BONUS PATCH - Using Neo Trinity as a Drum Machine?!

video upload by Oscillator Sink

Follow-up to Bastl Introduces Neo Trinity - 6-Channel Compact Modulation Hub

"Here's a little bonus patch that I couldn't fit into my main video on the Neo Trinity, but I thought was worth sharing. This is a drum machine made out of Neo Trinity and 2 VCAs. The sequencing and all the sounds are being generated by Neo Trinity. The sounds are made by "abusing" LFO channels to run at audio-rate, so this is somewhat of an extension of the self-playing patch I showed in my main video.

Bastl Introduces Neo Trinity - 6-Channel Compact Modulation Hub

video uploads by Bastl Instruments

"Neo Trinity is a 6-channel compact modulation hub with great musical complexity achievable with simple gestures. Each of the 6 channels can be either LFO, envelope generator, or a CV knob recorder, while their main parameter can be automated with the REC button.

Each channel also features a recordable trigger generator with an algorithmic fill feature to get the inspiration started or to make things polymetric and keep your patches ever-changing. Use the SHIFT button to change modulation shapes and sync selected or all channels to an internal or external clock.

Neo Trinity has been designed with performance in mind, so it includes channel mutes and allows storing whole presets as banks.

While the core mechanics of the module are very straightforward, the inclusion of assignable CV inputs exponentially increases the complexity of the module’s behavior. Control some or all channels in different ways with the META IN and utilize channels’ E and F dedicated inputs. The inputs can control the main parameter in a positive or inverted way, control the output amplitude, and act as an external trigger or a trigger for the internal Sample & Hold function. The CV knob recorder mode also acts as a quantizer, and when combined with the CV inputs, it turns into a handy voltage processor."

Bastl Neo Trinity - A Modulation Mastermind?

video upload by Oscillator Sink

"Neo Trinity from Bastl is a module for generating control Voltage - which is the most generic description of a module I've ever made, but that's because it's a very flexible module which makes it hard to describe in a single sentence. It caters to your envelope, LFO, offset generation needs, but that's mixed in with a very “jammable” approach to sequencing and automation, that welcomes rapid iteration on a performance.

In this video my plan is to introduce Neo Trinity to you from an architectural standpoint, then try to give you a feel for its workflow by building up a patch through a few layers of complexity, while mixing in a few extra examples of patches I've been playing with as I've been exploring it.

Timber - Exploring Bastl's Most Underrated Module

video upload by Oscillator Sink

"Timber is a dual waveshaping module combining clipping and wave-folding circuits in a typically "Bastl Way" which combines some novel routing with utility that you wouldn't necessarily expect to find in a module of this type. It is also, in my opinion, Bastl's most underrated module as its ability to transform and animate a signal is huge considering its small size.

This video hopefully serves as half-video manual, half-sonic exploration of this module.

Bastl Basil Delay Module - Video Manual and Patch Examples

video upload by Oscillator Sink

"Basil, from Bastl, is a stereo time-based effect module that runs on their Pizza platform (if you own a Pizza you can turn it into Basil via a firmware update).

It is, capable of traditional delay and echo sounds as you might expect, but through its wide ranging controls, CV, and a selection of parameters which modify the behavior of the two delay lines you can find chorus, flanging, comb filtering, pseudo reverbs, lo-fi effects and more - and all in stereo.

In this video I've aimed for the first part to act as a kind of video manual going over each of the features in turn. That's followed by a number of example patches which can hopefully show the module in context, showing some of its versatility.

Basil is a module with a lot of hidden depth, so this video is, predictably, pretty long. To help you navigate to the material you're interested in, I've added extensive chapter markers so feel free to jump around to find the info and sounds you're after.

Playing the Waldorf Q - Carlo Mezzanotte

video upload by carlomezz

"I have owned the Waldorf Q for a while, but only in recent times I have had the opportunity to really sink my teeth into its very powerful synthesis architecture.

The first batch of patches that I have programmed includes several well-known synth timbres, plus a few more adventurous sounds. I find this an excellent approach to familiarize with an instrument. I didn't try to directly imitate the warmth of analog vintage synths; the Q has a strong personality in itself, and a big, aggressive basic sound. All the mod routings allow for very complex timbres of a special kind, cold and precise, but also full and satisfying.

What you hear in this video is all single patches, no multis. Only the internal effects were used, with no external processing except a little bit of eq."

