Sequence

Published on Jul 23, 2016 100 Things I Do

"A Sunday morning noodle, on a dual sequence. My Home made VCS3 (really need to make a proper cabinet for it), Dave Smith Instruments Pro 2 , Roland TB 3 and The Access Virus Indigo. There is a little bit of digital clipping in the mix at one point as everything was recorded as you see it and I didn't notice until mix down. Hope you enjoy."

"When someone gifts you a whole load of new patch cables, it's surely rude not to dedicate a new patch to them. So this one's going out to the generous Mark Lyken

Technical details: This is made with my slowly developing Verbos Electronics modular system with support from a Doepfer A-149-1 and Make Noise Maths. These will hopefully sooner or later be replaced with a Verbos Random Sampling and Multi-Envelope. (I'm pretty certain as soon as this video goes viral another Mark will be gifting me the aforementioned modules ;-) ).

No effects and direct to firewire interface. I've also kept the camera microphone audio on because it adds a little live vibe and an opportune title."

"This in an original OBxa 8 voice, 120 program in fully functional condition. The synth is clean, fully intact, all 8 voices work and are very stable, and all knobs controls and jacks are working as they should. It looks great in the studio!

The OBXA has been serviced with a rebuilt power supply (more robust than stock) new key bushings for a beautiful key action, polished jwire system so all keys trigger w/o issues, and plenty of fresh capacitors and IC's were installed as preventative maintenance. A new battery and the factory patches were also installed recently..."

"This is Revision 4 with CEM3340 VCOs and CEM3360 VCAs. VCF is Roland IR3109.

Full working condition, including the infamous backlight. Cosmetically 8 out of 10 - the front panel has a couple very minor nicks (mostly on the top edge), the top cover has some scratches from racking and unracking.

When I bought the synth just over two years ago, the following work was done:
The backlight circuit was rebuilt with a new high-voltage transformer and new transistors.
New electroluminescent strip was installed behind the display.
Brand new Panasonic filter capacitors were installed in the power supply.
All connectors were cleaned and reseated.
Voice boards were checked for issues and adjusted against the service manual.
The AC inlet socket was replaced with a standard 3-prong IEC socket.
Assigner board ROM v4.0 and voice board ROMs v2.0 were installed.
The two faders and the Tuning pot were cleaned."

X1L3 - circuit bent Casio PT-80 with midi retrofit + eurorack - The trip

Published on Jul 23, 2016 manufacturedZ3R0

"Casiotone trance.

Audio is slightly out of sync with the video, but the sun will still rise in the morning.

Playing the Pt-80 via midi from reason. Under pinned with a 4/4 sequence. An A/R generator is being triggered on 16th notes on my eurorack, also via midi. The attack/release is connected to the CV input on the casio, spiking the filter cutoff with a short envelope for the first and final sections of the vid. The envelope is turned off on the breakdown (0.50 - 1.22) allowing the filter cutoff to flat line and follow only the cutoff knob manually.

Additional tronix:

XILE Midi retrofit on channel 15
PT2399 delay
Steiner synthacon resonant filter
Front mounted led array (midi activity indicator)
Regulated internal psu board

Raw bends:

Pitch control
Kick mute
Snare mute
Hi hat mute
Chord mute
Lead boost
Drum boost
Drum/lead combined distortion - merges the two in a dirty sort of way

Altered State of Being ( Version 2 )

Published on Jul 23, 2016 Todd Smith

"In this jam I take my previous track and add more drums and synth variation. My new Korg Volca rack appears thanks to Mike Smith, his racks are top notch and make the whole song creation process so much better, I'll put a link below to his store page !! I added 2 patterns to the Teenage Engineering PO-12 chain, total of 4 patterns running in a 8 pattern chain. The Arturia Microbrute adds a sequenced sub bass while the Roland Boutique JP-08 adds a guitar type sequence. The Korg Volca keys is used for a backing sequence but I kinda opened the filter a little to much during the jam. It sounds great at lower filter ranges but doesn't fit in well with a open filer, lesson learned. The Roland Boutique JU-06, Korg Volca Bass and Microkorg all take on the same roles as my previous jam.

