ambient talkie: ep 35 - PLINKY!

video upload by tworoundrobins

"ever since I saw loopop's video on Plinky I wanted to own one but since it was never in stock and the second hand units cost an arm and a leg I was never able to play on one. well, Plinky has since went fully open source and once I remembered that this thing is now ready to go I was more than happy to see people building them - I took the opportunity and got myself a lovely clone "plinki" which is functionally completely the same as its original V2. in this episode I try to present a basic overview into a very promising ambient companion."

Modular Multi-Tap Delays // OAM Time Machine (FIRST PATCH EXPLORATION)

video upload by DivKid

"Here's my raw, unedited and literal first patch and experience with the Time Machine Eurorack module from OAM (Olivia Artz Modular). I've been excited for this one since I first saw it, I'm a huge delay fan and a multi-tap delay with loads of control was bound to have me interested!"

via OAM

Time Machine is a tactile interface for mixing together 8 delay lines with an input signal. At least that was the plan. We made a prototype and got like 300% funded on kickstarter, so we got to work.

As the DSP engine was refined a sonic character emerged that howls like guitar feedback while granulizing like the grey goo at the end of the universe. We leaned into this. The resulting module can create clocked rhythmic glitch effects, reverbs, chaos, and ego-death.

5 Things you can do with the Opp Ned arpeggiator module from Noise Engineering

video upload by Noise Engineering

"We're featuring 5 things the Opp Ned arpeggiator can do, and if you find this helpful, let us know in the comments!

0:09 Custom Arps
0:49 Arp Sequencing
1:44 Transpose
2:36 Play that Reset
3:08 Arps for CV

More about Opp Ned: https://bit.ly/4a2UwvU

Watch the official Opp Ned demo video: [posted here]

Opp Ned comes with 12 pre-programmed arpeggios, including tetrads, major, pentatonic major, minor third, and pentatonic minor arps, but the Load/Edit/Save functionality makes it easy to create your own custom patterns. Factory presets can easily be restored at the Noise Engineering Customer Portal.

Opp Ned features four outputs that can be individually advanced: a reset input to keep all your patterns in time and a Transpose input to easily create changes on the fly. The octave range, arpeggio direction, and pattern of the arp are all configurable, and all settings are CV-able."

"Vector Sequencer, QV-L, nRings, Weston Precision Audio SF1, 4MS DLD

So really I am testing the ATEM MINI PRO and headset mic here. I think I got it close but when I started dialing the grit in using the LEVEL on the SF1 you can really hear it pushing (which is a good thing, but less good for video levels). This is fun."

MJ’s “Thriller” Monster Growl Bass | Synth Breakdown

video upload by Anthony Marinelli

"Join me for a detailed breakdown of how to create the Monster Growl Bass from Michael Jackson's iconic song "Thriller". I programmed this big "phat" swooping bass sound on a Minimoog Model D synthesizer while in the room with Michael, album producer Quincy Jones, songwriter Rod Temperton and keyboard player Greg Phillinganes. We'll get into all the settings that you'll need to know whether you have a hardware synth or plug-in. Also, the techniques I discuss about creating sounds can be applied to any style of music.
This sound occurs only one time in the song (at the end of the bridge) but serves as an important example about thinking dramatically when arranging and orchestrating. Rod Temperton employed this mind set when orchestrating and arranging throughout the Thriller album. Every sound serves a specific function that's related to the sound(s) before it and that's related to the listeners emotions. This is key lesson I learned working with Quincy and Rod. In this case the Monster Growl Bass is a one-time featured sound that kicks off the ever elevating and evolving 2nd half of the song."

PATCH EXPERIMENT / exploring processing external sounds with DELAY 1

video upload by Joranalogue Audio Design

"Usually 'Karplus Strong' is used as a term for a certain type of synthesis, using ultra short delays to create string like resonators. I've found that when you just run a sound through a processor like that, it adds a wonderful gliss of resonating frequencies. I honestly don't know if this is just the same thing as phasing/flanging but it sounds interesting to me. DELAY 1 is a great tool for this as its short delay times lend itself really well to this type of Karplus Strong processing.

Check out the video if you want to watch a longwinded experiment on this subject.

I hope you find it inspiring.

Overlooked Module #14: Synthrotek CF Crossfader
