introducing midiphy zetaSID: expandable modular SID synth voice

video upload by midiphy

"midiphy proudly presents: zetaSID expandable modular SID synth voice

The legendary SID chip reimagined as an expandable modular synth voice: powerful synthesis engine, animated OLED display, and polyphony-expandable.

zetaSID is a powerful eurorack modular synthesizer voice packed into just 4 HP, expandable via the new midiphy phybus backplane link. Start with a single monophonic voice controlled via CV/gate and scale it to a full polyphonic MIDI synthesizer with up to six stereo voices with MIDI control. At its core lies the legendary MIDIbox SID synthesis engine, featuring six LFOs, dual envelopes, quad wave sequencers, eight modulation paths with dozens of sources, algorithmic operations, and an extensive trigger matrix.

It ships with 100 carefully crafted patches in its ROM bank, ready to use as-is or as inspiration for your own creations.

zetaSID is an expandable powerful SID voice covering a wide range of tones and textures, from classic chiptune staples to sounds you might not expect from a SID chip.

midiphy 4 x zetaSID Song

video upload by Avrilcadabra

"Hi everyone, These are midiphy eurorack modules.

Disclaimer I have marked this video as Paid Promotion although I was not paid to make this or any video, I was sent these to test before release.

The zetaSID modules are based on the legendary Midibox Sid Synthesizer.
They contain the lead and drum engines from the Midibox Sid and use Hermits (creator of Sid Wizard tracker) Sid emulation.

Each zetaSID contains 3 voices and filter as you would expect from an Sid chip ( The Sid chip is the sound chip from the legendary Commodore 64 home computer from the 80's )

So each zetaSID is a like one commodore 64. If you have multiple zetaSID's they can be linked together with supplied ribbon cables internally to add them to the Phybus, midiphy's way of having all modules being able to talk to each other. They then can work in unison, as stereo pairs, monophonically or for polyphony so a lot of different ways to use them. Of course I wanted to test how I could use them multitimbrally, and in this example I have them unlinked (not physically you can do it from the menus)

The midi module is Nexus Midi by midiphy and allows you to control the zetaSID's via regular midi over the Phybus (they do support cv gate also)

zetaSID 1 is using the drum engine, here I have split, kick, snare and hats over different voices on a single zetaSID, so indeed you can play a kick, hat and snare at the time time if patched this way.

zetaSID 2 is the lead sound, it is going through some hall reverb in this example. It shows off legato bends and using the impressive wave sequencer to increase vibrato over time (like tables if you are familiar with trackers)

zetaSID 3 Uses the Arp to provide classic c64 Arp sounds, I am just sending chords to this module over midi and it is handling the arps itself. It actually has 3 arpeggiators, one per voice, so a stereo pair of zetasids can run SIX arps with completely different settings at the same time from a single patch, impressive.

zetaSID 4 Is using one of the factory presets Den of Saws, I've just high passed it a bit since we are using a lot harmonically rich voices in this song.

This was midi sequenced via a Dirtywave M8 Tracker.

I will show more of the zetaSID's, as they are very powerful and very deep, the amount of modulation they have is outstanding even has Logic Gates, you can literally XOR lfo's together and I need to say if you are seeing this video and thinking you want like to write songs on these that program change isn't currently implemented, but is a high priority on the roadmap.

If you like my music I have a bandcamp here https://avrilcadabra.bandcamp.com/
And you can find me on streaming services and socials also."

MIDIbox SEQ V4+ Midi sequencer w/OLED displays and 909 style buttons

Note: links to listings are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.

via this auction

"This MIDIbox SEQ v4+ is an amazing, 16-track step and morph midi sequencer with arpeggiator that can connect to gear via standard 5pin midi-din cables or a USB cable. It is powered by USB, I will include the cable. Also will include the pre-formatted SD card that stores all the projects and sessions.

The SEQ v4+ is only available as a kit (this one is from midiphy.com), but this one is fully assembled (by me) and works 100%. The buttons are special ordered '909 style' buttons. The displays are extremely high quality OLED displays.

This is similar to a cirklon in that it can serve as the center of your studio and has lots of midi ports. The advantage of multiple midi ports is lower latency. It has 4 assignable midi outs, and 4 sets of assignable midi in/outs. Also multiple USB assignable midi ports. As well as 'internal midi' that can be assigned to other tracks. It's very flexible and incredibly powerful.

(Note: In4/Out4 is wired to accept a future piece of kit that will be created by midiphy.com so regular midi in/out may or may not work for your situation. There are still tons of inputs/outputs to choose from.)

The display in the top left shows visuals based on what mode its currently in. There are multiple shift/button combos but also dedicated buttons for common actions. The OLED screens are readable at extreme angles and has a screensaver that is automatically activated to prolong their life.

The only way to acquire one of these sequencers is to purchase the pcb and case kit, purchase all the components, and then carefully solder, test and install the software. This unit has already been built, it's ready to use and has an all-metal, powder-coated case with screenprinted graphics."

