Additional Tone Tweakers Listings, also on Reverb

"This is a 3 rack set of hard to find pre-assembled Blacet Modular frac rack compatible modules. Fracrack or fractional rack modules were the precursor to eurorack modulars, and some feel they sound better than the euro rack standard. Some of these modules were factory assembled and some were not. There are a couple partially cut wires in the non-factory assembled modules that we will probably remove entirely before shipping. All modules were tested individually in another system and determined to be working properly. Power supply and and rack enclosure are not included. If you need a power supply, please email us as we may be able to provide one for an additional cost.

RIP John Blacet

It has come to my attention from Joshua Shroyer that John Blacet passed away on June 22 after a battle with cancer. There is a thread on his passing at Muff's as well. The news comes as a bit of a shock. The last email I received from the Blacet newsletter was dated June 19, with only "Sorry, closed for now.....". I thought this was in reference to the latest sale. The email I had prior to this, dated April 18, was for a Rak-3 sale. There was no hint of his cancer or condition. John was extremely private. He reached out to me back in October of 2017 for a banner on the site. He continued the banner through December of 2018 and then just kind of disappeared. His communication was always brief and non personal. I respected that and I respected his privacy.

The Blacet website is currently down: http://www.blacet.com. The first two images in this post are from the Internet Wayback Machine, dated June 22, 2019.

I'm assuming anyone that comes to this site is familiar with Blacet and his Frac rack format modules. The Blacet.com domain name was registered back on June 6, of 1999. He was creating modular synths before the modular scene became popular, before eurorack took off. Back then Frac was king for many. Blacet along with Modcan and Cynthia were it. Eurorack may have taken over, especially now that there is a market to support it, but back then, pioneers like John Blacet provided a small oasis for the world of modular, after years, if not decades, of being forgotten for mainstream synths. John helped keep the modular world alive, when by all circumstances it should have been lost. We have him and the handful of botique manufacturers to thank for what we have now. He will always be appreciated on this site. Not only for his creations, but also for his support. His banner will remain in the banner archives, and his label will live on.

The following is from the front page of his website:

"Be inspired by the sounds, colors and shapes of nature. Find new sounds with some of our electronic music kits. Featuring everything you need to easily achieve kit building success, our kits are complete with beautiful front panels, PCBs and all the parts needed, right down to the power cable. Dedicated to Frac Rak. +/- 15 volt power and power supply protection on each module.

Our complete documentation is second to none and our module quality and feature set is legendary. Decades of experience and craftsmanship means that you can count on Blacet. Complete kits or factory assembled."

---

Apparently John was also into planes. The following is from a thread on taptalk mentioning his passing on June 22:

"John Blacet passed away June 22 at home in Lakeview after battling cancer for a year.

John was an early Sonoma Wings member who flew with us locally, in Nevada, Idaho, and the Owens Valley.

He made the first Sonoma Wings web sites.

His Atos B was for sale on www.cloudbasecafe.com and his family hopes the Atos and trike will find a good home.

Blacet Time Machine - BBD Analog Delay

via this auction
"What is it??
This is a voltage-controlled BBD analog delay module, typically found inside a larger modular synthesizer setup. However the unit can also be used on it's own - but in either case it requires a +/-15v power supply, which is not included in this auction. The module is designed for to handle 10v AC audio signals, and to use up to 10 volts of DC for CV (control voltage) control of it's various parameters.

At its heart, this module is built around a 4096-stage, 1980's analog BBD (bucket-brigade delay) chip. This means analog delay. This means dirty, evolving echos, and haunting flanges & choruses. The famous modulated delays found in dub music are child's play for this module. With analog delay units, the pitch of the repeats changes when the delay time changes, which gives them a very different sound and feel from their digital counterparts, and is the main reason why they remain so popular in the modern, digital age.

Oh, if you are wondering, YES it can easily do the 'infinite wall of feedback building and building into pure insanity' thing, just crank up the 'Regen' knob and cover your ears.

OK then, but what makes it so special?

