Memorymoog Sound Design

video by wedream2

"I finally got an opportunity to take a deep dive into sound design on the Memorymoog (after complete restoration and upgrades performed by Rosen Sound). I tweaked most of the factory sounds and added expression pedal programming to each. In the following examples, a factory sound is identified by the bracketed number and the name of the factory sound. I also created original sounds that are identified by name only (no bracketed numbers). I used the additional stereo outputs recently installed, so listening through stereo headphones is recommended. The panning positions of the voices cycle, similar to the OB-8, except when the cyclic memory mode is selected, where upon the same key repeatedly played, holds the same pan position. To avoid going over an hour in length, I eliminated multiple factory and original sounds from this demo. The more interesting and complicated original sounds are showcased."

Metropolix + Syntrx // A Quick First Test

video by Genshi Media Group

"::| TO HEAR THE FULL RANGE OF FREQUENCIES AND STEREO EFFECTS, A GOOD PAIR OF HEADPHONES ARE HIGHLY RECOMMENDED |::

This is a quick first test of the new Intellijel Metropolix Sequencer paired up with my Erica Synths Syntrx Synthesizer (makes for a perfect pairing!) The big new thing with the Metropolix over their previous Metropolis sequencer is the new "Accumulator" feature, which allows you to have different notes in a scale play, not only per step, but per Pulse count on each and every step, or per Ratchet on every step! It's groundbreaking! And makes for a very musical sequencer in only 8 steps..."

GForce OB-E quick demo

video by boxoftextures

"Quick demo of the OB-E synth software from GForce, makers of the fine M-Tron software among other things. The patch is my own, freshly made. Had no idea this was coming out, and when I saw it this morning was more or less an instabuy. When I was a lad in high school I'd go to Sam Ash on 48th Street in New York City on my way home from high school in the '70s and play all the synths until they'd kick me out, often when it got busy once folks got off work but more often probably because I'd accidentally made some horrid and/or way too loud sound. I played Minimoogs, ARPs, and the Oberheims, and eventually saved up enough to get my first Minimoog. But there was no way I was ever going to be able to get one of those Oberheim Four- or eight-voices as they cost a small fortune at the time. And kind of still do, I suppose. But this software emulation comes darn close. It has the flavor of the eight-voice, and it sounds fantastic. It's also modern, meaning because it's software there are handy shortcuts to make patch programming a bit easier than on the original hardware version. Had great fun making this first patch, and can see getting lost in it for the next week or two. Highly recommended.

Hinton Instruments Introduces SwitchMix II, Output Line Driver, and Balanced Multiple Four

via Hinton Instruments

"Our 3U Professional Module range continues to expand with two new modules and the return of an old favourite.

SwitchMix II out of production since 2016, this redesigned version features several improvements and a lower price.
Now shipping.

Output Line Driver is not just a balanced converter (all our module outputs are balanced anyway). This module can drive long cables and provides extra features for a comprehensive final output stage. The onboard stereo FET compressor gives a choice of clean or dirty.

Balanced Multiple Four groups of four linked mults provide up to 10 outputs and two phase changers for inverting signals.
___

SwitchMix replaces a tangle of patch cables, mults, and eight eight-input precision adders in one easy to visualise panel.

SwitchMix was our first and last Eurorack module, SwitchMix II has been redesigned and de-Eurofied to conform to the higher standards of our other modules and is now fully AES48 compatible. New features include a Gate and Trigger converter similar to that in PinMix which may be brought out on an option panel.

Output Line Driver

A compact stereo output stage for a modular voice with balanced line drivers suitable for long cable runs on the main outputs.

The Output Line Driver is much more than just a balanced output converter. The overall gain may be precisely calibrated between -8.5dB to +8.5dB gain to match expected levels. A pre-Level stereo aux send and return is provided for interfacing to effects units. A Spin control provides feedback to the effects unit and an "X" switch swaps left and right for ping-pong effects.

A stereo compressor may be switched in on the main outputs for subtle and unsubtle tone changes. This is based on a FET design used in a well known console for reverse talkback. The compression threshold may be preset to taste and the side chain is available for external control by audio or CV signals.

A 3.5mm headphone jack for monitoring pre-Mute is provided for live use and may also be wired to a 1/4" stereo jack.

Features

DC servo-ed inputs and outputs to remove offsets
Professional pan law, -4.5dB in centre
Multiple modules may have their main outputs linked for a stereo mix
Output Line transformers may be added externally if required, but are not normally necessary
LED signal level indicators
Stereo FET Compressor
Stereo FX send and return with Spin
Stereo Headphone output

Balanced Mult

A group of four linked 4-way balanced multiples, two with "phase change" (φ) inversion.

