Live Dub Techno Workflow with Linked PLAYdifferently MODEL1 + 1.4 Mixers

video upload by Honeysmack

"In this video I link 2x PLAYdifferently mixers, the MODEL1 and MODEL1.4 for a 10 channel all hardware Dub Techno come Ambient improvisation. The first part of the video I walk through my workflow with this all hardware set up and how I perform in my studio. If you're familiar with how I make, you'll know that I consider my studio an "instrument', whereby I see each device within my studio is a module of my studio-instrument. Every device informs how I perform and compose "in the moment". There are no predetermined outcomes or painful rehearsal. In simple terms I choose several devices, ensure they are synchronised and away I go. Improvising through a process of construction and deconstruction layers of rhythms and sounds. Allowing happy accidents to inform the evolving performance. This jam was recorded in a single unedited improvised take.

The full live performance starts at 08:56. I've been a huge fan of the PLAYdifferently MODEL1 mixer for many years. It is at the heart of everything I do; performing live in front of an audience or in my studio. Recently I got the MODEL1.4 as it will be easier for taking out on the road... but then I thought it would also be highly useful in the studio when linked to the MODEL1.

Gear used in this video:
@playdifferently9439 MODEL1 and MODEL1.4 mixers.
@melbourneinstruments Nina, 12-voice poly synth providing the long ambient pads that transforms into a tinkle of melodic phrases.
Roland TR-909 is the solid rhythmic framework and anchor.
Roland TB-303 and TB-303 Devilfish adding the bubbling acid bass.
Roland TR-808 for some dirty outer-space electro drums running through a Korg Monotron Delay.
Elektron Octatrack is the master clock and resamples the small modular synth rack.
Elektron MachineDrum glitchy digital drum rhythms.
Elektron Syntakt provides a subtle layer of synth and drums.
Eventide Space and Time Factor - for reverb and dub delay echos.
Small modular synth rack, 62hp

AMSynth's Introduces the AM1013 Octave Fixed Filter Bank - Band Pass Perfection

video upload by AMSynths

"AMSynth launch the next 'lost module' of the ARP 2500. Eight 12dB fixed band pass filters in parallel, each with a nice gentle resonance. Individual outputs, mix outputs and a bypass feature. Perfect for post processing sounds, More resonance can be dialed in with VCA module feedback loop that uses the dual inputs and outputs."

"This 14HP module is a re-imagining of the ARP 1013 octave filter bank that was announced in 1970 by Tonus as part of the 2500 Synthesizer, but it never made it into production. It consists of eight band pass filters with their cutoff frequency spaced one octave apart, from 63Hz to 8kHz.

The filter is very useful for creating formant and vowel sounds. The individual outputs enable voltage control of the filter by using eight external VCA's - for example the 1032 Mixer & Distributor module.

The AM1013 is based on contemporary Op Amp based filter bank designs, such as the EMS Eight Octave Bank from April 1971. It uses a 12dB high pass filter in series with a 12dB low pass filter to create eight band pass filters that are connected in parallel and set one octave apart. The filters have a fixed frequency and Q of 5.0.

The eight filter outputs are mixed into a single output with two jack socket. Each filter can be adjusted for level using the ARP 2500 style control knobs. The input and output levels can also be adjusted using the front panel potentiometers.

High quality WIMA polypropylene capacitors have been used to ensure a beautiful sounding filter. The filter has a bypass feature which can be set using the push button switch (with green LED). The wide frequency range from 16Hz to 8KHz, Q of 5.0, individual outputs and high quality sound make for a unique module that takes its heritage from 1971.

The 1013 pairs nicely with the 1032 Mix & Distributor module, where each band pass filter output is patched into a VCA, enabling time domain mixing of the fixed filter sounds."

EP 2 - New 2500 Modules - AM1028 Seq Volts use cases

video upload by O.Z. Hall

See the announcement post here.

"This video is the second in a series on a number of new modules from Amsynths which are companions to the Behringer ARP 2500 series of eurorack modules.

This video explores the AM1028 Sequential Volts from Amsynths to expand the Behringer 1027 Sequencer in the 2500 series.