The Blacet Time Machine is considered one of the most powerful and desirable analog delay units of all time. There were between 200-250 made, and they were discontinued in the fall of 2005. Blacet has stated that they will never return to production. The issue is in the availability of the rare analog BBD chip inside the unit - they have not been manufactured since the 1980's, and the supply has simply become too limited to make building more units feasable. It is truly the end of an era. Time Machines always sell very quickly when they show up on the used market, and the price seems to climb a little bit every few months.

What makes this unit special compared to most analog delay units is the provision of CV (control voltage) inputs for EVERY PARAMETER. This creates a monster which can be fully controlled by other modules and voltage sources (including audio!) within your setup. On top of this, the unit includes a built in modulation LFO (with rate and depth controls - and of course the option to override it - or mix it - with an external modulation signal) and - now this is the special part - Blacet's peerless compander system.

What's a compander system? Well, the main problem with analog delays is NOISE. A bit of noise and grit is desirable in these units, and adds to their character. But extraneous levels of noise - and in particular clock noise, are not desirable effects at all. It is the 'bleeding' of clock noise (the clock is required to manage the timing of the BBD device, which thus controls the delay time) into the output signal that can be heard to some extent in just about every other analog delay unit out there. Clock Noise is the one big downfall to analog delay designs. Blacet has solved this with their wonderful compander system. In a nutshell, the input signal is compressed, sent through the BBD circuitry, and then expanded again, while being gently filtered to remove whatever clock noise still creeps in after the compander system. This also works to solve the other problem with analog delays, which is interfacing the limited signal range of the BBD device with the (typically much larger) signal ranges that are being used in your studio.

As a final, super cool extra bonus (in case there weren't enough features already jammed into this little monster!), both the modulation setting and the delay output have 'cancel' (and 'reset') inputs, which are often overlooked by many Time Machine owners, but are in my opinion a wonderful feature allowing the creation of gated and 'sequenced style' delay patterns in your music.

So what?

The result of all this is a dead quiet, ultra-powerful analog delay unit that makes no compromise in terms of onboard features, manual control or voltage control and automation. It's no wonder they are so famous and desirable.

And it's no wonder why it is breaking my heart to sell it. Believe me, these are truly excellent units, there's nothing out there like them at all. Feature lists can be read and compared all day long, ultimately it is all about the sound - and this is one area where the Time Machine blows away all expectations. No searching for the 'right setting' - no! Within about 5 seconds of plugging something into this module - YOU'LL KNOW. You really will. You'll just know, m'kay?

Details -

This started its life as one of the original units, a Revision 'A', and has subsequently been upgraded to Rev. B by John Blacet himself (see below). The unit was not originally factory built, but was built from kit by a good friend of mine who is a professional electrician, and a radio and amp geek. He is always soldering something, and his work is absolutely top-notch, as good as the Blacet factory. The unit is in EXCELLENT condition, has been kept lovingly under dustcovers in a smoke-free, cat-free, clean studio. The unit is FULLY FUNCTIONAL in every respect, and all pots are smooth and silent.

In the summer of 2007, the module was sent to John Blacet (my electrician friend has sadly moved away, and I have no soldering skills myself) to be upgraded to a Revision 'B' spec. John went over the entire module while it was in his hands, and made sure everything was solid - he commented to me that the quality of work was excellent, and that there was nothing at all to be concerned with. When the module was returned to me it had been upgraded to Rev. B and the one issue with the original design (raretimes crashing of the internal clock) has been successfully resolved.

This is a top-notch unit, and will bring many years of joy to its new owner."

Oakley, MOTM and Blacet Modular Synthesiser

Title link takes you to shots pulled from this auction. Details saved below.

"Custom built “one off” large format Modular Synthesiser in Mint condition and perfect working order. It has been custom built from the very best of Oakley Sound, MOTM, Blacet, Encore and Tellun System modules, with custom engraved stunning looking electric blue front panels and a solid American Oak case. It has been designed and built to the highest standards, and has two separate power supplies, a Power One 1.7Amp PSU for analog modules and a Power One 800ma PSU for the “dirtier” digital modules. This arrangement keeps the soundpath noise free.

