The press release:

""Powerful new tools to shape your sound.

Novation has just launched its biggest update yet for Summit and Peak. Firmware v2.0 brings in essential improvements and a multitude of features across stereo controls, modulation, unpredictability, and effects, that give you powerful tools to shape your sound.

Summit and Peak owners will now be able to create bigger, wider, and more intricately textured soundscapes with updated stereo controls. Experiment with expansive sound design with modulation and unpredictability. A range of effects improvements brings new tonalities with the addition of Chorus Modes, Flanger, Phlanger, new effects modulation destinations and Lo-Fi delay.

Firmware v2.0 Features

Stereo
New spread modes, panning per voice, and panning in the mod matrix give additional control and allows for sound design in the stereo field. Now you can create bigger, wider, and more intricately textured soundscapes.
Modulation and unpredictability
Create deeper and more experimental sounds with new mod destinations, noise as a mod source, and additional LFO 3 and 4 parameters. Animate Envelopes and Arpeggiator Chance open more creative performance possibilities.

Effects
New effects, including Chorus Modes, Flanger, and Phlanger add new tonalities. Additional effects modulation destinations open up more experimental sound design. A new Lo-Fi delay mode enables a more vintage style sound.

Bug Fixes
The firmware update v2.0 includes a number of bug fixes. The full details can be found in the release notes.

You can read about the full details of firmware v2.0 by visiting the Components update page for Summit and Peak.

Summit and Peak firmware v2.0 is the last addition to the legacy of Chris Huggett’s innovative synth design work with Novation. Having shaped the sound of Novation’s iconic synths – including Bass Station, Supernova, Bass Station II, Peak and Summit, Chris has left an indelible imprint on our heritage, and we will always be grateful for his influence and inspiration.

Novation will also be hosting a live stream today (Thursday March 31st, 2022, 9pm UK time), with product specialist Enrique, taking place on our YouTube channel, where the new v2.0 update features will be demonstrated live.

For those unfamiliar with Peak and Summit, Peak is an eight-voice polyphonic synthesiser that boasts rich and warm sounds, while Summit is a two-part, 16-voice, 61-key synthesiser with great harmonic depth – both now with enhanced capabilities thanks to firmware update v2.0.

Summit & Peak owners are now able to download the v2.0 update from Novation Components."

New Patching Sound Exhibit Opens at the Moogseum & Ikutaro Kakehashi's An Age Without Samples

via The Bob Moog Foundation where you'll find additional details.

"We're excited to share that the Moogseum has had a busy winter and early spring! We were closed for construction in January and February, which allowed us to expand our space to accommodate new exhibits. We spent the month of March creating the latest addition to our family of interactive exhibits, Patching Sound: Understanding Modular Synthesis.

Patching Sound provides visitors with a hands-on opportunity to patch, or create, sounds on a synthesizer interface by connecting various modules that control individual parameters of sound. The custom-designed exhibit was created by Los Angeles-based Sounds Amazing.

Patching Sound was made possible by a generous donation from Dave and Karen Rossum, with additional support from North Carolina Humanities, an affiliate of the National Endowment for the Humanities, and by donors like you!

A large, fully restored, historic R.A. Moog modular synthesizer, originally created in 1968, serves as the inspirational backdrop for the interactive installation. As part of its storied provenance, this synthesizer was used on the soundtrack of Francis Ford Coppola's Apocalypse Now. You can read more about its history here.

Come experience Patching Sound: Understanding Modular Synthesis at the Moogseum! We are open from 11-5 seven days a week."

"Ikutaro Kakehashi's An Age Without Samples Now Available On Bob Moog Foundation Online Store

We are proud to now be offering An Age Without Samples by synthesizer pioneer Ikutaro Kakehashi in our online store. This 312-page hardcover book was published the same year that its revered author passed away. An Age Without Samples explores such themes as the resurrection of the venture spirit of the '60s and '80s, creativity, and originality. It is replete with examples from his own experiences and storied career and is generously illustrated with scores of rarely seen photos.

