During a trip to Austin in early 2020 I had a chance to revisit the Switched On synth shop I first toured in 2018 [video bellow]. Switched On have since moved from their original location to a new spot and are under new ownership, so it was a great opportunity to see the new synth store.

"When I made the popular YouTube series 'FM Catalogue of Materials', many viewers commented that they would love to see some more of the 'music tech as cinema' style created in the videos.

My new project 'Luminous Trilogy' release, does exactly that. In part 1 'WTD', synths and synth technical diagrams, together with Pure Data/Max patches, become casual parts of the film's environment, which is set in an alt near future. Part 1 was realised with analogue modular, whereas Part 2 "Breath" was scored using binaural audio, VCV rack and live Indian tablas. Part 3 'Contrails' uses physical models, Samplicity's Berlin Studios and vintage FM hardware."

Walking The Dulzaina - Luminous Trilogy - Part 1

Walking The Dulzaina is an edited one-shot music film which details the manic walkthrough time-lapse of an imaginary synthesised dulzaina (Spanish folkloric instrument) being taken for a walk through the "Las Vegas" like dressed streets of a small village festive celebration set somewhere in the near future.

The visuals are nods to the Bladerunner, Lynch, Weirdcore and Kubrick where the glow of transparent neon CRTs, display technical diagrams with a music technology theme. Some suddenly slide up from the ground, while others cross from one side of the street to another.

The music is inspired by minimalism, industrial techno synth-folk where Steve Reich and Techno meet Raymond Scott and 1960's BBC radiophonic.

Musical Equipment Detail:

Intro: Moog Subharmonicon through Fairfield Randy's Revenge ring modular - into two crunchy Elby Systems stereo valve preamps and out into a stereo pair of Doepfer A-199 spring tanks).

Dulzainas: Buchla Easel Command sometimes untreated and sometimes solo through a J.H. 'Son of a Storm Tide' stereo analogue studio flanger (built by Van Daal Electronics (second dulzainas and very low transition whoooses). Buchla and Subharmonicon sync locked and clock divided by Ornaments and Crime clock divider.

Final wormhole sequence: Subharmonicon through stereo A-199 Doepfer spring reverbs and Paulstretched.

"Switched On is at NAMM this year taste testing many of the new and exciting designs being debuted.

Korg has unveiled a replica of it's famed MS-20 scaled down to a miniature version. Everyone at Switched On loves the original MS-20 so the announcement of this was a pleasant surprise. I decided to do some noodling around with the Mini MS-20's parameters. I jacked directly into the output stage of it to avoid the chaotic background noise of the convention center. It has all of the original signal path and patching capabilities using the original Hz/Octave scaling. It also includes midi and usb connectivity. If you recall the iMS-20 controller it is essentially that in it's form factor, except rotary encoders have been replaced with pots and true analog circuitry designed by the original engineers. Best of all, it's going to be $599.00 and shipping by April.

Switched-On: The Birth of the Moog Synthesizer

"The History Center in Tompkins County Debuts Bob Moog Exhibition

Ithaca, NY - April 2014... The History Center in Tompkins County, in partnership with the Bob Moog Foundation, has announced the opening of the exhibition Switched-On: The Birth of the Moog Synthesizer.

Illustrating the story of Dr. Robert Moog and the creation and evolution of the groundbreaking electronic instruments bearing his name, Switched-On: The Birth of the Moog Synthesizer provides museum visitors with a wide-ranging, interactive insight into Dr. Moog's inventions and the creative process behind their design and development.

Based on interviews with family members, colleagues, and contemporaries, including Herbert Deutsch, Bernie Worrell, Shirleigh Moog, David Borden, and many more, the exhibition provides a unique view into the creative genius of Bob Moog, one of the founding fathers of modern electronic music. With rare Moog instruments such as a vacuum tube theremin, a Trumansburg-era Minimoog, and one of only three R. A. Moog Company PMS-15 amplifiers ever sold, Switched-On: The Birth of the Moog Synthesizer will be the first major exhibition on Bob Moog and Moog Synthesizers to occur in the region, and will run through May 31st, 2015.

Robert Moog came to Ithaca, NY in 1957 to begin his PhD work at Cornell University. He founded the R.A. Moog, Co. in the late 1950s, selling theremins and theremin kits throughout Ithaca. In 1963, Moog opened a storefront for his small factory in nearby Trumansburg, NY. It was there that the Moog modular synthesizer and the iconic Minimoog were born. The factory grew to become a mainstay in the region until Moog sold the company in 1971, and the new owners moved it to Williamsville, NY.

Switched-On: The Birth of the Moog Synthesizer tells the story of Moog's Trumansburg years, through the oral histories of those who knew him, worked with him, and shared his path in shaping a revolution in sound, technology, and music.

