Dreadbox Abyss Videos by martinjazz78

Published on Jul 6, 2017 martinjazz78

Playlist:

1. Abyss Drone While Nyx and Erebus Randomly Sequencing
"For your maximum enjoyment, please use good headphones or ideally speakers with subwoofer(s).

Dawless synth jam with three extraordinary instruments from Greek synth-maker Dredbox Effects. Four voice analogue synth Abyss asks for most of your attention in this video. This time, however, not as polyphonic gear but in unison mode producing drone and self-oscillation type of sounds.

It starts with with 24 dB LPF cutoff closed and resonance full open. The filter is modulated by both LFOs of the Abyss. First both of them go very slowly as ramp and square waves, later LFO B goes much faster and is switched to ramp wave too. During the shooting I was also playing with the Drive (VCA) knob overdriving the sound and even getting it distorted - absolutely gorgeous and absolutely my type of thing. Towards the end Abyss on-board effects are also added to the mix. It was very interesting and inspiring to achieve self-oscillation of the Delay very similar to the self-oscillation of Roland's vintage tape Space Echo.

On the background of Abyss' drone you hear Nyx and Erebus. Both of them playing simple few notes sequence and are sequenced by Cirklon. Both sequences have also several random parameters, so they seem to never exactly repeat in the same way. Another layer of randomness was achieved by using CV inputs and outputs on both synths. Maths module from 0-Coast controlling LFO on Moog Mother 32 that was controlling VCA of Erebus added even more randomness to the Erebus sequence, and this one is very devilish, I would say.

All three synths are processed through vintage tape Roland Space Echo for delay (this time rather slower) and Strymon Big Sky for the reverb. Recorded live, stereo output from my Motu interface into Ableton Live only. Camera is GoPro, edited in Final Cut.

Will I be stoned, if I say I absolutely love these Dreadbox synths, the sound they produce and the feel they give and I have no doubts they are going to become classic like Moog, Art or Oberheim?"

2. Dreabox Abyss Slow and Heavy 4 Voice Sequence
"Exploring multichannel mode of Abyss 4 voice synth from Dreadbox Effects. Each of Abyss' voices is independently sequenced by Cirklon hardware sequencer. Additionally, I was also exploring possibilities of Abyss' multi-timbrality. Dip switch 5 is on and each voice has slightly different envelope set up.

I have to say I was so nicely surprised how heavy such 4-voice sequence on Abyss can be. Haven't expected that. Also not exaggerating if I say that otherwise I achieve so heavy sequence usually only when I put Taurus III Bass Pedals into work. In this context we should indeed mention suboscillators of Abyss.

Moog's CP-251 controls filter cutoff and phaser of Abyss. Not sure if CP-251 gives the proper voltages for Abyss, but definitely interesting things sonically speaking.

Noise and hissing on the background is Erebus by Dreadbox heavily modulated and controlled with 0-Coast by Make Noise and Moog's Mother 32. Before it goes to delay and reverb effects it is also processed quite drastically through Zvex Fuzz Factory. All these appear at the very end of the video.

Both synths are further processed through vintage tape Roland Space Echo for delay (I think the time for changing the tapes is quickly approaching as you may hear the repeats get bit out of tune) and Strymon Big Sky for mighty lush reverb.

Recorded live, stereo output from my Motu interface to Ableton Live. Camera was GoPro, edited in Final Cut. I like these late night improvised dawless synth jams."

3. Dreadbox Abyss 4 Voice Sequence and some Erebus, Moog's Mother 32 and 0-Coast too
"Each of Dreadbox Abyss' voices is sequenced in C sharp minor independently by the Cirklon hardware sequencer, Abyss is therefore in the multi-channel mode. Additionally, Dip switch 5 is on for bit of multi-timbrality when each of the voices has slightly different envelope set up. Filter cutoff and phaser are modulated and controlled by Moog's CP 251. And some tweaking on the fly (sub-oscillator level, wave form shape, drive VCA, filter modulation etc.)

Noise on the background was intended as I like when there's always something disturbing and distracting. It's Dreadbox Erebus heavily modulated and controlled by Make Noise's 0-Coast - that is also sequenced by Oberkorn sequencer - as well as Moog's Mother 32. Before it goes to delay and reverb effects it is also processed through rather psychedelic Zvex Fuzz Factor stomp-box.

Both Abyss and Erebus are further processed through vintage tape Roland Space Echo for delay and Strymon Big Sky for reverb. It was dawless synth jam, recorded in one take, stereo output from my Motu interface into Ableton Live. Camera was GoPro, video was edited in the Final Cut Pro. "

The 1982 Roland SRE 555 / RE 501 Chorus Echo with Emulator II, Jupiter 6 demo

video upload by

Synthesizer Video Service Blofeld posts

"The 1982 Chorus Echo from Roland marked the end of the Tape Echo, I find these units make you go “mmmMMM…” which, in this case, means.. magical, mysterious, mesmerising and mechanical! ..this unit provides a ghostly, dream-state-like ambience to just about anything you put into it. Sit back, relax and come on a journey back to 1982 thru to current day with the help of some sounds from the E-mu Emulator II, the Roland Jupiter 6 & the MPC X ..through this mesmerising mechanical machine.

