Soma Labs Lyra-8 Organismic Synthesizer & Volca Drum | ambient dystopian sci-fi soundscapes | #3

video upload by Nate Connelly

"Soma Laboratories Lyra 8 analogue synthesizer drone machine with Korg Volca Drum & Strymon Bigsky. Another little jam I created late last night. I'm still finding my way around this synth and attempting to control it as best I can. It's pretty wild and unruly."

"Soma Laboratories Lyra 8 analogue synthesizer drone machine with Korg Volca Drum & Strymon Bigsky. A little industrial ambient drone jam I put together. I've been trying to tame this mad machine and find my way into some practical uses for it."

Soma Labs Lyra-8 Organismic Synthesizer | live ambient industrial noise & drones exploration | #1

video upload by

"Soma Laboratories Lyra 8 analogue synthesizer drone machine & Strymon Bigsky. Here are the best parts from the first hour or so I spent with this amazing synthesizer. I tuned each of the eight oscillators to a random scale before recording in an attempt to create something semi-melodic and harmonic (rather than just noise). I felt my way around and let the Lyra lead the way.

I hadn't read the manual - just watched a few video on Youtube. I made this video to give other folk a rough idea of what they might expect the first time they play it, provided you approach this instrument with an already basic understanding of now synthesizers work.

00:00 - melodic start
01:36 - awesome harmonics
02:21 - insane phasing and squealing
03:02 - nice little chord echo sequence
04:02 - insanity
04:30 - growls & delay feedbacks
06:16 - something more melodic again
07:29 - alarm type noise
08:17 - odd drones from elsewhere"

SOMA Lab ORNAMENT-8 Organismic Sequencer

ORNAMENT-8 organismic sequencer. Demo (SOMA Lab)

Vlad Kreimer

"An experimental analog modular sequencer based on a completely new principle of synthesis of behaviour."

ORNAMENT-8 self developing composition (demo by SOMA Lab)

Vlad Kreimer

"Example of generative self-developing composition"

ORNAMENT-8 example of performance. (demo by SOMA laboratory)

via SOMA Lab

"ORNAMENT can be controlled via Eurorack-compatible Control Voltage. The output of ORNAMENT is also standard CV signals that can control LYRA-8, PULSAR-23, Eurorack systems and any equipment that can receive CV, including non-audio ones such as lighting setups or electromechanical installations. For controlling LYRA-8 we developed a special adapter for easy connection to the LYRA sensors while also preserving the ability to play it normally with your fingers.

The adapter attaches to LYRA’s surface using magnets which make installation easy and safe. ORNAMENT, as an organismic sequencer, complements LYRA’s organismic synthesis nature, making them a perfect pair.

ORNAMENT-8 is based on a completely new principle of synthesis of behaviour. Instead of a vertical structure with a tempo generator on top and some memory for storing sequenced events, we have a dynamic equilibrium inside a horizontal structure without any memory, just an infinite “now” that generates the next moment of behaviour. In certain key aspects, it resembles a neural network where there is no difference between “processor” and “memory”, where functions are blurred and all structures are very flexible. Because the ORNAMENT is fully modular, you can connect any number of ORNAMENTs into a single network, creating very complex multi-dimensional structures with the same complex behaviour. For those with philosophical inclinations, ORNAMENT is a playground the size of a box of chocolates where you can study fundamental laws of life and society, going beyond linear logical thinking.

ORNAMENT-8 was designed by Vadim Minkin, the new creative mind who recently joined SOMA laboratory. ORNAMENT is intended to be the first in a line of SOMA sequencers developing new principles of behaviour generation and control."

The Soma LYRA-8 Experience

video upload by Patchwerks

"In this video Matthew (aka @EZBOT_ ) demonstrates the Soma Lyra 8. LYRA-8 is based on eight generators, which will be referred to as voices. Their design is not like a traditional subtractive synthesis VCO. Instead of having a linear or logarithmic dependency on control voltage, they resemble the tone generators in old electric organs. Hence the use of the term “voices” instead of “VCOs”. Lyra uses non-linearity a lot, and the voices are constructed in such a way that allows for non-linearity to express itself.

