New Elka Synthex Cancelled Due to Lack of Funding

"THE ELKA SYNTHEX CAMPAIGN ON INDIEGOGO HAS NOW ENDED. WE'RE SADDENED THAT WE DID NOT REACH THE FUNDING TARGET.

THIS UNFORTUNATELY MEANS THAT ELKA SYNTHEX WILL NOT BE COMING BACK AFTER ALL. WE THANK EVERYONE WHO CONTRIBUTED AND SUPPORTED US.

ALL CONTRIBUTIONS HAVE BEEN REFUNDED. CONTRIBUTORS WILL RECEIVE THESE REFUNDS IN THEIR PAYPAL ACCOUNT, OR ISSUING CREDIT CARD (WITHIN 5 DAYS). IF YOU HAVE ANY FUTHER QUESTIONS ABOUT THE REFUND PROCESS PLEASE CONTACT INDIEGOGO.

IT WOULD HAVE BEEN COOL TO BRING ELKA SYNTHEX BACK."

The campaign goal was $414,000. It is currently closed and at $0. Curious what it got up to before closing. If you know, let us know. Also curious what will happen to http://bringelkaback.com.

Update: There is still the digital Synthex 2 from original Synthex creator, Mario Maggi, in the works.

Bleep Labs Introduces The Delaydelus Sampler and Delay Instrument

Uploaded on May 31, 2015 Bleep Labs

Limited edition available now for pre-order.
Orders will close July 2nd.

via Bleep Labs

"The Delaydelus is a sampler with a built in delay.

Each pin is a sample. The buttons are used to trigger whatever pin is connected to that buttons pin.
For example if the first pin, P1, is connected with the alligator clip wire to pin “A”, the A button on the left will play that sample.
If P1 is connected to P2 and A1 then the A button will play both samples at the same time.

Up to four samples can be triggered at once.

Pitch is adjusted with the knob on the left. When it’s at 12 o’clock the sample pays back at normal speed. As you go counter-clockwise from there the playback will go slower until it starts going in reverse.
Turning the knob clockwise from the center will increase the playback rate.

It’s powered by a 9v battery that’s inserted from the side.
The audio input and output are 1/8″ mono.
– Eight samples designed by Daedelus
– Over a minute of total sample memory
– Beautifully crunchy 12bit, 30kHz audio
– One second delay
– Combine four samples at a time with the unique patch bay
– Through mode to use the delay with an external source
– Sample audio or use it to trigger or modulate
– Optional USB adapter allows you you control the device with MIDI as well as reprogram it
– More info and videos in the user guide

Delay
The internal delay is controlled with two knobs.
The middle knob controls how long the delay is, from just a few microseconds at full clockwise to about a second at full counter-clockwise.
The feedback amount is controlled by the right knob. When the knob is all the way counter-clockwise the delay is off. As you turn clockwise the feedback increases. At 3 o’clock the feedback is infinite. Past that it’s amplified and starts to go crazy.

Novation Officially Introduces the MoroderNova

It looks like the tease, was true. The MoroderNova will be released in a limited run of 500. Novation has also launched http://morodernova.com/

The official press release:

"The Ultimate Collaboration

Over an incredible five-decade career, Giorgio Moroder has been nothing less than a beacon of influence in electronic music. Thanks to his pioneering work in the mid-70s with Donna Summer, among others, disco simply wouldn't sound the same. In the '80s, his blisteringly modern approach to producing the unforgettable soundtracks to movies including Scarface, Top Gun and Flashdance - using the synthesiser as his main instrument - captivated an entire generation of movie fans. More recently, Moroder has shot back into the popular consciousness, thanks to a universally acclaimed collaboration with Daft Punk in 2013, and his 2015 album Déjà Vu, which features Britney Spears, Kylie Minogue and Sia as guest artists.

It's his fascination with electronic sounds that is at the heart of his collaboration with Novation. Giorgio Moroder is nothing less than a god in the synth world: he's been responsible for creating some of the most recognisable sounds across numerous genres. The collaboration with Novation came about after Giorgio fell in love with the Novation MiniNova, taking it on tour all over the world. With MoroderNova, Novation and Giorgio Moroder have made a piece of synth history. Not only is it Novation's first signature model, it's the first and only synth with Giorgio's name on it. What's more, there are only 500 of them, each numbered and supplied with a certificate of authenticity.

Overview
Instantly-rare, the MoroderNova is a signature digital synthesiser which pays homage to Giorgio Moroder.

Branded with Giorgio's 'moustache and shades' insignia, and with a distinctive silver/black colourway, the unit is a stand-out piece of synth heritage.

The signature sounds identify some of Giorgio's most seminal moments in music. From the timbres of his disco classics with bands such as Sparks and Donna Summer, to the incredible sounds of the Top Gun and Scarface soundtracks, and his recent work with Daft Punk, Novation's sound designers have matched each and every one to the original. With access to these you'll be able to draw inspiration from the works of one of the most influential producers alive today.

