears module… how could we refuse?!

This module brings together two of the most (if not the most..) prolific and creative designers in the open source Eurorack scene, Mutable Instruments and Music Thing Modular.

Ears is Mutable’s take on Tom Whitwell’s Mikrophonie module, Ears is a perfect match for physical synthesis modules like Rings or Elements, but it can also be the gateway between external audio sources and your modular system.

And a couple of user videos:

"First play today with Ears, Mutable Instruments take on Tom Whitwell’s Mikrophonie module. Literally only the first patch set up wto test it out today. Qu-Bit Electronix provides a constant drone, taking a loop of my voice humming away, as Elements is played by Ears, with the various changes affected by my touch. Arturia BeatStep Pro offers up the melodic content. Simple but fun. This looks likely to live in my performance case for some time now!"

amygdala.exe | Eurorack Composition

Published on Jul 10, 2017 Head[Space]

"Modules used and some brief patch notes:

All sequencing is programmed on a pair of ER-101's, one of which is coupled to a ER-102 sister controller module.

Continuing on my journey of creating music solely on a modular synthesiser, this song has been in the works for a while (a lot longer than I would usually spend on a patch anyway) partially because i'm expecting an ER-301 any day now after a long lead time, I wanted to integrate the 301 as i'm interested how the 301 is going to affect the music I can create in a modular environment, i'm excited to sink my teeth into it. Secondly to that, I felt an emotional connection with this track i've enjoyed listening to it, exploring it and programming it.

At the heart of my rack is a pair of ER-101's that do all of the sequencing, each one has 4 tracks, each track has 3 outputs (CV-A,CV--B and GATE) I will often use CV-A for melody or pitch and CV-B for distributing control voltages to parameters around the rack, if however CV-A is on a track that is only outputting Gates that gives me 2 channels of CV that can be fine tuned to any value, lots of control just the way I like it. I've always written music in a DAW, and the ER-101 pair allows me to approach sequencing in a similar, reserved and meticulous way.

They provide me with all the brushes I need for my paintings.

There are 3 main voices,
- Elements in Ominous Voice mode 4x4 FM operator, which is the main melody. Damping controls the amount of filter modulation from the internal envelope on the output of Elements, so to add accents and introduce more frequency content. CV-B track 3 on the ER-101 controls damping, and the entirety of track 3 controls Elements.
- Loquelic Iteritas - in SS mode playing chords with rings. Some modulation sent from Ornament and Crime controls FOLD (introducing more frequency content) using the same gate to trigger a different envelope.
- Rings in 2x2 FM operator mode, tuned to a nice interval for nice dispersion of harmonics. This plays chords with Loquelic (and itself, polyphony is set to 4 voices), small amount of modulation to the POSITION on Rings, controlling the feedback between oscillators creating some really nice beating on the lower frequencies. Rings is sent to the Erbe-verb which is always modulating itself so the internal Lfo is set to 11.30, decay is set to 12.00, Depth at 14.00 decreasing the depth of modulation, Tilt at 10.00 filtering out some of the upper harmonics and absorb is at 12.00 also filtering / dulling, ultimately thickening the sound the Erbe-verb is fantastic.

Clouds is processing Loquelic, creating random grains and adding reverb

DPO - is used for the kick created using Streams as a VCA / Envelope combo Exponential envelope and a second envelope from MATHS to modulate the exponential FM input on the DPO for a sharp descending pitch.

DPO second oscillator FINAL output is used to create the percussion, fm sent from VCO-A to VCO-B FM index all the way up, Exponential attenuator full lock, linear at 10.00. Sent to Dual looping delay, the DLD's parameters are modulated by the ER-101.

Braids is used to create a snare, using its internal envelopes / modulation. Also sent to the DLD, delay time is modulated from really short times to slower, to create fills.

Belgrad is filtering the Loquelic Iteritas' more digital harmonics out. with 2 different resonant peaks, allowing me to pick out the harmonics I thought sounded best.

Folktek Mescaline - Mutable Instruments Elements + Edges - Reverbs, Delays & Instant Lo-Fi Junky

Published on Dec 21, 2017 isvisible isinvisible

"The Folktek 'Mescaline' is providing the percussion (everything apart from the quiet snare sound which is from Braids) and the low repeating lush reverbed sound.

The wonky continuous slightly phased sound is 'Edges' going through my 'Bistromath', a ZVex 'Instant Lo-Fi Junky', Mungo 'd0' and an SDS Digital 'Reflex Liveloop'.

The slightly orchestral-ish sound is a Mutable Instruments 'Elements' fed into a Tiptop 'ZDSP' and then fed back in on itself.

The struck bowl (more like clunky synth percussion to be honest) type sounds that come in towards the end are the Livewire 'Dalek Modulator' going through a Doepfer 'A-188-2' delay.

Some sequencing being done by a Polyend 'Seq' via the 'Poly' module, and some being done by a 'Turing Manchine' and a Doepfer 'A-155'.

Triggers and gates being provided by an ALM 'Pamela's Workout, Mutable Instruments 'Grids' and Iron Ether's 'Pithoprakta'.

Modulation being provided by Livewire 'Chaos Computer', Mutable Instruments 'Peaks', Ian Fritz 'Bistromath' and a few other things, along with some Doepfer envelopes."

Mutable Instruments - Elements: Dark Orchestra [vs Edges & Akemie's Taiko: Jaunty Melody]

Published on Jul 23, 2017 isvisible / isinvisible

"Working on a new track.

Mutable Instruments - Elements: one output being fed back into itself via a vca and filter, and lots of outputs from the Livewire Chaos Computer controlling a lot of inputs on the Elements.
I use this patch, or a variation of it quite a lot and have given it the nick name The Dark Orchestra.

