BURG - The Salt Of The Earth (Avalon, Modular, Sub-37)

Published on Jul 9, 2018 ollilaboratories

"If you like my stuff please support me on http://music.ollilab.com/ and https://www.patreon.com/theBURG

Taken from the album 'margot' now available on bandcamp - https://ollilaboratories.bandcamp.com...

My latest track after a short break making music.. it took a while to push through but yeah, here it is. :)

I wanted to give the sub 37 a go with the built in arpeggiator. One of my favorite styles of playing is to use an arp and layer that on top of the track in various ways. For those of you who have followed me for a while knows that I previously used the system-1 for these kinds of sounds. The waldorf blofeld was supposed to be a replacement for the system-1, but i found out after a while that it was really hard to properly sync the arpeggiator with midi in the blofeld :/ .. now i am really happy that the sub37 does this the way i want it to. The blofeld will stay in its case while I think about what to do with it. :)

Gear Used:

Moog Subsequent 37, KORG Grandstage, nord lead NLA1, digitakt, avalon bassline, korg volcas, TR-8s, elektron A4 (fx only), ms-20

BURG - neon (Abstrakt instruments Avalon bassline)

Published on Nov 12, 2017 ollilaboratories

"If you like my stuff please support me on http://music.ollilab.com/ and https://www.patreon.com/theBURG

This track is also available for download on bandcamp: https://ollilaboratories.bandcamp.com...

So I got the Abstrakt instruments Avalon bassline the other day, really missing the 303 style sounds since i sold my TB-3 it is safe to say my expectations were very high on this one.

I plugged it in, and it just took me into this hypnotic trance stage almost at an instant... i have no idea what was going on, I tried adding hihats, playing melodies on the volca keys, ms-20 etc.. but nothing felt right.. this 8 step sequence just wanted to breathe. And on my does it breathe and sound great. I'm completely blown away by this machine, possibly one of the best purchases I have made since I got my ms-20.

What you see and hear is me macro controlling the avalon knobs, cutoff, envelopes, accents to make it fluid and have the bassline progress over time .. also i did not want the other sounds to take too much space since this is all about the square bassline, period.

18 minutes might be a bit over the top with a 8 step sequence in 121 bpm, but man, i could easily play this for 20 minutes more :)

This is way more minimal in style that I normally do with BURG; but it felt so right to just take all the extra icing off of this one since the Avalon just wanted the space on this track.

Digitakt does the kick, rimshot, and a couple of dubby chords and a low-end sub-bass, volca bass does another filter modulated bass on top. FM does some stabs routed through the Avalon external in.

Modular sound sources, braids and rings background melodies + BIA for percussion.

Gear used: Abstrakt instruments Avalon, Elektron digitakt, KORG volca bass, KORG volca FM, tr-8 (just for sidechain FX on the volca bass).

FX used, RE-20 + Keeley caverns on modular, EQD space spiral and built-in FX in the Elektron analog four for the avalon.

Hope you will enjoy it!

BURG - black orion (digitakt, avalon bassline, korg volca, modular)

Published on Feb 4, 2018 ollilaboratories

Update: walkthrough video added below.

"If you like my stuff please support me on http://music.ollilab.com/ and https://www.patreon.com/theBURG

Here is my first proper track in 2018, dammit, finally.. January has been really crazy with daytime work to date and I have had a hard time finding time to make some music.

I wanted to scale things down a bit, and not use too many instruments, make it a bit more minimal. Come to think of it, I rarely use all of my gear on a track.. for me this is a vital part of my sound design process e,g learning to say stop when there is no more room in the track.

113 bpm, a bit more downbeat 4/4 with the Avalon Bassline driving the main theme. Low end bass is being served by a KORG volca bass, with a slight LFO on the filter to make it evolve slowly.

Digitakt handles the kickdrum + the dubby chords and hihats. Additional hihats and rimshot are added with the TR8.

The modular has 3 sounds, all controlled by the beatstep pro, a bass sequence with the MI braids + uVCF resonance cranked up pretty high modulated by PAM. Rings does a dreamy random melody which is heavily modulated by PAM aswell. Finally some percussion in the BIA, triggered by the beatstep pro, randomizing some CV modulation to make it non repetitive.

Lead sound in the KORG volca keys, but you guys probably know this sound by now :)

I hope you will enjoy this one! Also, stay tuned for a very special treat, a complete walkthrough video where I will cover how this track was made.

Roland Boutique JP-08 noodle demo

Published on Oct 24, 2015 ollilaboratories

http://www.rolandus.com/promos/roland_boutique/

"So finally I get to play the JP-08, modeled on the king of polyphonic synthesizers, Jupiter-8. I have never been this excited in my entire life.. wow what a machine!

So , before you start listening there is a couple of things.. i have never owned a Jupiter-8 nor Jupiter-6 so this synth is pretty new to me, which means that i am a bit lost at times. Also the sonical palette of this synth, is WAY more than i could possibly ever fit into 30 minutes of noodling... it is extremely powerful. So please do not expect this to be it, I have merely scratched on its surface.