LYRA-8 through MÄANDER // Filterbank Synthesizer Drone Music #TTNM

Published on Jun 2, 2020 THE TUESDAY NIGHT MACHINES

"SOMA LYRA-8 drone music processed by the FLAME MÄANDER synthesizer’s filter bank. MORE INFO BELOW :)

♥ SUPPORT: http://bit.ly/ttnm-support

Cameron Entzminger sent me an audio file of a Soma Lyra-8 performance to run through the Flame Mäander’s filter bank.

You can listen to the original Lyra-8 audio file here:
https://soundcloud.com/cambot_music/l...

In this video I first fade in the various filter bank channels. Then I morph to the filter bank’s 12-track envelope sequencer, which adds rhythm to the drone and introduces stereo panning effects. The 10 filter bands above the bass frequencies are split between the left and right channels when you plug cables into both audio output sockets.

Later on, I add sequenced white noise shots from the Mäander and additional percussion from Bram Bos’ Ruismaker iOS drum machine, turning the Lyra-8 drone into some kind of dark industrial beat music.

Vlad Kreimer. 21.03.2018"

Also see LYRA-8 as an FX processor (SOMA laboratory) (LYRA-8 with external IN only is the equivalent of LYRA8-FX)

"LYRA8-FX is an FX processor that can give you a significant part of the mysterious LYRA-8 sound.
LYRA8-FX consists of the FX section from the LYRA-8, expanded with CV controls and packed into a Eurorack module.
It contains a double modulated lo-fi delay with cross-feedback and the unique possibility of self-modulation, where the delay output signal modulates its own sample rate. Also, it packs a parallel distortion with CV control of the drive. The distortion is after the delay.
It’s much more than a delay – you can get a simple reverb, comb filter, chorus and much more cool FXs which are hard to describe.

Soma Lyra-8 ambient drone synthesizer Tutorial lesson 1: Overview

video upload by EthanJamesMusic

"This is a tutorial series for anyone who wants to learn how to use the Soma Lyra-8 to its fullest extent. The synth is simply one of the best ambient drone synthesizers and is capable of making some wonderful, beautiful, ugly, complex textures. I've tried to break things down into small videos that are easy to mentally digest and apply to your own electronic music. We will be exploring both east coast tonal and west coast avant-garde uses of the synthesizer. This first video shows an overview of the instrument and gives you a place to start. Please leave a comment with any questions or requests and a like if this was helpful."

SOMA Lyra-16: "Valkyries"

Published on May 22, 2020

Pink Lyra. They are available. See the dealers on the right.

"(Try loud with headphones for the bass) So I was talking to/caught up with a friend recently. He had a play on the Lyra (PS playing a Lyra changes a man), and after his transition to drone, he asked me a good question: "What better instrument is there for drone music than a Lyra-8?".

He challenged me on it, and rephrased the question to "I bet you can't think of a better drone synth than a Lyra-8".

I asked him what the odds were, and we agreed on a cup of coffee for the winner.

I went away and had a think about it for a good 23 minutes or so, after which it dawned on me: better than a Lyra-8 for drone music is... two Lyra-8's.

Obvious, really.

So: I win, and he owes me a coffee :)

PS the included is relatively 'mild'. You should hear it when a line out is taken from each Lyra... into each Lyra. If you've ever seen the movie 'Event Horizon', you'll know what I'm talking about i.e a direct portal to hell. I'll upload an example in the near future. It could create a black hole, but it will be worth the risk as it could help out CERN with their research. And even if we do all perish in the blackness: there's worse ways to depart. I'll see you all there.

PPS the audio/video sync is off on this one. I think it is due to my being zoomed in with the camera. But it'll do for upload purposes.