RIP Ray Wilson

Hi everyone. I have some incredibly sad news in today. Ray Wilson of Music From Outer Space passed away on Thursday, July 21. As many knew, he was battling stage 4 cancer. His family's GoFundMe page is still up and has not yet reached their goal. His family will likely have bills, so if you'd like to contribute something, please do. For those that would like to donate to Ray's family directly via Paypal, I am told his Paypal address is info@musicfromouterspace.com.

Regular readers of MATRIXSYNTH will surely know who Ray Wilson is. For anyone that doesn't, Ray was the man behind the synth DIY site Music From Outer Space. The domain name was registered back in Nov 2003; I'm not sure when the site went live, but there is an archive of the site from the WayBackMachine dated Jan 15, 2004.

Ray's contributions through his website and his YouTube channel have influenced synth DIY hobbyists and budding new makers and manufacturers alike over the years. Many owe him for their start in the world of synth DIY. You can see the exhaustive list of his DIY projects on his site here. His most popular project of course was the MFOS Soundlab Mini-Synth. His work has contributed to more than 590 posts here on MATRIXSYNTH. I'm sure there will be more to come. The first time MFOS was featured on MATRIXSYNTH was back on August 30, 2005, just over a month after I launched MATRIXSYNTH.

Ray Wilson was also the author of Make: Analog Synthesizers.

Something you may not have known is that he was also an amateur standup comedian, and he shared his performances on his main YouTube channel. As you know, I started MATRIXSYNTH back in 2005, Just over a year after MFOS launched. The first time I saw one of Ray Wilson's standup shows I thought I was on the wrong channel! :) When I realized it was him, it of course brought a smile to my face. The first thought that came to my mind was, wow, this is a truly genuine human being. The following is the last standup performance shared on his channel, from August, 2014:

The Ray Wilson Show August 26th 2014

Published on Aug 26, 2014 Ray Wilson

"AMATEUR DOING STANDUP - NOT SYNTH RELATED AT ALL. This is actually sit down comedy. I don't include profanity in my bits because I'm no good at it. If you want to be the Chopped Champ don't miss this episode. If you know someone else that might get a smile out of this I definitely appreciate shares."

Quincas Moreira, who also does synth DIY work, was a friend of Ray's. Together they composed the following piece. Update via Quincas:: "That's Ray singing. It's his song, lyrics, melody and harmony. He'd done a previous version but I thought the song was so awesome it deserved to be properly produced, so I got him to send me the original session and recorded real drums, bass, piano, percussion and backing vocals."

"Quincas Moreira and Ray Wilson collaboration - Are We Waves... Physicists are still working out our true physical nature - currently confusion reigns."

"He'll finally find out if we are waves or particles. Rest in peace my friend."

The following is the last video on Ray Wilson's YouTube channel. He will be missed.

Then the six audio channels mixed in Rxmx wich is sending channel A to left side, B to mono and C to right side.

"This Moog Rogue comes from a private collection of highly acclaimed NYC- based producers Sweet Rains.
100% working condition , with original manual ( hard to find these days) and incredible full blown fat real analog MOOG sound, mostly famous for its juicy leads and HUGE basses. All latest Moog models don't come even close to that sound quality and fatness. The unit has a very early serial number ( shown on pics) , and extremely nice cosmetic condition , as it was only used in the studio . All pots work fine , one slide cap slightly differs in color , please see it on the pic , but it's hardly noticeable. All keys are in like-new condition , respond well and equal in action . It's really difficult to find this unit in such conditions these days , considering its age.
Power supply has been replaced with the better one from Armin's shop . I quote the one and only Paul T. Schreiber: "Focusing on the engineering side of this: a) a power supply 'rating' of current is usually given as 80% load at 25C. For example, a 100ma rating means it will really give 80ma at 25C, and at any higher temperature, the current starts dropping (so maybe 65ma at 40C). So, WFT does '100ma' enter into it if really 80ma is the "reality". For international buyers: this is a US- standards power supply, you might need to get a transformer to make it work in EU ."
