Synth Expo organizers launch Synthesthesia 2020, a Metaphysical Synth Experience

"The organizers of the Synth Expo are excited to announce Synthesthesia 2020, their first online event entirely focused on synthesizers! The event is scheduled for Sunday October 4th from 2pm until 10pm and will be free with RSVP.

Since 2014, the Synth Expos have become an unmissable real-life appointment for all the synth lovers in several North American cities (including NYC, LA, Toronto, Austin and Montreal) to get a chance to try the new synths released by large manufacturers and discover new devices by boutique and modular builders.

This year, after launching a very well attended event in Portland, OR, the organizers had to cancel all the following scheduled shows due to the pandemic. Synthesthesia 2020 will be an opportunity to catch up with the industry through live streams with product specialists, product launches, Q&A with experts, and performances, and also to buy new synths at a discount through special promotions via sales partners American Musical Supply and Synth City.

If you are interested in attending, you can RSVP for free here:

Random Voltage to Buchla Oscillators

"Today's question: What if I send the exact same random voltage to different oscillators in the Buchla domain. Will they all respond the same?"

Sound of: Arturia PolyBrute ( Polyphonic Analog Synth )

Click here for additional PolyBrute posts.

"Hello,
Happy to share this one with you ❤
I m lucky enough to be part of the sound designer team for the Arturia PolyBrute, here is a walkthrough demo of some Presets I m working on(I'm also working on official demos for Arturia which will be much more complete) .
On this demo I didn t add any effects except a very little Mastering ( Little compressor and Limiter) so all the effects you can hear come from the synth. It s better if you listen to this demo with good Speakers with Sub or good Headphone especially the bass presets.
I didn t shoot too close because this version is a pre Factory version and some typography are not exactly the same on the final version.
You have to know that is a demo of my sounds , it didn 't cover at all all the possibility of the Synthesizer and also I m not a "real Keyboard Player".
Few info about the PolyBrute: It s a 6 Full Voice Analog Polyphonic Synth with 2 filter/voice , Morphing possibility and lot of nice controller option ( like the Morphee , the Ribbon and a pressure-sensitive Keyboard ) and 3 digital effects.
I really love to use this synth, it's really inspiring.

Digital Waveform User Oscillator for Korg Minilogue XD, Prologue and NTS-1

Tim Shoebridge

"I am very pleased to be able to present in this video my latest user oscillator for the Prologue, Minilogue XD and NTS-1. For me this oscillator is very much a trip down memory lane and an attempt to recreate some of the amazing sounds from one particular poly synth released by Korg way back in 1985.

To purchase and download this user oscillator, please go to my SoundMangling website at the following link: https://www.soundmangling.com/2020/09..."

Mortuary (John Cacavas Tribute) by Everett Dudgeon (Prophet X)

EverettDudgeon138

"John Cacavas is one of the best composers in horror that has sadly been ignored. His iconic whistle oriented score for the awesome Horror Express still sends shivers down my spine. Other works include The Satanic Rites Of Dracula and Kojak.

I was going through a bunch of unreleased horror soundtracks and when I came across Mortuary I couldn't believe that John Cacavas was the composer. Luckily my Prophet X was next to me and I felt inspired.

The Prophet X is doing everything here. The upright piano, some bowed tonal percussion, suspenseful orchestral strings and some 12 String guitar hits.)

Enjoy!"

New Baloran Synth In The Works - Coming to SynthFest 2021

Un peu de son du nouveau projet

Laurent Baloran

"Retour du bac à sable dans le studio pour valider quelques options et une bonne occasion de vous présentez un peu de son ;)"

Googlish:

"Back from the sandbox to the studio to validate some options and a good opportunity to introduce yourself to some sound;)"

From the comments: "That’s definitely not a soft synth. Sounds „oberheimisch“ with highpass filter, also wave table and FM ?? Interesting!!" to which Laurent replied: "Thanks, I love your words ;)" He later states: "Thanks, I can't dwell on tech too much but it's not strictly speaking a wavefolder;)" and "No more precise information before SynthFest 2021, you will have to be there;) And thank you very much for your words."

Curious if that circuit board to the left is it.

Update on the board from Laurent: "Thank you, yes, it's horror in the foreground. It's not a prototype, but rather a sandbox to test/validate my ideas and schematics. How it works, it's half a voice card. I should go to V2, a real voice card prototype, pretty quickly now. The control panel is virtual, developed under JUCE, but very similar to what the physical panel will be. This allowed me to validate the ergonomic ideas."

