Video Descriptions:

1. Depeche Mode Enjoy the Silence synth cover Clavia Nord Modular G1 Atari ST Steinberg Cubase

All drum and synth sounds produced simultaneously by the Nord Modular without any multi-tracking.

This is my attempt at creating a ‘one synth’ cover of Enjoy the Silence, using only 4 sound patches on my Clavia Nord Modular G1 (with DSP Expansion), sequenced using Steinberg Cubase 3.1 on my old Atari ST.

Just for fun, I thought it might be interesting to use Logic Pro, synchronised to Cubase on the Atari using MIDI Time Code, to playback the original DM vocals (on track 1) in sync with the audio coming from the Nord Modular. Tracks 2 and 3 are recording the audio coming from the Nord Modular, along with reverb from my Soundcraft mixer recording on track 4.

Playlist:-
0.06 Nord Modular + original DM vocals
4.28 Individual sounds and sequences
8.03 Nord Modular instrumental

Nord Modular Patches:-
Slot A = Drums (CPU = 89.3% Poly = 1)
Slot B = Bassline and Bells (CPU = 49.4% Poly = 3)
Slot C = Vox Chords, Phaser Strings and Vox Melody (CPU = 76% Poly = 7)
Slot D = Guitar, Filter Sweep Bass and Synth (CPU = 95.7% Poly = 4)

Nord Modular audio outputs:-
1+2 = Dry / No effects
3+4 = Hall reverb from my Soundcraft mixer

"Clavia Nord Modular G1 (Classic) Virtual Analog Modular Synthesizer.
Produced in 1998 in Sweden. This little synthesizer is probably one of the mightiest digital synthesizers around. Listen to my demo (multitrack live improvisation).

The sounds in this demo are either self-made or modified original patches.
The composition is only a live improvisation by me."

Nord Modular Editor Site Gets a Huge Update

via Peter van der Noord, the man behind the new online Nord Modular Editor [see additional posts with demos here].

"We've launched a major update to the Nord Modular Editor, a browser-based editor for the Clavia Nord Modular G1.

Until now, this was just an editor but with this release we have added a full community and social layer on top:

Browse thousands of patches: Explore what other G1 users have created, both now and in the past. Instantly send any patch to your connected synth.

Upload and share your own: Build a library of your patches, organize them into collections, write descriptions.

Comment and engage: Like patches, leave feedback, see what other people are experimenting with.

Live sync with hardware: Edit in the browser while your synth is plugged in over MIDI; changes hit immediately.

G2 support is coming: Also interesting to note that support for the newer G2 versions of the Nord Modular is in the pipeline"

Web Based Online Editor for the Original Nord Modular

video upload by Peter van der Noord

"A short update on the browser based Nord Modular Editor that I am currently working on as a fun hobby project."

Additional details via https://nordmodulareditor.com where you can try it out yourself if you own an original Nord Modular:

"Nord Modular G1 Editor

Create, edit and (soon) share your Nord Modular patches with the community.

Some quick remarks:

This is still a very early version. A lot of things don't work or don't work correctly yet.
You should be able to edit patches, browse slots, add modules and cables, adjust parameters and load patches into a slot.
You probably want to run this in the Chrome browser, i haven't tested others.
I have only tested this with a Nord Modular Keys for now, I assume the Rack version will work the same but I don't know about the Micro. I assumed it would work the same but it appears that some people have issues getting it to connect.
Parameter values are often shown as their raw 0–127 values.
None of the displays work yet.
When something is wrong, updates don't come through, or communication seems to be stuck: refresh the page.
When using a trackpad, you probably want to use "scroll to pan" navigation. You can select this in the settings.
To add a module, drag it from the toolbar on top.
To delete a module or cable, select it and hit delete.
The tab key in the editor will toggle rendering cables behind or in front of the modules.
If you were following my personal YouTube channel for updates, please follow my other channel instead.
Feedback is much appreciated, but I don't have a proper way to do that yet.
This is a personal hobby project. I am not affiliated with or connected to Nord in any way.
Peter van der Noord"

"Patching a modular synthesizer can stimulate your musical creativity. On the other hand, retracing specific patch points through dozens of cables can boggle the mind, and reproducing a patch after you've moved lots of cables is nearly impossible.

In 1997, Clavia introduced the Nord Modular to uniquely address these issues. It combines hardware with a software editor to digitally transform the modular synthesizer experience. The Nord Modular Keyboard's hardware portion consists of a 25-note velocity-sensing keyboard with 18 user-assignable knobs and four independent voice channels for multi-timbral sound, and it sounds incredible!

The Nord Modular's editor software allows you to configure your own synthesizers on a Macintosh or Windows computer - complete with a bevy of module types and virtual cables for conducting audio, control, logic, and slave signals among modules - and download them via MIDI (not USB) to the hardware unit. As long as you don't need to add new modules or reconfigure cable routings, the synth doesn't require an attached computer and can function as a stand-alone electronic instrument. Among the available modules are multiple types of oscillators, envelope generators, filters, EQs, LFOs, step sequencers, waveshapers, audio and logic processors, control modifiers, and mixers. You can design complex patches without hitting the DSP ceiling, the supply of patch cords is essentially endless, and available synthesis types include subtractive, additive, FM, AM, and ring modulation.

