Erik Norlander's Farfisa Compact Duo CD/30 Dual Keyboard Organ

Note: links to listings are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.
video upload by moogfoundation

via this Reverb listing

"A rare vintage combo organ with that unmistakable Farfisa sound. Removable, fold-out bottom reveals fold-down legs (one or two screws missing but still functional) and hard-wired power cable. Cable connects to the external Farfisa F/AR unit which provides power and contains the spring reverb. This unit is functionally good but it could use some internal contact cleaning in a few areas. We coaxed some very usable tones out of it in the demo video! The case itself has been "well-loved," showing moderate surface scuffs from travel.

This is the Compact Duo CD/30, one of Farfisa’s higher-end models from the late ’60s; basically a two-manual version of the Compact with expanded voicing and richer tone-shaping options. A favorite among garage rockers, psych bands, and analog synth fans alike.

Features:

Two manuals (upper and lower keyboards) for split/layered playing
Vibrato, tone boost, and percussion controls
Bass and organ voices with classic Farfisa tabs
Mark I version
The Compact Duo was used extensively by Pink Floyd (Echoes, etc.); a favorite for its gritty tone and punchy presence on stage and in the studio.

The Florian Schneider Collection to Be Auctioned at JULIEN*S November 19

Note: links to listings are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.

via JULIEN*S

"THE FLORIAN SCHNEIDER COLLECTION

Auction to be held at Musician's Hall of Fame & Museum, Nashville, on November 19

An incredible collection of more than 450 artifacts from the life and career of Florian Schneider, co-founder of the pioneer electronic band Kraftwerk."

Pics and videos featuring some of the gear below, and his Lederhosen for good measure (thanks greg!).

Update: the post has been fully updated with all the synth related gear. This may just well be the longest post to be featured on the site. I wanted to capture all the pics for all of the details including notes, scuffs, and of course serial numbers. It's an interesting look into what he used, the condition he keped his gear, in some cases, how he actually used his gear. Note the phonetics on the keys of the Casio CZ-101 and DX-100. Note the Midi Switch Box with a built-in speaker? What's that about? Note the camouflage key strap on the Korg RK-100 Remote Keyboard. Did he pick it out himself or did the keytar just come with it? Note the repeat midi controllers and the MIDI saxaphones. Wind was his primary instrument. You'll find a ton of the acoustic gear he used in the other listings. This is a fascinating insight into both what and how he used his gear.

Side note: there is no affiliate compensation for this post. The note at the top automatically shows for all posts with the Auction label.

Rack Mount Sennheiser VSM-201 Vocoder

Starting Bid $5,000

Estimate $20,000 - $40,000 USD

A late 1970s Sennheiser VSM 201 Vocoder with no serial number from the personal studio and collection of Florian Schneider of Kraftwerk (see images). While it’s said that only a few dozen of these Vocoders were produced, a few examples made it into the hands of forward-thinking musical artists including Herbie Hancock, Daft Punk, and of course, Kraftwerk, who used a VSM-201 like this on their albums Man Machine (1978) and Computerworld (1981). The VSM-201 has an intelligible sound that has not yet been bested by modern gear. Includes power cable. This VSM-201 has been removed from its wooden enclosure (which bears the serial number plate) and modified with a metal rack mount casing, presumably for live use. Requires 240v, IEC power cable not included.

Dimensions: 19 x 9 x 9 inches

Category: Kraftwerk, Equipment

Provenance: PROVENANCE From the Estate of Florian Schneider

Oberheim Matrix 12 Analog 12-Voice Synthesizer, with deluxe custom ATA flight case

Note: links to listings are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.
video upload by moogfoundation

via this Reverb listing

See if you can spot the Matrix-6 screen. I think that was accident. Capturing it for posterity. :)

"A towering icon of analog synthesis! Nicely restored, beautifully preserved, and built to tour or record for another lifetime.

This Oberheim Matrix-12 is in very good condition, has been restored by Rosensound, with some recent restorations performed by synth legend and former Oberheim engineer Marcus Ryle. It comes in a new, custom-built, heavy-duty flight case. It’s a US version, upgraded with a new control panel overlay from Sweet Discrete (UK) for a clean, sharp aesthetic. Everything functions beautifully; a truly top-shelf example of one of the most powerful analog polysynths ever built.

Cosmetic notes: the Sweet Discrete panel overlay LED registration is a bit off in a few places, so some LEDs look slightly off center (as shown in an included close-up image). Performance is not affected. The new overlay generally looks beautiful, but not strictly 10/10. There is also some stubborn tape residue on a few of the keys which can also be seen in the photos.

