STYLOPHONE 350S

"STYLOPHONE 350S

The huge older brother to the small stylophones of the late 60's early 70's, this is a rare and amazing sounding synthesizer.

One rare & amazing sounding synthesizer, with multi-effects & two-stylus operation. This is the huge high-end older brother to the tiny Stylophone organs of the 60's & 70's. Bizarre sci-fi synth tones & effects, with a photo-sensor vibrato way ahead of its time. In great working condition, well-maintained & ready to play. This awesome rarity is a great addition to anyone's collection.

This is Dubreq's professional version of their original Stylophone. The 350S is much larger, to be played on a table or rack rather than hand-held like the Stylophone. It has two styli, a 3.5 octave keybed, many effects & functions, plus a larger speaker. Only a few thousand of these were sold & they're quite collectible now.

Dubreq Ltd estimates all Stylophone 350S's in operable condition worldwide to be about 200-300. This is rare for any musical instrument. This unit is fully functional, and it sounds just weird, out of this world, a musical time warp.

FEATURES:
Controls: Volume, Photo-Control Vibrato/Waa Waa, 2 waveforms, Decay, Reiteration, 2 styli, 3.5 Octave Keybed, Speaker

Tones: Woodwind, Brass, Strings & combined&, Pitch Tune Control External Jacks: Input, Pedal, Output to Speaker

Battery power: uses 2 x PP9 Batteries (which are INCLUDED)

CONDITION: Barely used, clean, works 100%. Working great."

Stylophone Trio

YouTube Uploaded by peahix on Mar 28, 2012

"Hear a fancy recording of this piece here: http://soundcloud.com/peahix/stylophone-trio [embed below]

This is a live performance of a trio I wrote for stylophones. The stylophonists are myself, Scott Paulson and Christian Hertzog. This was performed at the UCLA library as part of an all-stylophone concert organized by Scott Paulson. There are a few mistakes here and there, and the mix isn't great, but you get the idea!"

"I was commissioned to write a piece for Stylophone by Scott Paulson of UCSD to be performed as part of the Stylophone Festival he put on at the library there. I decided to write a Stylophone trio, and exploit all the various features of the instrument. The performance wasn't perfect (see video link), but I put together this recording that gets the piece across pretty clearly. The only thing I had to cheat on was the palm mutes, because I wanted to record direct instead of sticking a mic on the speaker. So I used a low pass filter in Cubase instead."

"How to sequence the Stylophone Gen X-1 using the Korg SQ-1

1) Connect the Stylophone Gen X-1 stylus pen to a lead going to one of the CV outputs on the Korg SQ-1.

2) Make sure they are earthed together through an input or output.

In this video some Teenage Engineering Pocket Operator rhythm is added to the mix. Here the PO is connected at the aux input, which is all processed by the filter and delay on the Stylophone Gen X-1"

Stylophone Gen X-1 | Portable Analog Synth | Overview + Demo

Published on Jun 10, 2019 littleBIGsynths

"Dubreq Stylophone Gen X-1 Overview & sound demo

Hey guys! I recently acquired a Stylophone Gen X-1. I've always wanted to play an original stylophone, but this newer version seems so much more flexible and "useable". With the addition of a 2 wave LFO, resonant low pass filter, envelope generator, and other synth controls, the Gen X-1 takes the Stylophone to another level. 😉 This thing totally packs a lot of synth in a small, inexpensive package."

Stylophone 305S

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.

via this auction

"First of all, it’s certainly true to say that it’s much larger than the regular Stylophone – which is, after all, about the size of an inch-and-a-half thick postcard.

The 350S is a souped-up Stylophone in every way: instead of the Stylophone’s 20 notes – an octave and a half – the 350S has 44. That’s three and a half octaves, and you can see in the picture the difference in length between the two keyboards.

Not only that, the 350S has eight voices, as opposed to one (or even the S1’s three), and some of these are themselves in different octaves.

The voices are designated ‘woodwind’, ‘brass’ and ‘strings’. In these days of sample-based synths, none of these sound terribly much like what they say they are, but they have the general qualities of these instruments – and, despite what you may read, one or two of them are quite like the distinctive tone of the regular Stylophone that we all know and love!"

You'll find additional details on the 305S at the listing or Andy Murkin's Music Electronics blog, where it appears to have been pulled from.

Stylo-101 (Stylophone+SH-101) for iOS

Another one from the makers of Advanced Mobile Drummer posted earlier today.

"I-phone 5 friendly! What do you get if you cross a Stylophone with the famous Roland SH-101? Well We have circuit-bent a virtual Stylophone and added Roland SH-101 modifications. You can create wacky and eerie sounds to meaty bass lines. As well as the Stylophone sound, you now have an extra oscillator driving a sawtooth wave with filter and resonance from the SH-101. You can adjust the mixer for each oscillator and the LFO can control oscillators and amp. We have increased the LFO speed and depth of the pitch modulation. We have also added an SH-101 style sequencer for creating bass lines or arpeggios. It is still monophonic but the notes will continue to decay if you release your finger before playing another key. You can also play over the top of the sequence while its playing.

2 oscillator monophonic synth
oscillator 1: saw, tri, square
oscillator 2: SH-101 Saw with SH-101 filter, SH-101 resonance (4 preset levels) and detune
LFO-pitch
LFO-AMP
Master Transpose
Mixer for osc1 and osc2
Arp/sequencer with tempo
Release controls notes played and sequencer
Attack controls notes only

Stylophone Model 350s

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.
via this auction
Like a reversed Atari 2600.

"For auction is a very rare Stylophone 350s. This was an early Syntesizer made in the UK. The original models were made for home use, but the 350s was DubReq's venture into a "professional" performance instrument.

It's weird, and that's good. Bands like Jon Spencer, Kraftwerk, artists like Bowie and Jack White, all used this or a version of this on recordings. Most notably, Bowie used a Stylophone in his seminal song Space Oddity.

This particular model was purchased new, however it did not include the actual box, only the styrofoam packaging. I used it a couple times several years ago, maybe a total of 3 hours, only at home and only by me.

The 350s works by using to electric styli to operate a keyboard. There is also a photo sensitive cell that works similar to a pitch bend. The unit has input and outputs and operated on 9v or an AC adaptor (both not included).

Here are the specs:" [at the bottom of this post after the pics]

Isotonik Studios spend a lot of their time figuring out what MIDI controllers work well with Ableton Live and construct custom scripts that will allow them to be used in ways that allow for excellent studio and live workflows. In this video we look at the way that new hardware can be hooked up. Using ClipEx Pro and the bindings feature, its possible to create your own complex, custom setups.
Also on show was the soon to be released set of functions including a Euclidian sequencer and control for the Akai Fire. Which is an FL Studio controller that's has been hijacked to work with live with some more clever scripting and a Max4 Live sequencer device.
Available soon via isotonikstudios.com
5. SYNTHFEST 2019 - VCVRack Updates And More To Come

Its called Tranzient and Jim gave us a look at the application in action.
