"MicroFreak receives new oscillator and more in 2.0 firmware update

On top of announcing KeyLab Essential 88 and KeyStep Pro at NAMM 2020, French audio pioneers Arturia have also revealed a surprise update to their incredibly popular MicroFreak digital synth.

The MicroFreak 2.0 update adds several exciting new features and functions, refines some existing ones, and fixes a few minor bugs.

New Features
New Noise oscillator: morph between particle noise, white noise, and a metallic noise that’s reminiscent of a synth cymbal. An exciting new voice that will open up powerful new drum and percussion possibilities in MicroFreak.

Chord Mode: by holding the Paraphony button and playing some notes, you program the chord, then replay the shape with a single key.

Scale quantization: In the Utility settings, you can activate scale quantization to your favorite scale. When activated, the “white notes” on the keyboard play whichever scale you have selected. No more wrong notes!

Sequencer streamlining: in 2.0 firmware update, you’re now able to easily copy Pattern A to Pattern B in an instant.

Matrix initialize: before 2.0 firmware update, if you wanted to clear the Matrix of all routings, you’d have to manually do it. Now you can just hold the Shift and perform a long press on the encoder, and it will clear!
64 New Presets: Loads of exciting sounds to explore using the new oscillator and features.

Improvements
MicroFreak now displays visual feedback even when Local Control is off.
The synth’s Local Control now also translates USB to MIDI Out.
The release of currently playing presets are now cleared when switching to a new one.
The Record LED now blinks on each beat, instead of on 16ths.

Thanks to MicroFreak’s digital mind, the team at Arturia will be able to offer more exciting updates and improvements like this over time, ensuring that MicroFreak is always fresh and relevant.

To update your synth, simply connect it to your computer, load up the Arturia MIDI Control Center, and hit the 'update' button for MicroFreak."

Drumlogue - My First 3 Beats
video upload by Oscillator Sink

"Here are my first 3 beats made with the Drumlogue. Any saturation or compression you hear is coming from the Drumlogue itself - the only processing applied in post is some very gentle shelving EQ on the master bus and a master limiter to bring up the overall volume (which is hardly doing any work, just catching the occasional volume spike.

Beat 1 is probably the most conventional of the 3 beats, using most of the tracks "normally" - of interest though is the "bell/piano" riff which plays at the start (and through much of the track) which is actually the High Tom analogue track, essentially "pinging" the filter with the resonance nearly maxed out. The bass synth part is the Multi channel in VPM mode for some FM-like goodness. The master track is set to compressor mode and set very very aggressively, but then dialed back with the wet/dry control for parallel compression fattening action.

Beat 2 is an exploration of distortion with distortion and bit-crushing on most of the tracks, and the boost Master effect providing even more grit. I've also routed the reverb and delay into the Master effect so that the can both contribute to the texture; this is why the kick sounds like an explosion. The 'windy' synth line is the Noise Multi Engine mode

Beat 3 was an experiment to see how sliced beats might be able to be handled. Obviously the slices had to be prepared outside of the Drumlogue, but once that was done, importing them and sequencing the slices using motion sequencing on the sample tracks was easy enough. I'm using two sample tracks here - one set up just to handle kicks and the other set up polymetrically with lots of probability to handle everything else. The two sample tracks are set up as a choke group so that the kick samples always cuts into whatever the other one it doing. The Master effect is set up to do big pumping compression, side-chained to the kick (which is bypassing the compressor). The acidic bassline is the Nano user oscillator type on the Multi channel.

Transparency Notice: Korg kindly provided me with the Drumlogue for the purposes of making video content with it, but they have had no editorial oversight on this video's content, nor have they requested any.

Arturia Minibrute 2S - One Box Techno Jam

Published on Mar 23, 2019 Oscillator Sink

"I was recording some tutorial videos for the Arturia Minibrute 2S today (and they're coming soon!), but while I was experimenting with ideas for a tutorial things got... a little out of hand!

This jam is one take, all sounds coming from the Minibrute 2S going through a Digitech Polara reverb. As you can see - the patching is fairly extensive and I'm making use of some of the extra modes on tracks 3 and 4 of the sequencer, but it turned out to be a great patch to make some live, improvised techno with!

Anyone who follows the channel knows that I'm a big fan of "one-box" challenges - well the Minibrute 2S passes with flying colours! I'll come back to trying to patch up something similar another time.

If you're interested in how the patch is set up - let me know in the comments and I'll see if I can squeeze a video in before I tear the patch down.

Transparency Notice: The MicroBrute 2S was kindly provided to me by Arturia."

Arturia Minibrute 2S - One Box Techno Jam - Patch Walk-Through

Published on Mar 27, 2019 Oscillator Sink

"A few days ago I posted a one-box jam on the Arturia Minibrute 2S which combined, drums, bass and drones in one patch. I asked if people wanted a walk-through of the patch - they did, so here we are!

