"An early morning Sunday jam, 1 take, improvised - complete with mistakes! I programmed the Tempest beat (including the simple bassline) just before I hit record.

Cowbell - tempest
Strings - Juno106 (Kiwi106 mod)
Lead - Moog Voyager
Octatrack - used as mixer for Tempest and some FX tweaking (filter, delay)

Recorded into Ableton Live as one track in 1 live take, with a tiny bit of precessing on the master bus.

I've spent years watching other people kindly share their jams and videos of synths, so thought I would start!

"My Tempest was one of the first major synths I made videos with. I feel like I have learned a lot about this beast of a synth/drum machine, and I still have so much to learn about it.

I wanted to do something different with each of these gear showcases, to show the scope of these instruments, so for this one, I gave myself the rule of no drums. I use my Tempest in 90% of my videos, and I am always crafting new, quirky drum kits, so I wanted to showcase the analog side of this awesome device. It helped me to learn more about the beast, and I think the song turned out great.

"Dubtechno session played live & recorded reel to reel, using revox b77, roland space echo re-201, Arturia DrumImpact, Behringer VC340, Sequential dsi Prophet 6, DSI Tempest, Prophet 12, vermona perfourmer mkII, elektron octatrack & Analog Rhythm, Strymon Bigsky & Timeline, Jomox T-Resonator II, livid cntrl-r, Ableton live for samples.
All the synth on the stand are going thru the mackie mixer. All the synth are midi slaves and sequenced by the Octatrack. DrumImpact patern is going thru VC340 vocoder (sequenced by OT) + Jomox T-Resonator II. To fade in or out a synth, i use the cutoff filter mostly and when the sound is almost vanished, i shut down the sequenced midi channel on the Octatrack. On the Mackie mixer are coming external auxilliar fx like Space echo, Time line & Bigsky. Each channel/synth can get the proper amount of fx i want at anytime. Also i root 3 output channels from the Tempest to the Mackie : 1 stereo & 1 mono. I can use the send fx on those channels (usually stereo is for tempest synth and mono for rhythm elements). The Mackie stereo output is going to the soundcard Input channel. Midi Clock is from SND Acme-4. Concerning Ableton, i control the mix, the send fx & mute with livid cntrl-r. I play samples (Voice & Chords from the original track)

The Octatrack is sending MIDI clock to the Tempest. Some of the Tempest are set to Voice 1 where the output goes to the Octatrack for effects (Lo-fi & Dark Reverb).

No processing except for a small amount of reverb and normalisation."

"I decided to take some old song ideas from my Dave Smith Tempest out for a spin. The reason I wanted to do a demo was I've read a lot on forums about people thinking of this box as a drum first, synth second. I have always approached my Tempest as more of a multi-timbral 6 Voice Analog Subtractive Poly approach. Yes their are a lot of drums in some of these patterns, but their's also a lot more synth sounds than most demos I see of the Tempest.

All kicks haven been recorded dry with no processing, from a single output on the Tempest. The sound design takes advantage of Tempest's DCO voice architecture and filter chip."
