Point Blank on Emulating The Classic Roland TB303

The following tutorial covers emulating the Roland TB-303 with Logic's ES1, however the techniques can be applied to other synths. Posted in full here with permission from Point Blank. The embeds below are only linked in the Point Blank post. I opted to embed them. Be sure to check out their site for more pro audio tutorials.

"Hands up who likes analogue synthesisers?! Of course you do; there’s dozen of models out there and the best thing is, they’re all different. That might seem strange at first glance because when you examine them, most models appear to be basically the same.

My Roland SH101 has one oscillator, one filter, one envelope generator and plays only one note at a time. Put that next to my Yamaha CS10, which is nearly exactly the same in terms of sound making facilities, and everyone except a guitarist would tell you they’re different, as different as a grand piano and a Yamaha DX7 (and the SH101 sounds far better in my opinion). And as every synth sounds different, each is unique. Which brings us to a tiny silver box manufactured in 1982. It’s the antique synth that inspired every dance music genre since Acid House:

The Roland TB303 Bassline.

Hardfloor - Acperience 1

YouTube Uploaded by drstrobo on Nov 27, 2006

On paper it looks extremely limited. It has one oscillator, one envelope generator, one filter and a tiny keyboard that’s next to impossible to program. And yet, this synth sounds like no other. It’s weedy, shrill and despite it’s ‘bassline’ tag the thing it does worst is basslines. How ironic! TB303 are very rare and very expensive these days, and quite frankly you’d be better off spending £1200 on a decent set of monitors. To save you some money I’m going to show you how you can make Logic’s ES1 software instrument do a close imitation. And if you don’t have Logic, don’t worry, because these steps will work on just about any softsynth.

The basics

1. Load in the ES1 and set the oscillator to ‘sawtooth’. Set the oscillator mix so you have only the main oscillator, not the the subsoscillator. The TB303 has no suboscillator and only a dial between sawtooth and ‘square’; you can switch the oscillator to square if you prefer.
2. Set the oscillator range to 16’.
3. Make sure the ES1 ‘Voices’ setting is in ‘Legato mode’ and with ‘Glide’ set to around a 1/3 of the way up.

This setting is extremely important; we must not have notes overlapping and creating chords. We need the ability to slide between specific notes too!

4. Set the ADSR to very fast attack (but not instant, just slightly off will suffice). Set sustain to zero. Set the release and decay to two thirds of the way up.
5. Set the amp to ‘Gate R’ and the ‘level via vel’ triangles to one at the top and the other 2/3 up.
6. Set the filter to 12dB (the TB303 actually has an 18dB filter but the ES1’s filter sounds far more realistic at this setting) and the ADSR via vel triangles at zero and 2o’clock. Drive should be at zero, and ‘Key’ at half way.
7. Set ‘Analog’ to 100%
8. Set both modulation faders to zero. There’s no modulation other than ADSR on a TB303!

So, with your synthesiser set up in this way, you should have an approximation of a TB303 coming out of your speakers. That’s only half of the battle: to really get that acid feel you need to play the ES1 like a TB303 too. Which actually means that you mustn’t play it but manually program in a pattern in the style of a Roland sequencer from the early 1980s.

The Pattern

1. Create a one bar region in the arrange area using the pencil mouse tool (esc > No.2)
2. Open that in the piano roll editor and draw in the notes you want to play using the pencil tool. Note that the default length on velocity setting is ideal for us because the note is one 16th note long and the velocity is 80. Remember, no chords!

Here’s where things get really clever. At the moment, you’ll probably have a string of notes, each clearly firing one after the other. The TB303 can do that, but the best patterns use glides, legato and accents to create that classic Acid House feel.

1. Drag the right hand corner of the note that you want to ‘slur’ into the next one to the right so that it overlaps with the next note. This will do two things: it will stop the envelope generator triggering again and it will make the ES1 sweep to the new note’s pitch. Nice!
2. The finishing touch is to add accents. You do this with the velocity mouse tool (esc > No.9). At the moment, all your notes will be at velocity 80. Click-drag up on the note you want to have an accent until the velocity is at, say, 100. That note will not only be louder but it will also be slightly brighter too, just like in the old days.