Details:

12 voices, each with 2 analog oscillators, multimode filter, and extensive routing
Legendary 96-point modulation matrix; no menus, just raw power
Velocity and pressure sensitivity, 5-stage envelopes, and complex LFOs
Massive analog presence with surgical control
US voltage model (no step-down needed)
New road-ready flight case included, $600+ value
Restored by Rosensound and Marcus Ryle, two of the most trusted names in analog synth servicing
New Sweet Discrete panel overlay from the UK; clean, legible, and sharp
Used by Hans Zimmer, Keith Emerson, Depeche Mode, Pet Shop Boys, and countless electronic pioneers, the Matrix-12 is the pinnacle of analog polyphonic design; often called “the last great analog monster.”

30% of this sale supports the Bob Moog Foundation, preserving the history of synthesis and inspiring future creators."

Make Noise Introduces PoliMATHS and QXG

video upload by MAKEN0ISE

Check with dealers on the right for availability. User video by Cinematic Laboratory further below.

PoliMATHS [MSRP: $459] is an eight-channel CV and Audio event generator for the New Universal Synthesizer System or any Eurorack modular synthesizer. It uses a single set of controls to generate complex functions at eight independent channel outputs. PoliMATHS’ functions are made up of two components: first, the well-known Rise-Fall envelope with variable Curve (familiar from the original MATHS and Function and 0-Coast Slope); and second, a variable-Shape Oscillation whose amplitude is controlled over time by the Rise-Fall envelopes. This oscillation can be either low frequency for the creation of complex control functions, or audio frequency for native generation of audio events/notes with optional tuned pitch control via 1v/oct control voltage. PoliMATHS also includes output headers for creating pre-patched connections to the control inputs of QXG.

PoliMATHS
Part of the New Universal Synthesizer System
Eight channel function generator with a single set of controls
Create simple or complex functions
Activate channels in many possible patterns using Channel Index, Round, and Parallel Modes
Modulate parameters across channels with Spread or Modulation Dissemination
Designed to work with MultiMod and QXG and future NUSS modules
Chain to QXG for immediate eight channel amplitude control

The Quad Stereo Gate (QXG) [MSRP: $239] music synthesizer module is a Four Channel Stereo Low Pass Gate and Mixer. Like the DXG before it, the QXG utilizes a new low pass gate circuit that does not use vactrols. This circuit is 100% analog and its response was arrived at after many months tailoring it to meet or exceed the expectations that have been set by all the vactrol low pass gates that Make Noise has created over the years. Additionally the QXG adds a Vactrol button to select between a Slow, low-pass-gate-like response emulating the decay time of a vactrol (Vactrol button ON), and a Fast precision response that still maintains the gentle filtering characteristic (Vactrol button OFF). Fast response can be especially useful when patching QXG with complex and quickly-changing functions such as those generated by PoliMATHS with the OSC circuit in use. The QXG also includes a Stereo Sum Output with voltage controllable Stereo Spread to quickly route all four channels across the stereo field. Each channel also has an individual output that removes the channel from the Sum when patched. In addition, QXG includes signal and control input headers for creating pre-patched connections from the outputs of PoliMATHS and MultiMod.

Part of the New Universal Synthesizer System
Four channel low pass gate
Vactrol-free design for classic Low Pass Gate sounds
Vactrol button to select Fast or Slow response
Xpread parameter for spreading the four channels across the stereo field
Summing stage with Stereo AUXiliary IN allows for chaining of multiple units, creating larger mixes
Individual channels can be removed from Sum by patching to their respective outputs
Designed to work with MultiMod and PoliMaths
Chain two QXG units to a PoliMaths for immediate eight channel amplitude control

PoliMaths & QXG | How does it sound when you know nothing?

video upload by Cinematic Laboratory

"Today MakeNoise has introduced PoliMaths and QXG. My dealer already had them in stock (!) and allowed me to buy them - under the strict condition to keep it a secret until after the official launch video. So I had the opportunity to make a video in one day, without access to any help from the manual or the MakeNoise launch video. Normally I'd do my homework first, but this opportunity is rare. Usually, I can intuitively figure out how a module works, but with PoliMaths, almost nothing is familiar, and what's familiar works differently. So I've probably been using a MonoMaths, but since I decided to get two, there's still a Poli vibe to it.

This is probably one of the worst videos I've made so far, but it's fun to patch in the blind with zero knowledge, and this was the only day I could record, edit and post it. So forgive me for being a MakeNoise groupie. I am biased, but I also think it's for a good reason. MakeNoise managed to make something extremely innovative. I'll make a proper video soon, and I'll figure out what to do with this one later."

Roland MC-202 // Analog Vintage Synthesizer // BEAUTY!

Note: links to listings are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.

via this Reverb listing

"This is the iconic Roland MC-202 from the golden era of analog synths... and this one is in beautiful condition!

The MC-202 was part of the Detroit, Belgium and Dutch house scene in the late 80s, early 90s. It's therefore becoming a rare unit nowadays, most units you find on the market were HEAVY used during those decades. Plus way less units were produced comparing to it's two fraternal twin the SH-101.

