EMS Sequencer 256 & VC3S in 1978 Film "The Shout

The sound alchemist (from "The Shout" by Jerzy Skolimowski, 1978)

Uploaded on Oct 5, 2011 freakedeliqueful - EMS at 1:01, Roland RE-301 through 3:01 (how coincidental) :).

@frozenreeds sent in the pics with the following.

"John Hurt indulging in some really nice vintage synth/concrète action in Jerzy Skolimowski's 'The Shout'."

The EMS Sequencer 256 used in the film went up for auction back in May of 2011 here. The film and EMS sighting was first mentioned in this post back in 2006. I did a quick search on YouTube and managed to find the video above.

EMS Sequencer 256 left.

Pin matrix for the EMS VC3S aka "The Putney", angled tabletop version of the SYNTHI, below.

Awesome bit of sound design in this portion of the film.  I'm curious how much was recorded during the scene vs. afterwards.

The film is available on Amazon.

Really Nice Audio - RNA Replicator, dualHMVCO1a & CV Mixers Eurorack Modules

The RNA Replicator - x8 CV Buffer Eurorack Module

Published on Feb 10, 2015

"Replicating the Replicator"

It looks like we have a new modular DIY maker. Really Nice Audio or RNA for short currently has three modules listed on their site, the replicator x8 CV Buffer (video above), the dualHMVCO1a VCO, and CV Mixers based on an adaptation of Ray Wilson's MFOS design.  Details on each captured for the archives below. They also do DIY synth mods and repair including work on the Yamaha DX-7, Korg Poly-61, Korg Monotribe, Oberheim DMX, and OSCar.

"This versatile CV Buffer features 8 buffered outputs as well as 2 buffered inverted outputs.

The toggle switch inverts the voltage to the bottom 4 outputs.
2 bi-polar LEDs show the voltage polarity for each bank of 4 outputs.

It can also be used as a 2 x 4 channel buffer as inserting a signal into the IN2 socket overrides the bottom 4 outputs.

Comes with eurorack ribbon power cable and 2x 3mm screws."

"With 2 boards I claim 4 oscillators!!"

CV Mixers

"This CV Mixer system is an adaptation of Ray Wilson’s design found in his Multi-Function module from the essential MFOS website. I wanted to make a modular design with minimal wiring. All pots are soldered to the PCB whilst the sockets connect to a 5 pin single row IDC. This way you can use ‘each side’ of a 10 pin IDC to connect 2 mixers at a time to your socket panel. I made a socket panel which has 2 x 10 pin IDC connectors so 4 mixers can be connected. Built into my socket panel is a Common Input which buffers this signal each of the 4 CV 1 inputs. Inserting a plug into a CV1 input socket breaks the buffered signal.

This system I built for my 4x HMVCO1a so I have wired each mixer output to its corresponding oscillator via the ‘normalled’ pin each CV input socket.

Each CV Mixer gives you :

A coarse voltage bias

A fine voltage bias

3x CV inputs with attenuators

A bi-polar LED indicator showing polarity of voltage"

sound source is Sputnik Oscillator into Sputnik Quad VCF/VCA being "sequenced" by the West Coast Random. The same gate the clocks the quantized random voltages in the West Coast Random is pinging the Quad VCF/VCA"

3. even more sputnik delay - "more patching between the Sputnik modular west coast random, oscillator, quad vcf/vca, tap delay/dual crossfader"

Sputnik West Coast Random Generator examples

Published on Feb 10, 2015 bigcitymusic

"This is our first power up of this module and it is awesome! Video and patch notes below.
Here’s a quick test & overview of the Stored Random, Fluctuating Random and Quantized Random sections of the Sputnik West Coast Random Source.

00:00 - Stored Random Voltages section
01:10 - Fluctuating Random Voltages section
02:00 - Quantized Random Voltages section
02:27 - Lot’s’o Modulation with Intellijel Shapeshifter

00:00
Stored Random Voltages:
Pulse input generates random voltage
1st output covers 0-5V range
2nd output is voltage controlled and knob alters the distribution of voltages

Patch notes: End of envelope into Pulse input. 1st output into opens and closes VCA/VCF. 2nd output is modulating the Shape parameter of the Shapeshifter. Various color noise from the West Coast Random Generator is plugged into the Stored Random CV input.

01:10
Fluctuating Random Voltages:
Two sections for creating a fluctuating voltage
CV input and control over a bandwidth of .05hz to 50khz

Patch notes: 1st output is modulating the Shape 1 and 2 parameter of the Shapeshifter. 2nd output is modulating the Korgasmatron Filters A & B cutoff frequency.
ADSR 1 into Fluctuating Random Voltage input 2 CV, and an ADSR 2 into Fluctuating Random Voltage input 2 CV.

02:00
Quantized Random Voltages:
Pulse input for generating 1v/oct quantized random voltage
CV input and knob for controlling distribution of random voltages
Two different algorithmic outputs:
“N+1 states” and “2N states“. N is an integer number in the range 1…6 that can be adjusted with the manual control (Man N) and an external control voltage CVN with attenuator. Whenever the rising edge of the input clock signal (Clk In) appears a new random voltage is generated at the N+1 resp. 2N output. The N+1 output is capable to generate N+1 different voltage levels (or states), the 2N output up to 2Ndifferent states. If for example N is set to 4 the N+1 output generates up to 5, the 2N output 16 different states. The voltage steps of the 2N output are adjusted to 1/12 V in the factory.

Patch notes: 1st output is controlling the Pitch of Shapeshifter oscillator 1. 2nd output is controlling the Shapeshifter ratio."
