Moog DFAM Analog Percussion Synth 28 Min Techno Session w/Modular FX & Samples

Published on May 6, 2018 mylarmelodies

"I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: I think the Moog DFAM is one of the most interesting analogue products to come out in years, from any company - you could play a (seriously nuts) show with only a DFAM, some delay, and a few samples - so having just got my very own one yesterday, the first thing I wanted to try was that. This was the result!

In this video I have clocked DFAM to the modular, and what you're hearing is:

1. Predominantly DFAM with added clocked stereo pingpong delay from Intellijel Rainmaker, and reverb from the Make Noise Erbe Verb (DFAM is on the channel marked '808' on the desk)
2. Plus occasional additional percussion from Tiptop Audio's One sampler (x2) plus the Noise Engineering Basimilus Iteritas Alter and the ALM Akemie's Taiko. These are being sequenced by the modular via the Euclidean Circles module by VPME and the Abstract Data Event Boss.

So yes, as you hear...the DFAM is insane. Imagine it through a big system. Steve Dunnington @ Moog found a hell of a patch. I can not recommend it enough."

Tales From The Rack no.5 - Eurorack Performance.

Published on Feb 27, 2018 Richard Lacy

"Hello. Another tale from the Eurorack and a piece which started out as a ‘reel’ for the Make Noise Morphagene, recorded beforehand with the PPG Wave 2.2.

Perhaps the notable thing about this piece, is that even though it’s a big patch, most of the modules aren’t even breaking a sweat. They’re just doing simple jobs. There are some definite Floydian tendencies here; influences come to the surface sometimes….

As ever, it’s one pass and no overdubs (see the end of the Patch Notes for mixing info).

I’ve tried to make this one a bit more interesting visually (still using an iPhone5 with a shattered screen and it always drifts out of sync with the audio, which is infuriating!). It can be difficult to see what modules are in the system from the main wide shot, so I thought I’d add some close ups. Also, I have no idea how to edit video, so it’s time to learn.

Thanks for listening. If you like what I’m doing, please like and subscribe. Your support is most welcome!

Patch Notes:
Doepfer MAQ 16/3 is the clock source.
Clock to 4MS rotating Clock Divider and Frequency Central Pocket Calculator and some multiples.

1. PPG Wave sampled into Morphagene. Played by a clock divider. Metropolis pitch CV is modulating the slide control. Output to AQA Dual State Variable Filter, then to the TipTop Z-DSP (Halls Of Valhalla).

2. Gate output of the Metropolis is playing the Atlantis (main bass). Pitch CV comes from the Stepper Acid, running on a very slow clock. There’s a Switched Multiple in the pitch CV path, meaning I can choose a static bass note, or kick in the full chord progression.

3. The Stepper Acid is also playing the chords. The post Switched Multiple pitch CV is going to a few places:
Shapeshifter in chord mode: Cello 1. Shape modulated by an LFO.
Three Doepfer VCOs are tuned to the rest of a chord, the third requiring an offset generator.
All signals go to a Ladik mixer, then to an Analogue Solutions Telemark Filter. The filtered signal finally ends up in the Rainmaker, giving a bit of space.

4. Plonk. This is the guitar-type sound. Fixed note and the gate comes from the 4MS RCD on the div-3 output. Plonk output goes to the 4MS DLD.

5. Something I’ve done before, but I like it… 4MS Spectral Multiband Resonator. Bands tuned and locked. Band levels controlled by six Analogue Solutions AR Envelope Generators. The EGs are triggered from the outputs of of the A-149 Stored random Voltages.

6. Bass drum. Braids triggered by an Analogue Solutions SQ8.

7. Snare drum. Braids triggered by a Doepfer clock sequencer.

8. Hats. Doepfer white noise into a Telemark Filter. Doepfer ADSR and VCA doing the rest, triggered by the Turing Machine.

9. Perc. TipTop One triggered by the Turing Machine. The Turing Machine was locked throughout. I meant to alter the pattern partway through the track, but I forgot! All drum reverbs come from Pro Tools.

10. I still haven’t fallen out of love with Rings and Clouds in their most basic forms yet, so here they are doing their thing. Was determined not to use them, but I patched them in and they sounded ace. Doepfer Dark Time Sequencer is providing the notes and gates. Rings Position is being modulated by Tides, quite heavily towards the end. Rings is just repeating a four note sequence; it’s Clouds doing the time shifting and blurring.