I built this modular without regard to cost and for my own personal use, it has a wide variety of filters so that as well as making all of the usual (and unusual J )modular sounds, it will also mimic a lot of old school Analog synths – the Oakley VCO’s are based on the Minimoog core, so in conjunction with the Oakley Superladder moog filter you can get perfect Minimoog and Moog Modular sounds, or use the MOTM 440 for Pro 5 sounds, the MOTM420 for Korg MS20 sounds, The MOTM410 for Korg PS3200 sounds, the MOTM480 for Yamaha CS80, the MOTM485 for Yamaha GX1 etc. BUT it also includes 2 Blacet Miniwaves with optional PPG wavetable ROMS, so wire in a couple of the Miniwaves and use them with the MOTM440 filter and you have instant PPG Waveterm 2.3 sounds!

But there is more, it also includes some very rare modules including the Oakley Octal Resonator (Only 20 ever built!), the very highly regarded ENCORE thru zero Bode style frequency shifter and the extremely wacky Neural Agoniser, which uses two huge (and very expensive) Accutronics spring line reverb tanks to make sounds you have never heard before! The Blacet MiniWaves both have the Hylander Rom expansion boards, so each MiniWave has TEN selectable Roms instead of one or two, and there are 256 waves and 256 banks in each rom - that is a LOT of waveforms. One of the ROMs even allows the MiniWaves to act as a fully featured Quantizers!.

Here is a list of all modules:

TOP ROW
OAKLEY MidiDac Midi to CV Convertor
1 of Custom Built Noise source - produces White Noise, Pink Noise and two of three oscillator 808 type “Chime” Noise sources – great for bell tones
2 of OAKLEY VCO Modded with Switchable Octaves and Fine tune (like minimoog)
1 of Oakley VCO with standard Coarse and Fine Tune controls
2 of BLACET Mini Waves – Modded with Rom expansions, each miniwave has TEN selectable roms, instead of usual 1 or 2. Includes PPG Roms and many others.
2 of Oakley ADSR / VCA’s latest issue with extra fast envelopes and status leds
1 of MOTM 440 Voltage Controlled Filter
1 of OAKLEY SuperLadder Moog filter 1P, 4P and bandpass
1 of OAKLEY Octal Resonator resonant filter bank

BOTTOM ROW
1 of OAKLEY VC-LFO
1 of OAKLEY Sample & Hold and Slew Module
1 of OAKLEY Wavefolder
1 of ENCORE Electronics Thru Zero Frequency Shifter
1 of OAKLEY Little EG – AD and AR envelope shaper
1 of OAKLEY Triple VCA
2 of OAKLEY MultiMix – With full “Stooge” mod front panels, allow addition or subtraction of voltages
1 of MOTM 485 – Yamaha GX1 LP and HP Voltage Controlled Filter
1 of MOTM 410 – Korg PS3200 style Triple Bandpass Voltage Controlled Filters
1 of OAKLEY OMS410 Expander for MOTM410, allows external use of 3 LFO’s, extra CV’s etc
1 of MOTM 420 – Korg MS20 style LP/HP/BP Voltage Controlled Filter
1 of MOTM 480 – Yamaha CS80 type LP/HP Voltage Controlled Filter
1 of TELLUN TLN-156 Neural Agoniser – With Dual Accutronics spring reverb tanks and full front panel design.

I will include a useful selection of patch cables. Also included is a huge ring binder with operation notes, building instructions, parts schedules and circuit diagrams for all of the modules. The whole system has been recently calibrated and fully tested and is 100% working. It has had very little use and should provide years of faithful service.

This is advertised elsewhere (SOS) so I reserve the right to end the auction early. This is a once in a lifetime opportunity, not just the best sounding Modular synth available but the best looking one too! You could easily pay more for a piano and that just has one sound and doesn't look as nice either :-)

Blacet Research Audio Synth Modules

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.

via this auction

"Blacet Research Audio Synth Modules, set of 6, FRAC Rack compatible, with 15v power supply. Everything powers up and is working just fine, but see detailed description below. FRAC rack modules are sized the same as Eurorack and API 500 series, but have 15v power requirement. The sale here includes a complete analog synth set, with the power supply. One of the six modules though (the chaos noise module) does not have a power supply base connector, so some electrical wiring is needed to power that one. The included power supply here has leads that plug directly into each of the other five modules, so those five are ready to "plug and play." Your on your own though as far as figuring out how to power up the Dark Star Chaos module.

Manuals for operating each of the six modules are included.

