Roland boutique SE-02 (studio electronics) sound demo

Published on Sep 30, 2017 ollilaboratories

"Next up testing in the boutique series is the SE-02, and really this tiny little matchbox of a synth sounds like a SE-01 and Model D on steroids.. it is just completely bonkers. :D and it's analogue dammit!!

I had the original model D when I lived back in Europe, and seriously, this is really really close to the feeling and oomph that it had. Adding the extra features.. well, its just becomes next level stuff :)

FYI, the signal might be just a bit hot at times / and yes, there is a little jam at the end :D

So, a few words on the video and format. There are heaps of demo-videos out there already with the SE02, and my take on this is to noodle around and do sound design/demo and give you insight how i personally work with synths when wiggling with knobs. So no feature deep dive, I try however to add some subs when there are weird stuff going on, and I hope this helps with clarity (if not, please ask in the comment section below).

And YES, i use FX (not all the time), if you have questions on where and when it is on, again please ask.

FX (from right to left connected in series) .. audio out from SE02 in mono to SolidGoldFX electroman (BBD delay), Catalinbread CSIDMAN (granular delay), tc electronic ditto X2 (looper), Strymon el Capsitan (tape echo), Strymon blueSky (reverb) -- to mixer and 2 track. The track is slightly normalized to keep some of the peaks under control, else what you see is what you hear.

I hope you can enjoy it!!

BURG - Live set MiniMalaysia 20140517 (elektron analog four premiere)

Published on May 17, 2014 ollilaboratories·31 videos

"Please support me on bandcamp if you like my music: http://music.ollilab.com/

This is a part of my latest live set, recorded at Minimalaysia night / Palate Palette in Kuala Lumpur 20140517 (happy birthday norway !)

I am really excited about this because after just a few days in my possession I got the opportunity to use the amazing Elektron Analog Four, first time ever, live :) ... damn what a machine, i simply cant believe the power of this beast (i have yet just scraped the surface of its potential). So far I am really impressed...!

So onto details, Forgot to start the cam in time (lost 4 min in start), and for some strange reason it stopped recording after 38 mins, so this is what you get. (set was 55 mins appx).

And for those of you with great notice to details, yes i lost sync on the KORG volcas momentarily a bit into the set (this really confused me during the set), seems either that i didnt insert the sync cables properly or they got pulled out by accident. Managed to fix it however.. not a big disaster, just a note to anyone playing w the volcas to check the sync cables properly :) You can see me pushing the cables back in position at 22.40 appx

Gear used, Kaoss Pad KP3+, KORG volca bass x2, KORG volca keys, Roland TR-8 Aira (not visible in the vid), Elektron Analog Four, Jomox T-resonator MKII, Ibanez es-2, mx400 line mixer, zoom G3 multifx plus the Zoom Q4 cam that captures all audio and video.

I hope you like it, and hey, follow me on facebook for all the latest news and musical updates! Cheers!

Strymon volante vs Avalon Bassline

Published on Jun 7, 2019 ollilaboratories

"If you like my stuff please support me on http://music.ollilab.com/ and https://www.patreon.com/theBURG

#tb303 #strymon #refaceCP

This is not a demo or a showcase of the Strymon volante in any way, this is just me noodling around after a long hiatus trying to get back on track due to severe creative block. I have had zero inspiration lately.. so I needed to dial things back and work with a minimal setup to break the ice.

The 303 square bass is a very simple 8 step sequence, I wanted to make it feel bigger and more complex. So I used the "tape heads" in the volante to add/build up the track in a subtle way.

Half way through the track, I turn on a pre recorded loop (reface CP in reverse) on the 720 when I do the melody style editing on the Avalon.

Gear used:

* 303 square bass, Avalon bassline, through the Strymon volante (magnetic drum)
* Yamaha Reface CP, Rhodes piano, Rd1, 720 looper, Strymon blue sky (modulated room)
-- FX in reface CP, slight tremolo and a long analogue delay

All is mixed on a behringer 1002B, recorded straight into the Zoom H5.
-- Post processing, compressor and limiter to balance things out a bit.

