Steady State Fate Positronic Transient Gate Sketchbook by VoltageCtrlR

"The compositions in this album feature live one take recordings of my experiments with the Steady State Fate Positronic Transient Gate eurorack synth module.

These synth patches give you an idea of the sonic possibilities that this module is capable of. The patch diagrams are visual expressions of the sounds heard on the album, some of the pieces started out as visual diagrams for me to interpret similar to the way a composer sits down and writes notation on staff paper.

Given the non linear nature of analog synth composing... some of these pieces capture the chaos and movement of the sounds. I’ve included patch notes for the people that don’t have interest in trying to decipher my diagrams. I encourage you to dissect and re interpret the patches in this sketchbook with your own artistic style and energy.

Special thanks to Andrew Morelli, the mastermind that designed the PTG for all the support on the project. I would also like to say thanks to the Muff Wiggler community that always keeps me inspired and on my toes.

Random Looping Sequencer

Random Looping Sequencer from VoltageCtrlR on Vimeo.

[Audio in left channel only]

"Here's a demo of the Random Looping Sequencer DIY module I built. It's added a lot of life to my setup and is excellent for live performance with some control over the randomness...

This patch features the RLS' seq out multed to uscale in and envelator gate in. envelator out to borg 1... borg out to mixer and into camera. The sound source is the uncle & anti osc tripple wave folded and filtered with the z2040 and ems synthi filter clone.

The Random Sequencer is a circuit that produces random control voltages. These can be completely random, or they can be locked into loops that repeat every 8, 16 or 32 steps. It was inspired by the long history of shift register pseudorandom synth circuits, including the Triadex Muse, Buchla 266 Source of Uncertainly, Ken Stone’s gated comparator and Grant Richter’s Noisering. This circuit includes a transistor noise generator, so should create true random binary sequences. However, the structure of the sequencer and the nature of the digital-to-analog converter used seem to give a particular character - tones that rise and fall in a particular way.

Analog Alchemy VoltageCtrlR

Analog Alchemy Stems_promo from VoltageCtrlR on Vimeo.

"This is one of the compositions from my up coming analog alchemy album.

This project features 10 compositions recorded live in one take with a 6u modular synth case, Elektron Machinedrum and an Arturia Microbrute. This project is being released in the Nativeinstruments STEMS format.

Each song is made of 4 elements that you can remix on the fly as a dj or sample chop and loop the elements to create new songs.

The Stems file can also be played like a regular audio file in your favorite mp3 player, making this project a hybrid between an album and sound/loop library."

Analog Meditation 432 Hz

Published on Jul 27, 2015 VoltageCtrlRtv

"This is a live improvised sound healing meditation performance recorded at the Inner Siddhi Sound Temple by Shiro Fujioka aka VoltageCtrlr (Voltage Controller).
This composition is tuned to 432 Hz, this frequency is great for putting the listener in a relaxed state to go deeper into meditation. This divine vibration is beneficial for mental and spiritual development because it is in resonance with the fractal nature of the universe.
This performance is a live one take recording from my upcoming Analog Meditation album that will be released 07.31.15

XAOC Devices Moskwa Sketchbook

"This is a collection of analog modular synth compositions showcasing the creative capabilities of XAOC Devices Moskwa roto sequencer eurorack module. Each auditory sketch on this project was recorded live in one take over a 3 week period with no outside sequencing from the computer. I originally intended to record 5-6 sketches for the project... but the Moskwa ended up being so fun and inspiring that I wound up with 13 compositions for this project.
This release comes with a PDF Moskwa sketchbook featuring art by Shiro Fujioka and visual patch diagrams of some of the sketches heard on this album that you can try and or re interpret with your own modular synth."

Piston Honda Sketchbook Vol.1

"The Piston Honda is a digital wavetable oscillator designed by Scott Jaeger (The Harvestman) with 2-dimensional waveform morphing.
Two ROMs are onboard, each containing 256 waveforms in 16 banks. Waves may be smoothly
morphed or violently jumped in two dimensions.

Given that this is one of my favorite oscillators in my system I thought I would start conducting some sonic experiments to explore this modules capabilities, quirks and character.

This is a collection of sonic sketches / patches from the mind of VoltageCtrlR were recorded at Akashic Mountain Studios in AZ.

Live Modular Synthesizer + REON Driftbox (@obrienmedia) "Haven Deux"

Published on Aug 30, 2015 Patrick OBrien

"This is the live studio version of the modular synthesizer set I put together for the Analogue Haven event in Santa Monica, CA on August 28, 2015.

All sounds were from my 12U eurorack Modular Synthesizer and the new REON Driftbox-R Limited from Roland.

Specs:

- The intro was played on the REON Driftbox-R which was released in July 2015. You can see two of my demos of that little synth here:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NMnZU...
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QcCl4...

- The drums are all Hexinverter's Mutant Bassdrum, Mutant HiHats, Mutant Clap and Noise Engineering's Basimilus Iteritas.

- I played Music Thing's Mikrophonie with my thumb during the song transition with the sounds coming from Braids.

- Sequencing is done by Intellijel's Metropolis, Kilpatrick Audio's K4815, and the Make Noise Pressure Points via Brains.

- The vocal samples near the end is from one of those secret Easter eggs on Mutable Instruments Peaks.

- The case is from Monorocket.

- The T-shirt is in support of my fellow modular synthesist Shiro Fujioka, known as VoltageCtrlr on Instagram. Check out his captivating music, too: https://instagram.com/voltagectrlr

No computers were used in this piece. All modular synths."

Metasonix R-54 Sketchbook vol.1

"This is a collection of auditory sketches I performed with the infamous Metasonix R-54 vacuum-tube driven synth module.designed by mastermind Eric Barbour.

About the R-54 in Eric Barbour's words...

"Welcome to the strange new world. The R-54 is the most radical, revolutionary module we've ever made. It will change the way you do music synthesis. There has never been an electronic-music product like this before. Even the oddest things that Buchla And Associates or Serge Modular ever made are prosaic and dull compared to the R-54."

Now that's setting the bar high!

This collections of improvised analog modular synth compositions feature the unruly tube driven R-54 module that refuses to be tamed.

The compositions on this ep were recorded live in one take with me tweaking the dials, controls and sometimes live patching. The R-54 is a really deep module that will keep you busy for years.

The proceeds of this auditory sketchbook will all go towards me getting the Metasonix R-51 module. Thanks for supporting my synth module addiction... I'll keep feeding your ears.

Karplus Session

Karplus Session from VoltageCtrlR on Vimeo.

"Just an impromptu karplus strong patch sound session recorded on a Sunday afternoon. Jai Surya Dev !"

snip via Wikipedia
"Karplus-Strong string synthesis is a method of physical modelling synthesis that loops a short waveform through a filtered delay line to simulate the sound of a hammered or plucked string or some types of percussion. Although it is useful to view this as a subtractive synthesis technique based on a feedback loop similar to that of a comb filter for z-transform analysis, it is better viewed as the simplest of a class of wavetable-modification algorithms now known as digital waveguide synthesis, as the delay line acts to store one period of the signal.

Alexander Strong invented the algorithm, and Kevin Karplus did the first analysis of how it worked. Together they developed software and hardware implementations of the algorithm, including a custom VLSI chip. They named the algorithm "Digitar" synthesis, as an abbreviation for 'digital guitar'."