Read more about An Age Without Samples and purchase it here.

We send our deep thanks to Ikuo Kakehashi for donating these books to the Bob Moog Foundation so that we could share them with our worldwide community of supporters and generate funding for our innovative work."

Option to save the recorded loop to the sampler and to an external file."

CME's SWIDI Behringer Clone Was An April Fool's Joke?

Follow-up to this post featuring a black model. via CME:

"It all started as an April Fool's joke...

We were actually wondering what would happen if a small innovator like CME cloned a clone.

Simply raising the question of what innovation is all about.

A good joke often hurts a little. It was in no way our intention to offend anyone. Not a company. And certainly not a person.

Next time we will think of other creative ways to get your attention. No worries about that.

That said, the number of responses we got was staggering.

Apparently, innovation is not only about new technology, but also about offering existing solutions at an attractive price.

That got us thinking. Should we make this practical joke a reality?

Actually, this all depends on you. That's why we ask you to participate.

If you have a few minutes, take a look at project SWIDI!"

Roland Alpha Juno, Waldorf Streichfett with Piano and Kaoss Pad

video upload by Tum Tum

"This track is all one take, and what I mean by that is I recorded the MIDI of an improvised piano part and then ran that out to a couple of synths after first passing the note info through some MIDI modifiers in Ableton. I also swapped the back half from a piano to a rhodes, just for fun. It's neat working with MIDI this way, as a creative tool rather than a linear record.

"For the past couple of months I have been experimenting with the mysterious Lyra-8, an 'orgaismic synthesiszer' from @Vlad Kreimer of Soma Lab - and have been very pleasantly surprised at how engaging and exciting it is to play with and explore. Far more than just a drone machine, this is a beautiful instrument which has encouraged me to approach music a bit differently. Check out the video to see what I make of it.

A huge thank you to Signal Sounds (signalsounds.com) for letting me borrow one of their demo units to test. They stock a wide variety of weird and wonderful electronic instruments, and are well worth checking out for yourself."

"Good condition. Only a couple blemishes on the control panel and some wear on the wood sides from normal use of a vintage instrument. Recent service, has had minor battery issues addressed. Installed lithium battery mod, and reinstalled factory patch data on all banks. Cpu board was recapped with nichicon 105c audio caps at time of battery service. Has had one switch cover replaced with a reproduction.

Overall a fantastic example of a fairly rare vintage synthesizer. Only a couple thousand of these SSM polysynths were made."

"The Grandmother is a lovely semi-modular analog monosynth with circuits based on the original Moog modular modules. It has the classic heavy Moog sound and is great for bass, warm leads, and of course can get weird with some patching.

This synth is in great shape and includes the original box (strangely converted to a carrying case), paperwork, patch cables and power supply."

"A high water mark for glassine pads, premier brass stabs, and surprisingly present basses, the Roland Juno 106 is well deserving of it's status as a classic synthesizer. All voices have been refurbished, this is a fully working specimen, with all sliders and pots cleaned and working wonderfully. Physically, this is a synth which shows it's age and use, but operationally this Juno is a superior sonic experience.

This Juno was just serviced by our in-house technician, all voice chips have been refurbished, all new tact switches and power supply has been fully recapped.

"The D-50 is a very interesting digital synth that combines PCM samples with Roland's linear arithmatic synthesis method, a style of digital subtractive synthesis. The PCM samples are providing the attack sound and the LAS section will ring out or sustain. In practice some very lovely and complex sounds are easy to achieve with the D-50.

This synth is in great shape and works perfectly with just some minor cosmetic wear from its age, joystick is fully functional (just missing the screw-on tip). Incudes AC power cable and a D50 memory card.

Service notes:

Replaced internal memory battery, rebuilt power supply, replaced SMD op amp in post d/a audio driver. Ran all test modes, calibrated d/a offset."

