Zynthian V5 improvisation

video upload by Floyd Steinberg

"... using the internal sequencer.
Using the #ZynAddSubFX plugin mostly, but also #Linuxsampler for the drums and piano.
Some TAL Reverb III for those big rooms.
#Zynthian V5 will be available later this year. Zynthian is an open source synthesizer powered by Linux and various free and commercial plugins, all wrapped up in a sleek-looking box with a unified UI and a number of sequencers. If you don't want to buy the kit, you can also download the system image and build one yourself using a #raspberrypi 4.

I originally made this track using a ‘strings’ pad on my JD-800, but I sat there feeling like “couldn’t I just do this with the Virus – and so I did. I don’t know whether they were similar enough because this is now the final copy. I like the JD-800, but it’s so big and feels unnecessary in my studio. Swapping out the gear like this makes me think that it’s even more true.

The drums were made by filtering all samples into the analog 24db LP filter and then into the fixed filterbank. Maybe I can make a video where I show how that changes the sound of the samples… It’s a pretty basic track and video though, so there really isn’t much to what I made here.

"Awesome synth. Very similar to an ms-20 but unique. The traveler filter is Awesome. Unlike the ms-20 it has pwm. Very Very good at basslines. It is in good shape. None of the pots are scratchy. The only problem is that the highest key is slightly to the side and the spring mechanism isn't bringing the key up by itself. The key triggers the note still, and the note doesn't stay on when you lift the key up, so it doesn't affect playability. Comes with a midi kit I never got around to installing it."

September Fifteenth synth pad on Sequential Take 5

video upload by CyberGene

"This is an attempt to recreate the synth pad played by Lyle Mays on the track called 'September Fifteenth' from the 1981 record 'As Falls Wichita, So Falls Wichita Falls' by Pat Metheny and Lyle Mays. The synth I use is the Sequential Take 5. Not an exact recreation but kind of there. Not sure about the chords either but the task here was the synth sound rather than the exact chord progression, voicing and timing.

The patch can be downloaded here (you need to be registered to the forum):

"DRUM MACHINE FOR SALE HERE: https://reverb.com/item/71915584

This is a scavenged rhythm unit from a 70s Farfisa spinet organ. Sounds are of course 100% analog on this one, no IC only transistors and diodes.
10 rhythms that can be combined and only volume and tempo control.
Sounds nice with the tape delay and spring reverb unit Korg Stage Echo."

8/4/23 Electrocomp EML 200 (flutes) + Roland CR-8000 (squirrel heartbeat) on undated cassette tape

video upload by Cfpp0

"This is an excerpt from an undated and unlabeled cassette tape from 2020 or 2021. EML 200 with a short envelope into its spring reverb, plus a kick drum from the modded Roland CR-8000 we used to have. I imagine a squirrel scurrying from tree to tree along the edge of Lake Waramaug. The video cuts right when the CR-8000’s congas kick in and the recording stops making any sense."

Suiko ST-20 - Vintage Analog Suitcase Synth

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.

via this auction

""SUIKO ST-20 is extremely rare and most strange Japanese electronic musical instruments originally made for Japanese traditional music circa. 1980. and this one is very rare version of SUIKO ST20 with recording function it's built in cool brown custom suitcase like EMS synth, keyboard itself is built in beautiful brown metal plate.

Features:
Oscillator - The ST-20 uses a single analog oscillator with 3 tone options - Shakuhachi (Japanese Flute), Koto (Japanese Harp) & Pipe Organ.
It is monophonic with a top-note priority.
All tones are very nice warm analog sounding.
There seems to be a subtle vibrato on some tones which may be adjustable internally.
Would easily be circuit bendable if you want to get some more interesting sounds!

Octave switch - There is a switch to raise the register up and down an octave which is useful for recording bass and lead lines.

Register Select - The top dial is to shift the key register up and down, giving you the option to solo your favourite scales over any key you like. It also allows you to create even higher or lower register notes than the octave switch allows.

Sustain - There is a sustain switch to toggle between a short pluck sound or a long drawn out release. The koto sound is not affected by this switch, it seems the tone circuit was designed this way. You would also be able to circuit bend your own sustain control for dialing in the sound you really want if that's your style.

Volume Dial - A sweeping volume dial located at the bottom left of the unit.

Fine tuning - There is a switch for shifting the pitch very slightly in quarter tone increments. It becomes sort of 'Microtonal' in a way. You can also use this to do a little pitch bending too.

Scale switch - There is a small switch just above the key buttons which seems to change the pattern of the way the notes are configured. Currently it is set to the Japanese scale but you can play around with this if you like.

Speaker - The speaker goes very loud and sounds lovely.

Output - There is also a direct mono output for headphones, this could also be used as a direct output for connecting straight into your DAW or recording setup.

The keyboard module is connected to the speaker cabinet via a 5-pin 'MIDI' looking cable. This is not actually a MIDI cable, it simply just communicates with the power/amp board which is located inside the speaker cabinet.
The unit halves are connected by two hook hinges so you can pull them apart and use them"

"Contains the BBD chips MN3009 for that warm analog 'ensemble' effect. It has separate outputs for organ and strings, really awesome. It has a sound reminiscent of the opening of 'Oxygene' (J-M Jarre) or the lead line from 'Love Will Tear Us Apart' (Joy Division)."

THE WERSIMATIC CX1

video upload by Vintage Audio Institute Italia

"Introducing the Wersimatic CX1 - a stylish auto accompaniment unit made in Germany in the early 80s.

It sports 4 sections :

Analog Drum machine
Bass section
Chord section
Arpeggiator section (it’s maybe more like a second chord generator)

Each section can be muted, individual drum sounds can be muted.
This specific unit was modified with independent volume control for each section - those are the extra knobs on the front panel - as well as separate outputs for each section in the back.
The drum patterns, the chord and arpeggiator sections are all programmable.

The CX1 was followed by the CX2 - which is basically the same machine but with 12bit sample drums instead of the CX1’s analog drums - it seems the bass, chords and arpeggiator sounds and patterns are all the same on the CX1 and CX2. The CX2 sports an additional row of buttons for programming purposes but those are available on the CX1 as well - the row of buttons on the left has a third submenu."