In this video we look at making the drum sounds, how we can route them so that we're not beholden to the main amp for envelopes and take a look at two of the alternative uses for sequencer tracks 3 and 4."

New FREE Korg Minilogue Patch Packs! "Lo-Fi Textures" & "Twopointohone"

Published on Oct 3, 2019 Oscillator Sink

"Details on the patch pack can be found on Korg's website: https://www.korg.com/us/products/synt...

The Minilogue can be a lot of things, but when I first laid hands on it I was immediately drawn to the sounds I was finding that were a little less than pristine. Sounds that were a little dirty, a little dark, sometimes crunchy, noisy or wobbly - but the character of the synth always shone through and made me feel warm and fuzzy as I explored them. I decided to lean into this idea and seek out sounds where it was the imperfections that gave them their appeal; that’s where the Lo-Fi Textures Patch Pack comes from.

These 50 new patches draw inspiration from the wow and flutter of an old reel-to-reel, worn-out VHSes, the spaces between radio stations and circuits operating beyond their original purposes: unstable, fragile, nostalgic and warm."

Elektron Digitakt: Monster Mono-synth?!

Published on Mar 9, 2019 Oscillator Sink

"The Elektron Digitakt is a wonderful sampler, sequencer, groovebox... thing! But what if I told you that it's also a monster mono-synth? The rantings of a mad-man? Well maybe! But when you consider that each of its eight sampler tracks can be set up to act as a highly configurable oscillator by looping short, single-cycle wave-forms, the prospect of an 8 oscillator mono-synth starts to sound somewhat appealing!

In this video I take a look at setting up the Digitakt to act like a mono-synth and walk through building an 8-oscillator mono-synth patch from scratch."

de la Mancha basic65

"basic 65 is a monophonic synth, inspired by the classic 80s home computer, the Commodore 64 and its legendary SID chip. Building on the waveforms and signal path of this famous chip, basic 65 adds further features and options to take things a step further.

The double arpeggiator allows complex versions of that retro 8-bit game sound and the modulation options inspire experimentation via the mod envelope and 2 comprehensive LFOs. Pulse width modulation, ring modulation and oscillator detune/sync are key ingredients in the signature sound. Throw in some pitch drift, bit drift, a sprinkle of dirt and randomisation and you have a wide range of lofi, chiptune, retro-tastic sounds at your disposal.

This version is the update to the popular basic 64, redesigned from scratch, with many improvements, new features and all new presets. basic 65 was co-developed with sink, who also made the amazing presets.

features

• Monophonic synth in VST format for Windows based hosts
• 3 oscillators with pulse, saw, triangle and noise waveforms
• Pulse width can be modulated by envelope or both LFOs [NEW - pwm modulated by envelope]
• Each oscillator can be sync’d to another and/or ring modulated by another
• Each oscillator has its own ADSR envelope and can be routed to filter individually
• Resonant filter with low pass, high pass, band pass and notch modes [NEW - notch mode added]
• 2 tempo-sync Arpeggiators in series for complex arp sounds [NEW - 2nd arp, added arp patterns]
• Arp tempo, range and note length can be adjusted [NEW - more tempo-sync options, note length knob]
• Modulation envelope can control pulse width and pitch of individual oscillators as well as filter and dirt [NEW - modulates pwm, cut-off, res, dirt]
• 2 tempo-sync LFOs with wide range of waveforms, including random [NEW - more waveforms, more tempo-sync options, added phase]
• Both LFOs can control pulse width and pitch of individual oscillators [NEW - individual oscillator pitch and pwm]
• One LFO also controls filter and dirt, the other can modulate the depth and speed of the first LFO [NEW - modulates res, dirt and LFO1]
• Envelopes are non-linear and can be retriggered from zero or smoothed on each new note [NEW - separate smooth for amp and mod envelopes]
• Pitch drift models instability with variable depth and frequency [NEW - depth and frequency added]
• Options for 4, 6, 8, 12 or 16 bit audio with randomising feature [NEW - added randomising, added 4 bit and 12 bit]
• Developed with SE 1.1, so no problems with multiple instances [NEW]
• 128 presets by sink covering arps, leads, bass, drums and lofi sounds [NEW - all new presets]
• basic 64 is also included in the download"

How To Kick (a discussion of kick drum synthesis)

Published on Dec 23, 2019 Oscillator Sink

"Welcome to the first video in a series where we'll be talking about drum and percussion synthesis. Throughout the series the Volca Drum will be used for the examples, but the ideas discussed will happily translate to many other synths.

We're kicking things off (ha ha) with kick drums - the centre-piece of beat based electronic music. Starting with the classic 'all-in-one-oscillator' approach, we'll expand on that to look at how having separate voices for the 'thwack' and 'boom' can really help you tailor your sound."