I hope you will enjoy this one.

New Toy - Yamaha PSS-380

video upload by ollilaboratories

"If you like my music you can find it here http://bit.ly/BurgMusic and also please consider supporting me at patreon for as little as 1 USD http://bit.ly/BurgPatreon

##

Hey everyone, sorry for the very long silence... life has happened and I have had to prioritize family and other projects for some time. Here is a little video for you all to show some signs of life from the BURG HQ.

I bought this cheap little Yamaha Porta sound synth to have in the den, writing songs and capturing ideas... this is one of the first ideas/melodies that came out (prly something i have done before), and i thought, why not just play the melody with the PSS-380 and make a video? It actually sounds pretty good, albeit a bit noisy... but still pretty enjoyable. Since it runs on batteries i can play everywhere in the house so whenever i have an idea i can just turn it on and work on the melodies. Also, it is actually pretty powerful, the FM section has some direct controls to adjust SPECTRUM/MODULATION, which give access to what sounds like the operator order and modulation of the same, pretty cool stuff.

What you hear is the PSS-380 through the ms70 CDR zoom FX pedal ( carbon delay, particle reverb ) and the EHX 720 stereo looper for the bass melody. All is recorded live onto my Zoom H5 recorder.

Take care everyone, and thanks for sticking around ! you rock!"

BURG - washed ashore (ambient jam, ms-20, blofeld, reface CP, strymon)

Published on Mar 4, 2018 ollilaboratories

"If you like my stuff please support me on http://music.ollilab.com/ and https://www.patreon.com/theBURG

An ambient session for you all, with an ominous weird feeling that I cannot explain,, no idea what it is .. the track is just odd.

Anyways.. I accidentally left some of the other synths on while setting things up.. or an FX on something which was not used so there are significant background hissing noises going on. Even though it's noisy I did not want to scrap the tune.. i needed to share it so here it is.

Main lead is on the ms-20, i swap VCO2 between 8' and 4' for different styles plus that i have HPF filter resonance on 2 o'clock, so I can work the HPF filter for added textures for the lead sound.

On the reface CP I recorded a loop, on 1/2 speed, reverse in the tc electronic X2 looper, CSIDMAN gives some granular delays, reverse relay in the particle plus a pretty huge reverb in the bluesky.

Blofeld does some arpeggiated percussion, modulated pretty heavily in the synth, plus that the arpegiattor is set to trigger some of the notes on random so it does not really repeat itself. A simple delay and a plate reverb from the eventide space and timeline.

NLA1 does a simple pad, with built in FX, filter controlled by an expression pedal on the floor.

Gear list:

Nord Lead A1, KORG ms-20 mini, Yamaha Reface CP, waldorf blofeld

FX:

Strymon el Capistan, bluesky, timeline, Eventide space, red panda particle, catalinbread CSIDMAN, tc electronics ditto X2 looper

Enjoy!

SolidGoldFX - surf rider III + electroman vs KORG ms-20 / System-1

Published on Apr 12, 2015 ollilaboratories

"I have recently had the opportunity to try out some excellent pedals from SolidGoldFX- this time i hooked up the surf rider III (reverb) and electroman (delay) with the KORG ms-20 mini. Accompanying the ms.20 sequence is a simple but beautiful lead sound on the System-1 which uses its internal FX delay and reverb processing.

This is a classic, kill your darlings track... it actually started out with bass / drums etc etc.. but i chose to strip it down to just to the two remaining components, sequence and melody, it felt more organic this way.

I hope you like it... and also as always no mutitracking or post processing, all played live (ms-20 sequenced by ableton live)

Also, please make sure to check out SolidGoldFX at http://solidgoldfx.com/"

BURG - my very first modular jam (intellijel, makenoise 0-coast, eventide space)

Published on May 4, 2017 ollilaboratories

"I have no idea what I'm doing, but it's fun! :D My first modular jam... well, you have asked for it and here it is.