Here are excerpts from Amsynths description of this module:

This 8HP module expands the capability of the Behringer 1027 sequencer by adding an additional column of variable control voltages.

The eight steps of the 1027 are mirrored in the 1028 with three precision control voltage outputs; one at 2V for controlling VCO's and two at 10V for controlling filters, amplifiers and VC env gens.

The AMSynths AM1028 fills in a piece of history by recreating the Slave Module, which we call Sequential Volts.

Erica Synths Introduces Resonant Filter Bank & Expander Eurorack Modules

sound demo (part 1) video upload by Erica Synths

I believe this might be a rebranding of their Resonant EQ, previously featured here, and here. I'm not finding any mention of the EQ on their site, only the FB. Aside from the labelling, the modules look identicle.

"Timeline:
00:00 - Patch 1. Pico Voice in Supersaw mode through Resonant FB. Modulated with Octasource with EVENS hard panned to left and ODDS hard panned to the right therefore creating a stereo effect
01:02 - Patch 2. Black VCO II SAW through Resonant FB in Filter mode which is modulated with Octasource.
01:55 - Patch 3. Drumbreak sample through Resonant FB in Filter Bank mode modulated with Octasource and Modulator.
03:18 - Patch 4. No audio input. Resonant FB self oscillating and modulated with two LFOs from the Modulator.
03:59 - Patch 5. Sample played through Resonant FB in Filter Bank mode and modulated with Octasource and Modulator.
04:47 - Patch 6. Yocto 808 played through Resonant FB in Filter mode.
05:59 - Patch 7. No audio inoput. Resonant FB self oscillating with frequencies controlled via the expander."

"The Graphic Resonant Filterbank (FB) is a ten-band analogue filterbank with digital control over each bands’ boost or cut. Each band can be controlled individually via CV or manually, while complex control configurations turn the filterbank into an unconventional multimode filter and even an instrument in its own right when played with various resonance settings. The Expander module (works exclusively with the Graphic Resonant Filterbank and is available separately) provides hands-on adjustment of boost and cut for all bands.

The Expander module provides hands-on adjustment over all bands’ boost and cut without the need to select bands via pushbuttons on the Graphic Resonant Filterbank module. This makes sound design with the Graphic Resonant Filterbank much easier.

NB! The Expander works exclusively with the Graphic Resonant Filterbank!"

Intellijel Flurry: 3 Patches with Rainbow Mode 🌈

video upload by Intellijel

"Exploring one of our favourite features on Flurry 🌈

Rainbow mode gives you immediate access to all 16 of the digital noise algorithms on Flurry. The Morph control lets you scan through them manually, or you can patch in CV to modulate between Noise Types - and that’s where things get exciting! We’ve created 3 patches that put Rainbow mode to good use - helped along by Tangrams, Planar2, Sealegs and more!

The patches:

00:30 - Rainbow Rhythms 🌈

Noise type is sequenced and the output gated with the ‪@KorgOfficial‬ SQ-1, Tangrams and Amps. Planar mixes in S&H output with the sequence to randomise the noise type, as well as controlling delay & filter, to create fills. A great way to add playable rhythmic layers to your beats.

01:15 - Spectrum Steps 🌈

This patch uses sample & hold to randomly switch noise type with every note. Via tangrams VCA input, the digital noise swells and modulates the SVF cutoff frequency at audio rate. Imagine a prepared piano, but the objects inside are constantly moving between keys.

02:05 - Chaotic Dispersion 🌈

All hell is breaking loose in “Chaotic Dispersion”, and Planar2 is driving! With every joystick movement, a chain of events is set in motion - Noise type changes with position, as does the VCO pitch and delay settings. Gate from Planar2 triggers Tangrams which ramps up the pulse rate. The outputted pulse feeds Tangrams other envelope, which rapidly triggers the PLPG before slowing to a steady tick. This one is a lot of fun!"

🙏 Tiptop Audio RS909 🙏 🎧 (no talking) 🎧

video upload by Cutoff Frequency - gear stuff (no talking)

"This is a video demonstrating the sounds of the RS909 by TipTop Audio.

