SUPERBOOTH 2024: Tangible Waves - AE Modular System

"At Superbooth 2024, Sonic State caught up with Robert from Tangible Waves to discuss the latest offerings from the AE Modular lineup. With a growing palette of modules, now totaling around 130 options, Tangible Waves is creating an expanding modular format environment. One highlight of their showcase was the new quick swap case, allowing for easy module swapping without the need for screws. Additionally, the incorporation of MIDI support, powered by the MD main module, opens up a world of possibilities for patching and control within the modular system, including the use of polyphonic oscillators like the micro poly module demonstrated during the interview."

SUPERBOOTH 2024: Supercritical - Redshift 6 Polysynth

"At Superbooth 2024, Timo from Supercritical showcased the *Redshift 6*, an analog polysynth with six voices. The Redshift 6 features a versatile *Demon Core *DCO design that allows for up to 16 notes to be played simultaneously. The synth offers a range of engines, unique sync tricks for creating complex, polyphonic sounds, and it's 6 part multitimbral. The filter section boasts a multimode filter engine with customizable character settings and a phaser engine for classic phaser effects.

In addition to its powerful sound engine, the Redshift 6 includes a stereo mix bus with per-voice panning and a digital effects section with delay, chorus, and reverb (expected in future updates). It's all analog until the bypassable stereo DSP effects processor.

SUPERBOOTH 2024: U-He - Zebralette Soft Synth

"At Superbooth 2024 we met up with Urs Heckmann of* U-He*, and he told us about the progress of varous products, some of which are ready, and some which are in the pipeline. He started by showing us Zebralette*, which now gets a dark mode, which is good for people who don't want to strain their eyes. *Zebralette *is still a work in progress, but Urs said he hoped the next beta of *Zebralette wouldn't be too far away now.

Urs also showed us an oscilloscope, which is also still in progress, and is similar to the oscilloscope in *Hive*, but as a stand alone app, with zoom, freeze and you can zoom down to a single cycle, and even down to sample level. You can save what you see as a wave file, which promises to be very useful.

"At Superbooth 2024 we met up with Mattias at the Reason Studios booth to find out about *Reason 13*. This is the latest iteration of the DAW from Reason Studios, and it's packing some serious enhancements. This version promises to revolutionize your workflow with a completely revamped browser, an array of new Rack devices, and a treasure trove of patches, samples, and loops. There is a new 2 oscillator synth, *Polytone*, which is designed as the go-to for classic synth sounds, and has randomizer function with which Mattias demonstrated some delicious clangerous sounds. The interface and sequencer have been meticulously redesigned for a smoother, more intuitive experience, allowing you to focus purely on your creative flow.

Reason 13 now includes a unified browser for easy access to patches, samples, and loops with enhanced filtering options. The new Rack services bring powerful tools like Sidechain, Gain, and Stereo, while the improved sequencer offers better zooming and layout modifications. The redesigned interface ensures faster navigation, making Reason 13 an efficient and inspiring music production environment.

"At Superbooth 2024, Sonic State caught up with Tobias from Chompi Club to discuss their latest release, the limited edition colorway collaboration with Chase Bliss*. The *Chompi *sampler offers chromatic and one-shot sampling, basic sound design features, and built-in effects like delay, reverb, tape saturation, tape warble, and filters. The firmware update allows for proper send and return with external effects, expanding the sound possibilities. *Chompi pedals are stereo, providing a unique resampling capability where users can bring back the signal and re-sample it, creating complex textures and ambient pads quickly.

Additionally, the Chompi *also features a unique looper function where all samples can be loops and vice versa. Users can add effects like glitch and create interesting textures through live audio manipulation. "At Superbooth 2024, Jason from Nobula introduced us to their latest module, the Echo Cinematic*. This module, which has been in development for about three years, combines EQ, delay, reverb, and a knob recorder in a compact 12 HP unit. Inspired by the dub Echo machines of old, *Jason aimed to replicate the unique sound he experienced in studios by bringing the Echo back through the desk and EQing it to create a feedback loop that adds character and depth to the sound.

The Echo Cinematic features a range of filter options including low pass, high pass, peak, notch, and comb filters, providing users with a versatile array of sonic possibilities. With fully syncable delay times, a built-in reverb, and a knob recorder for capturing performances, this module offers is ideal for creating those classic, almost out of control dub delays.