Mutable Instruments - Edges: Running an arpeggio from a Korg MicroKey through a Polyend Poly module and feeding four of the cv's to Edges, and four gates to envelopes to shape the individually filtered (Doepfer filters) outputs of Edges. Then run through input one of the Modcan Dual Delay.

ALM - Akemie's Taiko: Dead simple, cv from the Klee. Then run through input two of the Modcan Dual Delay.

Folktek - Matter: Dead simple, two trigger outs from the Klee, then the output of Matter routed through the Intellijel Springray.

That's about it.

Mutable Instruments 'Elements' - Electric Bass

Published on Feb 18, 2015 isvisible / isinvisible

"Here's a very simple patch with the Mutable Instruments 'Elements' sounding like an electric bass.

Some patch notes:
Klee Sequencer channel A to Quantimator to Elements V/Oct input.
Turing Volts controlling the transpose of Quantimator.
Klee Sequencer channel B to Elements Mallet input.
Grids out to Elements Gate input.

Simple, but effective.

First patch with the Mutable Instruments, Clouds, Elements, Streams and Shelves modules

First patch with the Mutable Instruments, Clouds, Elements, Streams and Shelves modules from Richard Devine on Vimeo.

Sequence starts with a cable connection to the clock output from the Steady State Fate Ultra Random module. This clock output was sent to a intellijel hub mult. From here the clock was sent to first to a 4ms RCD/QCD, Delptronics Trigger Man, and to the MakeNoise Rene. First output gates from 4ms RCD 4 divide output to the trigger input on the Braids module top row, running in "WLM" mode. Second multi output was sent to a 4ms QCD output green channel 4, set at division trigger time of 16. This would trigger single notes on the "Elements" module, that begin at 1:42. The playback mode is running in "Secret Easter Egg Mode" :-) The selected note sequence from the QCV output from Rene. Final output from Elements was sent to the Eventide "Pitch" pedal using the "Crystalizer" algorithm.

Clouds - was processing recorded chunks from the drum percussion, kick used from the top row "Peaks" 808 kick drum synthesis model. Then a snare created from the "grey" noise output from the SSF Quantum rainbow running through right side of Streams to make a snare drum, which was running in envelope mode with shape position to the left, short decay. Then a third voice using the blue noise output from the SSF quantum rainbow for hi-hats. Amplitude triggered/controlled by a HexVCA. The drum sequence was programmed from the Delptronics Triggerman, using all 8 patterns stringed together running in pattern play mode but being CV controlled by the S&H # 1 output from the SSF Ultra Random. Output for all voices was grouped and multiplied into two separate mixers. First three channels of the Intellijel Mutamix, which was then sent to output channel B. From there the summed mix was sent into the "left" side input of Clouds. Then triggered in time with the sequence by a 8th division trigger from the 4ms RCD. The freeze input in Clouds was triggered in time 7th divisions from the 4ms RCD, so that the chunks would process and record then play back in spurts of timed randomness. The mode was set in the pitchshifter/timestretcher configuration, where the grains where spliced so that created interesting granular pitching repeats and percussive glitch effects, as the rhythmic beats played through. Focused ranges where selected for the "Density/Pitchshifter" and "Timestetcher/Texture" controls. These where being controlled by the S&H #2 output from the SSF Ultra Random. The 1/volt pitch input was controlled by the toggle A/B output from the SSF ultra random. The clean drum outputs also sent to the channels 5, 6, and 7 on the Blue Lantern "Mix 'Em Up" module.

Streams left side processing from the MakeNoise Mysteron output, which was being triggered by the 5th division output, for the metallic ripple delay like sounds, with the mutation knob set to counter clockwise, low bit mode.
The "Shelves" module was processing the acid like filter parts that get un-muted at 12 seconds. The sound source running into "Shelves" was the "Braids" module bottom row, running in "CSAW" mode. CV controlled by the CV output from the MakeNoise Rene sent to another intellijel hub mult. From here each CV output was sent to the "Frequency" inputs pink, green and white jacks on "Shelves". The "Tides" high tide output modulation the CV controlling the top frequency input on "Shelves" Each filter knob was set so the incoming "CSAW" input was being processed like a formant filter effect.

Smooth Sub OSC bassline coming from the MakeNoise STO. This was being CV controlled by a intellijel µScale (B) output. Playing back 8 notes while being triggered from the 2nd division trigger on the 4ms RCD. Triangle wave output from a Intellijel Dixie (syncd) to the sequence controlling the input (1V/Oct). Second STO at 55 seconds, alternating high note triggers from the 1 channel output from the 4ms QCD 6th division output. The second STO output sent to a MakeNoise Optomix for short quick plucks.

The light reverb soft lead at 1:15 from sine wave output from another intellijel Dixie, being CV played from the 1V/Oct input from MakeNoise PressurePoints. The output was then ran into a Strymon "BigSky" pedal running the "nonLinear" reverb algorithm. The Chords coming in at 1:35 played by a Qu-Bit Nebulae module. The 4 chord sequence was hand played and recorded from a Roland Jupiter-6,. The sample was then cut into a 32 bar loop and then was restarted/played from a the 3rd output trigger on the 4ms QCD. This output was manually volume controlled by a Intellijel µAttQuad log/lin attenuator. Grids was being clocked from multi output from the SSF Ultra Random, from here the first output trigger channel was sent into a Addac 101 .WAV Player. Notes sequenced and recorded from the Mutable Instruments "Elements" Module. 4 notes in a specific order was played 4 times 32 bars/samples. This was triggered by the gate input triggered by the Gate Y output on Rene. Trill high notes from Microbe Modular Equation Composer running in Synth3Osc is a 3 osc synth mode.