What can you expect from a modular rim shot? Well I was hoping for a high quality reproduction of the TR-909, which I got. It is a well put together sound module that cuts nicely through the mix. However, I was also hoping for some wildness, some creativity that goes well beyond the original. Unfortunately I didn't get that. The knob turning doesn't really inspire me to take the music to a new place. Still, a really nice rim shot though!

Geometric Anomaly | by This Is Not Rocket Science

video upload by Cinematic Laboratory

"The Geometric Anomaly earned SonicState's 'best of modular' on Superbooth 2024 so I am proud to present it to you. However...
Only 50 were made and some are 'reserved', whatever that means.
So how does this work?

TiNRS is basically Stijn and Priscilla Haring-Kuipers from Amsterdam so it's a small independent manufacturer with limited resources. Stijn made the Geometric Anomaly 'for his birthday', so the plan was to make only one. Then Priscilla said something like 'nice, get yourself a different present, and build a few more, like 50'. Anyway, the Geometric Anomaly is a very limited edition and time will tell how limited it really is. If I am informed correctly, they ran out of parts to build more.

I am a big fan of TiNRS, so I bought one and I'll treat it as any other new module worthy of a cool video.

TiNRS likes to perform live, and usually they had to drag a big Fenix IV modular synth to a gig. The Geometric Anomaly is a slimmed down mini Fenix with two VCO's, ADSR envelope generators and filters. One SVF, one Ladder. It looks like a complex VCO, but I'd describe it as a 'live performance synth' that's made to tweak on stage. It can make huge sounds with minimal effort but it also provides plenty of resources to go 'complex' if you really want to. It may not be 'best of modular', but I think it deserves the predicate 'best new VCO for live performers'. But I am biased, so just listen and decide for yourself.

I could use the fortcoming 'Bopp & Steve' effect module in this video, but I need to emphasize that it's a prototype and there's still a lot of work to be done because the planned DSP chip was recently updated and a rewrite is necessary. I'll keep you posted."

Threetom Modular MIXING FLASK

See this previous post for a demo.

"The Threetom Modular 'Mixing Flask' is a utility mixer offering mix-bus limiting and a cornucopia of indicator lights integrated behind a unique chemical lab-inspired front panel.

I designed Mixing Flask as a solution to my main three gripes with conventional utility mixers:

Mixing too hot is too easy, leading to hard clipping on the mix-bus. And even when there’s an indicator light to warn you when this is happening, there are no features to actively prevent it.

Utility mixers usually only offer unity gain, so when you have a weak input signal (like a MTM Radio Music), you’re out of luck

They’re nauseatingly boring

Mixing Flask provides solutions to these annoyances in the following ways:

I’ve implemented a soft-clipping limiting circuit on the mix-bus (inspired by Doppio). The highest setting prevents the mix-bus from hard clipping altogether in favor of warm saturation.

All inputs have a gain of +6dB allowing you to better equalize between volumes while maintaining a hot mix-bus output

The myriad of indicator lights and front-panel graphics make you feel like a mad scientist in your modular chemical lab. I bet you won’t find another utility mixer that makes mixing more exciting than Mixing Flask!

Mixing Flask will be available soon after Dutch Modular Fest, both from my retailers and in my own shop!"

CerasusMixer - Digital Controlled Analog Mixer (日本語解説)

video upload by centrevillage

"Cerasus Mixer is a 5 channel digital controlled analog mixer. Designed as the ideal mixer for compact live systems.

It has two AB stereo outputs, and you can set which output to assign to each channel.

Channels 1 to 3 are monaural input channels, and 4 to 5 are stereo input channels. Channels 2 to 5 allow CV control of volume level, and channels 2 and 3 also allow CV control of pan.

The audio signal path is all analog and uses an SSI2164 VCA for volume control, resulting in low noise and good sound quality.

Thanks to digital control, it takes up only 12 HP of space and provides the following features:

- Mute with button
- Trim level settings for each channel
- Limiter settings for each channel
- Accent or ducking effects on each channel
- LED displays each channel volume and peak level
- Change panning type (linear or constant power)

Multiple Cerasus Mixers can be chained together, in which case they can be used as a mixer with 10 or more input channels.