SUPERBOOTH 2024: Error Instruments - Candy Cloud Experimental Synth

"Sonic State had a chance to catch up with Paul from Error Instruments at Superbooth 2024 to get a closer look at their latest creations. One of the highlights from the interview was the Candy Cloud - an experimental synthesizer designed for both children and adults. With its unique delay and satisfying cherry knobs, users can explore a range of sounds from cinematic to droney or pulsing. It has an instrument input so it can also be used as an FX processor.

The interview also touched upon other intriguing products, such as the Ballerina and Brinta. The Ballerina*, a limited-edition device with CV control over its dancing girl and music box, is described as more of a fun gimmick as is *Dreams, *where you pull the string to start the music box. *Brinta, a granular sampler developed in collaboration with This Is No Rocket Science, offers an affordable option for those interested in granular synthesis. With upgrades to the software and enhanced audio levels, the Brinta provides users with a unique and engaging sonic experience. SUPERBOOTH 2024: PWM - Mantis Polysynth

"At Superbooth 2024, we met up with Paul Whittington from PWM who presented the long-awaited Mantis synthesizer. The Mantis boasts a duophonic design with the capability to produce four fully formed voices, making it a potent polysynth. With 100 presets in each of its two banks, the Mantis offers a diverse range of sounds through its two filters which can be panned in the stereo field.

Mantis also includes onboard effects such as chorus and reverb, adding depth and character to its sonic capabilities, and can be powered via usb c. With MIDI control for every parameter and full-size MIDI connectivity, the Mantis was designed in collaboration with the late, great Chris Huggett, so it's bound to become a classic.

According to *Mathias*, the *S4 is a versatile device that can function as a tape player, polyphonic sampler, and real-time effects processor. With features like a granular device, 48-band filter bank, modulation system, and more, the S4 offers a range of creative possibilities for musicians and producers alike.

The S4*'s ability to transform sounds in advanced and musical ways was evident in the demo, where *Mathias showcased its granular device, filter device, modulation system, and live effects processing capabilities. SUPERBOOTH 2024: Nono - Major Tom Desktop Sequencer

"At Superbooth 2024, Filippo from Nono showcased their latest desktop sequencer modules, starting with the four-track CV gate sequencer boasts a strong focus on the percussive aspect, with the option to expand it with two-channel expansions and a CV-in expander for parameter control via CV. The six-track desktop version includes the CV-in expansion and offers detailed control over gate levels, lengths, dynamics, and more for creating intricate sequences. The sequencer features classic 16-step sequencing along with triplet options for added groove, allowing for easy polyrhythms and fine time shifts. With an analog approach and digital functionality, Nono's sequencer provides a user-friendly experience with minimal menu diving.

The video also featured the sounds of the Pocket Operator Modular and the crossover filter from *Buck Brands*, showcasing the versatility of the sequencer in action. The Eurorack version of the sequencer is currently available for pre-order on the Nono website, with a planned release date in August at a price of $726. SUPERBOOTH 2024: Sound Workshop - Wiggler Expressive Mono Synth

"At Superbooth 2024, we met up with Chris at Sound Workshop who revealed his unique *Wiggler*, a digital monosynth with a single morphing oscillator that you can blend with white noise, and a keybed that can wiggle up and down as well as left to right. Chris describes it as a MiniMoog for expressive synth nerds, with pressure giving loudness expression and wiggling for vibrato. The small keybed gives you one octave of a selectable scale, and was inspired, Chris tells us, by old flutes. There is also an attack decay envelope called Strike which adds a little harmonic thwack to the start of the sound.

Wiggler has MIDI and 5 CV outputs for each of the expressive parameters so you can wiggle away on any synth you like.

SUPERBOOTH 2024: Tiptop Audio - Triax 8 & More

"At Superbooth 2024, Gur at Tiptop Audio showcased their latest innovations in the world of modular synthesis, introducing the range of new ART polyphonic modules and utilities that are set to revolutionize the way musicians interact with their modular systems. Vortex 6 *, a PPG Wave oscillator, *Octopass Poly Filter*, *Octostages Poly Envelope and Octogain are all set to begin shipping straight after Superbooth 2024.

All these polyphonic modules peak to each other using ART*, Tiptops polyphonic signal, and this signal travels through the *Polytip patch cords. Gur also revealed some new utilities, including *M*, a Polytip Mult.