When you are working on a unique sound, it’s always nice to have hands-on controls to easily dial in the sweet-spots. The possibility to quickly adjust any parameter of your sound is necessary to adapt to the workflow of any user. "Like nearly all the high end vintage analog synths we sell, this item has been METICULOUSLY disassembled, cleaned inside and out, FULLY serviced by professionals who’ve been servicing and selling vintage synths for more than the last 2 decades, and systematically tested multiple times over a long period to ensure it’s working exactly as it should. No BS. No ebay surprises. We’re perfectionists and don’t cut corners. Although this instrument came to us in relatively good shape, we want our items to be better than the rest and invested *many* hours of tech time plus parts costs to fully overhaul this unit so it would be clean, working like new again and as reliable as possible for its next owner. This was a serious investment of time, love, and money, and was definitely worth the effort and is of course reflected in the higher than usual price. If you’re looking for a great sounding example of this model that works just like it should without needing to invest hundreds or thousands of dollars in tech fees and waiting from weeks to years, this one should make you very happy."

"We paid our tech for 10 hours of skilled labor to completely refurbish and future-proof this unit so it will hopefully outlast all others of its kind. This work is of course reflected in its price.

All 80017 chips had their resin coating removed (this coating eventually starts causing failures in these, so we chemically remove it as a preventative measure). Both speakers in this unit have been replaced with new ones. Power supply electrolytic capacitors were replaced. The battery was replaced and patches were reloaded. This unit was cleaned inside and out. (The speaker area is hard to clean, so you may still see dust inside that section if you look closely). Cold solder joints were reflowed. Cleaned and lubed all slide and rotary pots. Recalibrated. Adjusted keyboard. Systematically tested several times and burn in test passed.

We received the last SH-2 we bought in it. We specifically bought that one for use in our studio rather than for resale. Since we have no need for this box, we figured we'd pass it along to a collector type who wants it. It’s also possible someone may want it for shipping purposes, though we always recommend packing things better for shipping, so we wouldnt recommend it for that unless it’s double-boxed. Also note that one of the foam end pieces is broken. Take a good look at the pics so you know what you’ll be getting, as always."

"This unit was tested and is working surprisingly well for a user assembled unit of its type and age. Since it's a relatively low value item, since tech time is valuable, and since most people who buy Paia gear are also into DIY electronics and enjoy doing their own repairs, we are selling it as is. This is one of the simplest synths ever made so sorting out its issues or even fully refurbishing it to be as good as new shouldnt be hard for someone who knows what they're doing. During testing, we noticed the following issues: The envelope generator attack seems too fast at maximum setting and the expand function doesn't seem to work. The oscillator doesn't track the keyboard well. We didn't attempt to calibrate the oscillator so doing so may or may not fix this -these 2700 paia oscillators typically dont track well, so this may just be due to design and not any defect. If you can't do your own repairs and don't have a good tech, you may want to trying to get in touch with Paia to see if they'd consider doing it or if they could refer you to someone who works on old Paia gear. This sale includes technical manuals and patch cables, as shown. Note: the manual colors changed a bit during photo editing, but the synth looks exactly the way it appears in the pics."

OBERHEIM OB-8 MIDI Synthesizer Meticulously Refurbished SN C31702

Additional Tone Tweakers Listings, also on Reverb

"This unit came to us in relatively good condition, but we fully rebuilt it to our high standards regardless, as we want our ob8s to be in top operational condition when they leave here, and to hopefully outlast all others too. This meticulous restoration took approximately 30 hours of skilled vintage synth tech time and this is of course factored into its price. Someone replaced the original keyboard with a different keyboard mechanism which works just fine, but the keys have a somewhat tighter feel than the original keyboard. There's also an added toggle switch on the front panel that's connected to the filter jack. This unit is an earlier version with 3080 VCAs as opposed to the CEM ones in the later version. We rebuilt the power supply with new capacitors, diodes and trimpots. All other trimpots inside this unit were replaced as well. We replaced molex terminal connectors, a common cause of bad connections and malfunction. We installed a new battery for the memory backup section and reloaded factory patches. We replaced all capacitors in the power line as well as the 4051 multiplexer on each voice. All pots were cleaned and lubed. All jacks cleaned, the unit disassembled and cleaned inside and out, and properly recalibrated. We also performed our special mod for improved tuning. This OB8 should make anyone looking for a fully functional OB8 very happy - you'll have a hard time finding a nicer one anywhere."

