This machine came to me in pretty bad shape. Dirty on the outside, with some faulty buttons, and in serious need of some love. But honestly? It's not that hard to bring one of these back to life if you're careful and you enjoy working with vintage gear. And if you don't — stick around anyway, because it's super interesting to see these machines from the inside.
I'm walking you through the full process: deep cleaning, how to remove and clean the button contacts the right way (spoiler: cleaning the surface does nothing — you need to go under them), installing the Electrongate MIDI board and RAM upgrade so you don't need a battery anymore, and swapping the plastic panels for the beautiful wooden ones from Electrongate.

It has been improved by famous Moog tech Rudi Linhard, i.e. memory upgrade (1024 presets), slew rate mod, aftertouch mod, and panel backlight modification - the original Anniversary Edition machines had a problem with an audible whine from the (otherwise beautiful and extremely useful) panel backlight. Rudi has re-calibrated this so that it is only noticeable when the backlight is turned to maximum.
This lovely synth is available for collection from Nuremberg, or VEMIA can organise collection / packing / delivery at cost."

"Most of the instruments on this track were run through a Fairfield Circuitry 20% More Slew Limiting Distortion pedal, which facilitates an enormous range of distortion options, from the familiar to the very unfamiliar."
"The Roland MKS-80 isn't known as a typical analog pad machine like the JX-8P or the MKS-70, but still its VCOs are capable of creating some wonderful pads. I couldn't find many pad demos of the MKS-80 online, because most demos contain the powerful analog sounds that the Jupiter-series is so famous for. So I decided to record a few soft pads chords on the MKS-80 for the synth community. As its output is mono, I've added a bit of chorus and reverb from the SQ-5 to spice up the pads.
Played using the Moog Voyager as an expensive MIDI controller using its mod wheel to control the filter, but the fact that you hear polyphonic sounds and see a blinking green MIDI on the blurry MKS-80 in background is the ultimate evidence that you actually hear the MKS-80. ;-)
