OSK - Offener Schaltkreis (Open Circuit), Responsive Sound Environment 2007

YouTube via MediaArtTube | December 26, 2010 |

"A silent labyrinth created out of open copper trails on the floor carries the electrical signals of a multichannel sound repository. By putting wireless speaker- cylinders on them, the carried sound layers can become audible and the interpretation by the visitors gets possible. The "Offener Schaltkreis" reacts depending on the manner in which the speakers are used: If nothing is moved, the sounds stay calm and soft, but as soon as a single cylinder is placed elsewhere, the sounds of all speakers intensify simultaneously. This results in a dynamic relation between silence and noise, which is influenced by the visitors.

200e Blinky Darkly

"Used up all my banana cables patching this.

Self indulgent 200e with Slim Phatty drone.

Pretty lights made into spotlights in After Effects. I have an idea to make a fake stage show out of a nice blinky patch."

Xmas Present Jam - Monotron vs. UCreate Music

YouTube via ChrisLody | December 26, 2010 |

"My wife Esme was especially nice to me this year and bought me plenty of music making toys including the Monotron and the UCreate Music in this video.

There is plenty of info around on the Monotron but i'd never even heard of the UCreate Music before. Its a pretty cool toy, amazingly you can feed external audio though its effects section. I'm using its Echo (Delay) on the Monoton in this video. You can also sequence a number of loops using the buttons on its front panel. It updateable and editable by connecting it to your computer via USB, but frustratingly you can only use the loops it wants you to rather than your own and uploading loops to it has to be done online as it grabs the audio loops from a specific web page. It looks like the effects can be altered aswell but there are no extra ones available yet. Someone NEEDS to hack this thing!

Anyway the wonkiness of the track represents the way i feel in the post over consumption phase of the xmas holidays. Probably."

"'Make it talk!' Well, sort of. It looks like a musical note - with a mouth and eyes. You play it by pressing the ribbon controller on it's "tail" and then pressing the "cheeks" to open and close it's rubber mouth."

DOEPFER DARK TIME - ANALOG SEQUENCER - HQ DEMO with ARP Odyssey, Minimoog, Korg MS-20, Korg Monopoly

YouTube via AnalogAudio1 | December 25, 2010 |

"The brandnew DARK TIME is a fantastic analog sequencer. It has MIDI, CV / Gate and also TRIGGER IN / OUT for vintage sequencers or rhythm machines.

In my opinion, it is much more comfortable like the Korg SQ-10, which I had. The steps run not just forwards - they also can run backwards or in random. Also a great feature is the quantizer - like on the ARP sequencer. In MIDI mode, the two rows can send at two different MIDI channels.

The DOEPFER DARK TIME was originally designed to be used with the DOEPFER DARK ENERGY synth, but you can use it with every synthesizer which has MIDI or CV/GATE. Sometimes (it depends on your synth) you will need a converter or a additional interface (for example: ARP needs +12 volts to trigger the envelopes instead of +5V; Also the Minimoog needs a switch trigger).

I always wanted a sequencer like this!

I played the Doepfer DARK TIME with ARP ODYSSEY, MINIMOOG, KORG MS-20, KORG MONO/POLY and YAMAHA TQ-5. There is also a sequence, where the Dark Time is synced with a Roland CR-78 (through trigger signals, not MIDI) and controls an ARP Odyssey at the same time."

Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays!

Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays everyone! This year it appears the iPad was front and center for me. I thought I'd feature some of the apps sent my way this year as a thank you to the developers. There were also a few hardware items this year including a prototype of The Missing Link, the SuONOIO, the Line 6 Midi Mobilizer, a Bleep Labs Thingamagoop2, Madrona Labs Aalto, some Audio Damage plug-ins, and Gold Baby Sample sets. BTW, if I missed you let me know!

The following are links to the manufacturer websites where you can find more info on every item featured. Be sure to see below for more pics. I wanted to capture every app listed. The pics emphasize how the iPad and iPhone become the app. Be sure to see the holidays label for more holiday posts. Have a great day!