Playing the Waldorf Q - Carlo Mezzanotte (Part 2)

"Here's the second part of my Waldorf Q programming adventures, where I try my hands at more complex sounds, plus a short multitracked improvisation at the end. With FM, ring mod, wavetables, oscillator sync, four multi-stage envelopes, comb filters, and plenty of modulation options - there's a lot of ground to explore. In particular, I like to ride the fine line between tonal and non-tonal timbres, where the sidebands build up in a dynamic way, creating groups of partials which can grow until they 'almost' become noise, but always keeping the original root clear. (well - almost always. : - ) ) Very often, I have programmed aftertouch and the mod wheel to change important details of the harmonic spectrum.

For some reason, several of these sounds ended up with a strong ambient/hypnotic connotation... I guess it's just an inclination that I have. : - )

Again, what you hear in this video is all single patches, no multis. And again, only the internal effects were used, with no external processing except a little bit of eq.

At 15:52, I did a brief improvisation using some of these sounds, plus a couple from Part 1. I used 4 stereo tracks, without adding any external effects.
I had some fun with video editing, but I'm a total amateur at that.... the moral: better to focus on the sounds! : - )"

Melatonin Sine Machine Additive Synthesizer w/ Hundreds of Oscillators

video uploads by Melatonin

via Melatonin

"Sine Machine is a new kind of additive synth

Sine Machine’s engine delivers an order of magnitude more oscillators than is reasonable for any synthesizer to have.

Hundreds of dots light up as you play. Each dot is an active oscillator. But don’t worry, they’ll only sip CPU…

Want the odd harmonics to fade out faster? Want to delay the upper harmonics? You can sculpt your dream sound with the envelope editor and visualize each change you make to your sound.

Be a control freak

Want to set the release time for Harmonic 14 to exactly 2.9 seconds?

You can do that. Each harmonic has its own amplitude envelope (DADSHR).

Play it by ear

Sometimes you just want to play. Thousands of knobs can be daunting…. especially when half of them don’t seem to change the sound at all!

Sine Machine lets you see and hear every change. There’s no need to remember where the One Knob That Actually Does Something is hiding (currently, there are no knobs at all).

Rooted in psychoacoustics

From the default 1/f amplitude profile of the volume bars to morphing exponential curves of envelopes — each parameter is custom ranged and tuned to help you make beautiful sounds for other humans.

Built from first principles
This is not a kitchen sink collection of off-the-shelf dsp building blocks.

Effects aren’t the same-old audio effects slapped on top. They are an intimate part of the synthesis engine itself. This gives you access to brand new sonic frontiers and per-harmonic effects never before possible.

Just a Microsecond

Sine Machine’s performance tolerances are measured in μs.

The engine is backed by hundreds of automated tests running across dozens of sample rates on MacOS, Windows and Linux.

Cleanest oscillators in town

Digital wavetable and FM synths work hard to filter and hack around noisy aliasing. Sine Machine is in full control of each and every harmonic, so it’s trivial to never produce a frequency over Nyquist."

Drumlogue - My First 3 Beats
video upload by Oscillator Sink

"Here are my first 3 beats made with the Drumlogue. Any saturation or compression you hear is coming from the Drumlogue itself - the only processing applied in post is some very gentle shelving EQ on the master bus and a master limiter to bring up the overall volume (which is hardly doing any work, just catching the occasional volume spike.

Beat 1 is probably the most conventional of the 3 beats, using most of the tracks "normally" - of interest though is the "bell/piano" riff which plays at the start (and through much of the track) which is actually the High Tom analogue track, essentially "pinging" the filter with the resonance nearly maxed out. The bass synth part is the Multi channel in VPM mode for some FM-like goodness. The master track is set to compressor mode and set very very aggressively, but then dialed back with the wet/dry control for parallel compression fattening action.

Beat 2 is an exploration of distortion with distortion and bit-crushing on most of the tracks, and the boost Master effect providing even more grit. I've also routed the reverb and delay into the Master effect so that the can both contribute to the texture; this is why the kick sounds like an explosion. The 'windy' synth line is the Noise Multi Engine mode

Beat 3 was an experiment to see how sliced beats might be able to be handled. Obviously the slices had to be prepared outside of the Drumlogue, but once that was done, importing them and sequencing the slices using motion sequencing on the sample tracks was easy enough. I'm using two sample tracks here - one set up just to handle kicks and the other set up polymetrically with lots of probability to handle everything else. The two sample tracks are set up as a choke group so that the kick samples always cuts into whatever the other one it doing. The Master effect is set up to do big pumping compression, side-chained to the kick (which is bypassing the compressor). The acidic bassline is the Nano user oscillator type on the Multi channel.

It is possible to play, sequence or arpeggiate complex chords with up to 6 voices in order to bring a unique flavor to your music production. No more running out of voices when sequencing melody, harmony and bass all in one device! Moreover, the new volca fm is now velocity sensitive via MIDI, when coupled with its 6-voice polyphony, provides a much more expressive and nuanced playing experience than ever before.

