Roberson Audio RA Mowg, Oddy-Free and Prophanity

via Roberson Audio

"RA Mowg

The Roberson Audio Synthesizers interpretation of the MiniMoog Model D synthesizer."

From the ReadMe file:
“This synth is meant to be a model of the Minimoog Model D synthesizer, and a lot of time was invested to get it the way it sounds, including oscillator and filter character as well as modulation struction and response.

A few notes to keep in mind before you get to playing with it:
-The synth was built with 48khz sample rate in mind, so it may not sound the same in other sample rates (generally though, higher will not have negative effects)

-Even though a mod wheel is not present in the graphical portion of the synth, using the mod wheel on your keyboard still has the same effect as the real synth

-There is a switch on the synth for an external input. In a real Minimoog, this could receive any audio input, but for this plug-in it has been hardwired as a feedback loop from the audio output of the synth. Be careful pushing the volume of it too high!

-The synth is completely monophonic, with priority given to last note played. Realism has been sacrificed for playability, but I believe it is a good trade-off in this instance.

-Update Version 1.2 *IMPORTANT*

-Made a few modifications, basic playability is largely unchanged. Most mods came in the form of filter modifications, it is BIG sounding now. Also, can resonate itself into oblivion, which itself can be dependent on what sample rate you are using, so BE CAREFUL. You’ve been warned. Some patches from prior versions may then have problems or may cause unwanted side-effects, so load them with caution.

Any updates will be reflected in this document with the corresponding update packs. If you have any questions or comments about the synth, you may refer them to blu_gruv@lycos.com, or contact me on KVR Audio under the screen name “Chris Roberson”.

Artwork for the instrument was provided by Modeler of KVR Audio forums. Truly brilliant work if I do say so myself.

I hope you enjoy using the synth, and look forward to hearing what you have to say about it.

Cheers,
Chris Roberson
Roberson Audio Synthesizers”

From the Readme file:

'The absolutely fantastic artwork and GUI were done by androidlove and Modeler of KVR, many many
thanks to him as the synth just wouldn’t be the same without it.

Now onto business…

The Oddy-Free is quite apparently a emu of an Arp Odyssey Mk.II, and much attention
to detail was given in the layout of the signal path to have it behave as accurately
as possible. Granted it does have just a touch more umph than most originals would,
this particular emulation was based on the “illegal” filter versions based on Moog’s
-24dB Low-Pass filter, so it sounds quite a bit smoother and richer but at the same
it can produce the harsh metallic tones known from the Odyssey.

I really hope you enjoy the synth, I know that I enjoyed making it. It brings me joy to
release free models of synth emulations that otherwise one may have to pay out the nose
to get.

If you liked the synth and/or were able to find good use of it, please vote for me
and it as the number one entry in the KVR Developer Competition ’07.
——————————————————————————————

Update Version 1.1
Changes:
–new face panel, a little bit of a more realistic touch.
–fixed spelling issues on face panel
–fixed masking problem with slider cap graphics, so there is no longer the black box
around the caps (rather nice fix)
–added “analog” features, including oscillator and filter instability, along with a few
minor affects on related components, also a very subtle power supply bleed-over to
related components.
–added a slight filtering to the final output to reduce the unrealistic high end of the Oddy
just a slight amount for accuracy purposes.
–added voltage and amplification mods to waveforms to enhance edginess of waveforms
and certain modulations (you may need to correct previously made patches.)
–added user-made patch banks and individual FXP files for the Oddy, hopefully you’ll enjoy. :)
–and probably some other things I forgot at 2 in the morning. :D

Updated Version 1.2
Changes:
–numerous internal changes to oscillator structure, including totally different oscillators to begin with
–modified filter to behave differently and a little more “analog”.
–removed much pre-EQ in the signal path, making it a much easier to mix instrument
–removed older user patch banks from pack, they became incompatible with new oscillators and filter.”

-Update Version 1.4 *IMPORTANT*

-Made a few modifications, basic playability is largely unchanged. Most mods came in the form of filter modifications, it is BIG sounding now. Also, can resonate itself into oblivion, which itself can be dependent on what sample rate you are using, so BE CAREFUL. You’ve been warned. Some patches from prior versions may then have problems or may cause unwanted side-effects, so load them with caution.

Cheers,
Chris Roberson
Roberson Audio Synthesizers"

From the ReadMe file:

“Hi and thanks for downloading Prophanity, the Prophet 5 clone.

