Full Analog Signal Path Drum 'n Bass Vinyl

Full Analog Signal Path Drum 'n Bass Vinyl from K X on Vimeo.

"This video shows the journey from start to finish of creating a drum 'n bass track with a 100% analog signal path from the synthesizers creating the music in real time, being recorded to open reel tape, mastering the tape with outboard analog equipment, and finally cutting the tape directly to vinyl.

The audio of this track can be found at https://kxnz.bandcamp.com/track/analog-drum-n-bass

The gear used in the synthesizer studio included:

Modulars : Roland System 700 (Drums), Moog series 900 (minor chords), Roland System 100 (sub basses, wind sfx, sirens), Arp 2500 (squelchy stabs), Buchla 100 series (SFX)

Other Synths : modified x0xb0x (low bass) Korg MS-20 (other bass), Roland System 100 standalone synth (other bass), modified Korg Monotron Duo (other bass)

FX : Roland Space Echo RE-501 (tape delay, chorus, spring reverb), Roland DC-30 (analog chorus-echo), Roland Dimension-D Analog Chorus

Mixer : Tascam M308b

The mixed signal was recorded in a separate studio using a Studer mixer and tape machine. The premaster was then brought to a third studio where the tape was mastered using the following gear.

Studer A812 tape machines
ORAM BEQ Pro 24 mixing console
API 550b EQ
Tube-Tech CL 1b compressor
Universal Audio Urei 1176Ln limiting amplifier
Amek limiter
Emt140 plate reverb

The master was then brought to a forth studio where it was run from tape through a few more pieces of outboard gear to finalize the signal and cut directly to a 12" vinyl record.

This video was taken with a cell-phone camera at the various locations and the audio for the video was recorded and limited in a digital audio workstation in parallel to the analog signal flow.

Big thanks to the Tokyo University of the Arts for facilitating the creation of this track, and to James at www.inreallife.co.nz for cutting the vinyl record."

Synthi S&H Patch

"Having some fun with a sample and hold path. I recently modified my Synthi with a sample & hold kit from Papz @ http://users.edpnet.be/papa/synthimods/ I recommend this mod, its easy to fit and opens the Synthi up quite a lot. My Synthi also has a filter unslew mod. The recording is just the naked Synthi, no external effects. I'll upload better audio on my soundcloud page. https://soundcloud.com/dan_p"

Moog Music Sells Half the Company to its Employees

via The New York Times:

"At the Moog synthesizer factory in Asheville, N.C., on Tuesday, Michael Adams, the company’s owner and chief executive, wanted to share some life-changing news with the entire staff.

'I’ve sold half the company,' he told them.

Anxious silence descended among the tight-knit group, many of whom feel a familial loyalty to the business, which has been likened to Willy Wonka’s factory for electronic musicians.

Then Mr. Adams revealed the buyer.

'I sold it to you,' he said, to a relieved wave of whoops, applause and happy tears, according to employees present.

Siobhan Robinson, a production scheduler who started as an office manager 10 years ago, could only talk through her sniffles and giddy laughs. 'This provides for my family; this is all we have,' she said."

Custom Wood MIDI Keyboard 25 Key 4U Rackmount Case

"What we have here is a one of a kind 25 key MIDI controller built into a nice custom wooden case that's meant to be used with any desktop rackmounted synthesizer modules or similar device. The rack is 4U in size and can accommodate most rackmount desktop synthesizers out there including:

Nord Lead 1, 2, 2X, 3, 4 Rack (Nord Lead 1 pictured but not included)
Nord Modular G1, G2
Access Virus Classic, B, C, TI
Roland M1 Rack
Korg MS 20 Rack
Dave Smith Prophet 8 Rack
Elektron A4
Elektron Monomachine
Elektron Octatrack
Future Retro XS
Moog Minitaur
Moog Slim Phatty

and many many more!

You could even mount a 3U Eurorack rig into the case with a MIDI>CV module and have one killer portable Eurorack system (and enough for a space of 1U modules left over)! The case is pretty deep inside and should accommodate most modules.

The keyboard controller inside the unit is an Alesis Q25 and features both pitch bend and modulation wheels as well as octave up/down buttons. The back of the keyboard can be accessed from the rear of the case and includes a USB port, MIDI out jack, and power supply jack.

This is the perfect thing for a musician with lots of rack gear but little way to use them in a live situation or while outside the studio. Very nice build and a great keyboard to boot, just pop in a synthesizer module and go!

You can power the keyboard using USB or AC power. Auction includes USB cable and AC power adapter (the power adapter does not work however and is only included as a reference so you can buy the correct power adapter)."
