ESK - Drums + Mixer Jamsession

video upload by Metunar

"Jamsession with an Elektron Digitakt and a Roland CR-8000 mixed together in an analog Ibanez RM-60 Mixer.
There is also reverb from a Lexicon PCM 90 (yellow FX knob on the mixer).
Furthermore I use the monitoring send as feedback line (blue FX knob on the mixer).
With mastering.

The Ibanez RM-60 is similar in design to the Boss KM-60. The Boss has more drive in the preamp and the HiPass filter in the master section can be used better in a performance.
The Ibanez Mixer on the other side has less ground noise and a monitor send.
I like both of them. Good usable for a jamsession.

8/4/23 Electrocomp EML 200 (flutes) + Roland CR-8000 (squirrel heartbeat) on undated cassette tape

video upload by Cfpp0

"This is an excerpt from an undated and unlabeled cassette tape from 2020 or 2021. EML 200 with a short envelope into its spring reverb, plus a kick drum from the modded Roland CR-8000 we used to have. I imagine a squirrel scurrying from tree to tree along the edge of Lake Waramaug. The video cuts right when the CR-8000’s congas kick in and the recording stops making any sense."

ROLAND CR-8000 Analog Drum Machine 1981 | HD DEMO

Published on Jun 4, 2020 AnalogAudio1

"(c) 2020 by AnalogAudio1

The Roland CR-8000 is a programmable analog rhythm box. 8 memories for own patterns. Fill In, Roland DIN sync, TRIG OUT jacks and other nice features. The sound is similar to the Roland TR-808!

The CR-8000 has a great analog sound.

I played the Roland CR-8000 with a small amout of ambience from Lexicon MPX-500. In the intro I played the CR-8000 along with the MPX-500."

Roland CR-8000 Drum Machine With Zen Delay, Retroverb Lancet, Sherman Filterbank and Spice

Published on Apr 6, 2020 Perfect Circuit

"Some drum machines sound awesome by themselves—the CR-8000 included—but they often sound better when massaged, mangled, and otherwise augmented with external effects. In this video, the CR-8000 is processed through a variety of desktop effects: delays, filters, distortion, reverb, and more.

The CR-8000 is a peculiar but awesome machine in its own right: the guts of a TR-808 in a package like a preset rhythm machine from the '70s. Still programmable and performable, it provides a solid set of sounds for digging into with various types of effects.

In this video, we first test out some time-based effects, using an Erica Zen Delay and Vermona Retroverb Lancet. The Zen Delay provides flanging/comb filtering and short delay effects, turning the raw tone into something more glitchy and choppy than possible with the CR-8000 alone. We then turn to the Retroverb Lancet, which uses a spring reverb to create murky, dark sense of space and a filter for overall tone shaping.

Then, we try a variety of distortion-oriented effects. The Sherman Filterbank Compact is a filter/distortion unit excellent for creating bizarre audio-reactive effects. Here, it dynamically tracks the incoming sound to create pseudo-scratching effects, harsh synth-like tones, and absurd sound effects, great for bringing an entirely new voice to the mix. The Plankton Spice, on the other hand, combines similar dynamic modulation with a Nutube-based distortion and bit crusher to create lo-fi, aggressive bass tones and glitches, bringing the inherently tonal kick and tom sounds to the forefront and turning cymbals and hats into harsh glitches and bursts.

Check these timestamps for each effect:

50-year-old Rhythm Machine with Midi! & Joe Jackson's - Steppin' Out

Published on Dec 20, 2019

"My Roland TR-77 / Rhythm -77 is just back from surgery after it had a Unipulse midi kit installed.

Sampling Vintage Rhythm Machines [INCLUDES FREE SAMPLES]

Published on Sep 12, 2019 Alex Ball

"I love the sound of old analogue rhythm machines, but I always wanted to be able to program them like my drum machines. Without the knowledge or skill to modify them, I thought that maybe multi-sampling them would give me what I was after.

I’m over the moon with the results and I think that the Kontakt multi versions sound awesome. Hopefully you’ll have fun with them too!

Download: http://bit.ly/RhythmMachines

Bit of background: Although the earlier rhythm machines were intended to accompany lone musicians (mainly organists) and were controlled with start/stop footswitches, they do crop up in a few records.

The “Cha-Cha” preset from the TR-77 appears in Ultravox’s “Hiroshima Mon Amour” and it’s apparently the (rather processed) rhythm machine heard at the start of Squeeze’s “Take me I’m yours”. The seemingly popular “Cha-Cha” also appears at the start of Duran Duran’s “Girls on Film” albeit at a different pitch (perhaps done with tape speed).

The earlier version of the Rhythm 55B (the Rhythm 55) was also the very unit used by Joe Jackson on “Steppin’ Out”. In fact, he’s recently been bringing it out on tour with him: [below]

The Korg is a bit of a hanger on being released in 1982 given that 808s, LinnDrums and DMXs were out by then. The Roland CR-5000 and CR-8000 also snuck into the 80s, but they were really at the end of this kind of instrument that had its heyday in the late 60s and 70s.

Instruments used in this video:
Roland Rhythm 77 / TR-77 (1972)
Korg Rhythm 55B / KR-55B (1982)
Roland SH-1000 (1973)
Korg MS-20 (1978)
ARP Odyssey model 2813 (1975)
Roland Juno-6 (1982)"

Roland CR-8000 | Unboxing

Published on Dec 10, 2019 Doctor Mix

"Today I unbox the CR-8000 by Roland... in Canada!"

One of my favorite things to do when traveling in the late 90s and early 2000s was to hit pawn shops. There's just something about picking up a used synth and checking it out in the hotel room. Sound dirty.. I'd always have to go through a cleaning ritual.
