Ambient Explorations pt.37 (Instruō Cruïnn)

video upload by Piotr Garbaczonek

"Thanks for watching! #modular #eurorack #ambient
In this episode of 'Ambient Explorations', I am using the recently-released Instruo Cruinn, which is a wonderfully sounding stereo through-zero phase modulated oscillator. All the stereo elements that repeat over time, which are sawtooth waves, are coming from this module, in case you wanted to know what it sounds like. It is being supported by its fellow family members: Instruo Arbhar for stereo granular elements; Instruo Lubadh, which is receiving the summing output from Cruinn, and slowing down or speeding up randomly by being modulated by Instruo/Divkid øchd; Instruo CS-L, which is going through Mutable Instruments Clouds to create a nice yet weird background texture (it sounds like people playing violins in the higher register); and Instruo Lion which is taking care of most of the modulation routings within the system.

Moog Subharmonicon Granular Ambient Bells with Soma Cosmos and Linnstrument

video upload by riotbell

"This is a video featuring the Subharmonicon being controlled via midi by the Linnstrument. One of my favorite things about the Subharmonicon is the way oscillators can mix to provide some very rich bell and chime like timbres.

The Soma Cosmos is providing granulated repeats that slowly evolve into a droning pad over the course of the video.

Forgive my awkward reach, on the Linnstrument, I had trouble setting up an overhead camera and had to pace about to reach things.

Thanks for listening!"

u-he Kinesis - Preset Walkthrough (Soundset for Hive 2)

video upload by u-he

"Bryan Lake aka Sound Author presents a 128-patch set for Hive 2, focussed on timbral movement:
https://u-he.com/products/soundsets/h...

Kinesis comprises an arsenal of organic grooves, snappy generative arpeggios, evolving sequences and lush ambient pads, several of which employ Hive’s special filter modes.

Most of the presets react to MIDI velocity, modulation wheel and pitch bend.

All presets include XY pad control, which not only appears in Hive’s XY panel, but also in Hive’s preset browser (as a row of 8 knobs) as well as on NKS hardware.

Music by Seb (Hyboid) and Howard Scarr.

TASTY CHIPS GR-1 - Scratching the Surface

Part 1 (ambient) video upload by Megan Leber

"This is the first part of a little series I'll record with the Tasty Chips Electronics GR-1. I loooove granular synthesis and this machine is a beast! I'm just scratching the surface here, so I'll definitely record some more videos in the future where I'll be using more complex settings (and the modular of course!). Enjooooy!"

TASTY CHIPS GR-1 - Scratching the surface - Part 2 (techno)

"The long awaited part 2! Jamming with the Tasty Chips GR-1 (not MIDI synced) and playing with the LFO's. Later I recorded an improvised piece with my Roland TR-8S to give it some context. Enjoy!"

Dancer 🕺 (NDLR // Nymphes + Lofi + Bigsky // DB01 // TR6S // 0Coast + Timeline + Particle // SE02)

video upload by 2-Minute Warning

"Here is my latest track featuring the inspiring NDLR 4-track sequencer, trying to do something more uptempo this time (the NDLR really excels at doing ambient tracks, but can it be used for some more 'techno' tracks? 🤔 Hope we'll get an answer thanks to your comments 😉)

I used 4 analog tracks for this jam (Nymphes, DB01, 0Coast and SE02), sequenced by the Conductive Labs NDLR sequencer. The drums were sequenced and played by the Roland TR6S 'rhythm performer' (where I used mainly the Analog Circuit Behavior and FM engines). Recorded in one take.

* Hardware used *
- PADS: Dreadbox Nymphes + Zvex Instant LoFi Junky + Strymon Bigsky + Pill Pedal (triggered by the TR-6S)
- BASS: Erica Synths DB-01 Bassline
- MOTIF-1: Make Noise 0-Coast + Strymon Timeline (Delay) + Red Panda Particle 2 (Granular Delay)
- MOTIF-2: Roland SE-02
- DRUMS: Roland TR-6S
- Sequencer: Conductive Labs - NDLR (sequencing all 4 synths)"

Ambient jam with the Tasty Chips GR-1, Sequential Take 5, and Strymon NightSky

video upload by Jay Hosking

"Please support my work on Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/jayhosking
A live, semi-improvised track performed entirely on hardware.

There are few options for granular synthesis in the hardware world. The Tasty Chips GR-1 has the right level of control, via its knobs and faders, and visual feedback, via its generous screen, to make granular synthesis fast, fun, and hands-on. Plus it's got 11-voice polyphony, four different timbres to play all at once, a dedicated filter on each timbre, and some effects for in a pinch. Not only can you create granular synth sounds, but you can also play looped "clouds" of the sample, or just straight sample playback at different rates, pitches, and directions. In short, the GR-1 overcomes all my issues with using software granular on (for example) my iPad, and makes the process just as fun as using subtractive synthesis.

Speaking of subtractive synths, the Take 5 continues to be a gem. Considering it's an introductory synth in the Sequential line-up, it is an amazing sounding synth with an excellent design, a nice keybed, and useable effects. It's rare to find a polysynth with a strong low end, but the Take 5 really can fill out the spectrum. I love it.

This track is the result of my Patreon's holiday collaboration, in which we all sent samples to a recipient, and received samples from a "secret syntha", and made songs from these samples. It culminated in a listening party on New Year's Eve and was a ton of fun. Thanks so much to Som Shankhar (pad sample) and jean-louis proust (drum sample) for the inspiration and the loops here!