Oberheim OB-XA with Kenton Midi restored by Analog Lab, NY SN 820913

via this auction

"This thing is a beast! The source of Van Halen's Jump and so many of Prince's big records.

1981 Oberheim OB-Xa (8 voice/120 programs) with MIDI

Was restored in 2015 by Analog Lab, New York City.

Specifically:

1. Kenton MIDI Kit with in/out/thru and CC
2. New keyboard bushings installed; keyboard leveled--plays like new!
3. Complete servicing of power supply--like new!
4. Replaced capacitors and ribbon cables between boards
5. LED's replaced (a few were burned out when I bought it)

The MIDI kit alone, with labor, is a 1500 dollar upgrade. All in all, more than 2500 dollars of restoration was put into this synth!

Operationally, this synth is great. All keys, knobs, switches, and so on work!

Cosmetically, it originally had a few dings that have been re-painted. There is some minor "case rash" on the rear of the synth from a previous owner that probably kept it cased for 10-15 years, but it is barely visible when you look at the rear (see pictures). If I was being picky, I would rate the cosmetics of this Xa as a 7/10, all things considered. That being said, to see these trivial defects you have to look really closely, like putting your eyeball 6" away from the face panel."

Hologram Microcosm: Cheesy FM Synth Sounds

"Some cheesy FM sounds from an old Yamaha Portasound going through Microcosm serve as the basis for this track. We then added some glitchy guitar and drums/bass to complete this dream pop track."

Prologue 16 Pianoish - Bellish - Heavy Key Sounds using built-in Analog Compression & Drive

video upload by Mark Steiner

"Well worth hearing in good headphones alert!

Exploring heavy weighted approached keyboard sounds I created for the Korg Prologue 16.

This synth has some great, unique strengths that are nice for this direction of sound.

These sounds use only the 2 analog VCO's and often only one of them. The only effects used are the standard ones that come with the instrument.

I love the digital engine, but here I'm exploring some things that can be done fully with the analog VCO's.

Velocity sensitivity driving volume more than filter and taking advantage at subtle levels the Drive (analog distortion) and the analog compressor on this synth.

Many of the built in effects are amazing on this synth... cinematic mastering quality. Rare in even the most expensive synths.

Having dialed in drive, compression and effects saved in a patch at subtle sweet spots is so valuable!

16 note polyphony makes it great for this too. And the high pass filter switch can push things the groovy clav direction.

Some of these also explore some bell/clangal tone types heard where a secondary VCO has a changing, non-static pitch in many variations of speed, range, and lowness/height of start point.

All sounds & effects are directly from the Prologue.

The Monologue XD's and the Prologue 8 can do this stuff quite well but the compression of the 16 really is worth having and is just great! It provides some really special tonal/response across the velocity range. So great to jam with and to be emotionally expressive with in slower passages.

The NuEVI wind synth here is also playing sounds in the Prologue. They are very different than what I usually play as they also are tone colored by a little drive and analog compression... giving them some of that speaker cabinet smudged tone these also can give the key sounds here.

Thanks for listening!"

Afrorack: Sound samples from the filter etched on a PCB (Very percussive)

video upload by Afrorack

"From the my last video that I uploaded, I was not able to show the filter from the PCB that I etched working. That is because 2 legs of one of the transistors were touching. More specifically their pads on the PCB. Anyways, I sorted that out and now the filter is working. The original filter from Yusynth is here if you want to check it out http://yusynth.net/Modular/EN/STEINER..." [mentioned in this recent post on Nyle Steiner]

I etched my first PCB! Well almost

"I am always excited to learn something new. This is a skill i've always wanted to learn since I build my circuits on perfboard. It didn't come out perfect but non the less I salvaged the circuit in other ways. If you have pointers on how to make better transfers leave a comment below."