I believe you can mount these modules in a number of different types of racks. I used a 3-unit 19" wide audio rack, plus I had rails with mounts for the modules and rack ears to attach to that standard 19" audio rack. No mounting material is included with this sale, but it's easy enough to get that stuff. Check at Blacet.com if you have doubts.

From Blacet.com, you can get more info. Here is a general comment from their FAQ:

"ARE USED BLACET MODULES A GOOD BUY?" WE DON'T PRODUCE HUNDREDS OF ANY ONE MODULE, SO THE USED DEPARTMENT IS PRETTY SLIM. DON'T EXPECT MANY BARGAINS... THE EURO MODULES TEND TO USE +/-12V POWER; THE AMERICAN, +/-15V. OUR +/-15V AND POWER CONNECTOR SYSTEM IS FULLY COMPATIBLE WITH SYNTHESIS TECHNOLOGY (MOTM). THE NEW PAIA MODULES CAN BE RUN OFF OUR +/-15V SUPPLY BY USING A PAIA TO BLACET CABLE AND REMOVING OR JUMPERING THE PAIA MODULE POWER INPUT RESISTORS. SEE THE PAIA SITE FOR MORE INFO. OTHER MAKERS SUCH AS WIARD AND METALBOX ALSO USE OUR CONNECTOR."

BLACET DIGITAL PATTERN GENERATOR

via this auction
"unique, one of a kind Blacet Digital Pattern Generator for a modular synthesizer system. A real piece of synthesizer history.

It was planned for production, but never made it: instead, John Blacet wrote an article about how to make the module as a kit in the then popular magazine Synapse. See
dpg1.jpg
dpg2.jpg

The DPG is basically the predecessor of the Blacet Binary zone BZ2300 Complex Control Voltage Generator. See http://www.blacet.com/BZ.html

This particular module was built as a prototype by John Blacet himself in the 1970’s, and served as the original for the article in Synapse. I know John built it, as I bought it directly from him years ago. This is not a production model, it's a hand made module on stripboard with a hand made front panel. Some functions are etched in the metal (see pics). This would be a truly unique addition to any modular system. It interfaces with mini jacks, though conversion to something like banana plugs wouldn't be difficult as they will fit on the same holes."

Blacet Design Contest

Via Blacet.

"We have an extreme excess of Multi panels (do to a series of unfortunate events!).

Rather than toss them, perhaps someone out there can figure out a module that would use *only* the existing holes (we can strip and rescreen the printing).

There are 5 jack holes and one pot hole. You can look at the panel here:
http://www.blacet.com/multi.html

You don't have to draw up any schematics; just figure out the general purpose and label the panel.

I don't know what the prize will be yet but it will be something good, depending on the "brilliance" of the concept.

I reserve the right to forget the whole thing if no one comes forth with anything useable!

Send entries to blacet@blacet.com with "Blacet Contest" in the subject line. You can send a .jpg and/or a written description.

Contest ends upon my whim."

Gregg Janman's Modular Noodlings

Gregg recently posted this MP3 on the Analog Heaven mailing list, as an example of the Metalbox 8008, a Roland TR-808 kick drum clone. The MP3 also includes a Blacet and Wiard modular. I asked him if it would be ok to post the sample as I thought it was really good, it's very clean so you can hear each instrument clearly. He gave me the go ahead and a whole lot more. Below are some notes by Gregg and a few more samples and descriptions of each. Very, very cool. Thanks Gregg!

"i post a lot of info about my modular to the black dog forum here.

i have a 37 module (and still growing but nearly complete i feel) frac
rack system with a mobius and fat controller sequencer, and a
moogerfooger mf-101 lpf. apparently it's the only frac rack modular in
japan ;)

that dimension c track is two modular voices (one blacet pwm wave into
moog filter, one blacet/wiard miniwave into blacet stonz phaser into
wiard boogie filter, both sequenced by the same cv from the mobius) plus
effects (2 blacet time machines plus a boss dimension c pedal) tweaked
and recorded live in one take and then post processed digitally with a
little reverb, compression, limiting and eq. the weirdest thing is that
if you listen to it for a while, it REALLY sounds like a grand piano!!!

here are some other modular noodlings:

  1. http://darkflame.hermetech.net/Musick/Babaluma-ChineseLantern.mp3

an example of putting the feedback signal of a delay through a phaser.
the main patch is the wiard noise ring output quantised by the miniwave
to a pentatonic scale set to "play" the vco's randomly, through the
    above mentioned effects.