R.A. Moog Model 10 Modular Synthesizer at Switched On

Switched On recently restored a Moog Model 10 synthesizer. Before we sent it out the door we wanted to get a little bit of documentation to share.

It is very clear upon hearing the timbral quality of this system that everything described about the original Moog sound and the legendary 904a low-pass filter is very true. One especially nice module that is included in this system in the Fixed Filter Bank. You can consider this to operate like an EQ but with resonance! By driving up isolated harmonic bands pre-lowpass filter it adds a very pleasant sounding distortion that is unlike anything.
You can hear it demonstrated in the first patch in this video.

Switched-On Bach - Wendy Carlos

My previous two posts have me reflecting on the use of analog synths in more traditional, musical instrument roles. The quintessential example of this would of course be Wendy Carlos' Switched-On Bach. It is credited for propelling synthesis into rock and roll and the main stream. It's fascinating to wonder how things might be different had it not been released. Title link will take you to more, including this image and comments from Bob Moog:



"Switched-on Bach was released at the end of 1968 and became an immediate success. It was acclaimed as real music by musicians and the listening public alike. As a result, the Moog Synthesizer was suddenly accepted with open arms by the music business community. We witnessed the birth of a new genre of music--classical music, realized with impeccable musicianship on synthesizer and tape recorder.

Now, some three decades later, the electronic music medium has evolved into a mainstream musical tool. Sixteen-track and twenty-four-track recorders came to be widely used after the release of Switched on Bach, and then digital synthesizers, hard disk recorders, and computer-based music production systems. Wendy's contributions to this evolution cannot be overstated.

She has realized a wide range of high quality music, set ever-increasing standards for sound synthesis, developed a significant body of alternate tunings, and generously provided her usual perceptive advice to equipment manufacturers. Her four Bach/Baroque albums, specially remastered for this release, are major milestones in the evolution of electronic music. At the same time, each album stands by itself as an important contribution to our classical music tradition. I'm delighted to witness the re-release of these works, as are countless numbers of music lovers throughout the world.

A Hybrid Digisound & Aries Modular Synthesizer at Switched On

"This spectacular synthesizer system is a combination of Digisound modules (white faceplates) & Aries Modular (black faceplates). Originally there were two non-functional systems, an Aries Modular system and the Digisound. Switched On was asked to resurrect two separate system and combine them for the best arrangement of modules. The result was very pleasing to say the least!

This patch is based around the 4 wavetable based Digisound DCOs cycling through a bank of 8 wavetables each. Each DCO has 4 banks of 8 waveforms totaling at 32 possible waveforms. Occasionally you will see the bank being switched to allow a different set of 8 waveforms to cycle. By "multing" the pulse signal off the Digisound Quad LFO we are able to make all 4 Digisound DCOs step through various waveforms in time. One of the DCOs is being processed through the Digisound Ring Modulator to add some extra metallic brilliance, and another DCO is being processed through the Aries Frequency Divider adding even further versatility to the timbre. All 4 are being mixed and summed into the gorgeous sounding fully discrete state variable filter made by Aries. In our opinion the sound of the filter is somewhat reminiscent of a Sequential Circuits Pro-One. We are also sending just a touch of modulation from the Digisound Quad LFO to the cutoff frequency and resonance of the Aries Filter to add some extra animation to our sound. In this circumstance we are using the filter as an output stage as well.

An Interview with Bruno Spoerri on Astronauta Pinguim

Update: in case you read this post when it first went up, be sure to give it another look for a few updates.  It's a bit convoluted with quite a few tangents, but that's how it goes sometimes.

Initially a saxophone player, Bruno Spoerri explored electronic music in the 1960s on.

"In 1964 he was invited to a job in an advertising agency and began to work with electronic music using a Ondes Martenot and, after, using lots of synthesizers and also experimenting with electrified/synthesized saxophones..." "As a saxophonist and jazz improviser I always looked for ways to play without a keyboard."

Pictured above is Bruno with his EMS Synthi 100 (videos previously posted here and here).

On the Synthi 100: "I bought the Synthi 100 in 1971. In 1987 I gave it to Felix Visser (Synton) in exchange for a Fairlight CMI; some years he had to sell it at an auction, and I don't know where it is now (I would recognize the instrument, as I did some small changes on it)."  It was listed on Vemia back in 2009 posted here and here. In 1974, he recorded the album 'Iischalte (Switched-on Switzerland)'.

There's some fascinating history there including Ginette Martenot and the Ondes Martenot, Oskar Sala with his Mixturtrautonium, and Joel Chadabe. Regarding his original gear, "most of my analog gear is sold (most of it to the remarkable Swiss Synthorama of Martin Hollinger), but I still have my first synthi, the EMS VCS-3 (from 1970), the ARP 2600 with sequencer and the Lyricon I and II. I use the lyricon quite often in performances, the other gear mostly for demonstrations to visitors."