N.B. Inversion requires balanced inputs and multing to unbalanced inputs will short out the signal

Features

Normalling between groups to allow extended signal splitting
Completely passive and bidirectional
No signal loss when driven with zero impedance outputs
May be patched to balanced outboard devices

Tom Oberheim Registers the OB-Xa Trademark

via the USPTO

"Mark For: OB-XA™ trademark registration is intended to cover the categories of downloadable and recorded software for creating and processing music and sounds; downloadable and recorded user interface software for controlling musical instruments."

You might recall, Tom Oberheim got the Oberheim trademark and brand back in July of 2019.

Note Sequential worked with Tom Oberheim on the OB-6. Tony Karavidas of Sequential worked on the original OB-Xa with Tom Oberheim prior to Sequential. Considering Sequential re-introduced the Prophet-5 and Prophet-10, just maybe... :)

GForce Introduces the OB-E - Virtual Oberheim 8-Voice Software Synthesizer

OB-E Tutorials

GForce Software - OB-E - Oberheim 8 Voice - One Synth Track.

video by GEOSynths

"OB-E is our take on the legendary 8-Voice. More than just an emulation, OB-E offers a unique musical experience. Sounding HUGE, it takes the iconic Synthesiser Expander Module based 8-Voice (a.k.a the EVS) into new sonic territory via a raft of enhancements and additions.

The concept of the 8-Voice is actually very simple; based around a single Module containing two VCOs with Pulse and Sawtooth waveforms, two ADS Envelope Generators, one LFO, and a magical Multi-Mode Filter. In isolation eac Module is monophonic, but in the 8-Voice, because there are eight Modules triggered by a polyphonic keyboard, you have a superb eight note polyphonic synthesizer.

While simple at heart, OB-E is, to our knowledge, the first virtual instrument with complete per-voice control. This unique Octaphonic architecture offers fresh and exciting creative possibilities to music producers, composers and sound designers for the first time in the digital realm.

We’ve painstakingly emulated every section of the synth to create an authentic sounding instrument with the convenience of software control over those eight modules. Mono, Poly, Unison, Split, it’s all yours now. Add to this a new third oscillator that doubles as LFO, a new LFO per voice, and a stack of additional performance controls via velocity, polyphonic aftertouch and MPE control and you’ll begin to understand the depth of musical possibilities OB-E provides.

Programming a polyphonic Patch on an original 8-Voice was a daunting mission, OB-E makes it a cinch. Unison Chords a forté. To overcome the arduous task of editing 8 individual modules, OB-E provides a number of clearly-thought out editing controls such as Zoom which zooms on a specific module and its rear panel, Group (shown above) which enables a Synthesizer Expander Module parameter change to be applied to all Modules at once, and Offset modes as well as a resizable user interface. While it possible to save OB-E preset, it is also possible to save and reload each single Module as a preset, copy-paste them in between each Module or lock a Module to prevent changes from being applied to it (even when loading a new patch)

And that’s not all! With the original MS-1 sequencer as a starting reference point, we’ve added an extremely comprehensive and creative 8-step Sequencer (shown on the right above) providing a flexibility and fun-factor unavailable via the original hardware. In keyboard Split mode with the Sequencer routed to Module 8, OB-E provides the ability to create a complete three part soundscape from a single Patch. An all-new routable Stereo Delay provides sonically complimentary effects.

Finally, we’ve complemented our instrument with 600+ factory patches designed by Dave Spiers and a roster of brilliant sound designers. Even better, each patch has been tagged, categorised and is quickly accessible from OB-E’s librarian (arrow navigation friendly)."

Dark Souls - Firelink Shrine (Korg Minilogue, Volca FM)

video by SyllixMusic

"Hello! Here's my synth cover of Dark Souls - Firelink Shrine played on the Korg Minilogue and the Volca FM. I really love the dark, ambient nature of this song and felt it would be a perfect fit for me to cover. The minilogue handles the ambient pads while the Volca FM plays the role of the harp. I absolutely love the second half of this song and the Volca FM handles it beautifully - I am really happy with the tone and how it turned out.

The cover is very true to the original song, with some minor differences I added for my own personal preference. I hope you enjoy it!"

Arpex - MPE MaxforLive Device for Ableton Live by Mark Towers

video by Isotonik Studios

"ARPEX is an expressive arpeggiator Max for Live device. It works just like a regular arpeggiator with the addition of MPEfunctionality.

Incoming MPE slide and pressure data is used to control the octave transposition and note duration for each individual note.

This means by sliding or applying more pressure to each note, exciting new variations of the arpeggiated pattern can be played, in real-time."