Next Gur revealed the Triax8*, a fully analog polyphonic oscillator featuring 16 true analog oscillators designed by the renowned *Dave Rossum and his colleagues at SSI*. The *Triax8 offers a rich and diverse sound palette, allowing users to create anything from beautiful pads to classic vintage analog tones. The oscillator also boasts a linear FM with true zero, enabling users to experiment with frequency modulation and create complex and evolving sounds.

SUPERBOOTH 2024: Fred's Lab - Manatee

"At Superbooth 2024, Fred from Fred's Lab showcased the final version of their long-awaited spectral synthesizer Manatee. Manatee offers a unique approach to sound design with two envelopes, two sources including a spectrum generator, sub-oscillator with FM options, classic multimode filter, distortion, bitcrusher, delay, equalizers, and a versatile mixing section. The synthesizer also boasts 64 factory presets with additional user slots for customization.

In terms of connectivity, the Manatee features MIDI in, out, through, clock input, stereo audio outs, and a headphone jack. Initially, the synthesizer will be available to Kickstarter backers, followed by pre-orders on the website at a preferential price. Fred highlighted the hard work put into the Manatee and its rich, deep sound quality. Kickstarter supporters should begin receiving their Manatees in a couple of weeks.

"At Superbooth 2024, Alan from AJH Synth unveiled a new, highly-specialized synth commissioned by none other than Hans Zimmer himself. This analog modular system was designed to be the centerpiece of the new *BBC Radiophonic Workshop*, a passion project of Zimmer's aimed at recreating the iconic studio at Maida Vale. With dual monophonic synth voices featuring stereo capabilities, a triple crossfader for intricate crossfading effects, and a plethora of modulation options including tap tempo LFOs and sample and hold modules, this synth is a powerhouse of vintage sound with a modern twist. SUPERBOOTH 2024: Analog Sweden - Crum 2 - Enigizer Modules

"At Superbooth 2024 we met up with Fred from Analog Sweden who introduced us to some of their new Enigizer *modules, but was especially excited to show us the new *Crum 2*. *Crum 2 is, simply put, a drum machine with melodic and harmonic abilities. Based on an initial design by* Albert Niestrom*, who designed an initial version called Crum Drum*, the *Crum 2 is designed to be bigger and more flexible than its little brother.

The wooden prototype Crum 2 has a very distinctive and clean design by renowned designer* Love Hulten*, and it looks straight out of a 1970s sci-fi movie. Under the hood, Crum 2 has 4 channels with 6 sound engines each covering percussive and melodic textures, live full control over all parameters on the front panel, probability beat generation, step and live record all with a master reverb, delay and drive effect block.

"At Superbooth 2024, Jesse from Ableton showcased the latest features of the PUSH playing together with synths. The focus has been on enhancing stability, fixing bugs, and integrating new functionalities. At the exhibition, Jesse delved into the realm of modular synthesis, demonstrating the intricate connections between PUSH and modular gear to craft unique musical compositions. By utilizing the expressive pads of *PUSH*, Jesse showcased how modular synths can be controlled and manipulated in real-time, offering a glimpse into the creative possibilities when combining these two technologies.

Jesse's setup featured a Trinity module by Modbap for drums, while showcasing the versatility of the* FH2 for CV generation and the *Expert Sleepers ES3 and ES6 for interfacing with modular gear. "Sonic State attended Superbooth 2024 and caught up with Chris from Expressive E to discuss their latest release, *Noisy 2*. This brand new software synth is a bi-timbral synth that uses noise as a source signal and resonators to create unique sounds. With 700 presets in MPE mode, users can expect a wide range of sound possibilities. The most exciting feature of NOISY 2 is the integration of expression control with the synthesizer, allowing for dynamic triggering and continuous control. SUPERBOOTH 2024: XOR Electronics - Nerdseq Expanders

"At Superbooth 2024, Thomas from XOR Electronics showcased their new expanders for the NerdSeq sequencer. The dual-core expander features a two times four voice oscillator with 32 waveforms that can be independently mixed, allowing for multi-octave chords to be played in a paraphonic way. Integrated into the NerdSeq, the expander also includes eight LFOs for manipulating different parameters within the waveform, as well as a stereo mode with two audio outputs for creating a rich stereo field.

In addition to the dual-core expander, XOR Electronics introduced a small add-on module for the TipTop Art System, enabling polyphonic sequencing with up to six columns of notes. This module, compatible with the Art protocol, is a cost-effective solution for integrating polyphonic sequencing into the Art system. With both products set to be available in the summer, these expanders offer expanded capabilities for electronic musicians seeking new ways to explore and experiment with their sound.