Enjoy/all best
Kris"

Soma Lyra 8 and JMT Synth LD2 Ambient Drone

video upload by riotbell

"This is a drone piece featuring the Soma Lyra 8 and the JMT Synth LD2. The Lyra is running directly into the LD2 in order to access its filter and delay.

A short phrase on the Lyra begins the piece, is looped on the Microcosm (offscreen) and then more oscillators are slowly worked in as the piece progresses, including the oscillators of the LD2.

I've been curious how these two unique drone synths would work together for some time, though I haven't been able to find an LD2 until recently. A dedicated filter does a lot to rein in some of the brighter tendencies of the Lyra 8."

Soma Lyra 8 "Discovery"

Jurgen SONICrider

"Saturday August 1 2020 "the organismic synthesizer" Soma Lyra 8" landed at the SONICriderSTUDIO.

Since recent production often touch the industrial experimental ambient style this organismic synthesizer will bring some unpredictable layers to future ambient project.

After going through some knob combinations recorded this "Discovery" video as a time stamp - this Lyra will bring a change to the sound & style for sure.

A little travelogue:
- Hold at 11 o'clock + release for each group "long".
- Switching modulation sources
- Playing with the "group" pitch setting
- Change the LFO setting
- Introducing the "mod delay"
- Altering the "sharp" setting

Although this video doesn't show expert skills it was fun to make it & show some of the Lyra 8 capabilities. This synthesizer will become a welcome travel mate - not only on musical journeys - due to his stand alone possibility.

Soma Labs Lyra 8 #4 improv | dark electronic ambient industrial soundscape | a short film nightmare

video upload by Nate Connelly

"Soma Laboratories Lyra 8 analogue synthesizer drone machine.

I created this soundscape and short film for Halloween 2021. A friend and I went for a walk around beacon fell to do some filming and sound recording a few weeks ago, but the weather was far too wet and windy to do either!

However, I managed to get a few shots of the spectacular foggy atmospheres on my Osmo action, and thought they would pair well with the otherworldy sounds of the Lyra 8... so here we are.

The samples are from some radio show about haunted woodlands I recorded late on night on my field recorder.

I hope you enjoy. Please like & subscribe for more videos.

Quarantine Sessions 2

Published on Mar 21, 2020 Ran Kirlian

"Second live jam recorded during Covid-19 quarantine in my home studio. This live performance follows a similar structure than the previous one, containing different improvised sound environments melted together with a strong presence of a minimal modular system. In this session the main synthesizers were the Soma Lyra-8 and the Nordrack 2x, both reinforced with The Amazing Noises Reverb on the iPad thru Lexicon Omega audio interface. Nordrack is played from Korg Nanokey, connected to the iPad as well and routed with Aum to the Omega interface to the synth MIDI in. Sadly not much can be seen in this video due to bad camera (or artist) position, but I hope you like the music instead.

With this live recordings I’m not only having fun while playing relaxed without my typical time limitations, but also expressing this unique experience of being confined at home, watching the news, seeing the empty streets from my windows and having a social life limited to my wife, my son and my cats beyond the electronic communications.

Tracklist:

Part 1 - 00:00
Part 2 - 07:38
Part 3 - 15:23
Part 4 - 23:29
Part 5 - 28:44

Exploring Modulation Pt. 3 - Mod Delay // Lyra-8 Organismic Drone Synth Tutorial

Published on Jan 26, 2020 Ron Cavagnaro

"Please make sure to keep your volume at a moderate level. Due to the experimental quality of this synth some parts may become noisy to some, and extremely irritable to others.

This tutorial is about how to wildly change the tones even more with the Soma Labs Lyra-8 Drone Synth, using the mod delay.

This is The Soma Labs Lyra-8 Organismic Drone Synth. It is an experimental analog synthesizer that creates cinematic, strange, beautiful, and cerebral soundscapes."