Noise Engineering Blog: Supersync patch with LIP

Noise Engineering

"From the blog: https://www.noiseengineering.us/blog/...
Even with alllll the different types of synthesis and sound generation techniques there are today, I always fall back on dual-saw sync basses as a bit of a staple. And wouldn’t you know it, LIP can make a pretty solid emulation of one! This one’s easy to patch up; we don’t even have to tune it too carefully. Just follow the patch shown in the blog post linked above, and then adjust Oscillator B’s pitch to taste. A lot of the tone comes from the relationship between oscillator B’s pitch relative to oscillator A, so it’s also a great modulation destination in your patches, too.

Noise Engineering Blog: FM bell patch with LIP

Noise Engineering

"From the blog: https://www.noiseengineering.us/blog/...
Did you know that your LIP can do a pretty convincing emulation of FM? NO? Well, you do now. To make this work nicely, we need to tune our oscillators to a nice ratio that won’t be too inharmonic. For this example, oscillator B is tuned two octaves higher than oscillator A. How do we do this? Tuning LIP’s oscillators is easier than you might expect. First, switch Algo to the PM position, as that’s the algorithm we’ll be using for this sound. Set all the envelope sends to 12 o’clock so they’re not doing anything. Set the four tonal parameters fully counterclockwise, and switch the Mode to Free. You should just hear something close to a sine wave. Switch Master to A, then use the A pitch encoder to find a base frequency that you like. Then, switch Master to B, and use the B pitch encoder to tune oscillator B to a frequency two octaves above A (you can use a tuner like Soleo Vero for this, or switch Master back and forth to do it by ear).

Noise Engineering Blog: Subtractive patch with LIP

Noise Engineering

"From the blog: https://www.noiseengineering.us/blog/...

LIP tends to get noisy when you introduce inharmonic (read: out-of-tune) modulation from the second oscillator, which LIP makes easy to do. There are ways to get around that, but there are a lot of sounds we can make with just a single oscillator, too. This one is a personal favorite: by using the internal envelope to modulate the Morph parameter, we can emulate a traditional subtractive pluck.

Sky Soundlab Voice Spectra Vocoder SN BE14016598

via this auction

You can find a demo of one here.

"Up for sale is the rare Voice Spectra Vocoder produced by Sky Soundlab (the same unit alternatively produced by Seekers).

It is in very good used condition with minor rack rash and some cosmetic wear.

It is in fully working functional condition.

Excellent youtube demo linked, it is not of this actual unit!

Comes with power cable. Some more info below:

This has a very clear sound for an analogue vocoder, a big part of why it makes voices so intelligible is the syllable function which inserts noise bursts into the signal for “s” and “sh” syllables. This is a pretty rare feature on an analogue vocoder, and it really helps with intelligiblity. The syllable function is also really cool for creating rhythms.

The Voice Spectra has good reputations in Japan for clear extent, high timbre, and for Speech Tracking Function (STF). STF is basically a pitch- to-voltage converter which functions by reading the glottal pulses of the speech signal. The control voltages from the output of the pitch extractor are fed to the VCO, so that this follow the cadences of the speech signaI. STF is an interesting additional facilities only to be found on more expensive vocoders like EMS.

Everyone familiar with vocoding will appreciate the Voice spectras compressor and Voiced/Unvoiced detector*.

The Voice spectra is a high quality studio-vocoder, appreciated by the staff at music studios, professional musicians, etc. in Japan. The articulation of the output signal is extremely good, being distinguished by remarkable clarity and distinctiveness. This quality of articulation, among other things, is what distinguishes SKY soundlab from other less sophisticated vocoders like the MAM VF11.

Sequenced Jam #192 (w/ Noise Engineering Desmodus Versio)

Rheyne

"Some more experiments with lighting controlled by the modular synth. The main synth voices are from a Steady State Fate ZPO through a Noise Engineering Desmodus Versio, and an Instruo Ts-L through a Strymon Magneto. Bass is from a Roland SYS-510, the piano is from a 1010music Bitbox Micro, and percussion is from an SSF Entity BDS, Noise Engineering LIP, and the Bitbox Micro. All sequencing was done with the NerdSEQ.

All audio was sent to Ableton through a pair of outs on an Expert Sleepers ES-9 to trigger the lights with an Enttec DMXIS. The piano was played through the outs on the ES-9 and into the Bitbox Micro, and is triggered manually as a stereo sample. Recorded in one take with no overdubs."
