Modular Jam 48

Published on Mar 3, 2016 ngarjuna

"Patch Notes:

Guitar Loops
Guitars performed and recorded by the fabulous Rich Prewett before being chopped and mangled

Lead Voice
The Rene pattern starts to feedback (via Woggle CV from the Wogglebug being fed Rene's pitch output and clock) at around 4:30 or so. From there the pattern continues to bend and wind as the attenuator gets wiggled until it gets snapped back to the familiar refrain

The patch itself consists of Rene driving the STO and Rubicon which are cross modulating:
Rubicon's sine is going through the uVCA (enveloped by Intellijel ADSR) into the STO linear FM
STO's sine goes through Optomix ch 1 enveloped by Maths into the TZFM input on Rubicon (full CW so not through zero)
The cross modulated output of the STO is additionally shape modulated by SUM out from Maths (which includes some offset and some PEG) and piped into the Optomix ch 2 enveloped by other Maths with Sequencer 1's LFO providing Damping modulation

Unlike most of my patches this one has not been subjected to any post processing: no reverbs, no delays or phasers; processing only seemed to obscure the nicer details of this particular patch.

West Coast Bass Patch
STO vari out to Optomix 2 enveloped and struck by Maths. STO sine out to Timbre input. Dynamic (uVCA opened by Woggle stepped out) FM from Sputnik 2
Timbre modulated by Maths
Optomix 1 opened by Intellijel ADSR and Damp modulated by Sequencer 1
Sequencer 1 LFO modulating Maths fall (Optomix ch 2)

East Coast Bass Patch
Rubicon square out and some noise from the Quantum Rainbow put through the Post Lawsuit Filter into the AJH Minimod VCA enveloped by Minimod EG and Intellijel ADSRs with some gentle PEG'ing and Pittsburgh Oscillator LFO'ing

Robot Humming Patch
In Kaivo I ran modulating Compressor Hiss through the metal string and one of the chambers
Then that rich timbre dancing mess got put through Array where the spectral filtering was sequenced

Pluck Patches
Fairly straightforward Ngarjuna Make Noise plucks: STO FM'd by Rubicon into Optomix, add Maths and PEG
The alternating line with the more common 3 note pluck is a variation using the two Sputniks cross modulating through the Timbre and into the other Optomix channel. Quantum Rainbow provided some additional modulation

Acid cooked in Klanghelm SDRR
Drums in Spark (electronic) and Jamstix (shakers and hand percussion)

and of course my trusty Tektronix 422 scope providing the trippy light show."

Intellijel NAMM2018 showcase

Published on Jan 25, 2018 intellijel

Playlist:

1. Planar II - Synced CV Recording
The intellijel Planar II is synced to the Metropolis and has X and Y CV outputs patched to the Intellijel / Cylonix Rainmaker and the Rubicon II. As the loop plays, different gestures are recorded and played back via the Planar's recording interface. You can probably imagine how fun this is to play with!

Note: this is a prototype unit and the production version will look a bit different.

2. Morgasmatron acid riffing
Metropolis is sequencing the Rubicon II to create the riff and the Morgasmatron is filtering it with both filters in parallel. I crossfade from filter B in lowpass (LP) mode to filter A in bandpass (BP) before engaging the distortion switch and playing with some other settings.

3. Morgasmatron growling drones
A static pulse wave from the Rubicon II is filtered by the Intellijel Morgasmatron. The resonance, distortion, crossfading and some FM are all manipulated to explore some interesting and very analog sounding textures.

4. Rubicon II TZFM sweeps
The Intell Rubicon II Through Zero Frequency Modulation (TZFM) input is modulated by an Intellijel Dixie II sine wave. The modulator frequency is swept and the index (fm depth) is also manipulated.

5. Rubicon II sub warp
The Intellijel Rubicon II WARP circuit is explored. With nothing patched into the X input the WARP circuit combines the SUB and Tri-State pulse circuit to get a warped waveform. By changing the sub type, tsp type, pulse width or warp position you can manipulate and animate the timbre for extremely rich and fat sounding tones.

6. Rubicon II: Warping Sine
The sine wave from the Intellijel Rubicon II is patched into the X input of the WARP circuit. With the WARP control in center position (and squish circuit off) the sine wave is unchanged. Turning the WARP control up or down mutates the sine wave as does playing with the pulse width. Engaging the SQUISH circuit further enhances the timbre for interesting variations.

Introducing Rubicon 2 (Oscillator Demo With No Talking)

Published on May 25, 2018 Intellijel

"Here is a quick introduction to the sound and character of the Intellijel Rubicon 2 Oscillator. All of these patches show the direct output of the system, with no external effects or post processing performed.

Rubicon2 is the second generation of the classic Rubicon triangle core analog VCO, designed in collaboration with David G. Dixon.

It features nine simultaneously available waveshape outputs; two sub-oscillators; three variations of a sine wave; a new Tri-State pulse circuit; exponential Frequency Modulation (FM); linear FM; hard and soft (flip) sync; pulse width modulation; CV control of FM index; a new foldable Warp circuit; and the ability to perform perfectly-symmetrical Thru-zero FM with absolutely no change in pitch or tracking accuracy.

This is not a ‘set it and forget it’ oscillator. It’s an oscillator that demands to be tweaked, modulated and explored. It’s an oscillator that’s proudly analog and eschews all shortcuts. As such, it’s an oscillator that rewards its owner with sounds as boundless as their creative limits allow."

intellijel Rubicon 2 Panel Overview

Published on Jun 1, 2018 Intellijel

"This video provides an overview of the panel and features of the Rubicon II analog oscillator. We also provide a basic introduction to TZFM synthesis and demonstrate some examples of linear and exponential FM, oscillator sync, and our special Warp and Squish circuits. Owners of the original Rubicon will benefit from this video as many of the features are retained.

How to Build Sawtooth Shaped Wooden Side Panels for Your Synths

Jens Paldam
Published on Aug 6, 2017

"Wooden panels usually serve only one function, and that is to lend vintage class and credibility to your synthesizer, mixer, vibraphone et cetera, and maybe to be fair, they also protect the corners of your device from damage. But, I thought that it would be great to create panels, that actually had a function. The function here being holding together modular cases. Both the ones of my own cardboard design or those of my beloved Moog Mother 32’s.

SMR Melodic
2 Octocontroller loops going into L and R respectively
Octocontroller S&H controlling the ROTATE CV

I don't have patch notes or video but there are two other SMR patches: one which produces kind of a pitchless, funky bouncy kind of sound; another which is a more percussive, almost glasslike kind of sound

You can hear the more subtle modular parts when the Avalon and Motomouth and drums all drop out around 6:33

4 Operator Analog FM Synthesizer & FM Tutorial

Published on Jun 8, 2018 Perfect Circuit Audio

"We had the Intellijel Rubicon 2 through-zero oscillators in, so we decided to build a ridiculous modular frequency modulation synthesizer with four of them. They are routed through a 4MS VCA Matrix for easier routing of FM 'algorithms'. A Quadra and Make Noise Maths are used to generate envelopes and LFOs that can modulate FM amount. Since we had this synthesizer put together we decided to make a quick tutorial about how FM synthesis works.