11. The big filthy sound: pitch is coming from two Analogue Solutions SQ8 sequencers. Un-quantised, for more varied harmonics and going Evian a Doepfer Slew Limiter. There were only two Doepfer VCOs left by this point, so that’s what we’re using. Tuned in octaves, the square wave of one goes into the A-113 Subharmonic Generator, giving lower octaves and another intervals.
All these signals are mixed together, the intervals being a bit quieter, but their harmonic content is used in what comes next. It’s a lot of filtering!
First up is the AM Snowfall Filter, not taking much off the top, but there’s a thickness to the sound. Second is the Eowave Fluctuations Magnetiques. All four filters in use, with each one tuned to a different resonance, waiting to be ‘peaked’ by the changing notes. Third is the Dave Smith Character; this is where the big distortion is coming from. Lastly everything goes through an Analogue Solutions SY-03 for overall tone control.
By this stage, I’ve run out of reverbs and delays, so this is getting delay and reverb from Pro Tools.

12. Maths. Used as two envelope generators. These envelopes are fed into the ‘initial gain’ input of two Korg MS10s.
The first has fixed pitch, playing a high 7th. The second is playing root, sharp 5 and 7th. Notes from an SQ-8.
You can hear these gently fading in and out in a rather Floydian manner. External reverb and delay.

13. Korg MS20 has a sample and hold on the gate and is playing a low root note, used at both ends of the piece.

Nearly everything goes via a Mackie mixer (under the camera). I’m using this to bring parts in and out. From there, it goes to Pro Tools."

Intellijel Morgasmatron: Unfiltered Possibilities (Filter Demo With No Talking)

Published on Feb 8, 2018 intellijel

Chapter Markers:
00:00 - Intro
00:32 - Shapeshifter Chords
02:52 - Dixie II+ Pulse Wave Riff
03:44 - Formant Filtering
04:37 - Drum Synthesis
06:08 - Dual Oscillators
08:00 - Wet/Dry Tone Blending
08:44 - Tone Shaping In Series
09:18 - Ring Modulation
09:45 - Drones

"This is the third generation of Intellijel’s much loved Korgasmatron filter designed in collaboration with David G. Dixon.

The Morgasmatron features two completely independent six-mode filters (labeled “A” and “B”) — each with its own mode-select knob, input, output, cutoff, resonance, Q-drive and gain control. Each filter has a pair of CV inputs (one with a built-in attenuator and the other with a built-in attenuverter) for modulating cutoff, and another CV input for modulating resonance. Both filters self-oscillate at maximum Q, and produce pitched sine waves that track the two separate 1V/OCT inputs.

You can use the two filters independently of one another, or you can use them together (in either a series or parallel connection) and smoothly crossfade between them using either the XFADE knob or the XFADE CV input and built-in attenuverter. You can flip the DRY switches to instantly bypass either or both filters; invert the phase of Filter B; or overdrive Filter A by switching on the new Overdrive circuit. A MIX output provides (as you might suspect) a mixed output of the two filters.

Intellijel NAMM2018 showcase

Published on Jan 25, 2018 intellijel

Playlist:

1. Planar II - Synced CV Recording
The intellijel Planar II is synced to the Metropolis and has X and Y CV outputs patched to the Intellijel / Cylonix Rainmaker and the Rubicon II. As the loop plays, different gestures are recorded and played back via the Planar's recording interface. You can probably imagine how fun this is to play with!

Note: this is a prototype unit and the production version will look a bit different.

2. Morgasmatron acid riffing
Metropolis is sequencing the Rubicon II to create the riff and the Morgasmatron is filtering it with both filters in parallel. I crossfade from filter B in lowpass (LP) mode to filter A in bandpass (BP) before engaging the distortion switch and playing with some other settings.

3. Morgasmatron growling drones
A static pulse wave from the Rubicon II is filtered by the Intellijel Morgasmatron. The resonance, distortion, crossfading and some FM are all manipulated to explore some interesting and very analog sounding textures.

4. Rubicon II TZFM sweeps
The Intell Rubicon II Through Zero Frequency Modulation (TZFM) input is modulated by an Intellijel Dixie II sine wave. The modulator frequency is swept and the index (fm depth) is also manipulated.

5. Rubicon II sub warp
The Intellijel Rubicon II WARP circuit is explored. With nothing patched into the X input the WARP circuit combines the SUB and Tri-State pulse circuit to get a warped waveform. By changing the sub type, tsp type, pulse width or warp position you can manipulate and animate the timbre for extremely rich and fat sounding tones.

6. Rubicon II: Warping Sine
The sine wave from the Intellijel Rubicon II is patched into the X input of the WARP circuit. With the WARP control in center position (and squish circuit off) the sine wave is unchanged. Turning the WARP control up or down mutates the sine wave as does playing with the pulse width. Engaging the SQUISH circuit further enhances the timbre for interesting variations.

Arcology | Ambient Eurorack Modular Synthesizer

"✶ PERFORMANCE NOTES ✶

Arcology
October 31, 2017
Arcosanti, AZ

I had the fortune of visiting Arcosanti for a few days and meeting some wonderful souls while learning about architect Paolo Soleri's vision of the city as an organism for the transformation of the individual and evolution of the species. It's an inspiring place, and while there, I took the opportunity to create a mandala piece (https://youtu.be/rFeHbZPXUd4) and this modular piece shot on top of The Vaults at sunset.