I purchased an intellijel 7U case, since it's really neat to travel with, my good friend steve lent me some utilities which i mounted.. I'm using the 0-coast as the sound source with some volca key noodling on top.

All is then sent through the red panda on to the eventide space and to 2-track.

Note: I do have some weird ground loop sound kind of sounds going on I need have to checked out.. but what the heck, its modular so I posted this one anyway !

Be careful with the volume, its dynamic !

hehe, enjoy..or something :D"

Eventide space - Blackhole + Yamaha Reface CP

Published on Mar 11, 2017 ollilaboratories

"If you like my stuff, please support me on http://music.ollilab.com/

Woah ! its 2017 and this is my first video out :)

Today I was really lucky finding the eventide space for a really good price so I took it with me home.. I decided to just hook it up and try the blackhole algorithm that everyone is talking about, and i really understand what ppl mean now.. yikes its so dark and lush and deep and, well.. listen for yourselves. :) Playing a very simple tune, just jamming around.. the reface CP Rd-1 sound with some proper amount of internal drive and tremolo FX, plus later in the track you also hear the Yamaha CP80 sound.

GEAR: Yamaha reface CP, through the red panda particle (w slight reverse delay) into the eventide space, blackhole.. i start out a bit lower (basically preset settings) then crank it up to max gravity and decay. The bass that you hear is me stepping on the ditto looper on the floor.. which had this C minor reverse loop from the 0 coast stored.. so i though, yeah.. why not, lets use that too for some added depth to the melody.

Thats all folks.. hope you like it !"

#eurorack #KORGmonologue #subsequent37

As you might already know, the other day I made a new track, with some 707 beats, a bit more laidback and relaxed but with a lot of groove.

So... the story is, one my my patrons, Dragan said "At the track end I wished there was a "periorbital dark circles part 2". Like this story has some grand events yet untold... which if accompanied with a stomping 4 on the floor could rock the universe"

Well.. Dragan, here it is, Enjoy! :D

ps, there is some humming noise coming from the eventide space plus a helluvalot of low end bass from the vBass (need to fix that bass for a future release) .. so, watch your sub-woofers, this one is crankin it :D

Gear Used:

- Roland TR-8s, 707 snare, percussion and master Side Chain FX for digitone, vKeys, vBass
- KORG volca Keys and Bass

Livejam revisited - 303 style

video upload by ollilaboratories

"If you like my music you can find more over here http://bit.ly/BurgMusic

##

So when i was messing around with the previous setup for the eleven and nine track... I happened to stumble over an old pattern/track i played at Fono KL many moons ago. This track actually never made itself all the way of becoming a real tune so i decided.. hey why not just remodel it a little bit, add some 303 squares and saw for taste and jam a bit? Said and done!

Gear used:

- Digitakt - kick; low end bass and all of the percussion
- Norand mono, FM style modulated sequence modulated
- Avalon bassline, square lead + for the first time ever in BURG history, sawtooth and resonance. :)
- Analog four adds delay/reverb and only acts as a mixer for the avalon/norand
- KP3+ granular delay, mixed low in the background for that delicate glitch feel

All was recorded onto the Zoom H5 on 2 track and mastered post in my DAW with iZotope 7 limiter and compressor + EQ.

BURG - Fontenay Escape (Moog Subsequent 37 vs Strymon)

Published on Sep 3, 2019 ollilaboratories

As a BURG patreon You will get access to behind the scenes materials, exclusive live streams, tiers with stems, loop packs and other perks including access to the exclusive BURG discord.

Track info:

Getting back on track after some time away from the studio, best recipe is to scale things down and focus on just one instrument. Today the Moog Subsequent gets a rundown, a moody laid back tune that that popped up straight off the bat when i turned the sub37 on.

All you hear in the track is the subsequent 37, with bass loop from the same pre-recorded into the EHX 720 stereo looper which kicks in halfway through the track. FX on duty is ICE delay algorithm on the timeline, plus a modulated room reverb in the bluesky.