The finishing touches

Of course, it’s how you adjust the settings on the synth that makes that TB303 ‘performance’. The best ones to play with are the Decay/Release settings on the ADSR, Filter Cutoff, the Filter Resonance and the degree of Filter Modulation (move the fader by clicking between the two triangles). If you want to emulate the changing of the ‘accent’ setting, try moving the top filter triangle up and down. Also, you can adjust the attack setting on the ADSR; moving it up to just under a quarter of the way will give you an accurate ‘filter lag’ sound. The key here is subtlety. The real TB303 connoisseur can also add a touch more resonance on every accented note; this is most easily drawn in with automation.

Clean TB303 sounds went out of fashion in the 80s.

Phuture - Acid Tracks (1987)

YouTube Uploaded by CraazyAcid on Sep 26, 2009

Try these effects to dirty up your fake TB303:

1. Bitcrusher. But don’t use it to down-sample the audio. Instead, just adjust the drive setting. This will give you that classic ‘abused preamp on a cheap mixing desk’ grit.
2. Ensemble. This can help a pattern come alive, and adds a nice movement to the sound.
3. Tape delay. Throwing a dash of this into your mix can give the ES1 pattern an extra bounce and sound great with those shrill filter sweeps.

Enjoy!

Syntecno TeeBee

images via this auction

"Soundwise, this is the best 303 clone out there, plus it has MIDI, a ring mod oscillator, audio input, and 4 CV / gate outputs, and a MIDI merger. It is the swiss army knife of acid.

"The TeeBee is (according to most magazines and customers) the clone which has imitated the sound of the original Roland Tb303 the best. This means :
- The filter (18 dB, 2-pole) & oscillator has been made with the same components as the original TB303.
- The slide (portamento) has been fully integrated and can be controlled with a midi controller, or by using overlapping notes (AutoGlide).
- The accent function of the original has been integrated and can be controlled by sending attack velocities larger then 100.
- The TeeBee is attack velocity sensitive.

All the potentiometers of the TeeBee are able to sent and receive midi controllers.
So, you can record all the movements of the potentiometers while you are in the studio.
Afterwards, you can use these controller-trax at for example a life performance.
The TeeBee will respond to these controllers without any zipper noise or hearable clicks.

All the potentiometers can respond to any controller you assigned them to. This way you can use the TeeBee as an universal midi controller. For example, when you are using an effect processor, it's often possible to assign for example the reverb level to a controller. If you assign the same controller to a potentiometer on the TeeBee, you can now control the reverb level with any potentiometer on the TeeBee. This can be done for all 5 midi controllable potentiometers on the TeeBee.

There are 3 waveforms in the VCO of the TeeBee. (Saw, Square, Ring) The Ring waveform was not included in the original. The ring oscillator of the TeeBee is the same oscillator which is used as in the Korg MS20. The sounds produced with this oscillator are well suited for goa-trance and jungle music. More harmonics and a broader sound describes the Ring modulator.

When you want to filter your samples from your sampler (or other sound sources), you can use the analog input of the TeeBee for this. Just plug the output of your sampler into the analog input of the TeeBee. Now you can filter your samples in real-time, using the potentiometers or midi controllers with an original TB303 filter (the TeeBee). The Cutoff, Resonance, Envelop modulator and Decay potentiometers can now be used to change the characteristic of the filter. Also it is possible to 'overlay' the VCO of the TeeBee at the same time. The analog input of The analog input of the TeeBee is mixable, thus enabling you to mix the VCO of the TeeBee with an external sound source and run them both through the filter of the TeeBee. This results in ultra fat sounds.

If you have older equipment which can only be controlled by CV/Gate, then you can use the TeeBee for making these devices midi controllable. The TeeBee can control almost all synthesizers of Roland, Korg, Moog and other brands. Also you can use any free CV output on the TeeBee for controlling a control voltage input on an analog synth with the potentiometers or with midi controllers. For example, the Korg MS20 has a filter control input. With the TeeBee it's possible to control the analog input with a midi controller. Now you can not only make your MS20 midi controllable, you can also make most of it's parameters (knobs) midi controllable. The CV/Gates respond fast and with good accuracy. Pitch bend information is transmitted very fast through the CV/Gate outputs in both V/Hz mode and V/Oct mode.

