Description:
Late 2025 Walker Farrell from MakeNoise started an international music challenge for musicians to participate in, submit your own Graphic Score, then at the draw of a hat, you would be assigned someone else's score to interpret and create music from. I am always interested in music challenges and the more off-beat the better.

Late December 2025 names were drawn at random, Walker constructed a collection of MakeNoise modular synthesis cards to generate random numbers to set who gets what score. I was allocated a topographical map from Bruce Magill that contained some text notes and penciled in graphics. Bruce had a musical concept in mind for this score but did say "Notes for this graphic score are only a suggestion. You can disregard them and interpret this score in any way you like, if you wish. ... Don't overthink." So I did have free reign to interpret the score as I wished, so I could let my imagination run wild. In my younger years I did a lot of wilderness hiking so was and still am, quite familiar with topographic maps, so for me this was the perfect score, something I could relate to and understood. As a side note, there is no right answer for interpreting a graphic score, so understanding is not an essential ingredient, however a vivid imagination is. It is a bit like laying on the grass and looking up at the clouds -- what do you see beyond back scattered light from suspended vapours in the sky.

PULSAR can be used for the synthesis of percussion instruments and rhythms, bass and melodic lines, effects and sound landscapes, as well as a source of control voltage and powerful analog FX processor.The PULSAR functions in three different modes: stand-alone, MIDI control and CV control. Moreover, all the above features and control modes can work simultaneously in any proportion or combination.Additionally, PULSAR offers live circuit bending capabilities and the use of the artist’s body conductivity to create patches and cross modulations. The SOMA LYRA-8 has earned a reputation as one of the most unconventional analog synthesizers ever built. It does not follow the rules of standard pitch, MIDI sequencing, or predictable modulation. Instead, it generates sound through an organic interaction of oscillators, distortion stages, and feedback paths. Every note is less a fixed frequency and more a living event shaped by your touch, voltage instabilities, and the nonlinear behavior of its circuitry."

"Ambient electronica built from simulated string tones and sustained synth textures.

Created with ‪@somasynths‬ LYRA-8, ‪@Dirtywave‬ M8 MODEL 02, ‪@teenageengineering‬ OP-1 field, and monotron DELAY.

On the LYRA-8, sustained tones are performed. The signal is processed with ‪@KORG_INC‬ monotron DELAY for filtering and delay, then through MICROCOSM with deep reverb.

On the M8 MODEL 02, simple harmonies are played and looped using Hypersynth. The sound is processed through ‪@ChaseBlissAudio‬ LOSSY with filtering and reverb.

On the OP-1 field, simulated string tones from the STRING synth are looped using the ENDLESS sequencer. Reverb is added with MOOD MKII, and the MICRO LOOPER is occasionally engaged to introduce variation."

Eric himself is a master Lyra player, and I wanted to try out a little drone piece pairing these two together. Coco because Coco. Little break in the middle to retune the Lyra (natch)"

"This piece was created using the ‪@somasynths‬ LYRA-8, ‪@YamahaSynthsOfficial‬ TENORI-ON, and tape loops. Simple phrases repeat over sustained tones, gradually shifting in rhythm and resonance to form a minimalist composition.

On the LYRA-8, sustained tones are generated by turning the HOLD knob. During the performance, the pitch of the four voices on the right side is gradually changed. The output is routed through ‪@HologramElectronics‬ MICROCOSM, where deep reverb is applied.

The TENORI-ON repeatedly plays simple tones and phrases, with the rhythmic structure changing over time. The output is sent through ‪@ChaseBlissAudio‬ MOOD MKII, adding reverb and generating micro-loops.

A piano performance is recorded onto a tape loop and played back through the NTS-3 looper and delay."

I've been playing with the LYRA-8 again after some time. Well known for it's intense sound design and noise capabilites, one of my favourite ways to use it is by taking the time to delicately tune each oscillator by ear, and then see how certain phrases and melodies emerge out from the ether.