I know it’s been a long time coming, so I hope you enjoy.

There isn’t a terrible lot to say for the synth, it’s a model of the Sequential Circuits Prophet 5. Much time was given for attention to detail in nearly every aspect of the instrument, and most every subtlety has been accounted for.

The excellent artwork was done courtesy of Modeler of KVR audio.

If you have any comments or requests or problems/questions with the synth, my email is blu_gruv@lycos.com, and can also be found at www.myspace.com/mrblugruv.

Hope you enjoy the synth.

UPDATE VERSION 1.1:

-Added unison mode

-implemented new oscillators, which behave more accurately in poly-mod section

-modified filter design to sound more pleasing

-changed envelope response to exponential, no more linear envelopes

-added per-voice instability, to simulate the multiple signal path architecture of the original

UPDATE VERSION 1.2:

-fixed some oscillator distortion problems

-massively overhauled filter/preEQ to make it more pleasing and technically correct

-many small adjustments to hone behavior to that which is closer to original

-Update Version 1.4 *IMPORTANT*

-Made a few modifications, basic playability is largely unchanged. Most mods came in the form of filter modifications, it is BIG sounding now. Also, can resonate itself into oblivion, which itself can be dependent on what sample rate you are using, so BE CAREFUL. You’ve been warned. Some patches from prior versions may then have problems or may cause unwanted side-effects, so load them with caution.”

The end result of all this is a (hopefully) more true-to-life representation of the original. As mentioned above, direct any questions to blu_gruv@lycos.com, www.myspace.com/mrblugruv, or find me on KVR under the user name “Chris Roberson”.

Sincerely,
Chris Roberson."

Christmas Lights 🎄 in Madrid

video upload by Oblivion Corner

Music and video by supporting member, Oblivion Corner.

"Took the Navibus to see the city's Christmas Lights in Madrid. Filmed the various holiday lights and Madrid city streets such as Gran Via and Cibeles. Celebrate the bright colors and city architecture on display. Wishing you all joyful Season's Greetings.
#christmaslights #madrid #fujixt4

This Fuji video test was shot from the top floor of the Navibus, using the Fuji XT4 camera paired with a Fujinon XF 23mm f2 lens. The video format settings for the original footage were Eterna film simulation, 4K 50p with a bitrate of 200 Mbps in Long GOP compression.

The video from the Fujifilm X-T4 was then edited and color graded in Final Cut Pro where certain clips were also additionally stabilized in software. This was in addition to IBIS on the Fuji camera which was set to active (but without boost or camera DIS).

A Failure of Imagination (i) // Shot on Fuji XT4

video upload by Oblivion Corner

"Music by Cybersyn. Used with permission by Oblivion Corner.
Full Album available now: https://synthandsundry.bandcamp.com/a...
For inchoate ramblings, read on ...

A cold concrete bench on a seasonably warm day is a slice of heaven. Add to that a location in a quiet corner and we are proverbially off to the races. This video features a track that was set to be included in a concept album about Cybersyn, a forward-thinking 70s antecedent to the internet and ‘big data’, being fictionally smuggled out of Chile just as the democratically-elected government collapsed due to the autocratic onslaught by brutal forces backed by the CIA and US corporations, named and unnamed, since those events. Thinking of what could have been is always a wistful exercise when it comes to technology.

This music imagines a form of progressive technocracy as the backbone of the technological developments that occurred in France throughout the 70s and 80s: high speed rail, space launch systems, interactive information systems accessible to all and a home computing revolution. The fictional machination of the album linked above imagines that all this national progress was enabled by the visionary capabilities of Cybersyn. Once more, it’s worth emphasizing that this is fiction. France did develop Ariane rockets, Minitel information terminals and the TGV high speed rail network but this was primarily thanks to the decisive actions of the government of the time which pushed these projects forward.

However, the idea of Cybersyn and the future it potentially augured has both a more sinister and melancholic side too. This is also represented in the music and visuals of this video. The influences here are two-fold, cinematic and literary. First of all, there’s la Nuit des Traquées (Night of the Hunted) the under-appreciated B-movie by Jean Rollin, starring the incomparable Brigitte Lahaie. The premise is that a nuclear accident has caused the emission of dangerous fast moving particles that have affected people in the surrounding area, causing amnesia and a loss of cognitive ability. A shadowy organisation has detained and subsequently relocates those affected to an ominous corporate skyscraper as the victims devolve into haunted animalistic shadows of themselves. Secondly, Les Forteresses Noires a novel by Patrick Grainville about a banker, a nightshift doctor, a sculptress and teenagers worshipping an odd assemblage of sewage rats. The common element here is that both the film and the novel are set in La Défense business district in Paris.

