Kawai SX240 8 Voice 2 DCO Synth w/ 1 Sub SSM Filters Split/Layer/Midi & Tauntek OS

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.

via this auction

"Straight to the point - it has just 1 functional issue (which for a gear perfectionist like myself makes me crazy). Absolutely everything works fantastic - it is in excellent condition and extremely well serviced. In all of the regular voice modes all 8 voices/2 OSC/Sub perform wonderfully - as designed. As do all buttons, knobs, display, outputs. But - when you switch to layered/split mode it drops a voice. 7 sound. All 8 sound in regular mode - 7 in layer/split. To be honest - it is quite usable regardless and in the mix it is not going to be noticeable. But if you are super-particular about perfect equipment and something like this would just bug you (like it does me) - it isn't the synth for you.

Apart from this the SX-240 is a great sounding instrument that bridges the pre-80's and 80's sound nicely. Though it has SSM filters and an ensemble effect it is not a PolySix, and it's definitely not a Juno - it truly sits in it's own pocket. Very musical. Not many 8 voice analog polys out there - to begin with - and fewer that can layer and split. Has the "ensemble" effect, HPF, Ring Mod, Patch storage. Etc Etc. And Tauntek OS increases midi control." Classic birds: Roland CR78 and Korg Mini Pops 7 MIDI flyover

video upload by ohm_studi_ohm

"Since these days I have on hand 2 classic - shall I write cult ? - drum machines that I retrofitted with MIDI interface it was very tempting to compare them in real time, playing the same thing. So I did !

The Korg MiniPops features the Tubbutec Unipulse interface (https://tubbutec.de/unipulse/) and the Roland CR-78 was upgraded with Tauntek MCU replacement (http://tauntek.com/CR78.htm). Bless these guys for everything they give to the synth community.
In this video I don't go deep into the MIDI functionality, i simply wanted to compare the raw sound of these 2 units. It would not be fair to compare them features wise. 10 years or more separate them and in many aspects the technology gap seems abysmal.
BUT they are more alike one can think at first.
What makes them very close is the nature, number and choice of drum sounds. The MP7 has 15 of them and the CR78 14. They have those sounds in common: Bass, Snare, Rimshot, High-Hat, Cymbal, Cowbell, Conga, Large Bongo, Small Bongo, Claves, Guiro, Tambourin.
The MP7 adds a second Snare sound (longer decay) whereas the CR78 has a second Tambourine sound (longer decay). The "maracas" on th CR78 can be interpreted as Cymbal 2 on the MP7.
Actually soundwise the big difference is the "Quijada" sound that's on the MP7 and is nowhere else to be found. Quite a jaw dropping sound it is !
So anyway i MIDI mapped the MP7s sounds to their respective CR78 ones as best possible so I now have 2 analog expanders rack :-)"

Mint Kawai SX240 with Tauntek Firmware Upgrade, XLR Input Mod & Original Box

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.

via this auction

"Mint condition Kawai SX240. Replaced original eprom with Tauntek upgraded firmware (will include original eprom firmware if you'd like to swap back). Previous owner made a small modification to the left side of the synth. There is an xlr input and toggle switche installed into the metal chassis, but he never wired it up to anything (pictured). Includes original SX240 retail box."

No pics of the original box, but you can find some here. It appears to be the same one based on the XLR input mod. Different pics though.

Programming Crumar BIT99 with MIDI Controller

video upload by ohm_studi_ohm

"This synth is for sale. You can buy it directly (sales.ohmstudiohm@gmx.fr) for 1450 euros or buy it on eBay (https://www.ebay.com/itm/305202255093) or Reverb https://reverb.com/item/74807341) [pics captured here]

This is demo mainly to show how easy it is to program this synth thanks to the amazing work Bob Grieb (Tauntek) did by rewritting the firmware and enabling Midi Control Changes messages on this synth.

The only drawback (due to the hardware) is you have to retrigger a note for every change you make on a parameter, except for a few ones that a real time (resonance, DCO and LFO waveshape for instance). Just a minor annoyance compare to the original programming method (which is actually not the worse of that kind).

The BIT99 and BIT01 are very nice sounding and quite comprehensive 6 voice analog synth. They feature 2 DCOs with triangle, sawtooth and pulse waveform, in octave from 32 to 4 and you can combine the 3 waveforms on each oscillator. Dedicate ADSR enveloppes for filter and amp with velocity control, 2 LFOs, noise generator, split or stack possibilities etc

IMO they only lack a mixer for the 2 oscillators, LFO PWM (though you can control the PW with velocity) and a hi pass filter.

But the sound is very nice, I favore it over the Oberheim Matrix 6 for instance. It sits very easily in the mix. Build quality and keyboard are also of upper level."

"Excellent condition with original box and manual. The rare cream edition. You may never see another one like this again.

Includes uninstalled Tauntek eprom, included for free at asking price (I can't confirm it works because I never installed it, but I have no reason to believe it won't--No returns if eprom does not work--that is why I am giving it away if the Matrix 1000 is purchased at asking price)."

Crumar Bit99 + Wersi Wersivoice

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.
video upload by ohm_studi_ohm

"Quick demo of the Crumar BIT99 i fully serviced. In the frst part i flip through a few patches to let you hear how this one can sound, mainly for bass/lead/keyboards sounds. And in the second part I focus on pads and i run the synth through a custom built Wersi Wersivoice analog triple chorus. As you can hear i can turn the BIT99 into a great string machine and more.
Record with no other FX or treatment.
Pardon my playing, I'm better at servicing these instruments than playing them :-)"

via this auction

"Here is your chance to grab a unique combo in the form of 6 voice analog polysynth and a custom made BBD triple chorus ensemble effect.

