Eurorack "West Coast" Synth Voice Patch Breakdown / Tutorial

"This simple patch is a synth voice that is inspired by "West Coast" synthesizers like Buchla and Serge modulars from the 1960s and 70s. This patch also has a signal flow similar to the Make Noise 0-Coast. The basic idea behind the patch is to take a simple waveform and fold it to add harmonics, then a lowpass gate is used to control the dynamics of the sound.

Modules we used:
- AJH MiniMod Vintage Transistor Core VCO
- Random Source Serge Wave Multipliers
- Erica Synths Black Dual ASR EG
- Erica Synths Black LPG
- Korg SQ-1 Sequencer

The Patch:

- Audio
- VCO triangle or sine wave into the wave-folder audio input
- wave-folder audio out to the lowpass gate audio input
- the lowpass gate's audio out is the final output sound

- Control
- 1v/oct from sequencer or keyboard to osc 1v/oct input
- sequencer gate out to gate in on envelope generator
- envelope generator out to wave-folder CV input
- sequencer gate out to LPG "ping" input

Extra things to try out:
- the gate length of your sequencer will affect how plucky the sound is, so try adjusting it
- different wave-folders will have different sounds so try out a few if you have them
- if your wave-folder doesn't have a CV fold amount control you can use a VCA before the wave-folder and control that with the envelope
- if you don't have a lowpass gate you can try this patch out with just a filter or VCA after the wave-folder with an envelope opening it
- try other waveforms besides triangle and sine into the wave-folder
- try running more than one oscillator into the wave-folder and see how the multiple oscillators interact

"The Ensemble Oscillator by 4ms is a unified polyphonic voice of sixteen complex oscillators that combines additive, FM, phase distortion and wavefolding synthesis techniques in new, unorthodox ways. Being polyphonic here doesn't mean you can play all 16 oscillators directly. They share a single CV input, but you can very easily and quickly create your own scales to shape the chord the way you want it.
What really makes the Ensemble Oscillator special, however, is the sheer endless sonic possibilities offered by the Twist, Warp and Cross FM parameters. From sharp and cutting to wobbly and warm sounds, it's just a few twists on these three parameters. Although they are very complex operations, you never feel lost and wish for a reset button - quite the opposite, the work with the Ensemble Oscillator always feels simple and encourages you to explore areas you never even thought of before.
The Eurorack version of Jürgen Haible's legendary interpretation of the ultra rare Tau "The Pipe" Flanger from the 70s is a great analog effects unit that really breathes life into any sound. Random*Source's 18-pole phaser produces a powerful and unique phaser sound. It likes complex signals, like pads or FM sounds, but can also be pinged very well, for special percussive sounds - some of them at the end of this video."

"I was messing around with the Random*Source Serge Resonant EQ and realized how amazing it is at sculpting drones. The patch is pretty simple. There's a digital VCO lightly FM'ing an analog VCO and both signals are mixed before going into the Resonant EQ. After the EQ, the signal path goes to the Chronoblob delay, then the Phonogene, and finally into Typhoon (in Oliverb mode)."

"This a full explanation of the Serge Modular SSG in the Eurorack Format from Random*Source. Here is a text description below from their site:

SERGE SMOOTH & STEPPED GENERATOR (SSG)
The Serge Smooth & Stepped Generator (SSG) is a complex multi-functional module which can be patch programmed to provide various slew and sample functions both for audio and CV signals. It is one of the essential Serge modules.

The Smooth section will place a positive and negative slew on input voltage transitions for lag effects, voltage controlled portamento and for low frequency filter applications.” In Cycle-mode (cycle jack patched to the input), the Smooth side “will oscillate yielding a voltage controlled triangle wave LFO. A high level into the HOLD input will enable the Smooth Function to be used as a track-and-hold circuit with voltage controlled slew rate.

The Stepped function can be used as a sample-and-hold with voltage controlled slew rate limiting. In Cycle mode, a pulse applied to the Sample input will generate complex staircase waveforms for control voltage applications and for use as audio signals.

The Coupler is an internal comparator which compares the output levels of the Smooth and the Stepped Generators. This output is useful for generating complex control voltages or random voltages.

The Random*Source version of the Smooth & Stepped Generator for Euro is a licensed and authorized adaption of the original Serge design that provides an increased audio range of the Smooth Generator and a bipolar (“hot”) Coupler output in addition to the regular (unipolar) Coupler output."

"This listing is for a 2020 build of the Random Source Haible Krautrock Phaser, featuring a super-deluxe Van Daal Electronics Compact Phasing ‘X’ enclosure, original-spec incandescent bulbs, WIMA capacitors, Alpha pots, lovely Apem skirted knobs, etc. This unit also has rear switches for LFO/Manual and 2/4/6-stage selection. It has been tested fully working and ships calibrated with the IEC power cable required for operation.

PLEASE NOTE that this unit was built for North American standard voltage (120VAC) and will require a step-up transformer to work overseas.

The Gerd Schulte Compact Phasing ‘A’ is a legendary effect first built in Germany in 1972. Its ultra-thick, swirling sound can be heard on virtually every noteworthy electronic and rock record to emerge during that era, with acts such as Tangerine Dream making it a defining aspect of their sound. In 2007, Juergen Haible reverse-engineered the Schulte Phaser and made several noteworthy improvements, giving a new generation of musicians access to this timeless phaser."