This for me is just a feeling of the basic sounds of the synth, and yikes i can understand why people are in love with the Jupiter-8.

So onto the sliders, they are a bit small i agree.. but after some practice they are pretty simple to maneuver since they have a solid feel and some nice resistance in them. However, the Cross Modulation slider is probably the hardest one to set .. it takes a few seconds to get it right. (not in any way impossible)

There are NO external FX in the beginning, after 25.45 minutes i add vanilla reverb and delay to finish the session off.

I really hope this video as the other two, JX03/JU06 one is helpful and informational, just let the synths do the talking. Now i am off to record a massive JAM session with ALL three of them... so stay tuned for more! :)

cheers!

BURG SOUND - studio walkthroughs and jam sessions

Published on Dec 11, 2017 ollilaboratories

"If you like my stuff please support me on http://music.ollilab.com/ and https://www.patreon.com/theBURG

Now when studio oLLiLaboratories is nearing its v2.0 completion with the modular system + downsizing of the other gear, it was about time to address one of the most common questions I have had on my YT channel.. how is it all setup and connected?

If you have any questions please post them in the comment section below, if possible also specify the time if you have a question about something specific in the video so it is easier for me to find the section in the clip.

Also, hehe.. I was sort of rambling a bit there at the end how the BSP, digitakt and qu-bit is used.. so let me know if you should be confused. I added some text for clarity. :)

There will be as a minimum a part 2 to cover the keyboard side of the studio, however since these take a significant amount of time to records and edit dont expect the next one to turn up just yet :D And if you have anything you would like me to cover in the next video, feel free to give me suggestions and I will consider them.

BURG - Koda #Subsequent37 #AvalonBassline #Drumbrute #NovationPeak #Digitakt

Published on Oct 28, 2018 ollilaboratories

"If you like my stuff please support me on http://music.ollilab.com/ and https://www.patreon.com/theBURG

I hope i didnt scare you guys off with my previous ACID mayhem, haha. :) Here is a classic BURG tune, fresh from the oLLiLaboratories studio.

Now that i have the new layout ready, it was time to take the BURG spaceship for a ride. It feels really optimized at this point of time which makes me really happy.

On this track i wanted to avoid using the modular, e.g just going back to basics and work the other gear for a bit.. also i was very keen on trying out the Drumbrute impact and novation peak properly in the new setup. It worked out pretty well.

Gear Used:

* KORG grandstage + eventide space, CSIDMAN, Ditto 2X (piano and intro reverse loop)
* Moog Subsequent 37 + Space Echo, Strymon BlueSky (arpeggiator)
* Nord Lead A1 (slow arpeggiator pad, running free)
* Novation Peak + Keystep, (HPF Stabs)
* TR-8s (cymbals and Sidechain FX on volcas)
* Drumbrute Impact + Strymon El Cap (hihats, FM drum and clap)
* Digitakt (main kick + various percussion and a couple of dub stabs)
* Analog Four (end melody, mid track sequence + sequencer/FX for 0 coast)
* MakeNoise 0-coast, hollow sound bassline
* vBASS, low end bass line
* Avalon Bassline + FX in analog four (well, another bassline) :)
* vKEYS + ms-70 CDR (lead sound)
* KORG Kaoss Pad KP3+ (ambient samples + delays on insert on percussion)

I hope you will enjoy this one!

BURG SOUND - pilot episode (ms-20 jam session)

"If you like my stuff please support me on http://music.ollilab.com/ and https://www.patreon.com/theBURG

This is the jam session from the BURG SOUND pilot episode, made with the same sounds and FX as the tutorial.

Do note that there is a slight bit of post processing on this one, mainly some limiter to pull it up in level a bit else it would be a bit quiet in comparison with other vids.

Gear used: ms-20 mini, ms-70 CDR and tc electronic ditto x2

Enjoy!

I was sort of planning to release a sound design series, but man the editing took way longer time than expected.. and since I really want to focus on making music I'm not sure if there will ever be an episode two since this was extremely time-consuming, I have now a new found respect for my fellow YouTubers who create tutorials, super big kudos to you friends!

But since this one is already recorded and edited, for what it's worth.. here is the first pilot where in dive into the ms-20 mini and my signature lead sound enjoy!"

Roland Boutique JP-08 JU-06 JX-03 epic ambient jam session

Published on Oct 24, 2015 ollilaboratories

"So, what is better than playing one of the new Roland Boutique synths? Playing ALL three of them at the same time of course! Seriously, I have not had this much fun in ages.

I set up three independent patches, JX-03 with a slow attack fifth pad, the JU-06 with a slow PWM lead .. and finally the JP-08 with a complex sequence pattern.

I am adding a fair amount of delay and reverb on this patch, using two MS70s.