Limited edition, numbered one of 500 units with certificate of authenticity."

New Elka Synthex 2 Digital Desktop Synth From Mario Maggi in the Works

This one is in via swissdoc and indirectly via Florian Anwander on the AH email list. This is not the new analog Elka Synthex clone from the new Finnish Generalmusic. This is however from the creator of the original Elka Synthex, Mario Maggi, and it is all digital. An interesting side note mentioned below is that Mario Maggi owns the Synthex name. Not sure what impact if any this might have on the upcoming Generalmusic Elka Synthex remake.

An Update: via swissdoc. It appears a filing for the name SYNTHEX was made on April 29, just three days ago. The filing is under category 15 which covers: "Electronic musical instruments; Electronic synthesizers; Electronic musical apparatus and instruments; Electric and electronic musical instruments; Mechanical, electric and electronic musical instruments; Electronic apparatus for synthesising music [musical instrument]."

"Hello to everyone,

my name is Enrico Cosimi, I'm the author of the text on ACM concerning the Synthex 2. I have been in touch, here in Rome/Italy, with Mario from the late Eigthies and, from the mid Nineties, I'm working with Mario on his "version two"; as you can imagine, Mario is a very very very busy kind of genius, who conceived and realized a lot of third party non-musical items (especially for telecommunications and health). I am not allowed to reveal all the data concerning the new Synthex 2 (b.t.w., it will be a digital equipment: would you dare to conceive an analog instrument with 128 LFOs and 64 EGs in the same box?), but - trust me - when it will be done, it will be a GREAT machine.

New Metasonix D-2000 Drum Machine

"This is the raw unprocessed output of a D-2000 being sequenced by a Delptronics Triggerman. First bass, then adding other drums, then cymbals, then changing to different rates and sequences. Yes, this is exactly what it sounds like. No, there are no effects or EQ added."

This one in via brian comnes.

Details via Metasonix:

"NOTE: the D-2000 will be exclusively sold only by Big City Music for the first year of availability. Please contact them to order.

It will blow your ass off. The D-2000 is an all-new design, based on our previous drum-sound simulation circuits. Unlike the previous D-1000, everything in the D-2000 has been tweaked and maximized and pushed. It is NOT intended for fast-and-dirty bland, conventional backing tracks, it is for the mad experimenter and the risk-taker and the experienced studio musician who wants extreme analog.

Each of the three tunable drums ("PITCHED DRUM") is made from a vacuum tube ringing bandpass filter, and can be tuned to sound from below 20 Hz to over 2 kHz using a "vactrol" photoresistor. They are also tunable with external control voltages (varying 0-5v), allowing complex patterns to be built up with external CV or pulse sources. Resonance of each PITCHED DRUM circuit is set by front-panel controls. Each circuit also has a "Drive" control, allowing the pulse input to be varied from complete shutoff (silence) to full sounding to overdrive. The PITCHED DRUMs are very similar to the R-54 module.

The two "cymbal" sound channels ("GATED NOISE") are based on an extremely primitive circuit, with white noise gated by a pentode tube. The "cymbal" attack and decay are knob-variable and the decay time is also CV variable, controlled by a slow-response "vactrol" photoresistor. Each GATED NOISE channel also has a treble rolloff tone control.

A "Link" switch connects the trigger inputs of the second GATED NOISE and first PITCHED DRUM channels, so they sound together. This allows simulation of a "snare" drum, if you can call it that.

Recessed buttons may be used to manually trigger each channel, in parallel with any trigger input pulses.

All five channel outputs mix to a single tube preamp that allows for severe overdriving via the mix-level controls. The preamp has an optional CV input that can be used to mute the output if desired (it must vary from -2v or less to totally mute the output to +5v or more for full volume). The distortion is either mild or brutal.

Because there are now far better trigger sequencers available on the modular-synth market than we can make, we chose to equip this rackmount device with no sequencer. Instead there is an 8HP space for a Eurorack sequencer or trigger generator. A power cable provides +12v and -5v and should power any trigger or gate generator that will fit in 8HP (most only need +12v power). We recommend either the Delptronics Triggerman or the ALM Pamela's Workout, both have been tested and are known to work very well. Trigger sequencers and generators from other modular synth equipment may also be used. The D-2000 trigger inputs will accept any pulse source: 0 to +5v, 0 to +10v, 0 to +15v, it doesn't matter. You can also run strong audio signals into the trigger inputs, they will mix with the noise in the GATED NOISE channels and convert the PITCHED DRUM channels into tunable bandpass filters. Try that with a digital sampled drumbox.

Ample inputs and outputs: mix output (with overdriveable tube preamp), separate outputs for each drum sound channel, external trigger inputs for each drum sound channel, and CV inputs for each drum sound channel. Use any pulse generator to drive the trigger inputs. Very short pulses are recommended for the pitched-drum triggers, and longer pulses for the cymbal triggers. The Triggerman and the Pamela's Workout are both capable of producing different pulse lengths on their separate outputs. They have very different user interfaces, so choose the one you prefer.