The Crumar BIT99 was fully serviced:
- power supply electrolytic capacitors replaced
- voice board electrolytic capacitors replaced
- firmware upgraded with Tauntek one: you can now easily control and program the synth with any midi controller
- keyboard dismantled and contacts and bus bar cleaned
- meticulously calibrated
- panel board and case fully dismantled, cleaned and polished
- custom made real wood side end cheeks

It sounds, plays and looks awesome. It does has some wear and scuffs but it is in great condition.
STAND IS NOT INCLUDED.

The Wersivoice was custom built and is a great addition to any synth, analog or digital. It simply can turn anything into a great string machine, and more.
Very simple, no control: sound in sound out. There is a 3 positions switch with ON / MUTE / (true) BYPASS positions.
It runs directly from 230v.
Since it's DIY it doesn't look perfect."

Akai AX-73 & VX-90 - 100 patches - Demo

video by Sonic Freaks

"You can find these presets here: https://sonicfreaks.com/shop/akai-vx-...

We are proud to present our 100 brand new presets for the Akai AX-73 & Akai VX-90. These vintage synthesizers from 1986 are true classic analog synthesizers with a very special character. Underestimated by many, but the true connoisseur knows what these beautiful sounding synths can do. Both synths have VCOs and analog 24dB lowpass filter. Unique is the PWM that can be used on any waveform of the VCO creating all kinds of sonic flavours.

Many late 80's synthesizers suffered from the lack of knobs and sliders to program sounds. This resulted in the end users often not being able to understand the synths properly. Designing usable sound patches was therefore a challenge. This also applies to the Akai AX-73 & Akai VX-90.

Sonic Freaks has therefore designed 100 very useful and modern sounding patches. These patches are fully compatible with the Tauntek firmware upgrade for the Akai AX-73 & Akai VX-90 and can, provided this upgrade has been performed, be loaded into the synth using a sysex dump.

Also included is a high resolution tape dump (44Khz - 24Bit) which you can be loaded into the Akai AX-73 or Akai VX-90 using a traditional tape dump. For more details, please read the installation instructions which you can download for free from our website!"

Oberheim Matrix 1000 OS update V1.20 ambient demo (plus Eventide Space)

Published on Mar 29, 2017 MIDERA

"Just messing around with the latest Matrix 1000 OS update version 1.20. This version is really great. You're able to modify parameters in real-time with minimal artifacts in the sound (I didn't really hear any). Plus, it lets you see what the current parameter value is (it moves up and down as you make adjustments). Seriously - it's worth buying from the developer on this one!

Modded Sequential Circuits Max Synth

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.

via this auction

"This Synth has been modified with the addition of the following features:

• 100 sounds, all downloadable, located in battery-backed RAM

• Note storage increased from about 500 to about 3200

• Unison mode added.

• Three sets of 100 factory sounds in EPROM: 80 Max + 20 Six track Unison factory sounds, 100 Six Track factory sounds, and 100 Multi-Trak factory sounds (without chorus or velocity sensitivity, of course)

• CC parameter changes to current program can be saved to program 99, then copied to any other program

• MIDI receive buffer increased from 64 bytes to 128 bytes

• Removed code that reduced volume of subsequent notes if CC change received while MIDI note with low velocity playing. This a code bug in the original EPROM.

These features were added by upgrading both the EPROM and the type/amount of RAM. The Max shipped with a 128K EPROM and two 2Kx8 SRAM chips. This modified Max has a 256K EPROM and a single 32Kx8 SRAM chip (only 16K is used). The modification is a small PC board which holds the EPROM and NV SRAM. This board plugs into the existing EPROM socket on the Max. Five additional wires connect from the Max main board to the new memory board. In addition, the two SRAM chips on the Max main board have been disabled. See more info by googling 'Sequential Circuits MAX Mod Page - Tauntek'"

Stereoping MidiTools

video upload by Three CCTranslators automating Microwave, Matrix and TX81Z from DAW Stereoping

"Technical productdemo for the #CCTranslator which converts common Midi Control Change (aka 'CC') data into highly specialized #SysEx parameter change commands. This allows to remote or automate vintage Synthesizers like e.g. the #Waldorf #Microwave, #Matrix1000, #TX-81Z in your DAW. In the video these three Synths are automated - each with 4 parameters - from a dashboard in FL Studio. The Matrix1000 is running the tauntek firmware which reflects parameter changes on the LED display. Some little timing issues but mostly it works quite well. Most of the automation data was optimized by drawing steps and preventing redundant data. Depending on your DAW, automation curves can produce a LOT of data which might result in timing problems or missed events."

via stereoping

"The MIDI TOOLS are tiny, cute boxes manipulating Midi Data. They will be plugged in between the sender (MIDI OUT of DAW or Keyboard) and the receiver (MIDI IN of Synthesizer) and will be supplied with power from the connected Midi cable – there is no power supply jack. This is quite practical and works with the vast majority of equipment.

The Midi Tools are coming in 3 flavours:

The PolyChainer will be plugged in between the Synth Programmer and allows playing two Matrix 1000/6/6R (or other Synths) with 12 note polyphony

The CCTranslator translates ordinary Control Change (“CC”) messages into the complex SysEx commands to control and remote your vintage Synthesizer

The ChordTransposeFilter offers 4 features at the same time: Chord Memory, transposition of incoming midi notes, filtering of undesired Midi data and a simple MIDI Thru

The MidiTools are housed in a beautiful stainless steel case, the upper half painted in transparent strawberry red, yum. Like all Stereoping products their firmware can easly be updated over Midi. Please click the tabs for more info about the little helpers."
