Making an enclosure for an axoloti synth

Published on Jul 13, 2017 Matthew Tyas

"This video shows the different steps necessary into making a DIY synth using an axoloti board, a few buttons, some pots, plugs and wire.
This isn't in any way a tutorial for woodwork, soldering or electronics, but can give you an idea of what can be done with little skill. It's only an example and with some imagination and information research you can make something much more evolved.
All the music that you can hear during this video was recorded using this 'SebtiSynth' and a unique patch (with overdubs, added reverb and simple mixing)"

A synth isn't a real synth without a kitten & synth clip, so here we go.
The music was made by overdubbing the synth in question (an Axoloti)"

"SebtiSynth" example patch explanation and sounds

Published on Jul 9, 2017 Matthew Tyas

"In this video, I show off a quick patch I created for my newly made Axoloti box : the 'SebtiSynth'. The patch is loosely based on the ms10 architecture, and is only an example of one of the many things an Axoloti can do"

Axo Kastle (day 1)

Published on Feb 25, 2017 Mark Harris

"An exploration of Bastl Kastle and Axoloti.
I received Kastle yesterday, so very new to me, but a really enjoyable experience.
I thought Id run it thru Axoloti, to demothe new fx in 1.0.12, so this just axoloti + kastle - two machines costing 65 euro, and very small, great portable fun.

Axoloti is fitted with a Music Thing AxoControl , which I bought from http://thonk.co.uk"

Anatta - Dusty Patches | OP-1, PO-12, Eurorack & Axoloti

Published on Jan 25, 2017 Dusty Patches

"The Keystep is sequencing the modular and synced to the PO-12. The modular is running through the Axoloti in an effects loop, and everything is running into the OP-1 for more effects.

The Axoloti is running a patch with a breadth of effects including crossfading LP/HP filter, grainer, reverb, drive, and compression. All of this is controlled by MIDI via the Nanokontrol.

I'm tweaking two knobs on the modular, the LFO rate of the square wave, and an attenuator for the LFO being sent to the oscillator FM, VCA, and HP filter."

Annihilistic Healing - Heatseekerrr | OP-1 & Axoloti Core

Published on Dec 20, 2016 Heatseekerrr

"Created with an OP-1, Axoloti Core, and Reaktor 6.

The OP-1 is the brain, controlling time and FX. All the percussion was done with the OP-1 as well. That gets routed to the Axoloti, providing a wealth of different FX mapped to the Nanokontrol. All the synth sounds were created and sequenced in Reaktor 6 and sampled into the OP-1."

"An improvised performance using a Striso board as controller and an Axoloti as sound source and effects"

Some info on the The Striso as a stand alone instrument. You'll find some videos on their site.

"The Striso is an entirely new musical instrument. It is intuitive to play, has its own distinct and very versatile sound, and combines the possibilities of electronic with the experience of an acoustic instrument. It is small enough to easily take with you, and you can play everywhere you want.

The base of the Striso is a field of small yet powerful buttons that are sensitive in all directions. They let you control the subtle properties of the sound of each note independently. Additionally, you can add accents and sound effects by shaking and moving the Striso. Together this creates enormous possibilities for musical expression.

The intuitive and systematic arrangement of the buttons makes you comprehend musical patterns, as all intervals, chords and scales have the same shape in every key. This lets you play in all keys with the same ease. Read more about the note layout at DCompose note layout.

The Striso is designed to keep you connected with the music you’re playing, whether you want to play lively folk melodies, complex jazz progressions, diverse world music, experimental microtonal compositions or anything else."

Adrenochrome - Heatseekerrr | OP-1 & Axoloti Core

Published on Nov 22, 2016 Heatseekerrr

"Created with an OP-1 and Axoloti Core.

The sound is generated from the OP-1 and the Axoloti is utilized as a stereo LP/HP filter with multi-effects - grainer, bode pitch shifter, bitcrusher, and reverb - all MIDI controlled by the Nanokontrol.

The grainer demands elaboration. There are two parameters being controlled, grain size and grain rate. These are precisely dialed in to produce a trippy octave delay. The buttons I'm hitting are mapped to freeze and reverse. Freeze loops the currently playing grain and reverse plays it backwards (there is also a slope setting which results in the tape speed effect).

I designed the patch but all of the modules were coded by a few different power users and the dev of the Axoloti. Much credit goes to those talented folks!

AxoStomp - Custom Hardware Case for the Axoloti by Frank Piesik

This one in via @carolinezoids (Caroline Swords)

"AxoStomp by @fpiesi: a practical case for @axoloti_be w/ arcade buttons & faders off a Korg nanoKONTROL [link] … @matrixsynth"

via the project site:

"A little while ago I told you about the Axoloti and how much I like it. But because it’s just a bare pcb without casing, I didn’t get to use it in practical context very much. Now I had a little time to design a 3d-printable enclosure. I call it AxoStomp and it features:
– 8 faders (from a Korg Nano Control)
– 4 Arcade-Buttons with leds.
– robust, parametric design, made with OpenScad (excluding the front plate for the connectors which is derived from Jens Groh’s design). The code lacks comments and needs refactoring, but it may be useful to somebody…

The Files are hosted on my Github page"

«WOMB» — hands on interactions with digital sound

«WOMB» — hands on interactions with digital sound from a guy called tom on Vimeo.

"Knobs, buttons and keys are the dominant means of interaction with electronic musical instruments. The aim of the «WOMB» prototyp is to explore alternativ ways to this paradigm. What if we could shape digital sounds with our hands, in the same way we can shape/sculpt clay?

«WOMB» is a hybrid electroacustic instrument that allows rich, direct, haptic interaction with a multidimensional parameter space through a flexible userinterface. It is based on the awesome Axoloti plattform and was developed as part of my masters degree in interaction design at the Zurich University of the Arts (ZHdK)."

snatches of dreams

Published on Jun 2, 2016 Matthew Tyas

"a live improvisation using a home made axoloti synth and a controller keyboard. The patches consists of 8 short mono midi sequencers, each with it's own sound."

Always get a kick out of people playing synths in the forest. One of the harmonica sounding background synth lines that weaves in and out (6:47) reminds me of COIL's The Snow Ep. Listen below at 1:00. Love that sound.

Axoloti Core & Dronebox Jam (Ambient Synth Music) #TTNM

Published on Apr 26, 2016 The Tuesday Night Machines

"Tried out my Axoloti Core for the first time today and came up with this patch. Amazing hardware/software combo! Like a modern Nord Modular :D

Audio gear used:
- Axoloti Core with Synth/FX Patch, connected to CME Xkey (processing the Dronebox audio and creating expressive ambient synth sounds in stereo, with the internal engine and the keyboard. The sustain button triggers the sweeping noise, pitch bend adjusts one of several low pass filters and the mod wheel button pitches up one of the oscillators for bird-like chirping sounds)
- DIY Dronebox (2x Atari Punk Console, Winky Pedals Fuzz, PT Delay)
- Zoom R16 Recorder"