Hawkeye - Looped Happiness (midiphy LoopA launch demo)

Published on Nov 23, 2019 Hawkeye

"With the launch of the midiphy LoopA just around the corner and just in time for the upcoming holiday season, here is another quick demo video - it is not focussed on musical finesse :), but on some of the new features integrated in the launch software version of the LoopA.

In the beginning of the track, the LoopA is launched with "Beatloop" mode active, a new non-linear time progression model, which has different modes. Some modes scan the sequence while retaining an identical sequence playback time. It is great to create new melodic progressions while retaining harmonies and is also interesting for scrambling up recorded drumloops.

Later on, we explore some 'live transposition' features, where multiple selectable tracks (e.g. to exclude drum tracks) are transposed via a single live encoder action. Live transposition is measure-synchronized to occur "always just in time".

Also, scene progression is fully synchronized to the recorded loops, so you can confidently proceed to a new scene at any time in your performance.

The midiphy LoopA is inteded to be used as a "musical note pad" or an "idea generator", it has been designed to be easy to use and has different features than its bigger 16-track brother, the midiphy SEQ v4+. Depending on your musical style, it should normally be easily able to hold a whole song in a session, which contains up to 36 looped note clips (these are arranged in 6 tracks x 6 scenes). Sessions are fully storable and recallable on/from a removable SD card within seconds.

We have released the user manual, you can preview it over here:
https://www.midiphy.com/files/468/mid...

You can obtain a fully documented DIY kit of the midiphy LoopA here (or subscribe to it becoming available, it should be available soon):

Hope you enjoyed the demo - and thanks for watching and listening!
Best regards and many greets,

Hawkeye - Chiphead (Stereo SID Acid)

Published on Apr 13, 2019 Hawkeye

"It has been a while - we have moved and i had to do a quick new studio test - using some original MB6582 'acid' basslines created by TK./Thorsten Klose. Many, many thanks! :)

This was done in only about two hours and is not really a full track (thus the new midiphy SEQ v4+ was mostly unused). It is more of a SID stereo bassline audio demo, highly repetitive. I've also added both video takes, i am not sure which one is better or if both are bad, please tell me what you think :).

In this video, most sounds are created by DIY devices:
* MIDIbox MB6582 for a pair of 8580 SIDs in stereo bassline mode
* Mutable Instruments Anushri for the lead
* midiphy LoopA prototype for sequencing
* DIY polivoks stereo VCF to filter the drums

Recorded directly onto a Tascam audiograbber, no DAW was used, only slight audio compression added in post production.

Non-DIY equipment used:
* Vermona DRM 1 for drums
* MFB Dominion I as a secondary bassline synth

Many greets and thanks for listening and watching!

Building a MIDIbox SEQ v4+

Published on Jul 27, 2018 Hawkeye

"Welcome to the first part of the video build tutorial of the new MIDIbox SEQ v4+!
[ UPDATES/ERRATA - IMPORTANT! ]
1:35:18 - use 20 MHz crystals for the PIC 16F88s! Value/part in the BOM has been corrected.
1:37:00 - the 100N caps are for C3, C6, C9, C12 (not C1-C4). The BOM was correct. Thanks, Keir!

This is a detailed step-by-step build video tutorial with additional notes, tips and tricks. While the SEQv4+ build is targeted towards intermediate DIYers, it is our firm belief, that everyone being able to hold a soldering iron with a fine soldering tip should have a fair chance of building it, therefore the detailed documentation.

Please refer to the above UPDATES/ERRATA and the below NOTES sections before starting building, in case some some errors did sneak into the video - thanks! :)

Upcoming DIY midiphy LoopA MIDI Sequencer - Hawkeye - Microwaved (Waldorf Microwave 1, SID 8580 and friends)

Published on Apr 28, 2018 Hawkeye

"Hi, it has been a while...

This song sat on the sequencer for far too long - there were too many different melody lines going on and it was really difficult to bring it together - while i am not 100% convinced, it is the best possible effort with the midi clips i came up with, i hope you still like it - it had to be finished at some point, otherwise it would have occupied the sequencer for another few months :)

It was live sequenced on the midiphy LoopA - this small 'inspirational MIDI sequencer' will be available as an affordable DIY kit soon.

Other hardware used:
Dreamy string: Waldorf Microwave 1
Simple Lead: SID 8580 in MBSID/MB6582 synthesizer
Arpeggiated synth: Alesis Andromeda
Bass: MFB Dominion I
Second Lead: Roland V-Synth
Drums: Elektron Machinedrum
Audiograbber: Tascam DR-100
FX: Strymon Timeline and BigSky

Recorded directly from the hardware, only audio-compressed in post-production, but no DAW was abused during recording :).

Many greets to all DIY folks out there, you know who you are, thanks for your support and time!

I might be uploading a few DIY videos (e.g. how to build the LoopA sequencer used in this song) in the next time, if you are here only for songs, please don't go away, there will be more, later on :).

Thanks for watching and listening,
Hawkeye / Maelstroem Records"