Tasty Chips GR-1 - Three granular loops (piano, pad, sparkle) and one playback loop (drums)
Strymon NightSky - Reverb for the GR-1
Sequential Take 5 - Main synth pad

Performed and recorded live, with EQ, compression, and limiting on the master."

Ambient jam with the Dreadbox Nymphes, Tasty Chips GR-1, Strymon NightSky, and Empress Reverb

video upload by Jay Hosking

"A live, semi-improvised track performed entirely on hardware.

Dreadbox was kind enough to send along the Nymphes a little early to me, and I couldn't have been more excited. While I have the Abyss, I've been hoping for a new Dreadbox polysynth that's more widely available for a long time.

And the Nymphes doesn't disappoint. It's unbelievably small but with a super sturdy build and great fader throw lengths. It has a lot of secondary functions but it's dead easy to navigate, and still feels more hands-on than the Dreadbox Typhon (another great small synth). And most importantly of all, it has a beautiful sound with tons of character and some great particular nooks and crannies in its timbres. A warm analog polysynth the size of a paperback book? I love it.

I've also got lots to say on the Tasty Chips GR-1, but I'm planning to do a video with it in the near future, so more then. Suffice it to say for now that I love it and that it's a perfect companion for ambient work.

Dreadbox Nymphes through Strymon NightSky — Main synth
Tasty Chips GR-1 through Empress Reverb — Ambient granular goodness
Arturia Keystep — MIDI controller for the Nymphes

Performed and recorded live, with EQ, compression, and limiting on the master."

Making Ambient Music With A Busted Minimoog (& Sequential Prophet X, Chase Bliss CXM 1978, Sax, etc)

video upload by MKDVB

"Moog Minimoog Model D - bass riff
Sequential Prophet X - piano, lead melody, chords, pads, strings
Saxophone
FX: Chase Bliss Audio / Meris CXM 1978, Chase Bliss Wombstone mk2, Mutable Instruments Beads,
Hologram Microcosm, Cooper FX Generation Loss v2, Moog Moogerfooger MF-103, Eventide Rose

Please turn on CC/subtitles for more detailed studio/production notes.

MKDVB - This Is Love

I recently bought an OG Moog MiniMoog Model D that's in dire need of servicing and repair. The synth tech says it needs all the op amps replaced, rebuilt power supply, etc but otherwise in pretty good shape. The oscillator pitch is unstable, especially on OSC 3, so it's always randomly gliding and glitching when I play it. It's going into the shop soon but I decided to make a track with it now anyway.

The Moog is on bass/rhythm track duties because it was too unreliable to play more lead sounds. You'll hear the pitch gliding randomly as the track goes on. Because the Moog was so glitchy, I picked a granular-type piano patch on the Prophet X as well as strings on it during the bridges. I'm also sending my sax through Mutable Instruments Beads to add some improvised duet action.

Thanks for tuning in! --davy"

Ambient jam with Moog Matriarch, Novation AFX Station, Hologram Microcosm, and Eventide Space

video upload by

"A live, semi-improvised track performed entirely on hardware.

I wrote this piece while tinkering on piano, and then arranged it for synth. The Matriarch excels at monophonic parts that sound huge and rich despite only playing one note at a time. Here I've got its four oscillators each tuned to a different octave, and its stereo delay offset in that horse-galloping sort of way. Once you add some reverb on top, it's sublime.

For melody, I wanted something small but also "messy". The Novation AFX Station was the perfect choice, as it fulfills these criteria and also has its own sound to the oscillators and filter that differ from the Moog sound. For the AFX Station, I use both the onboard filter drive and distortion to add a lot of harmonic richness, and some pitch modulation to get weirder toward the end. Once I placed the Hologram Microcosm at the end, doing its weird not-quite-reverb-not-quite-delay granular thing, the lead line came alive.

Moog Matriarch into Eventide Space — Main sequence
Novation AFX Station into Hologram Microcosm — Melody

Performed and recorded live with EQ, compression, and limiting on the master.

Music Thing Modular Mini Drive | Ambient Modular Synthesizer | Sworn64

video upload by Sworn64

"Having a little jam with the Music Thing Modular Mini Drive module from Thonk designed by Tom Whitwell.

The Mini Drive is a 4hp incandescent lamp based Overdrive/Distortion module inspired by the classic Moog Minimoog input gain. If you’re looking to get into DIY, this is very quick and easy kit to build.

Main voice is a Mutable Instruments Plaits through a Mutable Instruments Ripples, through the Mini Drive. Sequenced by the Make Noise Rene 2, clocked by the Korg SQ-1. Mutable Instruments Clouds provides the granular delay effects while the Happy Nerding FX Aid XL provides the Reverb. WMD AXYS crossfader controls the reverb send amount which is modulated by a Steady State Fate RND STP random sample and hold voltage to give the voice random splashes of reverb. The droning voice is the Acid Rain Technology Chainsaw through the System 80 Jove and 860 filters slowly modulated by an LFO. This voice is also sent through the TipTop Audio Z-Verb."

Unfiltered Audio SILO + Arturia Microfreak. Ambient Combo. No Talking

video by Anton Anru

"In this video I'm giving a try to the new plugin by Unfiltered Audio/Plugin Alliance: SILO. I'm passing Arturia Microfreak through this beautiful effect. That really interesting how a sequence or arpeggio transform into an entirely different thing. I've mapped some parameters to Ableton Push 2 to make changes in real time. I'd call SILO a true ambient machine thanks to its granular engine and reverb. It sounds fantastic, audio quality is great, and the features will satisfy many sound designers. Great work, SILO!