The MC-202 is basically a SH-101 with tons of additional sequencing features, CV in/out options, double sync etc... and a display! Its a gorgeous unit and it's sounds are all instant house music.

Important things to consider buying this beautiful unit from us:

No discolouration or faded teint of the outer shell like most units have!
Clean Battery compartment, most units had battery leaks in the past creating future problems on the boards, like also the case in many 606 and 303 units.
Display like new, most units have faded/watery displays.
No destructive devaluating mods have been done, no drilling in the case, etc."

Coloray performs 'Tonight' with the 3rd Wave 8M and 24M synths

video upload by Groove Synthesis

"Berlin-based electronic artist Coloray takes the new 3rd Wave 8M desktop synthesizer for a spin alongside the flagship 24M in this live performance of his original song 'Tonight.' Learn more about the 3rd Wave 8M: https://www.groovesynthesis.com

Watch as Coloray sculpts sounds in real-time using both synths controlled by Ableton Live, creating layers of wavetable textures and analog warmth without any overdubs.

The 3rd Wave 8M brings the complete synthesis engine to a compact desktop format with 8 voices, bi-timbral operation, and the same premium analog filters that define Groove’s 3rd Wave character. At $1,999, the 8M makes the distinctive 3rd Wave sound accessible to a broader range of musicians while maintaining patch compatibility with the 24-voice models.

In this performance, Coloray sequences multiple synth parts on the 24M (taking advantage of its 4-part multitimbral capabilities) while the 8M handles the driving bassline. Throughout the song, he uses the performance controls to shape filter sweeps and envelope responses, demonstrating the intuitive real-time control that makes the 3rd Wave series so expressive. The vocals feature live vocoder processing, with drums and vocal samples provided by Ableton playback tracks.

Coloray (Raynor De Groot) is the boundary-pushing electronic artist known for his genre-defying approach that draws from ambient, EBM, techno, house, and disco. His tracks have topped Beatport charts and earned support from Four Tet, Dixon, Solomun, and Pete Tong. His innovative 'Future Static' audiovisual concept and virtual reality experiences showcase his commitment to pushing creative boundaries."

Roger Linn: The King of Drum Machines

video upload by Jack Pearson

"This is the story of Roger Linn, a guitarist from Los Angeles whose innovative sample based drum machines changed the sound of music forever.

Special thanks to Roger himself for featuring my video in the September Linnstrument newsletter (https://myemail.constantcontact.com/L...) and on his website (https://www.rogerlinndesign.com).

I first learned about Roger a few years ago while making a film called “The History of Sampling in Music” [below]. While I didn’t know anything about Roger at the time, I was astounded to learn that he had created both the LinnDrum and the MPC, which shaped the punchy robotic drums of 80s pop music and the grungy experimental grooves of 90s hip-hop respectively. I did a quick bit of research about him for my video, but didn’t really dig much deeper than that… However, a few months ago I decided to rewatch my old project, which reignited my interest in Roger’s story and gave me the idea for this video.

Like my previous project, I’d initially planned to write a script and do a voice-over, but after discovering the assortment of recorded interviews that Roger has already appeared in, I realised that I could just chop them up and have Roger tell his own story. I thought 'hey that sounds pretty cool, how hard could it be?'

Well, let’s just say I’m probably never going to do something like this again. I did enjoy making this and I am proud of it, but if I had just done a voice-over not only would it have been easier to make, but I also could’ve included a lot information without it feeling incredibly clunky. The initial cut was about 26 minutes, but I cut out loads of stuff for the sake of pacing and trying to stick to narrative beats. Roger is a fascinating guy with a lot of great anecdotes though, so if you enjoyed this video then I highly recommend you seek out some of the podcasts/interviews he’s done over the years.

I planned on making all the music for this film myself, but decided it would be better to use music that relates to Roger in some way (for example, he co-wrote 'Promises' by Eric Clapton and 'Quittin’ Time' by Mary Chapin Carpenter, and first used the LM-1 Drum Computer on the Leon Russell album 'Life & Love' which featured the track 'One More Love Song'.) I salvaged one of these demo tracks for the credits, but you can listen it and a few more scrapped tracks here:

Since you’ve read this far, here’s a few bonus Roger facts that got cut out of the video:

The LM-1 was featured on the best selling album of all time - 'Thriller' by Micheal Jackson, as well as other early 80s hits like 'Maneater' by Hall & Oates, 'Valerie' by Steve Winwood, and for some reason - the original 1983 Thomas the Tank Engine theme song.

Roger hired his friend, a professional session drummer called Art Wood, to record most of the sounds on the LM-1. They set up the kit in Roger’s closet, recording each of the drums one at a time… then called it a day. Given the popularity of the songs featuring these recordings - Art Wood is technically one of most prominently featured drummers of all time.