The sub37 Filter envelopes are set to looping/latched, so the synth is in latch mode all through the track, forcing me to adapt my playing on the keyboards to ensure proper demarcation of the single and duo mode (set to low note prio) when alternating between one and two keys pressed.

This playing technique give a very wide palette with just the one sound, no need to swap patches, just play two notes for more mellow melodies, alternate to one key mono style for that larger 2VCO sound.

Gear Used:
- Moog Subsequent 37
- Strymon Timeline
- Strymon Bluesky
- Electro Harmonix 720 Stereo Looper

All recorded down on 2 track, Zoom H5

late night modular patch (mutable instruments, make noise, intellijel)

Published on Jun 10, 2017 ollilaboratories

"If you like my stuff please support me on http://music.ollilab.com/

Before I started to tear down yesterday's patch I wanted to do a modular only freestyle jam on it.. some additions of a kick drum and even more chopped up samples in the morphagene turned it into a different tune really :) This modular stuff is fun!

Main sound sources are MI braids + 0-coast and the morphagene, braids is modulated by the maths, tides and sequenced by the beat step pro, filter in the 7U is ripples and uVCA from intellijel. 0-coast is standalone and is only sequenced by the beat step.

Kick drum and snare are from the peaks, triggered by the best step in a random fashion :)

FX, EQD space spiral and reverb from the Keeley caverns + some random reverb washes in the Elektron Analog four (not in picture) for the 0-coast.

But now, all patch cables are out... new sounds for the next run! :D

Enjoy, BooM!"

The mighty JUPITER-4

video upload by ollilaboratories

"So here is the story, after the EMOM event last night a Roland JUPITER-4 magically appeared at my house!?! My Pal Niklas at SHS has been collaborating with the eminent guy calling himselft synthdude.se on some projects.. and while Niklas is out having fun playing with other gear i decided to take the JUPITER-4 one for a spin.

Yes, the signal is a bit hot at times and the VCA is also helping out to bring some of that 70's warmth... but hey, who cares? this is all about inspiration and having fun in the moment.

Make sure to enjoy this one and take care!

Happy 2022 everyone!

This song was a late night session recorded a couple months back ( OCT 2021 ) not originally meant for release but after a few listens it has this special feeling that i thought was worth sharing with you all. The recording was all done in one take, more or less adlib on the go with the exception of the KORG monologue sequence which was pre-programmed.

You can also find this track on the cold/err EP https://music.ollilab.com/album/cold-err together with two other songs i recorded in my new studio space during 2021. The EP release version has a message and voices overlaid post production, for those of you with sharp senses :)

This is a very rough take, it has a lot of noises, overdrive and glitches but i decided to keep it as is due to raw natural feeling of the jam. Straight from the heart, unfiltered.

Take care all, hoping that this year will bring loads of great music and great times to everyone out there. Stay safe and keep the music flowing!

Yours truly

In the meantime, please enjoy another MicroFreak session which i recorded more or less back to back with the previous video. I kind of like the theme on this one so might use it for a future song for my upcoming album.

Take care everyone, play the music you love and stay safe!! See you soon!

Track info:

With this track I am trying to break free from writers block. I have been working a lot lately, spending time away from the studio which just pushed me into a dark hole of musical procrastination. I decided to go back to basics just using a couple of instruments playing a simple melody i have had glued to my brain for some time... and hey it worked, out came this tune :)

The melody is probably destined for something a bit bigger so I'll keep this one in my back pocket for now as there are still some unexplored variations to the main theme.

Hope you will enjoy it !

Gear used:

- Moog Subsequent 37 + Strymon timeline (dTape), BlueSky (modulated room)
- KORG Monologue + SolidGoldFX electroman delay
- Novation PEAK + Arturia Keystep as sequencer

All recorded on the Zoom H5 on 2 track, mixed in the Behringer 1002B. Post processing, compressor and limiter plus a slight bit of EQ to lift the mids and high as the track was a bit muddy."