  2. http://darkflame.hermetech.net/Musick/OneDropDrums&Acid.mp3

slow and dubby acid with the heavily modded tr-606.

  3. http://darkflame.hermetech.net/Musick/Babaluma-VeryPhat.mp3

    an excercise in phatness.

  4. http://techno.dogsquad.co.uk/darkflame/DoubleDelaySweep.mp3

how BIG can those blacet time machines sound?

  5. http://techno.dogsquad.co.uk/darkflame/3SquDroneEndorphin.mp3

a long drone, nice but boring? would make a good "bed" for other stuff.

  6. http://techno.dogsquad.co.uk/darkflame/Babaluma-TheKindThatWinds.mp3

techno track, lots of modular, 606 and 8008.

  7. http://darkflame.hermetech.net/Musick/Babaluma&Decadnids&Elf-Maggie-YamatoFluteMix.mp3

splitting a stereo mix digitally into m/s components, then processing
the m and s signals through DIFFERENT modular patches, back into the
digital realm where the m and s signals are recombined into stereo...
    mmmmm....

  8. http://darkflame.hermetech.net/Musick/Babaluma-HymnForJohn.mp3

a complete track featured on the http://www.darkwinter.com/ album "full
cold moon", a tribute to john balance of coil, and featuring tangerine
    dream/coil style modular sequencing.

  9. http://darkflame.hermetech.net/Musick/Babaluma-TsunamiTidalWaves(PowerAmbientRemix).mp3

  10. a full track, and one that i'm very happy with, even though it's old and
was made almost entirely in the digital domain (audiomulch on the pc). i
hope to be able to make stuff like this with just analogue gear in the
    future.

anyway, feel free to post any of this stuff on your site. i'm always
looking to collaborate or master other people's stuff when my schedule
allows.

best wishes and thanks for listening and commenting, i really appreciate it!

gregg janman."

Thank you Gregg!

Frac 'n Drawdio: Graphite Dronespace 1

YouTube via OculoRapido
"Test drive of a modified adafruit Drawdio with a Blacet/Metalbox/Wiard/Cynthia Frac format modular synthesizer system. Drawdio equipped with a 1/8" mini phone jack output and connected to an insulated 5.6 mm clutch lead holder (mechanical pencil) and a graphite starting patch on a Circa sketch book paper sheet. Drawdio output patched to Blacet 2225 I/O, to Klang Werk to Time Machine to Wiard Borg Filter, with I/O gate to Blacet EG1 ADSR. Drawdio patch mixed with Dronespace voices via Blacet 2200 VCA Quad Mix (see Dronespace videos info). Thanks to Ladyada Limor Fried and her crew at adafruit industries, and (as always) to John Blacet, Michael Ford, Grant Richter, and Cynthia Webster for their fine modular designs. Blacet 2100 VCO +or 1 Octave Shift mostly monotone

Published on Feb 14, 2013 Nicholas Keller

"I decided to run the 1V/Oct MAQ16/3 sequence to an A-156 Dual Quantizer to a manual switch before routing it to the Blacet 2100 VCO input. This way the pattern could focus on the root note and the Octave Shift. I switch back and forth between straight one-note sequence and the Octave Shift so you can hear the difference. Transposing of the one-note rhythm begins at about 4m08s. The Octave Shift is modified by a Ramp LFO with reset."

Blacet 2100 VCO +or 1 Octave Shift w Joystick control

Published on Feb 14, 2013

"Have a listen to 'Take My BreathAway' (Mylo Remix) by The Knife. At around the 2 minute mark, it almost sounds like Mylo is changing the Octave setting of whatever synth is being used while the sequence is running. I imagined I could do this using the Blacet VCO's +/-1 Octave input and a bi-polar joystick like a Doepfer A-174.

My version uses samples from the original, but I reprogrammed the synth line to play from my modular using the Blacet 2100 VCO, an A-115 Audio Divider, and with +/-1 Octave control from a joystick."
