A few years ago, I first met Jacob Brashears at NAMM, where he debuted an extraordinary new synthesizer called the Relic. Now, the Relic is finished and after spending time with it, I think it’s worth asking:

Is this the most impressive synthesizer made in the last 40 years?

In this video, Jacob takes me through the Relic’s front panel and shows how this remarkable instrument works. Then I get behind the keyboard and play sounds that I created in just a few hours. The Relic has an incredibly expressive character that seems to combine the best qualities of classic vintage Oberheim, Moog, and ARP synthesizers with some very sophisticated modern technology.

It has the immediacy and character of the great analog instruments of the past, while incorporating modern advancements, routing and expression…and even the ability to continue evolving through future firmware updates. One of the things that really surprised me is the Relic’s distortion. I demonstrate sounds with distortion that feels remarkably organic and nonlinear, much more like the behavior of a great guitar amplifier than conventional synthesizer distortion.

I’ll also play expressive keyboard sounds, leads, basses, and other patches I created while exploring the instrument, so you can hear what the Relic is capable of in the hands of a musician. Jacob has clearly put an enormous amount of thought into this synthesizer, and the result is an instrument that feels both deeply connected to synthesizer history and genuinely forward-looking.

These Plugins Sound AMAZING… Except One

Your old pal Keith demos vintage strings, custom wavetable import, Bloom and reverse reverb, and gloriously backward shoegaze. Grab your mod wheel for another episode of your favorite talky synthesizer content show!

First up: Authentic Soundware's Space Age Strings, with gorgeous legatos, vintage ribbon-mic character, and serious Mancini energy. We pair those nine violins with Liminal Space 2's new Space Age Scoring Stage preset and compare the library's built-in reverb with some algorithmic spaciousness.

Then we revisit Traveler! Version 1.1 fixes the big wavetable-workflow frustrations from my previous review: now I can point it at my existing KRC Mathwaves folders without duplicating gigabytes of content. Cue polygonal bells, Morlet wavelet vowels, and a much happier Keith. We also try MiniFreak V's new user-wavetable import. It's great to have it, but I've got opinions about the workflow, the effects, and whether the software version floats my boat.

Finally, we explore my Liminal Space 2 RC6 reverb for macOS and Windows: MIDIverb II-inspired Bloom sounds, reverse-style swells, ACTUAL reversed audio, and instant imaginary Cocteau Twins guitar with Native Instruments' Electric Sunburst Deluxe. We build Bloom effects on piano, shape them with curves and wavetables, and explore Reverse Capture's Diffuse and Clear modes. Then we get dark and wobbly with Clockwarp and the new Vulture 224 filter, inspired by Alex at Vulture Culture. Woot!

The new virtual module is a software adaptation of VAEMI’s physical R2R Ladder Eurorack module, preserving the original hardware’s bidirectional architecture and core musical concept. The plug-in is available free of charge through the official VCV Library.

Inspired by the fundamental architecture of an R-2R digital-to-analog converter, R2R Ladder uses eight weighted connections representing eight binary bits. A full-blown revamp of the SV-1, it features updates to nearly every aspect of the instrument: new oscillator core, classic PGH filters updated with new character modes and overdrive stages, new spring reverb, new response curves and range modes on the ADSR envelopes, a custom 37-key keyboard with pitch-bend and mod wheels, and a redesigned interface with eighty-four patch points along the top. This Memorymoog was previously serviced by Memorymoog specialist Jareth Lackey at Synthpro, and all of the work has been checked by us to make sure it is up to our standards as well. As a finishing touch, we installed our own Memory Liberator upgrade which allows perpetual storage of patch memory without a battery.

Internally- Apart from any repairs, it's been completely disassembled and cleaned, all potentiometers and switches have been cleaned, it has two new octave switches, all electrolytic & tantalum capacitors replaced (including the power supply), the keyboard rebuilt with new bushings, the j-wires & buss-bar have been hand polished, and it has been fully calibrated. *This may be updated!"

"What happens when you build a vacuum tube-based hybrid synthesizer in a Soviet space lab and send it back from the future? Today we’re demoing, reviewing, and explaining MARS from Eternal Engine Electronic Musical Instruments — one of the strangest, most beautiful, and most aggressive modern synthesizers I’ve ever played.

MARS is often described as a four-voice polyphonic tube synthesizer, but architecturally it’s more accurately a paraphonic synthesizer. The four digital oscillator voices can be played across multiple notes, but they all share the same tube-based filter and vactrol-based amplifier. That puts MARS more in the tradition of instruments like the Korg Mono/Poly and Formanta Polivoks than a conventional analog polysynth.

