The Synth Sounds of Stranger Things - Two Tutorials on Creating the Theme

Published on Aug 30, 2016 Reverb.com

This is a bit of a double post. In the video above Reverb.com goes over how to create the theme to Stranger Things using hardware synths. If you click here, you'll get a write-up from Ask.Audio on how to create the track on U-he's Diva. The completed track there is impressive.

BTW, If you have Netflix and haven't seen Stranger Things yet, go watch it. If you don't have Netflix, Stranger Things just might be worth picking it up for a month. It is that good and so is the theme music. It's throwback to soundtracks of the 70s and early 80s, most notably John Carpenter.

The following is the description for the video by Reverb above.

"Netflix's 'Stranger Things' has seemingly taken over popular culture, in no small part thanks to it's moody, synthesized soundtrack by Kyle Dixon and Michael Stein. In this video, Justin DeLay attempts to take us in to the Analog Upside-Down and show you how to approximate some of these fantastic sounds on analog synthesizers of the day.

Published on Oct 26, 2017 Clara Venice

♡ Hello bbz! So this is my Halloween viddy for 2017 - it's my take on the "Stranger Things" opening title theme.

"Stranger Things" is one of my fav shows, and of course I love the soundtrack so much - which is why I had the idea for composing a theremin accompaniment.

The original "Stranger Things" theme is by Kyle Dixon and Michael Stein.

Hope you enjoy the video, and until next time - stay strange.

Love, Clara xx

Korg Minilogue - "Stranger Things" & More

Published on Jul 20, 2016 Jae Ryan

1. Korg Minilogue - "Stranger Things"

"I was a little slow obtaining a Minilogue since I live in Canada. I happened to get mine last weekend while binge watching Stranger Things on Netflix. Although this is not what the synth is known for (based on what I've seen), I figured I would take a shot at making something that wouldn't be out of place on a scene in the show. This whole sequence is just one track of the Minilogues audio out. No overdubs. No second synth. No layers, just 1 pure audio track of Minilogue madness. As usual I recorded this to the UAD Studer tape plug in and added some delay and Lexicon 224 reverb for width and depth.

I also own the Korg Arp Odyssey and MS-20 Mini and I must say that at some points this synth can sound very similar to those, even in how difficult it can be to find the sweet spot. When you open this thing up though, it has a sound that's all its own. Personally i'm not a huge fan of poly synths but ANY analog at this price is worth owning. The Minilogue has a very unique character, love it or hate it, you'll be hard pressed to find the sound anywhere else."

Stranger Things theme - Sequential Prophet Rev2

video upload by Laurence Owen

"I recreated the Stranger Things theme tune using only one synth, the Sequential Prophet Rev2.
Trying to design these sounds as close as possible to the original was a really fun challenge, and a great way to get to know this powerful little machine!

If you like this sort of thing, you'll probably enjoy my fiction podcast Mockery Manor, a mystery-thriller set in a theme park in 1980s Britain. https://www.longcatmedia.com/mockery-..."

"What do you play when you first get a massive analog 80s polysynth? Stranger Things? Blade Runner? For me: Flight Of The Navigator. From the movie score by Alan Silvestri.

This is the Sequential / Dave Smith Instruments Prophet Rev2 desktop module, 16-voice version. This is using preset F2 P33, called 'C.S.A.T.'"

Premiered 37 minutes ago amenemo1010
Update: Re-Published on Jul 7, 2019

Watch past the intro.

"After months of research, tests and preparation, I can finally announce my new video with OP-Z as the protagonist. Next to the great success of my previous video with the OP-1, this time I will squeeze the little boy from Teenage Engineering using the power of new Sampling features and the stunning DMX option, to realize a unique idea: the alphabet of lights to communicate with the upside-down. This is my tribute to Stranger Things and, above all, a tribute to all of you who support me through this channel.

Stranger Things (Eleven's theme & Main title) with Polyend Dreadbox Medusa synth

Published on Jul 24, 2019 Miltos Schimatariotis

"As a follow-up for my Medusa synth covers I decided to do something about the Stranger Things series. Here, instead of just recreating the 'Main title', I added as an intro one of my favorites in the soundtrack, 'Eleven's theme'. All sounds are made with the Medusa only, with the addition of effects and especially Byome which helps a lot in the background atmosphere.

A few words about the process I followed for creating this video:

At first, I decided what parts of the soundtrack I was going to cover and roughly planned the arrangement. Then I started designing the sounds on the Medusa. That was probably the most entertaining part but also the most challenging because for the creation of the original tracks the composers had a lot more gear in their disposal. But since I have decided to restrict myself to only one synth, the Medusa, I ended up just creating sounds that sounded good to me without necessarily replicating the originals. So I would say that this is a free cover and not a replication. (especially Eleven's theme is way different from the original). The other restriction I wanted to add in the process is that I wanted to have as few sounds as possible in order to not over-complicate things and to be able to visualize almost everything in the video.
So, after making a rough version I started the final recordings. I was recording the audio part and the video part simultaneously, the audio in Cubase and the video in my Pocophone F1 smartphone with Filmic Pro app. The difficult part here was that I had to name the takes every time for the video file and the audio clips in order to not lose track of what I was going to use in the final product (I used DaVinci Resolve). So the clips you see in the video are corresponding to the same audio recordings you hear. The only exception is the pad at the intro which was double tracked and panned left right, so there I used only one video clip.
I have mixed/mastered the track in Cubase and I had in mind to not over-process the sounds of Medusa, so I have mostly the necessary EQing and compression. The effects (reverbs-delays) are all routed in parallel. The main effect processor I used was Unfiltered Audio Byome and some patches make use of the beautiful Carmen collection from patchpool/Simon Stockhausen."

Recorded stereo out of the mixer direct into Ableton. Credit for the original song goes to Kyle Dixon and Michael Stein. Pretty amazing synth work from those guys."
