pnw synth meeting 2008

via Gary Leder's Photos

That was actually my gear. A TR-909 I picked up at a pawn shop in Maui for $190 (see the bottom story here), my first synth, an Oberheim Matrix-6 (hence matrix), a pink and red Thingamagoop, Gaken SX-150, Handspring Visor running Mini Music, and a Malekko ID-600 Analog Delay pedal.

Note MATRIXSYNTH Ts are comming. I just picked them up from the shop yesterday. The green on these are perfect and in black light it glows like a mother. Once I figure out how much they cost to ship, I'll be putting them up for sale. I gave a bunch away at the event and people seemed to like the quality of them. I got them done at Gorilla Screen Printing. They do pretty amazing work. They do the Ts for Sub Pop Records and they are very affordable. Check out their website. If you contact them, let them know matrix sent you.

"Lorne Demos the Sequential Circuits Model 700 Sequencer programmer at the Pacific Northwest Synth Gathering 2008" Note his comment on how this may be the first voltage controlled memory. You save your settings for each step which the sequencer then runs through. You can find some good images of the Model 700 here.

A couple of notes on this one:
1. In the beginning you hear John say something followed by everyone laughing. What he said was, "I'm John L. Rice and I've been addicted to synthesizers for..." Classic.

2. You can see the chrome screws on his MOTM that he refers to in this video here.

Oberheim Live on the I-5

YouTube via kidtronic

"An Oberheim minisequencer (#10) driving the SEM 2 oscillator synth fed into a Korg Tape echo which is on top of George's modular. The room is an unsuspecting hotel off the I-5 in Bellingham (has a cool radio museum and growlers). We were travelling down from Canada to the Pacific Northwest 2008 synth meet in Renton the next morning. The lower right corner of the sequencer is the rate knob. If you pull it up sequence two determines the length of time for each note. On the SEM the bottom rows are envelope ADSR settings. Usually the weird sounds come from other rooms..."

Update: Just a quick note on these videos: They are not meant to be performances and they are not prepped. The gathering is very informal. People get together and just set up their gear followed by walking around, checking gear out and talking shop. After lunch (some good pizza) we typically go around the room one by one and just talk about the gear we brought. It's not scripted and it's not a performance, so don't think of these videos as "taped for YouTube." They are not. They are however meant to give you an idea of what these events are like. I went to the SIDY event in the UK this year and it was very much the same minus the talks.

BTW, if you gave a talk at the event and prefer I not put it up, shoot me an email. My contact info is on the bottom right of the site.

"I'm playing one for the first time at the PNW synth meet. R2D2 in a box and then some. I'm filming with one hand and playing with the other and your not getting (from the camera) the full two channel nature of the flame. Got me grinning, quite a mad bit of gear."

"sidecars demos the Haken Continuum, Yamaha Tenori-On, Digital Trumpet, and C-Thru Axis controller at the Pacific Northwest Synth Gathering 2008."

Note more videos will follow. I have over an hours worth, so they will go up between posts. Remember, you can click on the pnw2008 label below for all posts on this year's event. Also, I unfortunately ran out of space midway through the talks and had to switch to my digital camera for images and video. That ran out about three quarters of the way through, so apologies to those I missed.
