MOTU MachFive 3 Sampler & Synth Engine

"Within minutes after you begin using MachFive 3, you'll appreciate the years of user interface design and engineering that have gone into this 3rd-generation release. From the configurable part list to the full-screen envelope editor, MachFive 3 has been designed to spur your creative muse while delivering state-of-the-art virtual instrument technology in a streamlined, efficient environment. After all, music, sound design, and audio production are creative endeavors that deserve a worthy partner in creativity...

Powerful new synth engine
Twelve forms of synthesis that span music history

From modular analog pioneered in the 1950's to milestone breakthroughs like FM and wavetable synthesis in the decades that followed, MachFive 3 delivers twelve synth engines that make it a powerful multi-synthesizer in its own right. When combined with MachFive's multi-sample instrument capabilities and extensive effects, the possibilities for hybrid synthesis and sound design are limitless...MachFive's all-new synth engine produces twelve different forms of synthesis, from classic additive and subtractive, to frequency modulation (FM) and wavetable. Feeling adventurous? Try MachFive's granular synthesis engine, developed by the world-famous IRCAM research institute in Paris, France. You get most of the milestone synthesis techniques developed over the last 40 years, all together under one roof, where you can combine sampling and synthesis, or synthesis and synthesis. So break out your synth programming chops and get ready to rumble."

kp3 and friends

YouTube Uploaded by justin3am on Jul 30, 2011

"Another feeble attempt at showing how a Kaoss Pad can be used as an awesome control surface for a modular synth. I'm horrible at talking while I'm syntherbating so most of my words are just rambling. Sorry.

The details... The MIDI from my KP3 is controlling Expert Sleepers' Silent Way DC plug-in hosted in Numerology. The CV is sent out of my MOTU interface via ADAT to ES-3 CV interface.

The signals generated by Silent Way are used to control the Make Noise Phonogene granular sampler. Audio from Phonogene goes into the Korgasmatron filter and then the zDSP.

The additional synth parts are all coming from the modular. Again I'm using Numerology and Silent Way to generate the sequences. The drums are from my Octatrack, all sounds sampled from the modular."

Hinton Instruments Custom DAW Interface for Volta

via Hinton Instruments

"Hinton Instruments has supplied an active multichannel interface for use with a MotU 2408 and Volta, or Expert Sleepers’ Silent Way, that overcomes the inherent limited range problems and the inability to trigger older synthesizers requiring high gate and trigger voltages.

Two of our Quad Line Input eurocards were used to provide balanced to unbalanced conversion, ±10dB (÷3 to x3) level trim with LED indicators and dedicated high level V-trig and Moog type S-trig outputs. Although this particular system was intended for CV outputs the cards may also be used for DAW Output or Input level matching and may be switched between DC coupling and AC coupling with DC servoing.

The Quad Line Input may also be supplied as a Eurocard module or bare pcb to be built into other systems allowing a variety of interfacing functions between DAWs and unbalanced systems to be easily configured."

BPM 1.5

YouTube via motuTV | August 03, 2010

"BPM 1.5 adds many new features, plus 4 GB of additional sounds for over 19 GB of included kits, patterns, loops, and samples.

TR 808…LinnDrum…SP1200… Iconic rhythm machines from decades past that brought us legendary sounds that still drive today's beats. BPM delivers the sounds of 80 such classic machines from the 1970's, 80's and 90's — a massive 4 GB collection of legacy rhythm sounds, combined with BPM's updated 1.5 library, for an unprecedented 19 GB, by far the most extensive rhythm sound library available.

Updated soundbanks deliver kits, patterns and sounds for many additional musical styles, including big beat, dancehall, dub, electro, jungle, hard trance, house, jungle-drum bass, minimal, progressive, vinylized and others. With BPM's FlexLoop™ technology, you control every loop element, from individual samples to FX parameters. Combine kits and patterns from each style to quickly create unique hybrid beats.

How you play your instrument is how you express yourself as a musical artist. That's why BPM lets you use the MIDI controller of your choice. It needs to feel right. Be right. Just for you. BPM goes further by letting you customize how it responds to your pad controller, MIDI keyboard, or other controller, so that your flow is BPM's flow, and BPM flows with you.

Choose any note repeat value, from triplet 64ths to dotted quarters to 32x. Assign the note repeat button to any control item on your MIDI controller. Change the repeat value on the fly from your controller. Control the volume (velocity) of repeated notes with aftertouch pressure. This is rhythm programming the way it should be: live, dynamic, and customizable.

The new MIDI Select feature gives you direct access to each pad — up to 64 simultaneous pads per scene — for quick editing and tweaking directly from your MIDI controller. Need to tweak the filter cutoff on the crash cymbal? Play the pad, tweak the filter, done.

When creating your own banks of sounds, the new Bank Aux FX feature lets you program and save effects such as delays, reverb, filters, and any of BPM's dozens of included effects together with the bank itself, so that the next time you load the kit, the effects load with it.

The BPM 1.5 upgrade package includes:
* BPM 1.5 installer CD
* Updated BPM 1.5 soundbank DVDs
* New Beat Box Anthology soundbank DVD
* Beat Box Anthology iLok auth key code"

MOTU Volta on the B-Roll

"Volta is a pretty great invention in the world of modular synths. While it makes the visceral experience of patching something from raw into a slower more logistical experience, it makes the composing of music with the modular a much easier task. Plus there’s nothing better than being able to bring that modular perfectly in sync with Ableton Live and testing out different drum loops over the sound."

You can find the full post on the B-Roll. Some nice pics and audio there as well.

MOTU BPM Hardware

pics and details in this MOTUNATION thread. DIY project is by ssp.

"well im almost at the end of this little journey making this controller.
i just have the sidecheeks to wrap and the buttons to have their legends on and its finished!

i have decided to build the stand-alone unit and add some extra features, which you will have to wait until i start the build to see what they are. i am however going to build a control expander for this unit which will just link the the rear of thecase using a cascade port.

in the meantime heres the finished item (almost) hooked upto bpm and ready to run!

thanks for all the support while i have been working on this unit, i promise the next one will be even better."

"the first test of the first sensitivity tuning of the fsr pads for the hardware controller for my motu bpm software.

i need to adjust the sensitivity resistance a little however all the fsr pads work and allow full mapping of any note or cc# to any pad, double notes can be added in the editor."

Percy Hammersledge - modular synth improv

YouTube via doctorvague
"This was a fun one- I hope you enjoy it. The modular is a live stereo mix unedited. I jammed to a Bossa Nova drum loop and then mixed and mashed some loops after the fact to make it a bit more interesting. Used SynthesizersDOTcom, Modcan, Suit and Tie Guy, Moon Modular, MOTM, MOTU Volta and a DIY switcher in the upper right. I'm sending various rhythmic trigger pulse streams, including off-beats from Volta and switching them at the matrix switcher. The bottom row controls the delay time for example. I managed to hit the right combination of switches a couple of times and got lucky with some cool syncopations like at 2:29. This is the last section of a much longer jam."