I requested an interview with the engineer of the Chorus Echo, but he declined due to the fact he doesn’t like repeating himself 😂 🤦🏻‍♂️

Roland Jupiter 6 & RE-301 Chorus Echo

YouTube via zibbybone

"Sort of a "two in one" demo for your viewing pleasure. One of my favorite things about the Jupiter 6 is its resonant mulit-mode filter. I've got the JP-6 set up in split mode with a 2 voice unision bass sound and a 4 voice polyphonic lead/pad both using bandpass filters. This JP-6 has the Europa upgrade which adds enhanced MIDI capabilities and imroves on the built in arpeggiator. A neat feature added to the arp is a polyrhyt mode. A single note will repeat at standard tempo. As you add notes, the clock is divided for each note. Kind of hard to explain, but watch and see. I forgot to turn off the RE-301's reverb at the beginning, but I soon switch to a completely dry signal. I then add the reverb, chorus (very nice for pads) and lastly the tape echo. If you listen in stereo (might have to add "&fmt=18" without quotes to the end of the URL), the direct signal & reverb are in left channel, tape echo in right and chorus in both. You can hear some pretty extreme wow and flutter on the echo in some parts. I hope I just need a new tape and not a new motor."

ROLAND RE-201 SPACE ECHO SN 740308

via this auction
awakewalk (RSS)

See the seller's other items for SN 888825 & 835995.

"The Roland RE-201 Space Echo is truly a Vintage (1973) piece of music technology with lots of appeal even today. It's not a synth, but a Tape-Echo machine for creating true analog echo effects. The RE-201 is a simple system in which a small loop of tape records an incoming signal and immediately plays the recorded sound back over a couple playback heads before being erased over by new incoming audio. A real analog system with warm, gritty and almost noiseless operation, the Space Echo can provide warm, unpredictable and highly tweakable echo effects."

Analog Drum 'n Bass

Analog Drum 'n Bass from K X on Vimeo.

"This is my imagining of what circa '98 era minimal tech step drum 'n bass may have sounded like had it been invented before modern samplers and digital synths / fx.

All the sound is being generated live, coming straight from the main mixer in the middle, with no multitracking. Sequenced by 3 vintage hardware sequencers, the Yamaha QX-1, Roland MC-4 and Roland MC-8 locked together by tape-sync.

List of the main gear used :

Sequencers : Roland MC-8, Roland MC-4, Yamaha QX-1

Modulars : Roland System 100 (Drums), Moog series 900 (pads), Roland System 700 (Basses), Arp 2500 system, Buchla 100 series.

Other Synths : Korg MS-20, Roland System 100 standalone synth.

FX : Roland Space Echo RE-501 (tape delay, chorus, spring reverb), Roland DC-30 (analog chorus-echo), Roland Dimension-D Analog Chorus.

Mixer : Tascam M308b"

Update: some additional info:

"If you're interested, the system 100 is doing all the drums, the moog is doing the atmospheric pad chords (as heard from the very beginning), the ARP is doing the stabs which are heard from very near the beginning, the system 700 is doing both the deep sub bass growls, and also the big ominous stabs in the middle build-up section (the MS-20 is just acting as a distortion unit for those), the system 100 standalone synth is doing the reese sound (as heard in the last bar before the drop), and the Buchla is doing all the main theme sounds which you can see if you look closely at the Buchla sequencer's timing lights during the main part.
The MC-4 is sequencing the drums and the reese, the MC-8 is sequencing the Moog and 700, and the QX-1 is sequencing the Buchla and Arp.

The whole project took almost 2 weeks, but nearly half of that was spent getting all the gear set up, synced up, talking to eachother nicely etc. Each day quite a bit of time was spent re-tweaking the sounds after the synths cooled down overnight, also the MC-4 program takes about 15 minutes just to load, (30 minutes to save including verify) and on top of that, the MC-8 refused to save at all, so I had to organise it so I could do all of the MC-8 programming and recording in one day. Next time it should take less time, since now I've got the setup all figured out."

roland re-201 space echo

via this auction

"The Roland Re-201 guitar effect pedal comes with genuine tape saturation and has great fat harmonics in the lower frequency region, and thus lets you enjoy superior sound quality. It also comes with Roland Space Echo and lets you generate true analog echo effects for your guitar. The Roland Space Echo has twelve settings that allow you to adjust to a variety of tape loop speeds, number of repeats, levels, and intensities. This guitar effect pedal creates some of its own feedback loops that can be used to provide instantaneous sci-fi effects. The Roland RE-201 is well suited for the Triphop and dub genres."