Well, not much else other to say than... play it loud and enjoy! :)

Hi Everyone,

Still working on getting myself up to speed in the new space digging into the gear and warming myself up. I made a 127 bpm something track, pretty minimal, upbeat but still pretty relaxed and dreamy. The star in this track is the Avalon Bassline, doing what it does best... square wave goodness is all over the place.

I also have some work to do fixing with the camera setup and different angles, this is a pretty complex challenge that will take some time given the angled ceilings that i have in the new space. While waiting there will be a few of these single and/or maybe dual cam videos for a little while... please have some patience while i get this sorted.

Play this one loud and in the dark for best effect.

BURG - Album Movement 05 (KORG volca, Roland Aira, ms-20, Microbrute, Nord Lead)

Published on Feb 21, 2016 ollilaboratories

"If you like my stuff, please support me on http://music.ollilab.com

Alright, stuff is coming up in a fast pace... so this is movement number 5.. i wanted to make this track feel a bit more uptempo even though its just 114bpm. Combining it with some airport/train footage i have been taking lately.. to get a sense of movement, as the track is about moving stuff forward.

Also, as you can hear I am back to the one note stuff on this one.. I feel that it is more BURG, dont what you guys think but i feel it should not be too happy.. the dreamy part must be there, and when fiddling and soloing on a single note it sort of becomes that automatically. :)

For the album I want to make a minimum of 15 tracks.. so i can cherry pick the goodies for the album. Dont worry, all versions will released in some sort of format so they will be available if you for some reason like the 2 track versions better. FYI there will be a fair amount of polishing away all the hiss and noises from the t-resonator and volcas on the 16 track edits.... haha :)

Gear Used: KORG volca bass, keys, sample, Novation Circuit, ms-20 mini, SQ-1, Elektron Analog Four, Roland Aira TR-8, System-1, TB-3, Arturia Microbrute, Roland boutique JX03, Nord Lead A1

Yeah, even more jam sessions techno style coming up... this is the third song/movement for my live gig in May.. i hope that the three latest jams will be able to work and blend into one hour of freestyle jamming :D Might have to do one more just to be on the safe side..

Also, i am planning maybe to bring the reface CP (which im not using on any of the three tracks) just to spice things up with some ambient style piano noodling on top.. what do you think ?

This one is heavy on the 0-coast sequence.. i am automating reverb in the A4 plug going wild on the EQD pedals... great fun. All in all I sense a good groove in this one.

Let me know what you think. BoOoOoM !

- INFO

“The Silent Earth (end credits)” is the first single from the upcoming BURG album "The Silent Earth."

When I started writing the new album in 2018, it slowly turned into an imaginary soundtrack that began telling the tales of a silent earth, long lost friends and family, and a planet scorched deeply by the chaos it has been subjected to.

The album is heavily influenced by early 70's and 80's sci-fi movies, from back in the day when the stories were slower and took longer time to tell because they were important to the director, and set the foundation and style of the genre.

One of the missing pieces when the album got close to completion was the last track, the one that plays at the end of the movie while the end credits are rolling, the track that gives the listener a slight feeling of hope from all the despair.

I paired up with I Speak Machine for a collaboration over at their Patreon, Tara Busch lending her unique voice and aesthetics to the title track. The final result is a blend of I Speak Machine and BURG in the best way imaginable, a dystopian tune with a small shimmer of hope.

I am releasing a vinyl single with “The Silent Earth (end credits)” as the A-side. The track on the B-side, “The Quiet Earth” is exclusive to the single. The single is limited to 200 copies only, and is a special long play 7" 33rpm blue colored vinyl.

The single is available for pre-order now, the first 50 at a special discounted price.

Yamaha CS-80 (synthetic ode to Elektrish studios)

video upload by ollilaboratories

"I have been in heaven, synth heaven... the Elektrish Vintage Synthesizer Studio & Museum. This is a place where in the future people in Sweden/Malmö can see/touch/play/record the synths and feel the vintage tolex smelling heat surge from a massive extremely well curated synthesizer and electronic instruments collection. Big hats off to Jörgen, the curator and owner of the museum.. i cant wait to see what the future holds for all the gear heads when they enter this holy ground.

About the piece, Yamaha CS-80, what can i say? The biggest and baddest of them all... the studio was so hot that i was literally fuming, lost track of time and managed to gain the signal a wee bit hot. But i dont care, this was so much fun and i want to share the joy with you call.

Top panel plays the main lead, bottom panel i am adding a fifth, sort of organ style sound, poly AT controlling vibrato on VCO and VCF, adjusting and mixing them a bit and also adjusting the attack on both for a smoother sound.

Played live in one take, EHX 720 stereo looper playing in reverse a plucky CS80 sound in the background, el capistan for delay and bigsky modulated room reverb. Thats it... and yeah, a hot signal too, so you all know what to expect.

Big Thanks to Jörgen for having me, i will come back soon. ps, I now smell like a vintage synth.. and i am completely fine with it. No shower for me for a while :)"