And here's two bonus facts about this video:

The title 'The King of Drum Machines' is a quote from the father of MIDI - Dave Smith, when he spoke about Roger and the Tempest drum machine (which they built together) on a Sweetwater panel in 2015. [below]

This video was released on Roger’s 70th birthday.

I hope you enjoy it!" The History of Sampling in Music (2022)

The Inventors of Synth (Roger Linn, Dave Smith & Tom Oberheim) - Sweetwater Gearfest 2015

video upload by Sweetwater

"Join Mitch Gallagher as he moderates 'The Inventors of Synth' panel discussion at Gearfest '15. Featuring industry icons Dave Smith, Tom Oberheim, and Roger Linn discussing their thoughts on the past, present, and future of analog synthesizers and controllers.

Legendary synth designer and Grammy-winner Dave Smith was the founder of Sequential Circuits in the mid-'70s. His Prophet-5, the world's first fully programmable polyphonic synth, was the first musical instrument with an embedded microprocessor. Dave is also known as the driving force behind the development of the MIDI specification. He has continued to innovate, and recently unveiled his latest synth creation, the Sequential Prophet-6.

A pioneer of the synth and MIDI world, Tom Oberheim co-designed the Synthesizer Expansion Module (SEM), a device that allowed musicians to simultaneously combine live playing and sequenced playback - a concept that pre-dated the MIDI revolution. In 1981, he, along with Roland's Ikutaro Kakehashi and Sequential's Dave Smith, developed the MIDI spec, which changed the course of modern music. Tom recently re-released his famed Two Voice synth.

Technical Grammy award-winner Roger Linn invented the LM-1 Drum Computer (the first sample-based drum machine) in 1979. He later designed the Akai MPC60, which combined a sampling drum machine with a real-time MIDI sequencer. His guitar effects unit, AdrenaLinn, has been used on hit recordings by John Mayer and Red Hot Chili Peppers. In 2014 he released the LinnStrument, an expressive MIDI performance controller."

Tekno - Baby Audio - Official Tutorial

video upload by Baby Audio

PRODUCE DRUMS WITHOUT SAMPLES
Stop browsing for the perfect sample and create your own infectious electronic drum sounds instead – with total control.

Tekno offers 18 fully synthesized drum engines, spanning kicks, snares, clap, hats, percussion and more. Craft unique drum kits full of punch and analog flavor to suit any musical genre.

Use MIDI to sequence Tekno directly. Or simply drag and drop your sounds into any DAW or folder for external sequencing.

NEXT-GENERATION DRUM SYNTHESIS
To build Tekno we teamed up with Jatin Chowdhury, one of the leading engineers in analog circuit modeling. Our goal was to create a modern spiritual successor to the legendary drum machines of the 20th century. Not an emulation, but more.

Tekno stands on the shoulders of classic drum machines but hits deeper and harder. It utilizes a combination of circuit-modeling and cutting edge DSP to deliver the punchiest synthesized drums ever put in a plugin.

DEEP TWEAKING OR FAST INSPIRATION
Click the ‘Gear’ icons next to any synth voice or FX section to unlock deep calibration and circuit-bending options.

Or hit the onboard ‘Dice’ icons to let Tekno’s smart random-algorithm generate all-new drums with every click.

You can also start from the 73 global presets and 1314 individual voice presets by leading sound designers such as Richard Devine, Mr. Bill, Virtual Riot and Yoad Nevo.

Circuit Bent Feedback Generator / Video Synth / Video processor by LoFi Future

video upload by LoFiFuture

"A rough and ready demo of this one off feedback generator I built a while back using a fancy-schmancy Silicon Image iScan Pro!

Availible to order here: https://lofifuturestore.square.site/p...

This unit is capable of producing some insanely intricate and evolving feedback loops on its own and it can also be used as a video processor to colourise and glitch out composite video signals for some very 80s looking posterized visuals.

The interface is simple, the upper part housing the built in preview screen also has directional controls and an illuminated zoom button for controlling the position of the image on screen.

The main control surface features:
-3 oversized 45mm knobs for controlling the Red, Green and Blue levels
-5 small knobs that control brightness, contrast, saturation, hue and sharpness
-6 toggle switches for triggering circuit bends that are wired into the Silicon Image iScan board for some glitch effects!

The unit features a 12V power input a composite output (PAL and NTSC) and a switchable composite input (so you can switch from feedback loop mode to video processor mode without rewiring anything)"

"This feedback generator / video synth is based on a very nice Silicon Image iScan composite to VGA scaler that features analog potentiometers to control brightness, contrast, saturation, hue and sharpness. This is something I have not been able to find on another model of composite to VGA converter and they seem fairly hard to come by.
