"Part 2 of a post about making generative music with Cellular Automata (CA) sequences with the Roland MC4 sequencer. With well known works from composers such as Vince Clarke & Aphex Twin the musical applications of the MC4 cover a lot of ground. Over the years I've been playing around with different ways of working with this box since I got my first one in 1997, and I started integrating it with my algorithmic / generative composition processes."

"If one cuts the Borromean rings, one obtains one iteration of the standard braid; conversely, if one ties together the ends of (one iteration of) a standard braid, one obtains the Borromean rings. Just as removing one Borromean ring unlinks the remaining two, removing one strand of the standard braid unbraids the other two.

But who cares, lets enjoy some music. Thanks for watching/listening everyone!

Boss DR-110 Dr. Rhythm Graphic Drum Machine with Original Case

"Dr. Rhythm Graphic (DR-110) offers a wide selection of sounds, preset patterns, a large number of programmable patterns, and the ability to chain patterns together to form songs. The simple step programming is aided by an LCD grid showing the individual notes in the current pattern. In addition to step programming there is also a "tap write" programming mode.

This instrument is powered by a 9v adaptor (not included) or four AA batteries (also not included). The original manual can be download here.

The sounds are Kick, Snare, Closed Hi-Hat, Open Hi-Hat, Cymbal and Clap. The sounds are totally analog, and sound crisp and punchy, thanks to tone generation circuitry. A balance knob alters the level of the Kick, Snare and Clap relative to the other sounds, while an accent knob controls the amount of emphasis applied to accented steps. There is also a volume knob, which controls the overall level of both the main and headphone outputs. The main output is mono, but has an unusual feature whereby plugging in a suitable wired lead with a stereo jack plug allows for the feeding in of another signal to be mixed with the drum sounds. Another socket provides for a trigger signal, emitting a pulse for every accented step in a pattern.

The patterns are organized into four banks of eight patterns each. Banks C and D are the presets, while banks A and B are programmable. Each pattern can be switched between 12 or 16 steps, for a 3/4 or 4/4 time signature. Two songs can be programmed, each containing a maximum of 128 bars."

[XOR] is a logical statement but also bit operator which is sort of combination of & [AND] and | [OR] . By applying this modulation to the classical wavetables you can achieve very interesting harmonics added to the sound. Especially when more voices mix than it comes to really interesting dirty digital modulation artefacts. ^ [XOR] is intended to be used as a sound module for a MIDI keyboard and it doesn't produce any sound without the keyboard. It needs MIDI Bastl to interface the MIDI jack.

Features

6 voice polyphony
wavetable based - sine, saw, triangle, digi-noise
played ONLY by MIDI using MIDI Bastl
^[xor], &[and], [or] modulation
arpeggiator – gate and note modes, different shapes, adjustable speed, MIDI clock sync
8 different sound settings in one preset
6 presets

"Up for sale, a beautiful Minimoog model D from 1974. This is a 40 year old machine in "like new" condition. Fully refurbished a few years ago. Very clean panel, labels, keys, knobs and switches. Amazing woodwork, looks much better in real life than in photos.

This is an old oscillator version, needs some time to warm up, tunes well, sounds big and fat. No scratchy pots, no background noise or hum.

The pitch bend wheel has no spring (does not return to centre position like on most contemporary synths) and sometimes it detunes a little when in the centre. I don't know if thats normal for every Mini (never played another one) or if this is a mechanical problem or electrical (potentiometer??)..."

monome white whale brings the monome to modular

via monome

"we’re bringing the grid to the modular synth.

no computers to mediate. no complicated setup. plug into a front-mount usb jack and it’s ready to go. a new form of gesture, live performance, and deep data is now possible within this intuitive and expansive system.

we’re happy to announce white whale, the first in a series.

