xi lang Version 3 Released

"ixi lang take on Steve Reich's Piano Phase"

via ixi audio: "The ixi lang is a musical system aiming to make live coding available and understandable to all. Live coding represents the latest, and cutting-edge, development in computer music. Conferences, journals and festivals have picked up on this new style of musical performance and dedicated space for it (e.g., International Computer Music Conference, New Interfaces for Musical Expression, Computer Music Journal, etc.). A specific website and mailing list exists here: http://www.toplap.org

The core idea in ixi lang is to represent events in a spatial layout, thus merging musical code and musical scores in a real-time musical improvisation context. Kids should be able to use the system and grandparents should understand it. The ixi lang can be downloaded here (free and open source), and a paper presented at International Computer Music Conference is here [PDF].

Perhaps a good way to understand the system is to look at some videos here, some by Julio d'Escrivan here, and the following two videos.

How to hook up with Ableton Live using ixi lang as a master MIDI clock:

YouTube Uploaded by randomjules on Aug 25, 2011

"first live coding steps using IXI lang to drive Ableton LIVE so you can sync to loops... essentially just wanted to show that it is possible and easy, then the challenge is trying to modify your patterns so they will groove with the loops... this is not that easy (hehe) but I thought I'd just mess about a bit to encourage myself and others to do the same. Thank you Thor!"

"And Ash Sagar recently performed with ixi lang in York:"

"The classic E-mu Emulator, a fantastic-sounding early sampler from the early 1980s. Its "grainy" choir sound was one of my favorite sounds growing up as a young keyboardist in the '80s."

Brian Eno Plays Synthesizers

Normally I stick to synths for posts, but I thought I'd make an exception on this one. Not simply because it's Brian Eno, but because of what he says regarding playing with Roxy Music. It's subtle but it is there and it really stands out when you think about it. He doesn't say he played "keyboards." He says he played "synthesizers." A true synthesist.

SN OI01046

"You can download the pdf user manual here. It has Midi In, Out & Thru. It has 8 digital tone generators, and can play 16 notes at a time. Each tone generator has 6 operators. These FM operators can be arranged in one of 32 different ways. (Called FM algorithms.) Each operator gets its own ADSR Envelope. To make programming easier, a computer software graphical editor can be used. The TX-802 works fine with a free java application called JsynthLib, even on 64 bit Windows7. You can download it here: http://www.jsynthlib.org/"

AngryOctopus WebotronFM - Online Java Based Monotron

via AngryOctopus
"I love the new Monotrons from Korg, I was considering attempting digital versions but thought it would be much more fun to come up with my own design. I decided to go for something that would make more sense digitally and so FM seemed the logical choice. I went for buttons rather than the usual ribbon controller which would probably make a physical version too expensive but is much easier to play."

Give it a try via the link above.

Vintage Korg 770 with Original KORG Dust Cover

via this auction

"It is kind of the big brother to the Korg MS-20. It features several unusual features, including: scale noise, external audio processing, traveler control of filters (HP/LP w/ res), and much more. It also includes the beige vinyl cover for it (which it must have sat under, protected, for some time). This piece looks like it came straight out of a time capsule!"

Skyrim Main Theme on Eurorack Modular Synthesizer

YouTube Uploaded by crudface on Nov 11, 2011

"Let's do this."

Impressive. The Elder Scrolls Skyrim. On a personal, non-synth note, the Elder Scrolls series are my absolute favorite RPGs, followed by Sir-Tech's Wizardry (I actually played Lord Foul's Bane on an Apple II plus), followed by Might and Magic. Regarding the Elder Scrolls series, I started with Daggerfall and played every game since, finishing all but Daggerfall. Daggerfall was so huge (and I was new to the platform) I ended up getting lost in side quests. They are incredibly open universe games. Massive, beautiful and emmersive. Unfortunately my XBox 360 got the ring of death a second time, AFTER being sent in to Microsoft for the fix. I tried the DIY heatsink compound fix and it died a week later. I no longer have time for gaming with MATRIXSYNTH, but this is the one game that makes me want to pick up a new PlayStation 3.

Back to synths...

Midisyncer - Boston Music Hack Day project

YouTube Uploaded by syntheticbits on Nov 8, 2011

"Demonstration of my hack from Boston Music Hack Day, held Nov 5-6 2011 at Microsoft NERD in Cambridge, MA. The project was an iOS app that lets you sync a drum machine or groovebox to a song on your iPhone/iPod. It uses Echo Nest song analysis data to get the beat patterns of the song you pick, then uses iOS CoreMIDI to send out a MIDI clock based on that pattern that can be synced to."

Synth Trivia: syntheticbits is the man behind Funk Box and Little MIDI Machine for iOS.

BI created a Synth Trivia label starting with this point. Not sure if it will go anywhere, but there it is. If you catch any posts, old or new, that you think should get the label feel free to comment in that post or shoot me an email.