List prices in 1998: $2,795 for the Nord Modular Keyboard and $799 for the optional voice-doubling expander board, which this unit has (attached power cord for U.S. AC). It's also running the latest V3.03 OS.

Included in the deal are both a cushy softshell carrying bag and a footswitch. All have belonged to me since 2003 and have never been subjected to cigarette smoke. There are no dings or scratches in the Nord Modular's case and the synth is in perfect working condition. Also included is the original manual and CD-ROM with Macintosh and Windows editors, but you can find updated editor software for both platforms online."

Nord Modular G1 FM Synth with M4L Plugin in Controller by Cooptrol HG

via Cooptrol HG on The MATRIXSYNTH Lounge:

"For Nord Modular G1 users, I have made an FM synth patch and this M4L plugin to control it. It is a 4 operator FM synth with 8 algorithms, ADSR envelopes, and a resonant filter with AR envelope and overdrive. All knobs on the Modular are mapped to most relevant parameters. You can download this zip with the Nord file, the M4L file and a jpg with the knob mapping. http://www.cooptrol.com/CoopsynthFM.zip"

This reminds me, one of these days I want to design Nord Modular synths with dedicated iPad editors using TB MIDI Stuff or the like.

Bus Powered Access Virus TI + Nord Modular g1 25 Synth

via this auction

""Everybody serious in the electronic music scene knows that the Virus and Nord sound cannot be achieved through software plugins alone"
--
Up for sale is my completed synth project.

Technical Notes:

In a nutshell, the combo is comprised of the following 3 main parts :

1 Novation 25 key SL mkII
1 Clavia Nord Micro Modular
1 Access Virus TI Snow

All parts have been soldered and mounted together inside the novation shell:

the micro modular and the TI snow receive power from the fw800 bus.

(you no longer have to plug them into the wall!)

unlesss you want to of course, all orignal power sockets are intact and accessable from the outside so you can still use wall wart power if you prefer.. the [audio out] of the micro modular is hardwired to the [audio in] of the TI snow. I also left the four micro modular 1/4" jacks accesable so you can plug input the mm voncoder or output the raw mm signal. the midi ports of the micro modular are hardwired to the midi ports of the novation. All original Virus TI Snow and Nord Modular jacks are accessible from the back of the synth (as seen in photo 6) also as you can see from the photo 1 , the main virus volume knob is routed to the upper right hand corner. I also swapped out blue for red on the novation scribble strip. so in total the synth requires 3 cords/ports to operate: 1 FW800 cable for power 1 USB port for novation SL/mkII and micro modular 1 USB port for the Virus TI Snow Also included are original cases and parts for the TI Snow and Nord Micro."

"Spaces in Places" Yamaha MU80 (Percussion) + Nord Lead 1

Published on Oct 21, 2013 Time Synth Project·46 videos

"Here's a simple 8 bar vamp with elaborate percussion I composed on Finale. Nord Lead begins playing at (0:40).
I created controller patches for the Nord and MU80 on the Nord Modular G1. There are no Nord Modular sounds in this, although it was used as the main controller. Whoever messes around with their portamento settings on their MU80? Easily when the midi CCs are mapped to a controller. Also switched in and out of 'modulated delay' preset on the Lexicon MX300. I didn't want the delay on during the complex drumfills."

Nord Modular vs. Octatrack generative madness

Published on Apr 18, 2018 0F.digital

Remember you can use the controls at the bottom of the player to jump around.

"DISCLAIMER: This video is intentionally more about long-form sound design and sample manipulation than lush melodic content.

I created a totally chaotic, generative Nord Modular G1 patch with a lot of cross-modulation and unorthodox synthesis/sequencing. It borders on noise, but there are some tonal elements as well. Basically some really good sampling material for the Octatrack.

I used several tracks on the OT to mangle various parts of the incoming audio, using both normal and one-shot trigs on a few track recorders. I've had the OT for over a year now and am still learning new things to do with it.. and still fumbling a bit, as you may notice!

Audio source is entirely synthesis from the Nord. Octatrack is sampling and providing effects. No external audio processing, apart from a light limiter.

No editing; this is a pretty self-indulgent video but it might be good to skip through and find some interesting parts. I'll probably edit this down and use it as the base for another track at some point.

Here's the Nord patch:

Tenori-On controlling Nord Modular G1

*NEW* my first try on Tenori-On controlling Nord Modular G1
Published on Jul 13, 2013 michal23pl·80 videos

I had all of them them (including Yamaha AW2816) roughly for a few days days so it's a huge triple learning curve. It is gonna take a while to make everything sound nice."