white whale
grid-enabled live probabilistic step sequencer

september 2014

retail price: $280
requirements: monome grid controller (see note below *)
format: eurorack
width: 6hp
depth: 40mm (“skiff friendly”)
power: 12v: 18ma, -12v: 17ma, 5v: 42ma (grid unconnected), up to 600ma (grid connected, see note below **)

white whale is the culmination of methods and experiments based on a decade of step sequencer design for the grid.

a monome grid is plugged into the front panel of the module, serving as a complete interface. the sequencer continues running when the grid is disconnected, facilitating both live performance and precomposed playback of generative systems.

a sixteen step loop is the foundation. 4 triggers can be toggled per step, along with two separate cv values. 0-10v cv can be dialed via a parameter knob, copied from other steps, and tuned up and down via the grid. a cv map mode is provided for creating scales, and preset scales are recallable.

a probability index is provided independently for the triggers and each cv channel. these can serve as step mutes (at 0 or 100 percent) or chance possibility per step (for fills, emergent melody generation, etc). each cv step can be set to have a choice of several values.

sixteen patterns are quickly accessible. for longer sequences these patterns can be strung together in any determined order, including chance possibilities between pattern selection.

sets of patterns are storable to internal flash memory for instant recall on power-up.

timing can be internal (controlled via a panel pot) or externally triggered. loop lengths and positions can be set intuitively on the grid.

many subtle additional features make this instrument incredibly versatile yet approachable, introducing possibilities far beyond the standard step sequencer."

ROLAND UNVEILS SBX-1 SYNC BOX

"Universal Communication Hub for MIDI Instruments, Computers, and Vintage Synths and Drum Machines

SBX-1 Sync Box Los Angeles, CA, September 1, 2014 — Roland is proud to announce the SBX-1 Sync Box, a universal synchronization hub for electronic musical instruments and computers. Equipped with USB-MIDI, standard MIDI, and DIN sync ports, the compact SBX‑1 provides a convenient way for music creators to use modern production tools and legacy analog devices together at one time. Going far beyond simple synchronization, the SBX-1 also provides hands-on control of timing and groove, and includes CV/Gate outputs for triggering old-school instruments such as the SH-101, TB-303, and TR-808.

With support for a vast array of past and present devices, the SBX-1 lets computers and electronic instruments from different eras seamlessly communicate and synchronize with each other. Users can easily add analog and modular synthesizers to a computer-based production environment, or design totally new and innovative live-performance setups combining Roland AIRA gear like the TR-8, TB-3, and SYSTEM-1 with vintage rhythm boxes and synths.

The SBX-1 provides USB, DIN Sync, and MIDI I/O, and any connected device can be the master clock source. The SBX-1 itself can also be the timing master, allowing control of external devices with a rock-steady modern clock. Tempo and Fine knobs plus a Tap button offer deep control of the overall groove, letting users freely adjust timing to sync up with DJs or other performers in a band.

Also included in the SBX-1 is a Shuffle function for adding variable swing to patterns generated by external sequencers and rhythm machines. This is extremely useful for working with instruments like the vintage TR-808 and TB-303, which are not equipped with onboard shuffle capability. Users can choose between 16th-note and 8th-note swing, and are able to correct timing errors on the fly with the quick-access Sync button.

With its four CV/Gate output jacks, the SBX-1 also provides the ability to control analog and modular synths with MIDI data from an external device or computer. Incoming MIDI notes and CC messages are converted and output as CV/Gate information, opening up a world of creative possibilities for fans of classic electronic instruments. In addition to external data conversion, the SBX-1 can internally generate gate trigger signals from quarter notes to 32nd notes, including triplets and dotted 8th notes.

The SBX-1 is capable of generating LFO signals that are synced to either the internal clock or an external source. Users are able to register up to five types of LFO settings and output them as CV signals simultaneously from three channels.

The CV/Gate section on the SBX-1 also features an Aux jack that has been specially optimized for the TR-8 Rhythm Performer. This dramatically speeds up performance workflow, allowing users to check values on the SBX-1’s display as they set up a TR-8 tone for gate triggering."