It's rude and immoral. It's not completely dead-silent and distortionless, and cannot be made so. No, it does not sound like a TR-606. The owner's manual is full of warnings for the idiots who often purchase our products, and claim they're "broken" when they're working perfectly. If you're one of those idiots, buy a nice Machinedrum or something and go away. We do not want you as a customer. Our products are for people with guts and raw talent in reserve, not for bar bands and chronic masturbators.

Specifications: Inputs and outputs 1/8" jacks, except main mix output on 1/4" jack. 3U high rackmount enclosure, protrudes behind panel less than 1.5" (not including Euro sequencer if one is installed) and tubes protrude above panel less than 1.75", weight (minus AC adapter) approx 5 lbs (3.7 kg). Power: 12 volts DC only, 2 amps. Power inlet: 2.1mm or 2.5mm coaxial jack. The D-2000 includes a "universal" AC-DC switching power supply accepting 100v to 240v mains, that may be used anywhere on earth, provided the correct AC power plug is attached (we can only supply North American power cords, adapters are available anyplace where travel supplies are sold). Tubes used: 2 x 6CB6/6CF6, 3 x 5U8 or 5GH8, 1 x 3AU6."

New dsp-Halo From DSP Synthesizers in the Works - mini 2GB SSD DIY Poly Sampler Synthesizer

Mini is an understatement. On the heals of the success of the dsp-G1 with Adafruit, DSP Synthesizers is working on a new 2 by 2.8 cm 2GB mini DIY polyphonic sampler synthesizer.

Via Jan, the man behind DSP Synthesizers:

"The follow up on the successful dsp-G1 chip is a great DIY Gigasampler. Measuring 2 by 2.8 cm it has 2GB samplestorage on Micro-SD SSD, playable over MIDI.

Yes, That is over 13h of samplestorage.  Storing all of its samples on the 2GB replaceable micro-SD it can take a new setup just by replacing the card. All in a 28-DIP pin space. Breadboard/Solder whatever.

This will be the coolest ever DIY Synthesizer/Sampler.

Most of the sampleplayers out there does a have bad implementation of playing triggered samples. This one plays MIDI keyboard notes straight from a 2GB SD card.

Polyphonic! All in a tiny DIY DIP solder package. It is definitely the coolest DIY pack to own. /Jan"

Ploytec produces fanciful firmware update for its super-small synthesizers

"SCHOPFHEIM, GERMANY: hardware and software developer Ploytec is proud to introduce its latest (V2.1) firmware update for its πλ2 MIDI- and πλ2 Leukos USB-powered, super-small footprint, software editing-enabled duophonic synthesizers at Musikmesse 2015, January 15-18 in Frankfurt, Germany...

The synth world was, quite frankly, taken aback by something so small sounding so huge when Ploytec’s ‘playful’ πλ2 made its impressive musical debut last year. This MIDI-powered, super-small synthesizer — with a super-small footprint fit for fitting into the smallest spaces — was soon joined by its USB-powered, super-small sibling, πλ2 Leukos, seriously satisfying those with a hardware craving to make music while on the move, wherever their inspiration might (literally) take them — with or without eminently portable laptops or an Apple iPad — with Camera Connection Kit — in tow (though these are always helpful to have at hand to power πλ2 Leukos, of course). Without wishing to sound silly, surely it’s impossible not to be impressed? It’s a knockout concept, after all!

As implied by their shared PI L Squared alternative appellation, πλ2 and πλ2 Leukos generally stick to the principals of subtractive synthesis, whereby the working waveform — bred by two square wave (pulse) oscillators — then travels through an adjustable — lowpass, high-pass, and bandpass — digital filter stage to transform the frequency spectrum and/or raise resonance, if desired. Digital filtering duly dispensed, an additional analogue lowpass filter follows forthwith. Destructive, digital-like tones balanced by all-the-rage analogue warmth are available at the press of a key. Could there be more? More than likely. Moreover, in fact, an analogue saturation stage at the output offers dynamic compression, adding a respectable bass punch to the proceedings — perfect for those that need to make some Boom! shake-shake-shake the room-style noise!

But beneath those tiny black (πλ2) and white (πλ2 Leukos) square-shaped exteriors — living in perfect harmony with Ploytec’s PI L Squared alternative appellation — lie a wonderful world of options for further sound-sculpting and manipulative performance possibilities, like LFO (Low Frequency Oscillator) modulation, PWM (Pulse Width Modulation), ADSR (Attack, Decay, Sustain, Release) envelope, plus play modes to make music performance more playful, whatever your musical leanings — LFO and envelope speed synchronise automatically to an external MIDI (Musical Instrument Digital Interface) clock, whereby both πλ2 and πλ2"