By popular request, volca fm includes a lush Reverb effect in addition to the Chorus effect. Each of these two effects can be used and adjusted individually to add the finishing touch to any FM sound you are going for.

In addition to MIDI IN the new volca fm also includes a MIDI OUT (IN/OUT 3.5 mm TRS), making it possible to use the intuitive volca internal sequencer to control other devices through MIDI, making it the perfect addition to your standalone setup. Of course, it also works well with your DAW of choice thanks to note, control, and clock receipt via the MIDI IN.

volca fm also incorporates a motion sequence function to record in real time all the subtle nuances of your playing and knob movements, letting you add time-varying change to the sound. This is a great way to polish your loops, and also lets you generate highly original live performances."

Synthmata online editor

"In collaboration with Oscillator Sink, old and new volca fm users can use the completely free online editor to easily modify their patches; no installation required.

Synthmata includes an 'intelligent randomizer' which allows you to describe the type of sound you want using 11 sound-quality sliders, Synthmata can then generate infinite patches to help spark your creativity."

Korg Volca FM2: A Tiny, Powerful Existential Crisis
video upload by Red Means Recording

"Korg has released an update to the Volca FM, this time with more polyphony, a reverb, and other quality of life enhancements. It still made me feel weird. This video explains why. To be fair: I think this is a really cool synth. FM is a great and expressive synthesis method, and 6-OP FM is really capable. I just wish some things had been done differently."

Korg opsix Version 2.0 - Operator Modes in Depth: Effect Operator

video upload by Oscillator Sink

"Korg have just dropped version 2.0 firmware for the opsix. The headline feature is surely the addition of the new "Effect" operator mode which allows you convert an operator into a one of ten different fx units within your patch - and it's fantastic.

In this video I take a look at each of the ten different effects, explain how they operate and make some suggestions for creative uses.

ADDAC604 - Dual Filter - a little stereo filter that likes a little filth!

Oscillator Sink

"I bought the ADDAC604 Dual Filter module pretty much on a hunch - it fit the form factor and feature set that I was after but I struggled to find a demo so I had to just "trust" that I'd like it based on other filters in the ADDAC range.

So this video is the demo that I would have wanted to find before I made the purchase - hopefully it'll help you out if you're looking to pick up a stereo filter module some time soon!

Timings:
00:00 - Intro
00:38 - Features
03:20 - Mono Filter Sweeps
07:25 - Driving the Filter
10:14 - Mono to Stereo Upmixing with Filter Offsets

14:05 - Stereo Filtering
20:28 - Can We Track V/Oct?
21:46 - Pinging The Filter
24:11 - Parallel Bandpass Vocal Sounds
26:05 - Spectral Panning with a Single Channel
27:23 - Series Routing for Different Flavours
29:06 - Audio-rate Madness (pseudo-FM and percussion sounds)
32:11 - Final Thoughts"

"While developing our ADDAC105 4 Voice Cluster module we made a new multimode filter to place after the summing mix stage. We were so pleased with it’s sound that decided to release it as a dedicated filter.

To make it more interesting we duplicated its circuitry to be able to use it in a stereo signal path.

To make it more versatile we added a switch to set the working mode from Stereo to Dual Mono where both filters can be used independently.

In Stereo Mode the Left Cutoff is used to control the Right Cutoff.

In this case the Right Cutoff Knob and CV Input are simply bypassed and will have no impact on the Right Channel operation.

This allows immediate sync of both filter frequencies when the Stereo position is engaged.

Optionally there’s a jumper in it’s back that, when placed, connects the Right Controls back to the Right CV control allowing the possibility to control the offset of the Right Channel Cutoff.

Resonance is independent on both Modes and still has to be set manually to match both channels.

Both the Audio and CV inputs are normalled from the Left into the Right channels.
As standard plugging any input to the Right channels removes this connection.

This module will also be available as a full DIY kit.

8-Bit ARP Odyssey?? An exploration of the Soulsby Odytron

Oscillator Sink

"The Soulsby Atmegatron is a synth I have woefully neglected as of late, so in an attempt to reignite my enjoyment of this little 8-bit friend, I flashed it with an alternative firmware transforming it into the Odytron.

The Odytron is a true 8-bit emulation of the iconic ARP Odyssey... which sounds like an idea that bridges madness and genius! In this video we take a relaxed sonic stroll through the synth's features and go on to build a few patches to see if it captures the soul of its analogue inspiration within its 8-bit digital heart!

Here are the songs I mentioned in the intro:"