The location captured in this video is very much reminiscent of the architecture and solitary concrete corners of La Défense business district. The ominous nature of corporate architecture as well as the promise and paranoia of technology are the notions being conveyed here. However another idea that lies at the foundation of this music and album it was going to part of is “what could have been”. Namely, how would technology have evolved if at every fork the market forces of shortsighted thinking, cost-cutting and convenience had not been heeded. For example, what if Betamax had become the dominant video format of the 80s? What if France had pursued its homegrown CYCLADES network protocol instead of the X.25 based TRANSPAC standard? What if PC compatibles had never become as ubiquitous? What would the technological landscape look like now? This track and all the others featured in the album above (they will get their own videos in due course) aim to give a feeling of what that would have been like interspersed with the aforementioned intrigues and ideas.

This video was filmed with the Fujifilm XT4 camera using the Fujinon XF 23mm f2 lens.

Interview with Hexfix93 of VAC

The following is an interview I just wrapped up with hexfix93 of Velvet Acid Christ. As you know, this site is about the gear, namely synths, and the gear that helps drive and enhance synths, but ultimately the focus is on synths.

I was chatting a bit with hexfix93 and asked him if he would be interested in a slightly different take on an interview, one focused on synths and their impact to his world. We all have our story regarding how our obsession with synths first started, how we see and approach synths and what they mean to us. I thought it would be interesting to hear his story. The following is the interview.

Before it begins, I want to thank hexfix93 for taking the time out for this. We all have a different approach and a different story when it comes to our synths. This is his. For more of his music check out VAC and don't miss Toxic Coma. Cheers, matrix.

1. What was your first synthesizer, how old were you when you picked it up, and why did you pick it up?

"It was some kind of old yamaha cheap thing. i got it for my atari st, so when i played games like leisure suit larry that the music wouldn't come from the wimpy fm built in sound, but a general midi synth instead. it really didn't sound all that great. i wasn’t really a keyboard player at this point.

The first synth i got as a keyboard player was a roland w30 sampler workstation. And we made like 3 records with that keyboard. i remember gary slaughter an x vac member, spilled orange vodka drink on it. and i had to take it apart and clean every part of it by hand slowly, it took weeks. it was a pure nightmare.

Oblivion - Exploring Moog One with 5U Modular Synthesizer

Ariyo Shahry

"Moog One is an impressive synthesizer. I could have easily done this entire track on the Moog One (except drums). This synthesizer is so powerful and is capable of so much yet it can so easily sit within the mix. In this case it basically made the track. I went from an idea to a wall of warm analog goodness with just a simple patch on the Moog One.

The base of my modular system system is a Synthesizers.com System 66. Over time I've added other modules to my system.

Multitrack recording and drums are programed using Logic Pro X
The video is shot on Fujifilm XT3 camera body with a Fujifilm XF 56mm F/1.2 and Fujifilm XF 16mm F1.4 Lenses.

In this video the following modules are featured:

- Moon Modular M 569 Quad Sequential Voltage Source
- Moon Modular M 543 Stereo Output Mixer
- Moon Modular M 568 Quad Sequential Trigger Source
- STG Soudlabs Sea Devils Filter
- FSFX 102 Granular Audio Processor (5U / MU format adaptation of the Mutable Instruments Clouds)
- Dove Audio WTF Oscillator
- CorSynth C107 Quad Linear VCA/VC Mixer
- Synthesizers.com Q150 Transistor Ladder Filter
- Synthesizers.com Q106 Oscillator (VCO)
- Synthesizers.com Q109 Envelope Generator
- Synthesizers.com Q110 Noise Source"

Oberheim TEO-5 - Unboxing and Preset Playthrough

video upload by Riffsthatrule

"Just got a brand new Oberheim TEO-5 in and thought I'd do another unboxing and preset playthrough video. I know these types of videos are very helpful in making purchase decisions so hopefully it'll help some of you!

My thoughts: This thing sounds huge, raw and organic! You can modulate yourself into oblivion if you want, sequencer is very powerful and the raw tone speaks for itself. I highly recommend!

*Side note - EVERYTHING you hear in this video is the raw tone from the synth. No external effects or plugins were used*