Learn more about Arcosanti → http://arcosanti.org

✶ PATCH NOTES ✶

Live performance multitracked on Zoom F8 and mixed in Logic with compression, eq, and effects.

This patch is my current performance patch, sans effects. After completing the mandala piece I had less than an hour before sunset and the light was already fading. So I packed up, grabbed my synth and camera gear and headed to the highest point at Arcosanti—the roof of The Vaults. To save time I decided to go Eurorack-only, no external effects. Compositionally, I had zero prep. I just turned the system on, quickly tuned, and went for it.

Voices:

1. STOs → Opto → Belgrad → Rainmaker → F8 Ch 1-2
2. Rings → T-Wrex → Sisters → Clouds → Morphagene → F8 Ch 3-4"

Eurorack Improv no 4 Gently does it. Ambient polyrhythms

Published on Nov 9, 2017 Richard Lacy

"More ambient stuff from the rack...
One pass and no overdubs. Patch notes below.

Doepfer Dark Time Seq is the master. Clock is being sent to various sequencers and the 4MS RCD, which in turn is running other sequencers in different timings.

1. The soft-sounding patterns from the outset are similar to thing I did on an earlier video: A149-1 RCV and A149-2 are randomly (clocked random) firing six AS AD envelope generators. These are controlling the levels of the six bands of the 4MS SMR. The bands are from multiple scales and are locked. Audio out goes via the Dave Smith Character for some extra fatty crust. Using the EGs allows me to hold some notes and not others, creating patterns or pads depending on the settings.
2. Bass: AS SQ8 sequencer into the Atlantis pitch CV. The gate comes from the div3 output of the 4MS RCD, so the notes are changing independently of the gates.
3. The Rings sound: Metropolis into Rings pitch CV. TipTop One is playing a metallic sound every four beats. this audio goes into the input of Rings. Rings audio out goes to Clouds for a bit of reverb and delay. Then it goes through the AQA Dual SVS for filtering.
4. Shapeshifter open fifth pattern: We're in chord mode with a bit of modulation, making for a choppy, guitar sort of sound. Audio goes to the Rainmaker for delay.
5. Synth arpeggio: Stepper Acid into two A110-1 Oscs. Filtered through an AS Telemark filter with an envelope on the cut off. Output goes to the 4MS DLD, then to the Z-DSP for a big reverb.
6. Snare Drum: Braids into an AS Telemark filter.
7. Bass Drum: it's an Electribe, just out of shot, under the camera. It can take a gate input for clock, so happy days; I can alter the bass drum pattern easily.
8. Korg MS20: out of shot, playing one note with lots of filter and volume modulation.
9. Korg MS10: out of shot, playing two notes from an AS SQ8

My previous videos were recorded straight to stereo, but this one went multitrack into ProTools. Mainly so I could delay and reverb on the MS parts! No overdubs though.
Thanks for watching! Please like and subscribe!"

Cwejman Journey

Published on Nov 7, 2017 Dudadius

"All sounds from Cwejmam. Orthogonal Devices sequencing.

Patch Notes.

This patch was inspired by Maho Cwejman asking if anyone had some ADSR-VC2 or CTG-VC videos. I didn’t want to do a demo, but I had the idea that I would do a Cwejman-centric patch and use those modules as the back-bone.

All of the sound sources are from the Cwejman family. Just supplementing with the sequencers and some modulation sources.

Drone is Monome Ansible controlling the PH8 as an oscillator in the QMMF4. 2 of the Ansible channels are modulating the QMMF’s frequencies to create a shifting chord sequence. The whole shebang goes through one side of MMF2, the and FSH-1 for effects. Malekko Varigate-8 is running the rhythmic modulation on that.

Rhythm. Kick is the CTG hitting the MMF6. Release time is modulated by the CV out of the Eloquencer, which is programming all the of the rhythm tracks.

‘Snare’ is the BLD. Hat is the RG6 going into the VCA-2P, which has it’s panning being modulated by a Batumi.

All of the percussion goes into a MX4S. One side goes to the main mixer, WMD Performance mixer, and one side goes into the side-chain input of the DP2.

Melodics.

Still wrapping my head around the Orthogonal Devices ER-101/102, but they are driving three voices.

Bass is a VCO6 into the MMF1s.

Middle and upper voices are the two sides of a VCO-2RM into a DMF2. They both go to the VCA_4MX into the input of the DP2. The percussion is side-chaining all of the melodics there.

Then they all go through the SPH2 for a little stereo fun.

I’m using Intellijel Rainmaker and Audio Damage EOS reverb for effects.

There is a slight amount of Electron Analog Heat on the whole thing. Mastered with Izotope Ozone 8, Vertigo VSM2 and Fab Filter Limiter.

Whew…."