The midi merger which is included in TeeBee Mark III, will save you many swapping of midi cables. When you do not have several midi inputs on your computer, you would have to change midi cables all the time. This is caused by the fact that you want to be able to record from your keyboard and at the same time be able to record controllers and sysex dumps from the TeeBee. With the TeeBee Mark III, the 2 midi merge inputs will solve this problem for you. You can connect up to 2 keyboards and record midi information from them and from the TeeBee at the same time.
The midi merger in the TeeBee can also be used as a stand-alone 2-channel midi merger or for being able to control all your midi equipment at the same time from 2 (yes two) computers. Now you can control all your equipment from your ST running cubase and at the same time from your pentium running cakewalk or cubase.

The sync output of the TeeBee will sync your SH101, MC202 or TR808
Changes made to any of the setting of the TeeBee are stored in memory.
All these specs sound very cool, but it's the sound which matters most. And that's what makes the TeeBee the best from all available clones.

TB303 & TT303 Bass Bot Video Comparisons

Published on Dec 1, 2012 by Bonnline

"TB & TT comparison. OK what can I say? Well the TT is value for money v the price of a TB. If you own a TB you will notice the slight differences but man that TT is impressive. The bass end blows the TB away but the TB still has those strange idiosyncrasies that that TT just can't quite replicate albeit it does come very close - only a TB owner will notice this. The TT certainly sends the x0xb0x to third place! Build quality is just like a new original, the tunning-accent pots are higher thus easier to turn but may feel a little wobbly for it!! I think TB owners will be shocked at how good it is = I was!. The tunes you hear are both identical but my TB double fires (sticky button syndrome!)... aha! but this is part of the TBs power - you get a different tune to what you had originally planned. The TB303 is the master but he has shown the TT the way ;-)"

Groove Electronics M303

Title link takes you to a couple more shots pulled from this auction.

Details:
"The M303+ is a Roland TB303 (without the sequencer) modified by groove electronics to have midi control, also added sync 24 to start a tb303 with a clock from your pc or mac,,, and ,,,an added midi to cv convertor for another analogue synth without midi,,

Very handy kit to bridge the gap between midi and cv gate technology.

we used this on nearly all our old shades of rhythm material , we used the sync 24 to sync an original roland tb303 with our pc using cubase , we used the modified built in roland tb303(without sequencer) using normal midi and we used the additional midi to cv gate to turn our sh101 into a midi synth.. a true work horse ;)

The M303 + is a dual channel MIDI to CV converter with an analogue voice module fixed to the Channel A CV controls.
The M303 voice is very similar to that found on the TB303 Bassline, and incorporates all the same front panel controls as found on that machine. These controls are self explanatory, and a few minutes spent with the machine will inform you of the range of sounds available.
Differences include the ability to control the voice from MIDI with pitchbend on any assignable receive channel, and control of the cut-off frequency from velocity information.
The manual supplied is that of the M2CV as this explains all the programmable parameters that are available on this machine.
Please Note,
Any parameter described in the M2CV manual will be available for control af the 303. ie Mod wheel or aftertouch could replace velocity as the controlling information routed to the filter. Transpose can be used to alter range of 303. Remember however that at power up, the unit defaults to the same set of parameters.
The unit is fitted with SYHC 24 output, arp triggering and of course a free set of CV, LEVEL and GATE outputs to independantly control another monosynth."

I have owned this from new, it cost me £199 but I've hardly used it (the studio work I have done over the last several years simply hasn't allowed me to really use this). Open Music Labs x0x-heart Eurorack Module Seeks Funding on Crowd Supply

The Open Music Labs x0x-heart has been available as a desktop DIY project for quite some time. Open Labs is now seeking funding on Crowd Supply in order to produce a eurorack version.

"The heart of a TB303 synth recreated in modular format.

The Roland TB303 voice practically defined Acid music, heavily influencing the development of electronic music. Add that voice to your own setup with the x0x-heart Eurorack Module.

The x0x-heart module is the analogue section extracted from the x0xb0x (a TB303 clone) and made small enough to fit the Eurorack format. More nimble as a module, you no longer need to work within the constraints of the original TB303’s sequencer.

Features
CV control of frequency, gate, accent, slide, env-mod, decay, and cut-off
Switches for waveform selection (square and sawtooth), external/internal oscillator mix
VCA and VCF outputs

Specifications

Eurorack standard format (3U height)
18hp
~1.75in depth (45mm)
+/-12V current draw 10mA
5V current draw: 50mA

Includes

10” Euro power cable (16 pin to 10 pin connector)
Black anodized aluminum knobs with a diamond knurl pattern and two set screws (with slot heads and flat points)
A .063” (1.6mm) highly durable satin aluminum Metalphoto panel with a black print
Stretch goals
If, during the campaign, the funding amount reaches $15,000, the pacemaker circuit board (the one with the knobs) will be re-designed to allow for easier tuning and manufacturing.