In this video, I walk through the full architecture of the Eternal Engine MARS: the digital oscillator section, mono / duo / poly voice modes, pulse-width modulation, ensemble mode, FM synthesis, modulation matrix, envelopes, LFO, sample & hold, the gorgeous Nixie lamp interface, the resonant vacuum tube filter, and the asymmetric tube overdrive that gives this synth its raw, snarling character.

This is not a safe, polite, modern analog synth. MARS is boutique, unusual, heavy, beautifully built, and absolutely vicious when pushed. The tube filter and drive section give it a sound that feels alive in a way most modern synthesizers don’t — somewhere between vintage analog synth, industrial bass machine, experimental sound design box, and Soviet sci-fi artifact.

If you’re into industrial music, EBM, darkwave, synthwave, experimental electronic music, vintage synthesizers, boutique synths, tube distortion, paraphonic synthesis, analog filters, FM basses, PWM pads, or Polivoks-style aggression, MARS is worth hearing.

I also talk through who I think this synth is actually for — and who should probably pass on it. Because while I absolutely adore the sound, MARS is not a cheap “do everything” synth, and it’s not trying to compete with mass-market analog polysynths. It’s a character instrument. A monster. A special machine for people who want something truly different."

"Up for sale is a beautiful Korg PE-1000 — a.k.a. Polyphonic Ensemble P — synthesizer from 1976. This one is in excellent condition and comes with the original lid and — a rarity! — the key for the lock. PLEASE NOTE: The stand shown here is not included. It's for display only.

Everything is working properly on this, and it sounds great. Note that the Glide feature — essentially note bend up or down — is activated by a foot switch plugged into the back of the synth. This is by design per the PE1000 owner’s manual on the Korg site. No pedal is provided, but any switching or damper pedal (which I’ve used) will work fine.

The Fragmenter 45 is a circuit bent Extron 1604 HDMI Scaler. It is a very high quality unit that demanded a very high retail price when originally released. The HDMI signal integrity is pixel perfect and doesn't compress your image when passed through this thing. It processes 1080p 60fps signals without even breaking a sweat!

This one features some effects that are new to myself, targeting a specific part of the clock circuitry that I have not experimented with before on any other device. The 3 push buttons trigger different clock glitch effects that completely take over the signal and make some mesmerizing patterns. They are an extreme and immediate set of effects, perfect for the most intense parts of a live visual performance. A bonus feature of these buttons is that when subtle artefacts build up on the screen after a while even when the effects are all off, a quick press of one of these buttons and they are all cleared! No need for a reset mid performance!

Another effect unique to this device in the horizontal warp effect that makes the clean HDMI signal degrade into something that looks like a weak analog transmission.

8 knobs control the colour digitise effect and another 9 knobs control the "fragment" effect section that splits the image up and repeats it in slices at a 45 degree angle. These two banks of knobs can be linked together with a toggle switch for even more effect possibilities.

This unit also features a VGA input and can scale the signal to a HDMI output, all of the effects work the same when doing so."

Bus those signals together and send/return to a Hologram Chroma Console. Route that signal into the crossfader to mix the effected M8 and S-1 sound with the DJ decks. Add an OXI E-16 and map individual knobs to the M8 and S-1 bus’s post-fader, EQ controls and bi-modal filter cutoff (input control mapping is slated for post-launch release). Record several minutes of knob-tweaking as a .wav file to Zero's internal storage. Re-import that .wav file, add cuepoints and a beatgrid, and loop and layer it in with other inputs and DJ playback.

Built to Evolve
Zero is a new hardware platform and a custom Linux distribution running front-end software from our own publicly-available open source SDK. It ships with the DJ playback, library, external sync, signal routing and recording features, and it includes on-device software management for easy install of future updates. Planned updates include control input mapping, video output for streamers, third-party library support (including rekordbox and Engine DJ) and accessibility features. It fits in a fanny pack, but Zero will develop new capabilities by the truckload.

"This classic Juno 106 is in great cosmetic condition. ALL voice / filter chips are working proper without any issues. All 6 chips have been restored and working / sounding great! We also detailed all buttons and switches. They work great, easy to engage without issue. A new battery was installed and we upgraded to a quick and easy battery holder for future replacement that will not need solder work. This Juno has also been fully calibrated. Also upgraded are the side panels as shown."