Ambient Synth Jam - Moog Werkstatt, Roland JP-08, Arturia Microbrute, Roland Space Chorus RE-301

Published on Dec 20, 2015 JimBobJrJackson Earmonkey

"My wife got me lights for the studio. She's awesome! Makes this even more fun. This little jam is all played live. No sequencers. Started with just the Werkstatt playing a pulse wave. Modulate it with the Werkstatt LFO set to square to get the repeating octaves. Add some VCF modulation by routing the Microbrute LFO into the Werkstatt expansion board. Effects provided primarily by Roland Space Chorus Echo. A beautiful tape delay. Some Valhalla Shimmer and Ubermod added midway in the video just to make it even bigger. The JP-08 and Microbrute playing leads and stuff. I think I could do this all day long."

Ambient Synth Jam #2 - Moog Wertkstatt - Roland JP-08 - Microbrute - Roland Space Chorus Tape Delay

Published on Dec 23, 2015

"Live jam with no sequencers or external anything other than some reverb added in Ableton. The Werkstatt is providing the rhythmic pulse from its LFO, square wave modulating the filter envelope quite heavily. The LFO from the Brute is modulating the Werkstatt as a second LFO to get filter sweeps. The LFO out of the Werkstatt is going back in to the Brute and provides a sort of rhythmic texture when I play the lead parts on the Brute. Roland JP-08 filling in. And the whole thing running through the brilliant Roland Space Chorus tape delay. Butter."

Roland RE-200 Space Echo Spring Reverb SN 180767

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.

via this auction

"This listing is very special. It is for the rare and interesting early version of what became the popular Roland Space Echo RE-201.

This one is unique in that it has a reloadable tape cartridge called the Sony Endless Tape RE-5 that can be reloaded with standard 1/4" tape when it wears out vs. the 8 track tape the RE-201 uses.

Functionally this is being sold as-is only because I'm not the original owner and don't know much about its history. I can say that it spits out echo when fed signal and all knob settings work. So it works. The motor sounds good and was apparently overhauled by Roland according to the previous owner. Once again I can't guarantee this. It's what I was told..."

Roland SRE-555 Space Echo tape delay

via this auction

abertronix (RSS)

"Roland's professional tape delay system featuring advanced low noise circuitry and balanced in/outputs as well as stereo output. It combines four effects ; Chorus (analog circuitry similar to the roland dc 20/30) Echo (tape delay / 6 six modes ) Sound on sound (tape layering effect unique to the 501) Reverb (spring reverb tank) All effects can be used alone on mixed in any combination. In my opinion the sound is clean though the delay is still very much tape like in character. Where this equipment shines is in the ability to create and mix together very beautiful chorus/ delays/ reverbs so easily."

Wem Watkins Copicat trio

YouTube via zioguido.

KORG MS20, ARP Odyssey and Alesis Andromeda A6 make an appearance.
Synth demos at 1:41.

"These are my three Wem Copicats. One is the classic "Custom" Copicat, model IC-400, and I think it's the oldest of the three; one is the Super IC model with 4 playback heads, and the black cat is the VariSpeed model, the only Copicat with a DC motor capable of changing tape speed, and I think this is the newest. I don't know their ages or the production years precisely, but I suppose it's something between the late 60's and the early 70's. All 3 models are solid state.
I love them, I love tape and analog echo effects in general, the Roland Space Echo is my favourite, but Copicats have something special, not only in their tone.

Plus, they come from the inventor of the tape echo, Mr. Charlie Watkins.

If you can find one in good conditions, grab it with no esitation! And if you're into computer music and you just wish to have fun with one of these babies without having to buy one, try the free emulation: WatKat. You can download it here: http://www.genuinesoundware.com/?a=sh..."

4/24/24 (YLF 4, Op. 9, no. 2) Roland Jupiter 6 & RE-301 + Akai ME20A + Alesis Midiverb II

video upload by Cfpp0

"The left hand of Frédéric Chopin’s “Nocturne in E-flat major, Op. 9, no. 2” is translated into a sequence by the Akai ME20A MIDI sequence arpeggiator and played back on the Roland Jupiter 6 (cross modulation). The Jupiter 6 audio output goes into the Alesis Midiverb II, with the input overloading. Tape echo from the Roland RE-301 is applied on the Mackie Onyx 1640 mixer."

4/26/24 Chopin’s “Nocturne in E-flat major, Op. 9, no. 2” according to Akai ME20A & Roland Jupiter 6

"YLF plays the left hand of Frédéric Chopin’s 'Nocturne in E-flat major, Op. 9, no. 2' again, but this time as chords, which the Akai ME20A translates into a Bach-icized sequence. The Roland Jupiter 6 is in SOLO mode first, until it is switched to POLY-1 at 1:17, with some wiggling of filter cutoff and resonance, and the sustain and release on envelope 2, throughout the video, particularly towards the end.

Elk EM-4 Vintage Analog Tape Delay Space Echo

via this auction

via the description: "It looks similar to the first Roland RE-100 / 200 series space echos and I'm not sure which came first. It comes with the Sony RE-5 endless tape cartridge with Ampex tape that has seen very little use. Any 1/4" blank 8 track tape should work though. It runs smoothly and quitely, and sounds simply beautiful. I got the tape echo bug a long time ago and kept this, a 301 and a 555. It easily holds it's own and has a unique character I will miss."