If and when the first stretch goal is met, more goals may be announced during the campaign - let us know what you’d like to see as a stretch goal! No promises, of course. Here are some things we’ve been considering to make available - either for additional purchase or as options:

Red-anodized aluminum knobs
Laser-cut and engraved wood faceplates (which would be more fragile, of course!)
Open source hardware
To help you truly understand and control what you and your module are doing, Open Music Labs makes all schematic and board layout files available for your perusal and use."

ABL2 TB303

YouTube Uploaded by Bonnline on May 13, 2011

"This is Audiorealism's software version of the TB303 it's called ABL2 or AudioBassline 2. As you will see from my other vids I own an original 303 so I'm in a good position to compare the two.

The ABL2 is a mere 10th of the price of a TB, so I won't be to hard on it!

I'm running it on a Mac, through GarageBand with GBs compressor, overdrive and distortion.

.........................

1 week after ownership of the ABL2: I had to produce this vid to let you hear just how good this little piece of software is. I programmed similar tunes as in my (TB303 Famous) tunes vid so you can play them both and compare them. Please bear in mind that I just pointed my camera at the screen and used the cameras tiny microphone to record the sound. It sounds even better in real life! (bear in mind the ABL2 cost £100 not £1000!).

My 'thang' for the original TB is the sweet spot - that bird-like chirp at the peak of the resonance cutoff.

THE ABL2 CAN HIT THAT SPOT - HARD AND SWEET :)

To be honest i was dumb-founded by what I was able to achieve. It's well capable of the most complex of rhythms.

The not so good: It really does need an updated manual as currently (May 2011) it's a version for ABL 1.5. The manual comes with an addendum but I feel the whole thing needs re-written at base level. The on, off , tie, rest and slide etc aren't explained fully. This can cause the programming to suffer.

Addendum (ha ha): To be fair I haven't figured the programming out yet (1 week!), as you will hear as some of the tunes aren't just right! (am I being to hard on a £100 piece of kit - YES ;). After all! Audiorealism are Swedish = Tack Mike Janney och team du har producerat en vass bit av ljudprogram.

One thing though: I wish they would make a hardware unit running the software. WHY? Well I work with computers all day (as most people do these days) and to come home and stare at another computer screen for hours on end, well it just burns the retinas waayyy toooo much.

update: Just downloaded TB303 skin for the ABL and it looks the 'dogs' ;)"

"MAM MB33 Retro with Acid FM mods: This video shows the filter FM mod modulating the filter cutoff at audio frequencies using the internal square and sawtooth VCO waveforms as FM sources. It also demonstrates the Filter Lock mod that holds the filter and VCA open with no envelope, the resonance boost, and the overdrive mod.

The MB33 retro seems to be designed to slightly distort the output stage at full volume, much like the TB303 did. The Drive mod boosts this distortion savagely for some grungy acid techno sounds."

"So I want to invite you all to the monthly tb303 pattern group
http://soundcloud.com/groups/the-acid-question

Each month one of the groups members will post a tb303 pattern as audio and also as pattern data

This pattern will then form the basis for other members to create a track

The pattern can then be programmed into your tb303 or x0x box to create a new track.
The pattern could be programmed into your vst such as ABL or Phoscoyn to create a new track.
Transcribe the pattern to midi and send it to your favourite synth to create a new track.
Grab the audio file and rework the audio into a new track

You can grab this empty pattern sheet from here

Bring the Acid
cheers

First test of my TR909 clone accompanied by a TB303. This is a technical demonstration.
No FX, no compressor. Only the 303 has a distortion"

Roland TR8 TB3 TR727 TB303 - TECHNO by Honeysmack

Published on Feb 17, 2014 Honeysmack·13 videos

"All Roland affair-- young and old. Just mucking about, smashing out some techno. No major statement. Didn't realize the camera was rolling.

The TB3 is the distorted acid line. TB303 has some effects from the desk otherwise all the other effects emanate from the TR8 and TB3. TR727 is routed into the TR8 external in. VT3 is pictured but not in use here.
