1967 Rocky Mount Instruments ( RMI) Explorer Combo Organ

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.

via this auction

This is the same one in the video above.

"Extremely rare and unusual combo organ made by Allen Organ’s Rocky Mountain Instrument division in the late 1960s. This is a transistor based keyboard with an oscillator for each key and unique flying hammer system for asynchronous tremolo and delay like effects.

Preset sounds include: Trumpet, Post Horn, Clarinet, Gamba, Flute, Mandolin, Banjo..what really makes this instrument interesting are the effects - Short Sustain, Long Sustain, Strum, String Speech Accenter, Echo & Tremolo.

This Explorer is fully functional, it has been cleaned inside and out. It is in average cosmetic condition for these with some chipping of the painted plywood case. A new case could be constructed if desired but i chose to leave it be due to the extreme rarity of this instrument. All keyboard action felts have been replaced with parts supplied by Allen Organ, it plays and feels incredible compared to the other 2 I’ve serviced over the last decade. I also took the opportunity to recap the power supply with new high quality electrolytic capacitors for safety as the originals were beginning to leak.

Includes the original keyboard cover, a NOS power cord that I managed to hunt down at a surplus supply company and the original capacitors i removed from the supply."

Rare Vintage RMI DK-20 Digital Piano / Preset Synthesizer

A rare piece spotted by MATRIXSYNTH reader Kaden Harris on Craigslist.

"Here's your chance to own a rare early digital preset synthesizer! The DK-20 by Rocky Mount Instruments, Inc (RMI) was produced from 1979 to 1982. So rare, I can't find any demo videos of it on YouTube. It featured the latest digital technology at the time and I believe was one of the first digital pianos. 68 keys. Includes the volume pedal, sostenuto toe stud, and sustain pedal and legs/stand. You can control the decay curves, timing, and release characteristics along with mixers, phasers, and modifiers. Everything works. Asking $750."

Own a piece of history.
First portable digital synth!

This keyboard dates from 1974/1975. Considering its age, its in very nice cosmetic condition. All three outputs works. The pedals, pitch bend and all other functions of the keyboard work. Comes with original manual and service schematics and a huge pile of punch cards."

Check out the computer punch cards in the pics. You insert them in the slot on the right of the synth to program patches.  See the RMI label for additional posts featuring RMI keyboards.

"This rare early digital preset synthesizer powers on and is partially functional. The top 3 octaves play the internal preset sounds, some of the other control buttons seem to function, but the overall sound seems off and is severely out of tune.

This unit is being sold AS-IS with no functional guarantee, for parts & repair projects."

Synth Rorschach #43: Rogue Wave - "What Is Left To Solve" (Official Audio)

Published on Feb 8, 2016 Easy Sound Recording Co.

Whole lotta synth rorschach going on in this one. What do you see? For me, the punch cards reminded me of the 1974 RMI KC-1 Keyboard Computer ; the switches as well for that matter.

Prototype 1974 Vintage 1974 RMI KC-1 Keyboard Computer SN 509 with Punch-Out Card Reader

"Wow! This is the 1974 RMI Rocky Mount Instruments KC-1 Keyboard Computer! It has just arrived fresh from a Colorado Estate! I am still going through this incredibly rare synthesizer! This is the world's first portable digital synthesizer!! Less than 100 were ever made! That is the best guess as to how many were actually ever produced! The Keyboard Computer II, or KCII, followed this original KC1 version. That KCII model was offered from 1975 to 1982..

First users included Jean Michael Jarre and Garth Hudson, Uses the North American Rockwell MOS chip set that came right out of the NASA Space program from the 1960s!

10-voice polyphonic digital wavetable synthesizer with IBM punch card reader. I have about 50 IBM punch cards included in sale

This keyboard Pre-dates all PPG and Prophet digital synthesizers!

Low serial number- all wood enclosure-not the plastic top KC1 version- the selector buttons light up when selected as only the very first versions did!

61 key polyphonic-3 Audio channel output- 3rd channel was for white noise only

$4,495 in 1974"

Update via 909955847736 in the comments: "This is actually the prototype which was used on the demo record, ads, and promotional tours. It's very possible that only one of these was ever made. It's the only one with a wood body and illuminated switches. The production model Keyboard Computer (KCI) has a molded plastic body with non-lighted push-in/push-out buttons. And it also had a few differences in the voices and functions compared to this instrument. They are both portable versions of the Allen Theater Organ. The later KCII was not directly associated with any specific Allen organ model. None of the KC models qualify as a synthesizer any more than any other electronic organ did in 1974."

Vintage 70's RMI DK-20 digital synthesizer

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.

via this auction

Pic of the inside below.

via the seller: "Here is an interesting instrument that I have enjoyed playing over the years. The RMI DK-20. It has an analog/digital hybrid sound. The DK-20 was introduced in the late 70's and took advantage of the most advanced digital technology available at the time. After you select your sound you can control the decay time, the curve, the final release, then you can mix and modify the voice with phasers, filters, and other unique modifiers in the "Timbre" section of the control panel. You can really get some interesting sounds going by mixing and matching the voices with the phasers and the separate outs.

The sounds are very organic and useable. I love the sound of late 70s digital technology, it has a warmth and rawness that I love. I have owned several of these over the years and really enjoy them (that's my near mint RMI DK-20 on matrix synth from back in 2011)

I am pricing this one significantly cheaper than my other one because it is missing the lid and pedal. It uses the same lid as the RMI 368x and they made a million of those so that will not be too hard to replace. The DK-20 is a pretty rare keyboard and I rarely see them for sale so if you have ever wanted one it would probably be worth it to try and source a new lid and pedal."

Note the EKO COMPUTERRHYTHM & RMI SYNTH with punch card reader. You'll find two more videos previously posted here. I believe this video was originally posted there but it was pulled likely because of the music mentioned above.  I went ahead and replaced it with this newer upload.
